From a hot-headed winger to arguably the world's best striker at his peak. PFA POTY, Golden Boot winner from 30 goals during his last season at the club as captain. Truly did drag Arsenal into the top 4 after the departures of Nasri and Fabregas. Many older fans despise him, but there's always the set of fans who grew up watching and idolising such players. Sure, their legacies should have been different. But you cannot deny the quality they all had which enticed us all into the club we all love.

And time proved that club actually hadn't Got any ambition that's why instead of improving from annual 3rd 4th league positions, we are seeing the club is finishing 8th and below. The club not buying big name players doesn't equal them actually telling him that he can leave nor not offering him a new contract. He was offered a contract but didn't wanna sign it. Arsenal waited to renegotiate later when there would be just 1 year left, but by then he had already met up with Man United behind Wenger's back and a few months later in the summer he told the club he wanted to leave for Man United.

@@rcmanization that's the narrative few of the fans built themselves without even reading actual news about what happened just because they wanted to hate van Persie because of that move.
Absolutely incorrect. Van Persie held the meeting with hierarchy before he left just to discuss the ambition of the club and whether club gonna provide him with what he wanted for the club and that was 'big name' signings and willingness to win big trophies. If he wanted to just leave arsenal, he wouldn't have held any meeting. Why would he meet with gazidiz etc? Use your brain. Yes we hated that move, I hate man united more than you so that transfer made me sick for months. I absolutely hated seeing him in man utd shirt but all that doesn't change facts which preceded his transfer. Go and read authentic articles before blindly making up things just because you hate what happened. Van Persie loved arsenal, he knew what the club meant probably because he played alongside the likes of Henry, Bergkamp, Pires, ljunberg who all loved arsenal so he had love for arsenal far more than your latest heroes like Sanchez, ozil who didn't give a Damn about the fans and the club but van Persie did but club let him down and let him down big time. His meeting with them was a proof of that, and lack of ambition was proved in years to come when we declined so massively because the club just didn't want to win but was only interested in money.

What a shame we don't have players like this anymore! Aubameyang may be decent, but he's never been on the level of a prime Van Persie. Back in the days of technical playmakers everywhere when we could pass the best teams off the park.
These days its depressing wasting the time to watch a game. So dull, slow, lacking intensity, miserable football, with few to zero great chances against anyone.

Coming back to this video in 2023.
RVP truly was a world class player and is severely underrated due to his injury history. I doubt many people outside of Arsenal fans (and probably not many of the younger generation of gooners even) have seen most of the clips in this video.
If he had managed to stay fit for the first 2/3 of his Arsenal career I have no doubt he would be spoken about as a legend along with the likes of Henry and Bergkamp. He was a class above almost everyone who’s played for the Arsenal in the Emirates era.
His lack of availability was one of the major reasons we weren’t successful in that period. He was incredible but sadly couldn’t be relied upon, and Arsene’s loyalty to him wasn’t paid back.
He was my favorite player as a youngster, but the way he left and stabbed Wenger in the back doing so is a betrayal I’ll never forget. Top player, absolute prick.

My favourite player of all time
He was such a baller as a youngster than unfortunatley the injuries happened if it were not for them.he would have had 200 goals in the premier league for sure and would be one of the greatest ever on par with messi ronaldo ibrahimovic aguero
He was overconfident as a youngster and he stated that he made a lot wrong choices because of that in his early days but you can see how positivley arrogant and cocky he was during his first few years at arsenal i mean just look at those filthy good goals they scream confidence and swagger

RVP is absolutely mental with the volleys, there never seems to be as much talk about it as other flairs but he's really on another level with his first touch, Van Basten-esque i dare say. That goal against Spain in 2014 says it all, I've got no words for it.

RVP was my favourite Arsenal striker, 0:45 and 2:31 are still my favourite RVP goals, was so gutted when he left for Man united, but considering the state of the club I can't even blame him anymore, his talent deserved at least 1 Prem title...if only he'd stayed fully fit for 07/08 and esp. 10/11; in that season i reckon it's no coincidence that our trophy challenges all fell away after he got injured scoring in that Carling cup final to get us back in the game, big game player with world class talent, our best Emirates-era player imo

"It is understood Van Persie was encouraged by the arrivals of Germany forward Lukas Podolski,France striker Olivier Giroud and - to the point where he was open to the idea of staying with or without a new contract.
But Wenger pulled him aside shortly before Sunday's friendly victory over Cologne, told him he would be sold if a deal could be reached and informed the Dutchman he was no longer part of his plans."
^ This is from David Ornstein's article here: www.bbc.com/sport/football/19179833
This is the biggest "What if" for me. What if we kept van Persie and rolled the dice? Would we have won the league? Would he have extended his contract? A fascinating scenario. I wish we had a season with him and Cazorla with Podolski and Theo on the wings.

    • @benbennemans
      @benbennemans Před 3 lety

They did not offer him a contract and they did not allow him to move to Juve (while they did allow Henry to go to Barca earlier and is hated far less for it, b/c it's a foreign club, but RvP was denied by Arsenal to go abroad). If you decide to hate on RVP (which you have not (yet)), you also must hate the board who cornered him into the decision to move to United. Besides, if a player is not good enough, then Arsenal will bench or sell him. Clubs are not loyal to mediocrity, so why is it expected that players are when the tables are turned? RVP was chosen as the best player of EPL when he was at Arsenal. He wanted to win titles with Arsenal, but they wanted to be the best book balancers of the league. They sold their best players each season. Then the question becomes: should a player like RvP have gone back to his home country without a single EPL trophy? There are horrible players out there with far more titles than RvP and that is an injustice as well. RvP was a wonderful player and one of the best strikers the EPL has ever seen. He deserved far more titles than what he eventually got.
