    Wtf people everyone's complaining about an ad at the end of the video when they need the money to give kids free prosthetic arms, wow

    • @orangeandyoghurt
      @orangeandyoghurt Před 9 lety +26

      It's not about being an ad as such and about wanting to raise money, but the product placement is ill placed and comes super obvious plus out of the blue. That's just plain cheap and deceiving. I want to decide on my own whether I want to watch an ad or not. It should have been made clear from the start, it would have been no big deal.
      Btw, Microsoft is a very rich company and if it were only a call for social responsibility for raising money, there would be no need to cover the software as much. It would be enough to say: 'The used software Microsoft Note and the institutions x, y and z call out for your help, contributions and donations.' There would still have been a little product placement/honourable mention. But like this it feels like the social responsibility factor is only a minor side kick.

    the trouble with prosthetics that some people dont realize is that EVERY, SINGLE, ONE, of them has to be custom designed to fit the recipient. its not like clothes where it just has to kind of fit. not everyone has the same body size or the same amount of missing limb. the ability to quickly make custom designs with 3d printers is surely what will solve this problem. in a few decades all you will hav to do is get your nerves mapped out and body measured then in 6-8 business weeks youll hav a limb.

    @oBCHANo Před 9 lety +60

    Gotta be honest, I don't think they've solved a problem that others couldn't, I think they've just made a cheapo version of the real thing, and it's not even an advancement in anything, big deal, they are getting on the 3D printing hype train 5 years late. Like, it's fine for giving kids confidence and it's clearly a good thing as it makes them happy, but it looks like you could fall and all of the fingers would just break into pieces, and the demo of it gripping was on an empty water bottle? Is that all it can grasp and lift? Or was that just all they had at the time to demo it to the millions that could see this video?
    The real problem is the robotic arms that cost 50 grand only cost so much because of the research and development that goes in to them, and there is no infrastructure in place to manufacture them on a large scale. And the companies that are making these arms aren't looking to sell them on a large scale, instead they are just constantly making new versions and improving, and there is nothing special about them mechanically, the physical materials and technology are going to be pretty cheap. So if we want people to have well built functioning arms then somebody needs to push the development of bionic arms and get them down to a reasonable price, and while it's great for these kids, in the big picture making a barely functional cheapo version out of plastic is like putting a plaster on a knife wound.

      ***** History shows governments get replaced once the greed and corruption starts making the people suffer beyond what the military can handle. Democracy, communism, monarchy, republic, dictatorships, doesn't matter, all governments will fall eventually after they stop working for the people and only work for themselves. No government is immune to this. The US has it's own problems, the free market corporations have bought politicians, compared to communist countries where politicians just dip their hands into the communal pot directly.

There used to be a common remark about how Bill Gates was so rich, if he spent a million dollars per day, he wouldn't run out of money before his death. The reality is that Bill Gates actually spends more $1 million per day on average investing into these philanthropic endeavors.

Are you kidding me? Say "Microsoft" between every other word for all I care if Microsoft is helping fund and/or spread the word about this amazing organization. Love or hate Microsoft, they're doing a good thing. And by sponsoring this video, at the moment of writing this, at least 100,000 more people now know this organization exists, which is a WIN for the children whose lives are changed for the better because of them. Did you not see the amount of joy and appreciation in the kid's face when he leaped out of his chair to give Derek a hug? I teared up seeing how genuinely grateful he was. I was completely on-board with this video until it turned into a Microsoft advertisement. See, I'm one of those people who are annoyed by ads, and they create a negative reaction in me. It's awesome that Microsoft is getting involved with this project, but I don't need them paying people to tell me how great their products are. I quit watching this video around the 5-minute mark.

      Alright. Microsoft doesn't sponsor them and the team cat get enough funding to create an incredibly helpful project. Bear through it.

      ThatAweSomeRandomGamer It's unfortunate that the world works that way, at least in America.
      I guess the only thing to do is to bend over and take it. May as well, since the country is being overrun by pussies.

      Money makes the world go round M. Strange it's not only in America and if it gives them more funding then you shouldn't care if they put an ad especially sense they put the mentioning of it at the end of the video so you could literally just turn off the video and miss the ad.

      M. Strain Jr. It's a few seconds of advertisemnet to fund their project. Seems like a fair trade to me.

    "we don't feel like people should profit from children without an arm" - wonderful, however, the profit motive of gaining & maintaining a differential advantage others needs to be retired, it is an inefficient way to distribute resources, erodes collaborative efficiency & produces excessive concentrations of wealth.
    We are faced with what to replace capitalism with in the context of a technological post scarcity society. The best proposed socioeconomic system I'm aware of today is a "Resource Based Economy"

    I don't even mind the OneNote product placement, because that software really does rock.

    Ok. This is the one thing I have seen on the internet that has restored my hope in humanity. Most of the stuff we hear about is esoteric development that has no future outside of a lab, within a human lifespan anyway, or all of the things that we are doing to destroy our world for our great-great-grandchildren. Thank you so much Veritasium for showing this to the world... we kind of needed it.

      MonkeyFace yes its a great arm and it works great for the purpose of being a placeholder until he's older and can get a nice one, but he has no control besides close and open.
