The micro switches and relays are mounted on the motor and cam plate which controls the worm gear cable that meshes with the gears in the housings. The mode of the sunroof is dependent on the ignition key position.
Hey Tim, I have the EXACT same issue as you describe... I replaced my gears and can never figure out WHEN those cams are SUPPOSED to stop??? So I watch them and close my sunroof JUST ENOUGH to keep it locked in... It REALLY is a VERY complicated system to understand and operate..🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Yes it’s overly complicated. I think there is a way to adjust it at the back and there is some plastic stop at the motor that usually breaks so it never stops where it should. The workaround is is to just lower it by ear or time it or look at the bars to make sure it’s locked. I prefer sunroofs like on my old VW GTI and Corrado that just went back into the roof of the car and disappeared. Those I used every time I drove but this is only a couple of inches of ventilation or a chore to get it in and out so I’m not likely to do it for every half hour drive. Etc.
I KNOW a lot of people just abandon the electric motor and convert it to a Porsche manual sunroof, But if ya check out the prices of the latches and receivers (Yes they are still available NEW) It’s a ridiculous price $$$
Where can you find the front clip for the sunroof that doesn't cost over $100?! I'm talking about the little part you flip down to unlock the front. I cant believe how hard it is to find it...and when you do its well over $100.
Great video. I decided to remodel the gear on fusion 360 and print it in abs. Worked great.
Sounds like the start of a Porsche parts company. Print 100 and sell on eBay and pay for your car.

I got the brass gears from Uro part and they are beautifully machined and the same price as the plastic gears
Sounds like the brass gears are the best way to go.
