- Meant to make a Song comp when he left. but never got round to making it, because I was too busy. Seen him getting a lot of stick from Arsenal fans after his 'inauspicious' time at Barcelona and I think some of this is very unfair. I understand the criticisms of his clumsiness and his defensive ability (which was good in 08-09 and 09-10, but went awol after that), but some people are criticizing his passing, which I don't agree with, so I decided to make this comp to show what he was once capable of.

Selling Song was one of Wenger's biggest mistakes. He was so important for us and since he left we've had no real defensive midfielders.

He's not so good on defend, however he is defensive midfielder that can make creativity, if you want to play him you need another defend midfield like what Liverpool did. I saw him once live, what a pass, he has that Fabregas pass technique on him.
Criminally underrated. We're crying out for a player of his quality in midfield right now.

We had Fabregas and Song in their primes, and a young hungry Wilshere in his peak as a midfield three, which was one of the best midfields in the country at that point. What let Arsenal down is not having a fully fit striker who could play and score consistently, and not having a reliable centre back pairing.

In his last couple of seasons with us Song turned into a beast of a deep playmaker. His killer passing ability was off the charts. I remember being insanely impressed at the way he played. Fabregas who had left a season before probably recommended Song at Barca and they came for him, and then ruined him by playing him as a defender. Alex Song was a fantastic player.

Too bad he came at the time we dont keep to our best players, I cried the day he left for Barcelona.
It's important to clarify his best qualities were the attacking ones, although his main position was DMF. It's amazing if you ask somebody to describe him, he would talk about endless runs etc. because of his appearance and descent. Not great dribble or first touch, but enough strengh and stamina and really excellent passing repertory.
The departure of players like him, Flamini, Hleb - those Wenger groomed from nowhere in instead of buying ready made stars that would have won him trophies was most ungrateful and they were happy or never got anywhere; what they achieved was to destroy the team rhythm. Wenger refused to buy Xabi Alonso to allow Song and Denilson develop with more playing time

Why can't we get him back? I am biased because he has been my favorite player for years, but still, we need a good DM with good build up play.

Already loved the guy, but if we could have taken his defensive contribution from his first couple of seasons in the holding position and found the right balance with his involvement in attacks (could have just taken a one to one talk with Arsene after the 11/12 season) then we'd have had one of the best midfielders in the league. Such a unique player. His departure's never been properly explained though, apparently he was a disruption to the harmony of the squad. Just wish we knew what the coaching staff did.

If he stayed, he would've ended up becoming a leader at Arsenal. I know things would be looking much better than they are now with this guy part of our defence. What could have been... Was not meant to be. He thought he saw a bigger picture at Barca, and it well could have been had the manager gave him a solid run, but that also was not meant to be.

First season he looked light weight and way out of sorts obviously he was still a teenager but boy did he grow into his skin and dominate !..donno how u missed that famous Dortmund assist wen he beat 3 defenders to cross for RVP .,feels like years of not playing in the Champions league against top quality teams has had a major impact on the quality of our players esp midfield..no longer do we have super laser eagle eyed technical visionary architects like Cazorla,Rosicky,nasri ,hleb,diaby making it very hard to create chances and unlock deep blocks

@@xc3274 glad Havertz has scored 2 goals recently. Rice can play CDM but he is not press resistant as Partey. But he offers better, athletism, awareness and decision making....I think Rice is a better player but not same player.

Song and Diaby were almost perfect Vieira and Gilberto replacements, they would've dominated games together with Fabregas if only Diaby were able to stay fit for more than a season. Wenger should've given him as many chances as he did for Diaby.
