I do not leave reviews very often , and almost never bad reviews. But Johnson Hardware thank you for making an easy DIY project frustratingly difficult. I've replaced and installed dozens of bifold doors in minutes. But after reading your instructions and watching your video and wrestling with your doors for a couple hours I've only successfully removed one of your bi fold doors. I have know signed off of all your products.

I had to shorten some bi-fold doors due to someone's bright idea of laying down tile around the door pivot hardware! The doors rubbed on the tile and didn't line up. So I trimmed 5/8 inch off and started to re-ajust the brackets and under closer inspection, noticed the guide stamps on pivot bracket. They appeared to be backwards, so I CZcams'd Johnson's to make sure. Thank goodness I did. Everything regarding install was wrong. I did as video instructed and now they work beautifully! Thanks for the tutorial and the great craftsmanship of your hardware. D. A.

The written instructions are almost absolutely worthless. The video helped a lot to bad it took me 2 days of wrestling with 72" of door for 2 days. Love "mount knob" see drawing … what drawing??? Directions aside, the doors themselves are quality a are the hardware. They are heavy but able to be installed much easier ONLY after watching the video. And pay very close attention to the initial measurements of all the pivot plates for easier adjustments to fit. Again, quality product directions supplied totally not.

This video is amazing. The attention to detail was very help in making sure I was installing the right bits onto the right ends of the doors. The only thing that I couldn't get behind was "Drop the casing to cover the wood strip" - if I could slide it down my wall like I lived in a Sketchup model, I would, but rather than ripping out all the trim nails and repainting the wall, I'm choosing to live without added refinement, haha.

To begin, thanks to all who have commented on their experience with the Johnson Hardware product and the installation process. Reading through the comments was as valuable as watching the installation video. First, after installing my first door ( 29.5" in a 30" opening) and taking my time doing so, I conclude that I like the product and appreciate the engineering. Too be fair, two sets of hands for heavy /solid core doors helps prevent carpenter frustration during the install as distinguished from any frustration with hardware. Here are my insights:
Step 1-HEADER: Once I learned that this is a "hanging system" I reinforced my header by sliding in some shims and /or 3/4" blocks between the jam-header and the rough header. Furthermore, the track screws (count your number of holes and then find that number in the bag) were longer than my 3/4 jam thickness, and so I feared they would bend the jam-header out of level as they bit into the rough header. Then when installing the track take care to position it leaving as much of an equal gap on both sides. Mine shifted, so on the pivot end I moved the pivot-lock device over just a tad by loosening the brass screw. By the way , "Pivot Door" = the hinge side in regular door installations. "Guide Door" (gets the white plastic bracket) is the one on the opening end.
Step 3--MOUNTING THE HARDWARE / PIVOT BRACKETS ON THE DOOR: Using a 4" Double Square / combination square is a proper tool for this step 3. The video is good at showing the measurements for each, BUT also use the square to position it in the center with equal space above and below. Be consistent here on all three brackets. Also, before installing the pivot bracket, be sure it is on the desired side. Because I needed the pivot to be on the right-hand side, I needed to install it on the opposite side of the one shown in the video (they used a left-side pivot). Then check the orientation of the hinges if you have received partially pre-assembled doors. My hinges came oriented for a left-hand pivot, so I had to reorient them to a right-pivot position. Johnston makes this easy as the holes align perfectly. Go slowly and gently so as not to strip the screw-holes.
Finally, for Step 4--Installing the bottom guide bracket (4:41) the video seems to show the tape measure extending from the track, not the header. Be more careful than I was and measure from the actual bottom of the header (above the track) so as to get an accurate measurement below to reflect the actual height of the door.
One more point, but on an aesthetic detail mentioned at the end of the video. I like the idea of covering the track with some wood trim. One, strengthening the track for this "hanging technology" is a good idea. But let a bifold be a bifold. Avoid adjusting header height by bringing down the casing and ruining the lines of the room. Instead, installing a 5/8 piece of trim against the track in that 3/4 gap provides a nice reveal in relation to the jam-header instead of trying to be a new one.

The video explains things perfectly. The written instructions on the plastic bag are vague to say the least. I have been a carpenter for many years, installed a half ton of these doors and I must say the 1700 series hardware works perfectly for me. As with any installation, you cannot rush it. I love the no drilling in the floor feature. Smart engineering. Makes perfect sense, especially, especially folks, when the floor is out of level...…. Thanks for the instructional video...…. g

Much better than the written instructions. HOWEVER, if you're putting the bifold into a pantry or other storage area that has shelves or other objects near the opening, the measurements might have to be adjusted or, possibly this particularly door may not work well. The doors swing approximately 2 inches into the opening. If you're shelves or other objects are about 2 inches or less from the doors (inside measurement), you have a problem. Doors may hit the shelves/object. I.e.,door won't open

Regarding the location of the door handles. If the doors bind, then the top and bottom pivots were not located 2" from the edge of the door to the center of the pins, or the top guide was not placed so the center of the guide pin is 1 1/2" from the edge of the guide door.

This kit comes supplied with Wickes bi-fold doors in the UK. Bottom jamb bracket is useless if you have transition thresholds at floor level, giving insufficient clearance to allow bottom pivot to fit into standard UK door openings. Replaced with competitive product with no such issues. Echo poor instructions comments - they really are that bad.

    @christwist8397 Před rokem +1

    Excellent Video.
For my installation, the height of the opening was 1/4" less than the required height. This is how I fixed it.
I used a hammer and chisel to countersink the two top brackets by 1/16", so that they are flush with the top of the door. Don't countersink them any further, since it will be impossible to attach the top pivot to the track.
Similarly, I countersank the bottom pivot by 1/8". The jamb bracket just grazes the bottom pivot, but it moves smoothly.
If the height of the opening is more than 1/4" too short, you should use a circular saw to shave some material off the bottom of the door. I don't recommend planing; this will be diificult since the bottom of the door probably contains horizontal and vertical sections of wood.

You just do the reverse of these instructions for the other side. Step 1, 2, 3, and 4 would be for a 4 panel opening, just do the same thing for both pair of panels that are hinged together. Step 5 - hang the doors, just do the same thing for both side (pair of panels). A good recommendation would be to do the first pair of panels that are folding to the right, then when you start on the pair of panels to the left watch the video again. Step 1 is mounting the track, so you would not have to watch that again. Or you could just read the step by step instructions for installation.

If the top guide just sits against the outside of the track opening, and if the pivot pin retainer is not meant to touch and therefore hold up the bottom of the door, how is the door hanging solely by the top pivot lock? Instructions written for products coming out of Asia have more intelligible instructions.

The 1705 guide (on 2nd panel) sits inside of the track, I am not sure what you mean by "sits against outside of track opening"? Go to Step 3 (minutes 3:26) that describes how to attach top pivot/guide/bottom pivot on panels. Then go to Step 5 (minute 5:25) that shows you how to hang doors and how the guide/ top pivot/bottom pivot go into position. That shows how the all of the weight is held by the top pivot going into the the pivot lock itself. At minute 6:36 it will show you how to put the bottom pivot into the bottom pivot bracket. The bottom pivot/bracket and 1705 guide simply guide the doors, all of the weight is held from the top pivot/pivot lock on 1st panel. If you watch the video from beginning to end it explains everything with pictures.
