- The age old question…how big of a motor can you slap in the smallest car you can find? On this episode of Stay Tuned, the guys go on a roadtrip to pick up Tony’s latest Facebook Marketplace purchase - a 1987 Mazda RX7 roller that he scooped for a cool $1,500! Do they keep it JDM original and put a screaming’ high RPM rotary back in it? Do they throw caution to the wind and put a big V8 in it and do hellacious burnouts? Stay Tuned to find out!

Thanks for preserving the vibe of stay tuned. Just some dudes in the garage doing things. Feels like doing shithead stuff with my buddies.
agreed
33:25 "Let the car take you where it wants to go." Truer project car words have never been spoken.
Watching you guys takes me (way) back to the late 60's when three of us, myself, best friend David and his uncle Sammy, replaced a 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 352 cu inch with a Ford Police Interceptor 406 cu inch monster. It had Mickey Thompson heads, Edelbrock intake manifold, with a Holley 850 cfm double pumper carburetor,. We didn't have to worry about how many MPG we got. We went through several sets of rear tires getting the tuning just right.
David's dad owned a Used Car lot with garage space in the back. It was a blast. Thanks for taking me back.
Thanks for taking me with you on that memory trip. Good times!
I didn't know the 406 was sold as a Police engine, thought they only got the 390 and 428 until the 429 and 460 came along.
@@hendo337 Good Lord hendo337, you're really taxing my memory. The engine came out of a wrecked 1962-63 Galaxie 500 police cruiser. It came with a Holley triple carb setup. We changed it out for the Edelbrock intake manifold with the Holley 850 because we liked the looks of it better than the triple setup, plus, the big Holley was easier to set up and maintain.
You are right in that the majority of Police cruisers came with the 390 Interceptor engine. Now whether different police jurisdictions could order a Galaxie with the 406 setup, I don't know.. I just remember what we took the engine out of. I do know that the 406 was short lived and was replaced by I guess the 427-428.
I also am pretty sure that the 406 was used for a short time in NASCAR before being replaced with the 427.
That must have been one hell of a ride👍🏼
Beer and a slice time. Ready to Stay Tuned. Can’t think of a better way to start the week. Thanks for the longer Ep.
Let's GO! This one was a haul but we wanted to get it going one way or another. This is 3 beer and 2 slice territory!
@@StayTunedTA HellYeah
my boy
Glad Tony is back at his original channel 'Stay Tuned'
cant wait to see this one progress. Tony seems pretty fired up about it so the sky is the limit i'm guessing
My first real car was a 1988 Mazda RX7 GXL. I found myself taking the bus to school way too often because it kept breaking down. Pushing carts and stocking shelves in the 90s just to dump it all into the money pit RX7. But it was fun as hell when it worked.
Wish Tony would upload daily. My favorite on CZcams
Cool project you guys! Always enjoy your content. Cheers from New Zealand!
I love that Tony has a flat top in the shop. Pizza oven next?
I’m ready! Thanks for watching!
HAHAH, we have discussed it!-TA
🎉 we been talking about this!!!!!
Yes!! The car is real fun and all, but all the while I was thinking "Ooooh man, that breakfast though, that's IT right there. EPIC."
Tony is the best. Why can't more people be like Tony?!!
The more I watch your channel, the more I love your content. I started with the blown marqui video, now rotary. and you drifted. love it!
Pup is singing Grateful Dead, awesome!
Love it. If you can't have what you want, at least you can have fun!
I had an 87 Turbo II with an LT1 and T56 in it. I outfitted it with all the best suspension mods and it was just magnificent. One of the most controllable, yet completely violent cars I've ever experienced. I miss it!
I’ve got a HCI LT1 95 Z28 and when I saw they were throwing a SBC back in it, I was hoping for a LT1 and a T56. Guarantee it’d be a rowdy setup
@@jrod.c5 Yeah, when you take 700 pounds out of an F-body, it wakes it up!!
That version of the RX7 I've always liked, bit of Initial D reference for those that know, but for those older, lovely car. Needs a 3 rotor in it from random places knocked together like that V8.... I mean it could be a thing right if you find rotor housings across the US. Think either Master Dahm or the Vargas brothers would be worth a try.
That thing is rowdy! Such a relatable build, I feel like I could recreate it. After so many years of watching other programs where they just throw tons of money at something like it was nothing, it is refreshing to see this kind of build.
Makes me miss my 89. Such an amazing looking car.
Oh hell yeah👍 you might have to enter in cleetus burnout comp 😉😄
Sick man! Love these videos! Amazing quality
Nice to see Rockies learning, spinning wrenches having fun !!
That thing is rad Tony, I can't wait to see more of it!
I get it, I really do, but I hate seeing V8 RX7's. I literally just walk away from them when I see them. Again, objectively I get it.
Easily one of the best shows on yt we need more!
MORE! I can't wait for the progression of this.
Finally got pizza in the intro! haha. Priorities. Nice work, fellas!
Pizza always wins! Thanks for watching!
This intro was sick. ‘Specially the punk music with the guy chilling in the engine bay
Finally an episode I enjoyed. It felt more home grage like and I love it. Put an exhaust on the thing and have some fun! Nice work guys.
These are my people. Food, coffee, beer and cars.
Screw the haters. Love it, takes me back to the V8 Vega era. 👏
Happy to hear im not the only one jammin out to marty robbins at the garage 😂
Regardless of my feelings on rotary engines, all 3 generations of the RX7 look rad.
Zack singing some Marty Robbins! Keep it coming!
When he first started talking rotary I was VERY disappointed. BUT NOW!! YEA BABY!!!!!!
I understand. I had a white '89 Mazda 10th anniversary turbo and it was so much fun! My wife had the first year, 1979 Mazda RX7! This thing sounds awesome on the road!
I'm fully in love with this hooptie
I've got a rebuilt 327 finally in my 67 Camaro, with a lot of the same parts. Just need tires and I can try it out. Should be as rowdy as this.
Great work and great show as usual 👍👍
Best part of tony being on Hagerty is the budget to play good music
That thing sounds fu*kin' mean when you drive by! Love it.....
This is such a weird sequel to Mario Bros.
😂😂😂😂
Awesome episode, Tony! Would love to see more episodes with this car!
My present (and first) project right now, is a 2004 RX-8 that I'm putting a LS 408 in it. I got the car for 1100$ (CAD), no engine, the rest of the car is complete. The 408 should put out around 500-600 HP N/A, but its build to take boost and the rotating assembly is rated to +1200 HP. 6l90e behind it. 2007 Ford explorer diff 8.8 . It not a cheap build (I'll have about 15 000$ just in the engine) but I'm at an age that I don't think I'll have the time and/or the budget to take that kind of project again. So I'm making it once, I want it right the first time 😉
Reminds me of a generation earlier and my 1st drive in my 300hp 350-powered Vega. What a thrill!
Loved the “duck inside and close the door” move. Doing dumb stuff is fun, getting away with it is even better.
Nice I'm putting an ls1/t56 in my white 87 right now. I put am lt1/t56 in it about 10 years ago and I'm bringing it back from the dead now 😎
A little bit more power for second gear burnouts. Wheel speed for the win. You and the crew do sweet work. I am glad to see you and the crew on the tubes.
Great ideas!!!
I'm just about to do the first start on my supercharged Buick 3800 V6 swapped RX7.
That should move that car pretty quick. I had a 98 Regal GS back in the day.
20 years ago in an issue of popular hot rodding there was a black Mitsubishi Starion / Dodge conquest with that GN swap and the full pro touring treatment, before it was even a thing. To this day it was the coolest starion I've ever seen.
@Frank Bullitt those Starion/Conquest cars are still damn good-looking cars. Too bad any that are worth having are out of my budget.
I didn't know you came down to Cecil County Dragan, man. That's awesome. I'm watching you right now, on March 31st, 2023.
I just picked up a 1990 Mazda RX-7 recently (N/A). After eventually sending the Apex seals into low orbit, I'm leaning towards 2.3L Duratec/MZ-R swap if a rebuild isn't possible. Figure it keeps it in the Mazda family, can throw a little boost on it and enjoy some track days. I wish the LS was less practical because it's hard to justify another engine for the same cost, performance, and parts availability... but man I just hate the sound of them for some reason.
Let’s go!!! Bro ,, dudes fn awesomeness absolutely love it
This is awesome! Long live the original Small Block Chevy!
Not that you need anyone's approval but. I like it.
Wow this is so cool, I found a 86 white with red interior that we put a rotary back into. Just finished the build this year. Started 3 years ago
I love that you guys built a car like this. Plenty of 18-25 years old building shitboxes like this.
You guys should really build a high revving 302 for this thing!
Tony is such a bad ass, super glad he got to roll in with Hagerty.
I enjoy your channel more than ANY of the greed driven MTC crap that they have to offer. A joy to watch....feels like im hanging out with my buds building a car
I'm just glad it's on CZcams and not their walled garden. Though sadly this is the last episode of stay tuned on here, and he's back on his own channel.
I had a similar love affair with rotarys just out of high school. I was a Mopar guy through and through and had a 72 Duster with a 318. But I wanted a sporty daily to drive once I graduated. I had my heart on a 280 Z but ended up buying a 79 RX-7. I drove that thing for a couple years and loved it, but it was very unreliable. But I loved that motor. I later bought two more, the last one with a JDM 12A that really ripped! They're so expensive to work on but they handle and drive so well. Still cool.
Absolutely love this build!
My favorite Rx7
Awesome little ripper1!
I feel like Tony secretly saw some of my videos with my e46 and sbc swap... The header/exhaust may be identical lol! Sounds just like it too. Rowdy
How about a parts list for what ya did? Fixing to Build a engine for my sons Chevy truck and that thing sounds great.
LFG! That was awesome best content this week and it's only Monday
Yoo brotha mad respect for u an crew love all your videos stay true thanks for being u brother
I had a '91 RX-7 I purchased new. Awesome car. Beautiful handling car.
I like how Tony and the engine match👍
I like the pace and style of this video and obviously the content
Mr. Angelo ; Mr. B. Here ! You build what makes you happy ! ( GREED ) is why prices are so high , they are clowns out there that will sit the high price parts . You see it at swap meets good price move parts , bad high prices ( GREED ) a year later they still have the parts ! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Fun stuff = I could smell it when you got it running right with the shiny carburetor / Loveit!!!!
"Overnight parts from Summit Racing" doesn't have the same ring to it.
Was that the Roadkill Mazdarati by the shipping containers???!!! Better let Freiburger and Finnegan know!
Liked, commented, and shared for the algorithm. Keep it up Tony! LS Fest this year?
Y'all gotta cause some chaos with that rotary!... Maybe swapped into an IROC?
Love this.
Did anyone else notice the yellow Mazda pick up next to a shipping container. I think you should give Finnegan and Freiburger and heads up if they're still looking for a Mazda truck to play with
Sweet, love it! Need to add a 177 super charger! That would put it over the top!
Tony Angelo and Dawgs!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Really cool project!
great episode
It would have been really cool if you explained why you have to attach the torque converter to the transmission before attaching it to the flywheel. That doesn't need to be a life lesson for first timers.
The first rx7 turbo you purchased in North Carolina I think I used to own from 1988-1994. The car was originally blue, then painted white in 1992, had a kaminari rear spoiler, airdam, and rear bumper valence. The car had an HKS downpipe and resonated midpipe, 15" enkei 92 mesh wheels, HKS air intake, the hks Fcon, and a pioneer stereo. The car actually had a turbo with an upgraded compressor wheel as well. The car had several other performance parts prior to when I sold it in 1994. Let me know if this was my old car.
FC is my favorite rotary. Was my first car. Can’t wait to get another.
Oh a V8 swap, how creative!
Tony has a very good personality and a good speaking voice and he's quite funny so good video
Its the perfect blend for tony Bad ass Asian ride with a muscle car heart. Cant wait to see it out and doing burnouts.
What? No Scrapple on the grill?
MMMMMM😀
we been talkin about that!!!😂
@@linguini666 You're in Scrapple Country! Get some of that fresh stuff and show us how to do it proper.🤪
Hahaha that was sick!! 😂
Would love too see more of these build
That thing is sick
"Nice buns baby" 😅
Absolutely epic gentlemen. One of the greatest shows on CZcams.
That’s the Rowdy-X7 Edition Limited
This show is so great!
I don’t know why people are wining about the small block . I think it’s retro cool at this point and still so grassroots easy and cheap to do . Maybe find a budget minded but decent 5 speed to get behind it .
Very cool! U forgot to grab that MK4 VW wagon, Tony. We all need a nAAArow 6 in our lives just for the noise they make!
Great episode btw Mazda still makes the 13b
Good music choice.
