Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive 10 year back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and bad-ass musicians to boot. They are currently celebrating their 10th anniversary with the original line up.
Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. The idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!
Btw, most official Band-Maid MV's have embedded English captions, you just need to switch them on. When they were crowding around the drummer they were pulling faces at her to try and put her off, they attempt it often! The bands stage antics can be hilarious!

@@AceofBadeReacts The thing is they really do mix genres in songs, no song is quite one genre. A great reaction to check out their diversity is the two in one "Manners" & "Black Hole". "Manners" is old school style bluesy/groove rock, "Black Hole" is sort of manic punk-prog mayhem! (and it is live)

When the guitarists gathered around the drummer, they were making funny faces at her on purpose to try to get her off-the-beat. It never happens. Akane, the drummer, seems to have an atomic clock in her head. She NEVER misses the beat. Please watch more Band Maid. It will be worth your time.
I’ve seen her miss once but it wasn’t that obvious. And it weren’t the others that did it; it was a cameraman at AfterShock I think.

@@AceofBadeReacts Akane Hirose is the High Priestess of the Temple of the Perfect Fill, lol. Phenomenal doesn't even begin to describe her talents. And by the way, her nickname is Gorilla by the way she pounds the skins and loves bananas. She also plays the trombone, lol.
They gathered around the drummer to make faces at her to try and mess up her timing, but it never works! In "Play", Saiki, the lead singer, tries to mess with the drummer, but ends up giggling from the drummers reaction, so fun! Also, the outfits vs the sound is exactly what Miku, the rhythm guitarist, the creator of the band calls "The Gap"!

Misa, the bassist, is called the "Barefoot Assassin" because she always performs barefooted and the all black maid costume in the early days of the band, was called an assassin maids costume by Miku, the bands founder, rhythm guitarist, and backup vocalist. I have seen Band Maid twice and I can tell you they are even better live than some of their music videos. Now if you like a hard rock instrumental, check out "From Now On", the official music video by Band Maid. Kanami, their lead guitarist, basically has a 4 minute shred fest with another solo thrown in by Misa.

reason, You just witnessed the the most technically proficient rock band out there. Each member is at the top of class regarding their
instrument. Combine that with Kanami's (lead guitarist) unbelievable song writing skills and their stage presence....you get the best
rock band out there. I know thats a bold statement....but keep listing to their 120 song catalogue and you will see what I mean. Don't
make the mistake most reviews make and try and pigeon hole them into a particular genre.....Band Maid is the genre....the have songs

The Maids are among the hardest working acts currently touring. Band-Maid pushes themselves and set stretch-goals for themselves. They often write music that is slightly beyond their capabilities and practice and experiment until they can play it. Over their ten years together they've all become masters of their instruments. Misa magically transitions between slap, plectrum, and finger-style bass. Akane can do 220+ BPM on kick drum and switches time signatures while always staying in-the-pocket. Miku didn't even know how to play guitar when she founded the band, she was one of two vocalists, but lead guitar Kanami Tono asked if one of them would learn to play rhythm guitar to fill out their sound. Miku pacticed until her fingers bled under Kanami-sensei's tutelage. Kanami has developed her own style of playing and her solos are awesome, but you need to listen carefully to Band=Maid, Kanami buries a lot of interesting riffs underneath Saiki's vocals. All you need to do is to listen to Saiki's vocals develop over the years to see how her breath control and singing have improved.
Band-Maid has a sense of humor. Miku thought that cute girls dressed as maids playing face-melting hard rock would provide a pleasant shock value that audiences would remember. The Maids troll each other on stage, during breaks and while performing. During an interview the band was asked if they had any particular goals, and Miku, their usual spokesperson, in deadpan seriousness, answered, "World Domination!"

Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band.
Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed.
Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors from Tokyo University.
Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Frequently snacks between songs.
MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls.
Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).

The Maid gathering around the drummer in this video is called “hengao,” or “strange faces,” playful silly face-making trying to make the drummer mess up. This sort of playfulness is part of their charm.

This was February 2020, just before their touring stopped for 2 1/2 years because of the pandemic. They started again in the middle of 2022 and have come to the States several times since. They have a lot of fun on the stage and it is contagious. Their concerts (or "servings") are a blast!

They did several online okyuji concerts during the height of the pandemic. The February 11, 2021 okyuji might be my favorite live performance of Band-Maid despite there not being an audience present. Everything about it is top notch, including the song set list, sound quality, performance, etc...

Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

Great Group to react with, these ladies are very talented. I grew up listening to the likes of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath...these ladies went right up to the top of my favorites when I first heard them(a few years ago). If you are partial to something more heavy listen to their song 'Moratorium'...but they have a lot of hard rock that is always changing and wonderful...you can't really go wrong with any of their songs. I hope you do more....

All you need to know about Band Maid is that they are their own genre. Pop, punk, rock, metal, sludge, speed. They do it all, and better than most. These girls are mega Talented. Easily one of the best bands on the planet.

And a thing about the maid outfits, Ace & Dollcake: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!

Based on Maid Cafes that are popular in Japan. Miku the Rhythm Guitarist worked in Maid Cafes before forming the band with the idea of playing rock music dressed as cute Maids. Over the ten years they have been together the band have changed their 'uniforms' to better suit individuals and make them more comfortable while still keeping the Cafe Maid idea. They write their own music and lyrics and are the live shows are simply unique. They finished their ten year tour in the US and Japan at Yokohama arena. It lasted three and a half hours and was a great celebration of their many styles of music. Unique and fun and long may they continue.

Band Maid is one of the most prolific bands I've ever seen in terms of producing quality music. It's not just about great singing, drumming, and guitar playing either (though they have all of that) it's the fact that they can bring those elements together to produce really good songs.

Hello. I really liked your video. For information, the musicians (the lead guitarist, the bassist and the drummer) once played blindfolded, for laughs, during a recording session in their studio. And Herman Li dressed as a maid to be heard by Band-Maid. They are a very high level rock band, but they like to have fun on stage. Their catalog of songs is huge. Obviously I'm a fan.

Welcome to the best rock/metal/progressive band in the world! I would say of all time … and I’ve been around since Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Rush and all the OG bands of the past. The lead singer is Saiki, the best female rock voice around and is probably ever. Her outfit is different from the others as she is the Queen maid. The bassist is MISA, otherwise known as the barefoot assassin and she dresses as one in the long black outfit. Akane is the awesome drummer who the other maids tried to joke with but she is just too good to mess up. Kanami is the genius at lead guitar. She now does the composing of the music for the band. You used to have kings of the rock guitar, like Eddie Van Halen, and now you have a Queen in Kanami. And the rhythm guitar/ back up vocalist and founder of the band is Miku, the most ADORABLE maid you ever want to meet. Full of energy and actually gave up lead singer (her voice was too high for rock/metal lead, but perfect for back up) to Saiki because Saiki has a lower tone more suited for the style of music. AND she learned guitar AFTER she formed the band because they needed a rhythm guitar so that Kanami can be more versatile and go off when needed. She has come a long way with Kanami as her teacher. AND she does most of the lyrics for the band as well. The perfect band. Oh, the maid outfits are intended to be a contrast to the style of music they play. I LOVE THIS BAND!!!

Band-Maid has been compared to more bands, past and present, than ANY band I’ve ever heard of. They cannot be pigeon-holed into any one genre because they play it all, sometimes multiple genres in one song. Suggestion: “Moratorium”, “Take it Higher” or if you want to hear an instrumental “Onset” or “From now on”. Oh, a two song combo video where they go from a Southern rock feel to a Punk song in “Manners/BlackHole”. Enjoy the rabbit hole that is Band-Maid.

All of the band originally had more traditional maid outfits but slowly incorporated their individual style into their personal outfit.
You are right that they are not a metal band. They call themselves a hard rock band but they play many genres including ballads, power ballads, pop, rock, progressive rock, hard rock, punk, metal, nu metal, and everything before in-between and beyond.
You did hear double bass. Their drummer, Akane, uses a double pedal on a single kick bass drum. She had double bass drums for a very short time but said she felt lost behind all of that hardware and went back to the double pedal single drum setup.
I don't know what musical style that you prefer but you can't go wrong by listening to Onset, From Now On, Moratorium, No God, Rinne, About Us, Play, Why Why Why, and my favorite Official Music Video of theirs Don't You Tell Me. The double bass kick drum on No God and Rinne will blow your mind. Have fun with it!

The drummer tried a more traditional maid outfit in the early days, but with those frilly skirts it doesn't work well for somebody sitting and using their legs energetically. So she went with sort of bicycle shorts with a short maid-like skirt and top.

"Ahegao" or "hangao" is the term used when one makes a funny face 😝 This is what you see when they all gather around Akane (A-ka-nay - Drums). The goal is to throw someone off beat or make them mess-up their playing. Legend say that Akane is the least likely to mess-up, where Saiki (Psy-che - Lead V) is most likely to mess-up. They first performed in US in 2016, Seattle, regularly touring the US and Europe. They returned to the US in 2022 to a sold-out 14 city tour. In 2013 they played Aftershock, toured and performed at Lallapalooza (it's by invite only) as only the 2nd Japanese band to play there. They killed it!!
The lead guitarist and the bassist stared piano lessons when they were 3 yo. Not unusual in Japan.
Miku, band founder, vocals, guitar designs the costumes and used to make them.
Many people do attend their concerts in Maid costumes, men and women.

I use both the Kitsune Up and Po in my tag as Babymetal was/is my favorite Kawaii Metal group followed closely by these Rock'n Maids!
"Po!" of course is the sound that a Pigeon makes..since Miku's name (rhythm guitar and vocals and founder of Band Maid) means Little Pigeon.
Babymetal opened the door for SOOO many other Japanese Rock and Metal acts to become better known by the West and I beleive that Band Maid was the group that took best advantage of that situation and became my Favorite Japanese Rock Band!!

The Ladies of Band-Maid call themselves a "Hard Rock" band, however they traverse the whole musical categories, from Pop to Punk, to Metal, to Classic Rock, Jazz to R&B, and they even throw classical music into their songs.
They had the extended bridge before the guitar solo, which is something they do quite often for live performances. They also will add extended intros, and solos during live performances. And they will change the bridges, intros and solos from tour to tour.
If you REALLY want to see and hear them in a Live setting, go to @realdocloco channel and watch the Ladies performance of Dice and Hate? taken from the Hulu stream of their performance at Lollapalooza 2023 in Chicago. Trust me, your jaw will hit the floor.

Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead.
Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition.
Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition.
Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music.
Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well)
So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance.
And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD!
ALL HAIL BAND MAID!!!!!
Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan.
Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning"
On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"...
The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited)
This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their CZcams channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill.
Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid.

The funny thing about “playing blindfolded” idea…. Travis Barker does it, makes a big deal out of it and people carry on as if he’s a genius. Meanwhile, there are clips of Akane (drums), MISA (bass) and Kanaml (lead guitar) all doing it at rehearsals as a fun game and never “big noting” themselves.

The maids were my introduction to Japanese rock and metal music. I'm not a big genre guy, but BAND-MAID calls themselves hard rock, so that's what I go with. One thing I've learned about Japanese bands is that if some recommends Group B on a video for Group A, there's a good chance that the two groups aren't going to sound like each other. Babymetal, BAND-MAID, Nemophila, Galneryus, Wagakki Band, Unlucky Morpheus, Asterism, LOVEBITES, Gacharic Spin, D_Drive, East of Eden, Paranoid Void, KOIAI, Ningen Isu . . . they're all distinct and shouldn't really build an expectation for one another other than they're all filled with great musicians.

The expectations were more metal? Well, then your next band to check out is 'Lovebites' and I would suggest their song 'Holy War (Live at Zepp DiverCity Toyko 2020)' to start with. Strap yourselves in! :) As for the experience with their instruments, you're right with ONE exception. Rhythm guitarist, second vocalist and band founder Miku Kobato only learned to play the guitar after she formed the band 10 years ago. She originally envisioned herself as the lead singer, but realized that her voice lacked a bit of power for this kind of music, so she brought Saiki (pronounced Sei-key) into the band and started playing guitar herself. You can also see her teacher on stage here. Lead guitarist and riff queen Kanami Tono. :)

BAND-MAID have songs that are more Metal influenced, like 'Black Hole', 'Different' and 'Rinne'. They have all kinds of songs in just about every genre you can think of. But anyway, I'd much rather see her dressed as a maid. Put Doll Cakes in the maid out fit. MISA, known as The Barefoot Assassin has always dressed a little different. Both she and lead singer Saiki have more black, MISA usually in all black. Even from the beginning in their very first Music Video 10 years ago, when their outfits switched from black and white to red, MISA and Saiki's were a darker red than the others and their trim was black instead of white.

The best rock band on the planet today. They do have some more metal-esque songs like Rinne, or Black Hole, but they play everything from Hard Rock, Classic Rock, Prog Rock, Punk, Metal and everything in between. Every one of their 120+ songs are worth a listen, but they are best experienced live. BTW, they do practice blindfolded so they can play without looking at their instruments.

6:17 - This concert was done on 2-14-20 and was their last live performance before the pandemic lockdown. This song (Domination) was song # 22 of 23 so you clearly see their high energy, talent, endurance, and dedication to their fans.
7:25 - They were all making funny faces at the drummer, Akane (Ah-Kah-Nay), to mess her up. This is called "Hengao" (funny face in Japanese) and they mess with each other during live performances just for fun.
11:24 - The "shredding" guitarists part has a deeper meaning. Miku (left) founded the band in 2013 and she didn't know how to play. She recruited Kanami (right guitarist) who taught her as the band grew over the years so this part is the Jedi master and padawan showcasing their talents together.

To get a sense of their range, try a 2 songs in 1 video of Manners, and Black Hole. For an energetic live, try Dice/HATE from their 2023 Lollapalooza gig. That clip is what a live rock performance should be.

This video was taken in February 2020, The album containing this song was released in February 2018.
The band was formed in July 2013, and founder Miku (rhythm guitarist) had never even touched a guitar when it was formed. Other performers have experience prior to the formation.

The "head thingy" word you're looking for is bonnet, lol! You were correct to note that all five ladies are in different variations of maid outfits. Kanami (lead guitar) and Miku (rhythm guitar) wear traditional maid outfits. MISA (bass) wears an "assassin maid" outfit that is based on Chinese designs. Lead singer Saiki wears an outfit more reminiscent of a governess or house marm outfit. Drummer Akane wears an outfit that is stylized to reference a traditional maid color pattern, but due to her need for more freedom of movement behind the drums, it is more sleek than an actual maid costume would normally be.

I can’t decide if Akane Herose, Tamu Murata, or Fumiya Morishita is my favorite drummer. Akane is the definition of happy drummer. Tamu bends space and time with her sticks. Fumiya makes drums crawl away in fear. Damn I wanna live in Japan for the music sene.

6:01 / 7:10 yes, familiarity with the instrument goes hand in hand with proficiency. as to the perceived darkness, it's never totally dark on stage. there's sufficient lighting so they can move about as they perform. it's just relative perception of light since we're 'blasted' with the band's lighting effects.

Best hard rock band on the planet. That said, they are genre defying. They are also supremely talented, best songwriters on Earth and it's not close, and more fun than a barrel of monkeys. They are addicting as hell, because they ALWAYS leave you feeling happier than you did beforehand. They will lift you up on their shoulders and carry you - the more you listen the more gobsmacked you will be. In short, they are a miracle band.

Akane (drummer) is almost never looking at the kit. She's just grinning and looking at the crowd and other band members. She's a machine.

The polyphia dudes think they're the last word but these women literally start with a blank sheet of stave paper, which is how they are on top of such complexity for several hours.
Also worth checking out is Akane's drum line extracted from "Shambles". Search " bandmaid Shambles drums only". Draw dropping.

Miku, the rhythm guitarist, didn’t know how to play the guitar when she started the band, Kanami, on lead guitar, is the primary songwriter and is a phenomenal composer incorporating many genres of music, Misa on bass and Akane on drums make up one of the best rhythm sections in rock. Lead vocals are primarily done by Saiki who was recruited by the former lead and now rhythm guitarist because she felt that her voice didn’t quite fit the band. Enjoy the ride!

guys do you really want to know who are Maid Band? there is a documentary video for each of the members except for one, who have 3 videos where you can know the history of them. on those videos you will understand why the members get gathering around the drummer, who gets really drunk in the concerts, who is the writer of the songs and music, but most of all, what kind of struggles they been passing to create the kind of band they are today. I really hope one day see you reacting to those videos because I will see them with you all over again. 👍🏻
