These girls are literally one of the best bands playing today. They have a huge, diverse catalog of music and no respect at all for the constraints of genre. That makes them hard to pin down for some people but for me it means that I can listen to them all day long even as my mood changes because they've got something that still hits right. They're hugely talented and yet humble and down-to-earth in a way that few musicians (nevermind entire bands) of their caliber are. On their US tour they came to my city to play for a crowd of 700 people. A short while later they played for 14000 back home. At both of those shows they left it all on stage as if they weren't even aware of the difference. Even if I didn't like their music there's no way I couldn't respect that.

Band Maid have just completed their tenth anniversary by touring the US and Japan. They finished off at the Yokohama arena and manage to make an arena as personal as a small theatre. The concert was less a concert than a celebration. Band Maid write their own music and lyrics and as they did at Yokohama make a three and a half hour concert just fly by. The band are based on Maid Cafes as Miku (red rose) worked in them while wanting to start a proper band. The music they play is varied and fun and their concerts are just unique. They are something special.

Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive 10 year back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and bad-ass musicians to boot. They are currently celebrating their 10th anniversary with the original line up.
At this time they were all wearing maid outfits, though MISA's (on bass) was Chinese inspired and Saiki's (lead singer) was Spanish inspired. MISA's nickname is The Barefoot Assassin - she plays barefoot and looks like an assassin!
And to think they play sets of 2+ hours at this level of intensity! I saw them live four times in October, they killed it every time!
Best wishes from the UK! See you soon.

Welcome to the world of Band-Maid. Two years ago I discovered them as you are doing here. My first two songs were the live versions of "Play" and "Choose Me." I first got into rock in the early 60s as a teen. Mostly dropped away from it and most US music in the late 80s. Band-Maid has brought me back to rock. They are a miracle band and if you look at their founding you'll realize that only a miracle brought them together. Only band I've ever known who loves their fans as much as their fans love them and says so in song. Have a blast in your journey.

I had the privilege of seeing them in 2022 (Fillmore - Silver Springs), and 2023 (Nashville- Brooklyn Bowl), they were awesome in each performance. They are always having fun on the stage like when they surround the drummer in this video and are making funny faces at her to see if she will laugh and mess up and she gives it back to them. You can see her stick her tongue out at them in Freedom (live) and laughing. They are always having fun on stage as I can attest to from both performances that I have attended. You can tell they are loving what they do.

Some thoughts: the idea of a "maid band" who play rock music came from the backup vocals and rhythm guitar Miku Kobato. She worked at a maid cafe in her home town and again after she moved to Tokyo. She liked the contrast of demure subservient maids serving you loud aggressive music. In fact, they call their performances "okyu-ji" (servings) and greet the audience with "Welcome home, masters and princesses!" It changes the relationship with their listeners. Instead of a tortured artiste agreeing to play for the privileged few, they are serving and entertaining (and baring their souls) for you. Then a chirpy small pigeon bounces up to the microphone to ask "Are you enjoy?" It makes it a personal experience.
It is unfair to both to compare Babymetal and Band-Maid too much. They are different concepts; they are both excellent at what they do. The original concept of Babymetal was to contrast idols with metal, with the three idols singing and dancing in front of a metal band. They were very young (and not that interesting to me personally), and very good at the concept. They had a lot of success. As they have matured, Su's voice has gotten much more interesting (to me) and it seems like the concept is morphing. They will probably always be a spectacle and she's not likely to ever become a nightclub singer (although I have absolutely no doubt that she would be excellent).
The five members of Band-Maid have different relationships with the maid concept. As you noticed, MISA was wearing all black and what Miku would call a "Chinese" maid dress (servant's attire) but they do stretch the boundaries of what a "maid's" dress actually is. Previously MISA worn an "assassin maid" dress, whatever that is! There is quite a bit of variation on the concept in the maid cafes in the Akihabara area of Tokyo, so whatever she's comfortable with is fine.
I'm glad you mentioned Kanami's arpeggios and how the vocal and guitar lines mesh. For me this is the most outstanding feature of Band-Maid. Kanami writes most of the music and the rest of the band fleshes it out. Kanami is beyond prolific. She writes very well-constructed songs that have "good bones." It seems like they never run out of ideas and I imagine they approach each verse, each transition, each bridge as a puzzle to be solved: How do we get from "here" to "there?" Having all five involved means they come up with tightly integrated orchestration with endless variety! This band rewards careful listening. Their songs stand up to repeated listens. They don't get old and trite. You'll find new things even after fifty listens. It's remarkable!
If you keep going and dig into their catalog you'll see what I mean. At some point you will have listened to some absolutely face-melting rock and roll song and someone will say "Oh, you should listen to the acoustic version!" or "Oh, you should listen to the Band-Maiko version!" When you do, you'll realize just how good the "bones" of the song actually are, and how many ways they can be rearranged into awesome music.

Aldo suggested something that WASN'T Babymetal? 🤣 Once you start delving into this band, you will be blown away by the writing and the way the songs are structured. There is a sort of orchestral quality to them. Layered very well and precise. You can listen to the song as a whole and really enjoy it but you start to deconstruct them with your ears you realize how much is going on. I'm 52 and grew up on 80s metal. No band has hit me this hard since Pantera and Band Maid are my, bar none, favorite band in the world. Very brief history of the band:
Miku Kobato came to Tokyo to be a star and was part of a pop group that went nowhere, and ended up working at a maid cafe (which you can see in the video for “Afterlife”). While working there she came up with the idea of cute looking maids playing really aggressive rock music, and called that juxtaposition “The Gap” (between what you see and what you hear). She envisioned herself as the singer.
Miku found Kanami Tōno, a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, online and pitched her the idea. Kanami would ultimately become the lead guitarist and principal composer of the band.
Kanami frequently played gigs with Akane Hirose, the drummer, and brought her into the fold.
Akane went to music academy with the bassist MISA (yes, all capitalized, and no, there is no family name. Just MISA). She was, like Akane, a working session musician, and was wary of joining a band after a previous negative experience but she ultimately joined in.
With the 4 piece formed, Miku realized her voice wasn’t quite right for the sound she was looking for, so she demoted herself from lead singer, and the band auditioned singers for the position, and they found Saiki Atsumi. At the recommendation of Kanami, Miku began to learn guitar, and is now their rhythm guitarist as well as backing/harmonizing vocalist and principal lyricist.
Generally speaking, Kanami writes the music, Miku writes the lyrics, Akane and MISA take Kanami’s compositions and then arrange their own parts, and Saiki makes the call for when the song is “done” because the other girls will keep writing and re-writing it otherwise. They all play their part, and have been going strong for 10 years, averaging one album release a year

That's the romanticized version of the story. Miku came up with the idea of the band and pitched it, though the conecpt of "the gap" already existed. It's literally the idea for Doll$boxx's "Take my chance" 2012 music video where even two of them are dressed as maids. After that, Miku worked together with the agency to form the band. Kanami was found by the manager who showed the video to Miku and every decision was vetted by management. I don't know why fans get upset with the story. It's thanks to Miku that we have the band, but she didn't do everything alone.

Good job!. You have made some very insightful observations for a first dive into this band. The first is that "personal live vs structural performance", if you continue watching their lives you will realize that these five girls are an absolute spectacle in themselves, something that you have also commented on as a sense of looseness and freedom.
Also you have pointed that classic sound (many of their fans are people who have been listening to rock since the 70's) with a personal and distinctive style. I hope you keep bringing them to your channel, you will see that they are masters of songwriting and queens of transitions. Thank you very much!

Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band.
Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed.
Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors from Tokyo University.
Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Frequently snacks between songs.
MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls.
Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).

Welcome aboard, Tim. You are embarking on (along with many others - over 190 million YT views plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (130+ songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: czcams.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/video.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Shambles, Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits (AniMaid) like Sense, Glory and Unleash!!!!! (from their own Anime MV (series?)): czcams.com/video/7LB_EPS48HE/video.html)
And many songs are represented with over 50 well produced music videos. czcams.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts:
     ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” czcams.com/video/nAdWnIRjGak/video.html
     Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA (February 14, 2020) “Domination” czcams.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/video.html

 “P and D⁴” 30+ Photo Collage videos at www.youtube.com/@PinD2/videos
And some of the better quality fan videos are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at an intimate venue:
 Shot by Pat McKee from their 2023 US tour concert in Detroit: czcams.com/video/DgxU-MVjta0/video.html

If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “StarQueen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 29 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 32 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 32 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 33 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 31 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.
    [BAND-MAID NEWS]
 BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the Acoustic Christmas 2021, ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! Fans can now see more than 50 great live performances with awesome audio, etc. like Fate, I Can't Live Without You and the great MISA / Kanami exchange in Don't You Tell Me. Those concerts are two of the best produced & performed concerts ever recorded, IMO. bandmaidprime.tokyo
 The Maids SOLD OUT 2023 US & Mexico tour wrapped up and was a fantastic success. And so many great live fancams to watch! Their playing and antics were as fresh and fun to experience from first show to last. BRAVO Band-Maid!!!!! In addition, their Japan tour finished up with 13 concerts, AND they’re writing and recording for their new album. Their 10th Anniversary Tour concluded at Japan’s 17,000 seat Yokohama Arena on Nov. 26, 2023 and in Hong Kong Dec. 21!
The Maids are one of the hardest working super groups in the business! Their music, their sound, each of the Maids, and the love that permeates their live events is an experience not to be missed. Hope you can catch them LIVE!

Band Maid begin in a very organic manner, even if Miku the founder already had a deal with a management company. "Hey, i really like this guitar player. Let me go chat and see if she'd be into doing this." Guitarist recruited and says, "I know this one drummer." Drummer then knows this bass player from school. Etc. They chose each other. You can tell they adore each other and love what they do. It really translates on stage.

Age: 29 Sai-Chan/ Tracks, Backing tracks, Arrangements
    2/8/94 Sensei (Teacher)
There is much more if you are interested. I will use the rest of this comment to address some of the things you brought up in your reaction.
At the beginning, you hear the last notes of the previous song, (Play, which is available on their YT channel) as the Ladies return to their pedal boards and reset for the next song. They took maybe 6 seconds between Play and the Domination. And the rhythm guitarist (Miku) was also playing the octave of the the Lead Singer (Saiki) while The Lead Guitarist (Kanami) was playing the melody line.
On the harmonies, Miku is actually a Mezzo Soprano, while Saiki the lead is a Contralto/Alto. Miku can sing lower and higher than Saiki but without the same vocal power.
As for a comparison between Band-Maid and Babymetal, I think Band-Maid edges into the lead due to the totally different vocal stylings. Babymetal is more "Cute" with and edge, while Band-Maid is more in your face "Hard Rock". Then there is the fact that Band-Maid writes and produces 98% of all their own music, plus they also play their instruments rather than having a backing band. So their music is more focused on the song, rather than the performance. Band-Maid doesn't have choreography or dancers on stage, it's just the 5 Ladies and their instruments.
And that was MISA (the bassist uses a Mononym) new uniform which was based on a cheongsam, Chinese maid dress. And her and Saiki's (Lead Singer) outfits are more aligned with their individual personalities.
This was an extended bridge section that the Ladies added for this particular series of shows. They have special custom intros, bridges and solos for some songs that change from year to year.
And the Ladies will either do a fade out, or a trash can ending on many of their songs. Unless they transition from one song directly into the next.
If you REALLY want to hear how they sound live, plus an added bridge/solo go to @realdocloco channel and watch his video of the Ladies as they performed Dice-Hate? at 2023 Lollapalooza in Chicago Illinois.
And you will find for the most part Band-Maid fans aka Maidiacs are some of the most polite fandoms. We range in ager from young kids to I've talked to a few in their 80's. I myself am 55 and these Ladies reinvigorated my love of music. Before I found them during the Pandemic, I mostly listened to the same 8 bands over and over. (RUSH, Boston, Styx, The Who, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Emerson Lake an Palmer). Because of the Ladies of Band-Maid I have rediscovered dozens and dozens of band from my childhood that I either never heard or had forgotten. (Missus Beastly, Flying Island, Trace, Mysterious Flying Orchestra, 707, Alan Parsons Project, Allman Brothers, Aphrodite's Child, Atlanta Rhythm Section and many many more.)
These Ladies are the real deal. I hope you keep checking out their music. They literally have NO, ZERO, NONE, NADA bad songs. Some are merely good, many are fantastic. But none are bad.

    • @greylocke100
      @greylocke100 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@GaryHolloway-810 Of course Good Sir.
Here is the rest of that file.
Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead.
Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition.
Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition.
Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music.
Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well)
So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance.
And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD!
      ALL HAIL BAND MAID!!!!!
Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan.

Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning"
On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"...
The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited)
This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their CZcams channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill.
Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid.
If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask. There are many of us who would be delighted to elucidate on Our Ladies of Maid.

10 year anniversary and it is still fun to watch people get their BAND MAID cherry popped ;) .
Miku Kobato's is playing her C24MF (MF = Metal Front) but she also now has a signature guitar, the "Flappy Pigeon" made by her sponsor, Zemaitis. PRS sponsors Kanami Tono. MISA MISA MISA is with Black Cloud and Akane Hirose is with TAMA. Saiki Atsumi used to use Sennheiser mics but switched to DPA. I am not sure if she is sponsored.
Not just anime ... MIKU, band founder worked in a Japanese maid cafe when she conceived the band, hence the maid theme. BAND MAID has always been a very accessible band, especially for us in the USA and EU. I have seen them twice, in halls that hold 1000 - 1500 people. Saiki has a background in acting. You can see it in her movements when she performs and all over her face. She also has a "yaeba smile", or teeth which makes her interesting to watch when she sings. I originally thought the PRS Kanami is playing in this video is her 35th anniversary "Angry Larry" model, which she is frequently seen with, but I believe this is her green one. It is hard to see due to the lighting. Saiki is the girl most typically referred to as "goth" ... while MISA MISA MISA'S parents were actually hippies. Akane is commonly referred to by fans as "the happiest drummer in the world". I am surprised you did not note all the girls up on the drum stand making faces at Akane trying to throw her off, or MIKU falling on her butt after the solo section.
    BAND MAID is:
Miku Kobato (小鳩 ミク) - rhythm guitar, vocals, PR (Band founder, lyricist ... our flappy pigeon, po!)
Kanami Tōno (遠乃 歌波) - lead guitar (musical composer extraordinaire - the princess)
Akane Hirose (廣瀬 茜) - drums, percussion (see bananas ... and ramen - the gorilla)
MISA MISA MISA - bass guitar (drinks hard liquor and performs without shoes on stage - the barefoot assassin)
Saiki Atsumi (厚見 彩姫) - lead vocals ("we dance in the palm of her hand" - Domination - The Queen)

Can I suggest either "Onset" official live or "From Now On" official MV (both instrumentals) both will prove just how good they really are ... then pick anything as the next one will be your favourite.
Hope to hear from you again really soon.
    Cheers

The bass players maid outfit is an older style traditional outfit. What they wear reflects their personalities. Both the singer and bass player are more introverted and quiet, while the other three are more outgoing. Mike, the rhythm guitar player and backup singer was a Japanese idol before forming Band Maid. She is the face of the group and is really out front, and her costume is the most elaborate.

Always fun to see the face of someone on their "maiden voyage" with this band. As good as your first experience is though, you will be surprised at how much your like of the band will exponentially increase over time. It gradually seeps in how many songs they've written, and how fantastic the songwriting is. You'll also see them upping their game in terms of musicianship throughout the years. Mostly though, they just radiate joy, fun and a positive view of life. They are also both a musician's band and an every man band. Seeing them in person should be a priority, too - it's like a big love fest (cheesy sounding but it's true.) I can't believe it but I think this is right about my 5th year anniversary as a Maidiac. I could write a book about how versatile, genre-bending, creative, exciting etc etc etc. But I'll stop. For now.

Ah, yes, the outfits. To make a short story long, Miku (rhythm guitar/backing vocals/lyricist) had worked in maid cafes and thought that a band dressed in outfits associated with sexy submissiveness playing hard, in-your-face rock would be a great hook. Kanami (lead guitar/songwriter/principal arranger) loved the idea, largely because she has no fashion sense and this way she never had to worry about what to wear on stage. Akane (drummer) thought the idea was dumb but fun, but didn't like how the costume restricted her movement. MISA (bass) hated the costumes, and almost didn't join because of them. After MISA's reaction, Miku only told Saiki (lead vocals) that they would wear 'cute costumes ' when performing. Saiki was horrified when she saw them, not because they were maid uniforms, but because they were boring and dowdy (Saiki is quite the fashionista).
Eventually, things came to a head, and Akane (the leader the band doesn't have) decreed that everyone could design their own outfits, as long as they stuck to the maid theme.
Kanami kept the traditional maid outfit.
Miku started heading deep into cosplay maid territory, like she owned stock in the ruffle-and-flounce factory.
Akane initially ditched the apron, shortened the skirt, and ripped out the shoulder seams of the blouse. Later, Miku helped her make a black and white jumper that suggests a maid uniform while leaving her limbs totally free.
Saiki took a Spanish head housekeeper's uniform, sexed it up, and emerged looking like a sexy dominatrix head maid.
And MISA showed up in a black dress, claiming it was a Croatian maid uniform. Or maybe Lithuanian. She finally went with Ninja maid uniform, because 'you'll never see her cleaning. ' Later, she switched to a Chinese servants outfit.
The above may not be correct in every detail, but it is true in spirit.

And a thing about the maid outfits, Tim: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all! Thx again, Tim!

I enjoyed your review; I'm seeing you for the first time. As to your comments about naysayers, remember music appreciation is purely subjective. For example,Band Maid has spoiled me over all other bands. I'm one of the very few who do not care so much for the other big name Japanese bands, with the exception of TRIDENT-my second favorite band. I think they lack the originality of Band Maid, and their music is too cookie cutter.
I've become a new subscriber, and will remain so as long as you review Band Maid songs once or twice a month. You will find we Maidiacs are very loyal and daily watch for reviews of their music. They have been together for 10 years and have well over 120 songs to their credit with not one bad song. I think you will continue to be impressed with their immense talents. Except for Miku, back up singer who writes most of the lyrics, the other members play 2 or more instruments. Their acoustic sets are especially well received. So,welcome aboard.

Hey James....i feel same way about TriDent and like them a lot. I think their style is very similiar to some BM hard rock style. It's tough when you dont have a lead guitarist and composer like Konami in your band. Also since there is only 3 of them it is even tougher to flesh out a wider sound when playing live compared to BM, BabyMetal and Lovebites....

To paraphrase a legendary showman........"You ain't seen nothing yet !!!" This is what happens when a young lady (band founder Miku Kobato-red flower wearing guitarist) follows her childhood dream to be a rock star. Her nickname is Kuruppo and she says po ! at the end of every sentence. And she has the soul of an 800 year old pigeon.
Along the way she recruits a dazzling guitarist and Mozart quality composer - Kanami Tono (she rocks that PRS you love so much, lol) is just a savant in complex and technical compositions that are always perfect. Her nickname is Mincho (shorty), but a lot of people call her Kanamincho to make it a bit more formal.
Next Kanami says she knows a great drummer, Akane Hirose a/ka Gorilla ( because she pounds the skins like a gorilla........and loves bananas). Akane is one of of the best drummers I have ever seen, male or female, even Jimmy Page compared her favorably to John Bonham. Like you have heard, her fills are magic and she never misses a hit, even when the rest of the band are crowding around making faces at her to break her concentration. She is also technically the band leader.
Next up is MISA MISA MISA, no last name, no lower case letters. She is an amazingly talented bassist with a tremendous feel for the music and is better than many of her peers. Her nickname is The Barefoot Assassin, because she always plays barefoot and because she didn't cotton to the maid costume as Miku designed. So she designated herself The Assassin Maid and solely wears black on stage.
Last, but definitely not LEAST is Saiki Atsumi, who came upon the scene when Miku realized her voice is not really cut out for hard rock. So they held auditions and brought Saiki, a singer and fashion model, into the fold. And here we have the final piece of the puzzle that has become the global sensation Band Maid. Saiki has turned out to be the perfect vocalist for the group and she has developed into one of the best rock vocalists and frontwomen in music today. Her voice is in perfect harmony with Miku's and they complement each other perfectly. Kanami has also delved into vocals herself and done a fine job.
You mentioned how more personal Band Maid is in comparison to Baby Metal and that is the understatement of the decade. I've been following music, mostly rock, since I saw Joey Dee and the Starliters in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1961 and haven't seen or heard of a rock band that was so enamored of their fans, and vice versa. Their shows are not just shows, but an experience to be seen to be believed. I've seen them 3 times since the fall of 2022 and they have been the best three shows I've ever been to. Except for calls of nature, they never leave the stage during their breaks and commiserate with the crowd in an amazingly sincere and genuine manner. For instance, while on their 2022 US Tour, Kanami decided to write an homage to the fans while they were on their tour bus, and wrote Memorable. They even filmed an ad hoc music video in California while they were here for the song. In addition Kanami was ill for a lot of the tour but was a real trouper in the exact sense of the word. They are like no other band I have ever seen or heard.
Enjoy your introduction to the best rock band on the planet. Sorry for the dissertation, lol.
