Actually...the real magic is that no one would notice it. The brain would be processing the effect with the viewer not even realizing its impact. So yeah, that's the reason to "put in all this effort". ;)

    • @averyk7
      @averyk7 Před 4 lety +30

Sugar2000galaxy We got so far with the design of Andy as well! After watching Toy Story 1 after seeing some of the scenes from Andy’s childhood in Toy Story 4 during the beginning, you can see an amazing difference between how realistic he looks and how much better he looks as well.
In Toy Story 1, you can see how simplistic Andy looks in general without much hair, clothes, skin, eyes and lighting detail as well. Toy Story 4 has a lot more attention on the way he looks overall.
Of course, the difference is all because of the 3D animation processes and such they use. They’ve come a long way since 25 years ago, so you can’t blame Toy Story 1 for not having as much attention to detail as some of the newer animations. Though, Toy Story 1 was probably by far the best animated film of its time back then.
Anyways, kudos to the team and everyone who had their part in contributing to this film. I’m not so much for the story, but the visual design is amazing and wonderful.

CG is not sterile, but it's also not 2D. For better or worse CG has (and by that I mean: the trend is) to look more like a "live action movie" where fantastical things can happen while 2D can have more stylistic liberties.

@@felixrogers9569 Good point! Spiderverse definitely takes creative freedom in their all the animation, even adding 2D in some portions (wait a...). Spiderverse is an amazing CG film but sadly it's an exception, not the rule.
But to that you may answer that toystory 4 is _also_ an exception with how much detail they put in, when most 3d films compare to Source film maker animations, and not professionally shot films.
I guess I do have a personal bias in the subject, oh well.

    • @jadeberry2402

yeah, I'm super biased toward 2D animation, I always prefer it, so much so I refuse to watch new Disney princess movies. If I do watch them, you can bet I'm gonna insult the animation at least oncr., But I gotta admit, the toy story animation looks absolutely beautiful, you can see how much effort they put into it and hating on that just feels mean.

I've had a theory that part of the reason people reject 3D animation as if they're cartoons is partially because we've grown with 2D cartoons all our lives. For example: If someone wants to make 3D characters for a Japanese Anime look like their 2D hand drawn version, everything from lighting, line weight, and even timing/smoothness needs to be adjusted. So even though you can 3D animate a character with sweeping sleek 60/120 fps, it'll "look" wrong because it's almost "too perfect." So reverting to 24 fps and classic 2D animation techniques becomes important to create the illusion. Did you know many of Naruto's animations are done with 3D characters? They've just gotten so darn good at hiding/convincing you it's still 2D.

To the OP, actually, very few movies stick to only one lens. A recent example would be Call Me By Your Name, which used a 35MM lens for its entirety.

Furthermore, I enjoyed the elegant details in your editing, if it's either masking the right side of the split diopter shot, to playoff "Forky's" dialogue as part of a joke or the simple cut to the cat with beautifully shaped specular highlights flowing down its body as you bring up the cinematographers use of light. I enjoyed the experience, such a well-crafted video.

I think they simply wanted the left character stand out through shallow depth of field. This would, however, make the right character be blurry. 5:05 “Gabby Gabby is trying to manipulate Forky into giving her information, the split diopter broadcasts that there’s something bogus about her sweetness.”
Sure Gabby Gabby was mostly interrogating Forky throughout his kidnapping with her, but I don’t necessarily think her sweetness was at all artificial. She’s a gray character, a character between the range of black and white, good and evil. She’s a dimensional character with desires and a backstory. She was simply a nice character, but had desires that pinned her as the story’s antagonist. So if anything, I think the split diopter was simply to decrease the amount of cuts in the scene, and to show a sense of dominance between the two chracters. Gabby being the kidnapper, and Forky being the powerless hostage. He even trips on his own feet which sort of illustrates that he can’t escape on his own.

I find it kind of funny how often, in real cinematography and photography the goal is to eliminate imperfections, designing lenses with less distortion effects, eliminating "breathing" when focus pulling, smoothing camera movement with lots of different tools, using cranes and drones to get shots that are otherwise impossible, and so on and the forth; but in CGI, either animated or still, the goal is often to recreate the imperfections that exist in real life to make the shot appear more real.
In blender (or any other 3D software), you could create the perfect photograph with absolutely no chromatic abberation, no barrel distortion, the focal distance (as well as its fade-in and fade-out) precisely matched to the shot, with perfect lighting where everything is consistent, no dust anywhere, and so on, you get the idea. Depending on the situation, say, you'se creating images for some catalog, this would be seen as the perfect ideal if you are creating these photos in real life, and you may try to get as close to it as possible, but to really make it look good in your software, you have to add in these imperfections, not to a large degree, only the tininest bit, to really make it look good. The difference between looking almost impossibly good and actually literally impossibly good is enough to change the subconscious response from "very well done" to "obviously fake".

      Not even close.
The had a real person shoot the movie the same way you'd shoot any other movie. All the movements the person makes irl with the camera rig gets translated into the virtual camera's motion. To put it simply, imagine you recorded a video of your view from a VR game. Instead of moving your head around though, they're just using a camera rig with trackers.

Wow. I always told my students, mimic real world camera movements . Just don't use impossible camera moves too much, just because you have freedom to do so. Now this video explains the next level of mimicking realism in camera lens is AWESOME. Because before I always tried to mimic Angle, movement and color theme in CG camera, but now mimicking lens is really inspiring.

watching toy story 4 for the first time was an experience. constantly i was blown away by the amount of detail in each frame, and how effortless everything looked. this video really shows just how talented these pixar animators are.

My 12-year old is an animator and I have a background in it. And even though I'm long out of practice and she's only just beginning, I love that she and I can appreciate the impressive technical aspects of these cartoons. 🙂

I'm SO glad you included All the President's Men in the montage of split diopter examples. While, I wasn't familiar with the tech (I always assumed the effect was achieved in post), I did key in on the several split focus shots during a recent re-viewing of ATPM

2:52 even if you don’t feel it, all the small details add up to something convincing. It’s amazing how much an overall picture owes to seemingly insignificant details.
