Mani Kaul’s unconventional and individualistic production Uski Roti is a solemn debut feature from the Hindi filmmaker. It's an innovational work of Parallel cinema and Kaul takes prominent divergences from the traditions of narrative, and the modest premise of a couple's accumulating estrangement as a wife begins to affirm her independence from a husband who expects subservience is put on display sketched with graceful imagery and depicted with a high quality of care. It's deconstructed arrangement has noticeably been influenced by the cinema of French director Robert Bresson, who Kaul proclaims as a crucial influence, and there's a subtle and purposeful usage of implausible on-and-off screen sound mixed with it's suspended editing. There's a broad range of wide-angle shots by cinematographer K. K. Mahajan, and the conscious decision to film the perishing marriage almost exclusively through silent imagery and a partially disjointed chronology enriches the account and establishes an anomalous narrative.
