    I would rate Eleuthera a 9.5 out of 10 for privacy, beauty, and kind locals. The roads can be a bit rough sometimes so I recommend renting a 4-wheel drive from the local car rental company. Easy to get around since there is only one main road - use the directions given to you and don't rely on Google to get you where you need to go. Plan plenty of time around meals as most of the island runs on island time. No one is in a rush here which makes it wonderful!

    Loved this beautiful video ! I’m a local who lives in Spanish Wells so just a little info at the Glass window bridge, it’s all Atlantic Ocean lol the lighter blue color is because it’s a lot more shallow 😅 the Bahamas isn’t part of the Caribbean Sea lol it’s more of a story that is believed by tourists .

    Nice review :)
    I recommend people not be afraid to go off piste a bit, a good 4x4 is helpful to see the best parts of the islands down south, at least if you appreciate a completely private beach. Rock sound and Tarpum Bay are definitely more rough and tumble but there's no safer and more honest place than eleuthera, and you'll be the only tourist around 9/10 times once you get away from Spanish wells and governor's harbor.

    • @lydianichols
      @lydianichols  Před 11 měsíci

      Thank you! This is a great recommendation - I would venture to say that renting a 4x4 is absolutely necessary for getting around the island. I didn't get a chance to venture to the south part of the Island and would love to do this on my next visit to Eleuthera. I love places that have little to no tourists so I'm sure I'd love it.

      @kirstencurley8274 Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@JaneKinneary I hope you love Eleuthera! It's quite literally my happy place and we're already planning our next two trips. The first tip I give anyone is to rent an SUV. The road to Skylarking, like 99% of the roads, is not paved and quite rocky. There aren't rental car companies like Enterprise or Avis, you'll be renting from private people. Don't let them give you a Nissan Cube. You won't make it to the cabin or to most of the beaches. The owner of Skylarking has a list of people you can rent from. We went with Robert Thompson based out of Daddy Joe's restaurant and rented a Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was perfect for the location. BTW, if a rental car company tells you there is a fee for using a credit card, don't use them, that practice is actually illegal in the Bahamas. Daddy Joe's is a terrific restaurant and the closest to the cabin. We also love the Sunset Room at the Rainbow Inn in Rainbow Bay and Twin Brothers in Alice Town. Food and gas are the most expensive things on the island as everything has to be brought in. We start our trips with food shopping at the North Eleuthera Shopping Center in The Bluff. They have the best variety and prices. Make sure to buy a couple gallons of water. We usually bring some non-perishable things with us like coffee. The kitchen in the cabin is fully equipped and well laid out but very small. It's tucked away so you won't feel like you're cooking right next to the bed. There are a number of staples like salt and pepper so don't feel you need to buy everything. The cabin itself is serene. The views are amazing. The porch is an extension of the main room so it doesn't feel like a one-room cabin. The bathroom is huge and has room to store bags/suitcases. We loved the outdoor shower. The cabin is off-grid, but you wouldn't know it. We've stayed at places on the grid and had sporadic power outages due to wind. There was a nasty wind storm while we were there in December and there were no issues with the power at Skylarking. We were able to keep our devices powered up as well. The WiFi is also very good. The beach and bay below are just lovely. We snorkeled and paddled almost every day and saw turtles, rays, and tons of fish. There is even a shark that comes through as well to say hi. The sunsets are amazing. We'd sit on the beach lounge chairs and watch the sun slip below the horizon. It's very dark at night so Skylarking is perfect for stargazing and watching for satellites. There is a saying on Eleuthera that it's not for everyone. If you're used to resorts or hotels, it's the exact opposite. Eleuthera is rural and services are sparse. There are only two or three ATMs. The closest one to Skylarking is on Harbour Island so plan ahead. A restaurant may say they take cards, but that can change day to day so be prepared. Bring water shoes with good soles, SPF 50 sunscreen, bug spray like Deep Woods Off (the noseeums will know it's your first trip and attempt to eat you. We actually had less of an issue at Skylarking because of the steady breeze off the water, but there is no avoiding them at sunset), antihistamines, and topical itch reliever. They're all available on the island, but trying to hunt down something you need on a Sunday or after dark is not fun. There are some things to avoid as well. Don't pay to feed the turtles. You'll see them if you look for them and feeding the turtles is actually harmful to them as a species. Don't leave anything valuable in your car and leave the doors unlocked. While we generally feel safe, we were warned last month about an uptick in petty crime and a smashed window on a rental car can quite literally put the renter out of business. If you want to visit one of the adjacent islands, go with Harbour Island. Spanish Wells was disappointing and after a lunch of two salads, a local beer, and a diet Coke costing $96, we found that Harbour Island was more interesting, had a better variety of food and shopping options, and the Pink Sand Beach is perfect for a lazy day. I hope this information helps and that you have a wonderful time.
