    Just happened across this video. This brings back memories. We had an old 18' center console Starcraft years ago. We used white Bedliner paint with the rubber bits for traction.
    We always ran it hard on the Great Lakes, so we ended up having to gusset the "chine" rib along the bow since it started cracking under the pounding. We also replaced a bunch of rivets with an air hammer and a steel block, then replaced the whole floor with marine plywood.
    Had an 88 Johnson without power tilt/trim. It would go between 40-45 on smooth water.
    Best boat we ever owned. Wish we hadn't sold it...

    The Starcraft is looking good! And hopefully we get to hear that motor fire up. She’s sparkin and ready!

    Up here, we don't call them "rewind starters" or "pull starters", we call them "recoils" lol.

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  Před 2 lety

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in! Yeah I always call them pull starters. I thought it was weird when I wrote rewind starter. Hahaha. I was thinking recoil and rewinding the rope and then Will Smith slapped Chris rock and it came out "rewind starter" Hahaha. By the time I realized what I wrote it was too late and already processing the final edit. It's a lot of work putting these vids together! Thanks again & Stay tuned !

    That looked too round for it to have been broken off. Those flywheels are made from a brittle cast aluminum...it should have been irregular and jagged.
    That was probably the hub sleeve. The flywheel's aluminum would bust under the torque of the top nut. And/or, it would not hold up to the minor forces against the woodruff key during even normal smooth operation. To prevent those problems, OMC designed them to have hubs made from the same grade of steel as the crankshaft. Those were then pressed into the flywheel, similar to a cylinder sleeve.
    They weren't designed to be replaced; in fact, I don't believe OMC ever sold replacement hubs. But there were many machine shops who had successfully milled new ones to replace some that had been chewed up from broken woodruff keys. The trick is to press it into position so that the new keyway is perfectly aligned in the same spot as the original--with extreme precision.
    So what looks like happened to that motor's flywheel: Someone had taken the topside apart, to include pulling the points cam. But when they reassembled it, they forgot to put the cam back on. The flywheel hub clamps down against the top of the cam when the top nut is torqued, so that the cam does not vibrate up and down. But if you torque down the flywheel without the cam underneath it, then you'll literally jam the tapered flywheel hub onto the crankshaft. The steel hub gets stretched so that it locks onto the crankshaft like a pair of vice grip pliers.
    After the guy put it all back together, he eventually broke that recoil spring after repeatedly yanking the shit out of the rope, never figuring out why he wasn't getting any spark at all. Which is even more hilarious, because the guy was really so clueless that he would get to that point before even thinking about pulling the flywheel back off and checking the ignition components.
    But after throwing additional profanity at the now-broken pull starter, the low-watt bulb in his head finally got barely bright enough for him to consider going back into the ignition.
    Only this time, the hammer and crowbar method of pulling the flywheel didn't work. At this point, it's safe to assume that he didn't give up easily with that...as we see with the recoil spring. So be in the lookout for a bent crankshaft too, lol! But finally he starts looking around for other ideas. After a few beers, he sees a wheel puller and decides to abuse the poor motor even further with that weapon. The hub is clamped down so hard onto the crankshaft, that he pulls the flywheel off of it after putting hydraulic press levels of force into the wheel puller.
    He likely never discovered the missing cam. Instead, he probably hurled another booklet of profanities at the motor. The last sentence was, "F**ck it!" The motor would later change hands once or twice more before landing in your care.
    A hilarious thought: you know one day, he found that cam just lying around. And he wondered, "Where the hell did that thing come from?" Still clueless.

      Hahaha! That was Great! I originally thought someone tried to take it off and forgot to take the nut off first. You may be right about the bent crankshaft, there was more video but I had to cut it short. Stay tuned ! Thanks again !

    Other companies make products similar to flex seal and they are much cheaper. Check ace hardware or harbor freight. If the motors were running your u tube channel would be called "this new outboard". 😁 A little c4 will take care of the rusted stuff,but it's harder to get it back together.

    Sir, I've got a lot of good info from some of your videos. I really appreciate it. Im having an issue with a 25R75B Johnson that I just got from a guy. It will start and idle. But it studders or coughs when you give it throttle. Then likes to die when you let off the throttle. Id be much appreciative if you have any advice for me.

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. First thing I always do is check for good compression and good spark on both cylinders. Then take the carb off and clean it. It has to be smokin clean and may need new parts. Then pull the flywheel off and inspect the ignition, replace any parts it needs, may need new points and condensers. If the points look good just clean and reset gap. Get some new spark plugs. Basically, just giving it a good tune up. Set the timing and fire it up and dial it in! Then if you still have a problem you'll have to find out why. Curious to know how it goes. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

      @@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 I really appreciate the response. Well, did everything up to the flywheel removal. So 95 and 98 psi compression, new plugs, fresh carb rebuild (also all new seal kit in the lower unit). And still having the same issue. Next on to the points, and electical system.

    Good job on the motor I have a question I have a 1971 yamaha 8hp it's had a lot of hours on it runs okay but I can hear a slight rattle when at full throttle it has low compression 100psi should be about 130psi should I continue using it or is it about to blow up I know its a vague question.
    Regards James

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. 100 psi is not bad. I had a 15hp Yamaha that rattled too. I tore it apart, it was the center crankshaft bearing. The problem was, the only way to replace the center bearing was to have the crankshaft pulled apart then pressed back together with the new bearing. Well, it's still sitting in my storage unit. Hahaha. Come to think of it, I had two of them with bearing problems. The second one I replaced the top and bottom bearing and left the middle one alone, it wasn't too bad. If I remember correctly I had to put the bearings in the freezer and the crankshaft on the grill to get the new bearings on or maybe it was the other way around! Hahaha. You'll have to make up your mind, tear it apart and figure out what's wrong, or let it ride! Thanks Again & Stay Tuned!
