  • Dive into the anatomy of a sneaker to better understand your clothing’s carbon footprint, and how to be a more responsible consumer.
    --
    Australians call them “runners." The British know them as “trainers.” Americans refer to them as “sneakers.” Whatever you call them, these casual shoes are worn by billions of people around the world. Today, roughly 23 billion shoes are produced each year. So, how can we balance our love of sneakers with the need for sustainability? Angel Chang explores how shoe manufacturing impacts our planet.

      I may be in the middle, i buy one pair for the cold seasons and another pair for the hot seasons. But it depends on the snickers itself, most of the shoes I've owned they were good for both cold and hot weather, the problem is that they last for less than a year maybe 6 to 8 months at best. I use them until they got holes in the canvas or the soles start to fall off which happens most of the time with adidas and nike shoes, the soles problem mostly with vans like models.

    I asked myself "How do we, Americans, buy 3 pairs of sneakers a year? I mean I wear each pair for a couple of years." Then I realized that I have a specialized pair of sneakers each for running, training, basketball, soccer, and just daily use. Funny that I don't do half of the stuff that I have a pair of specialized sneakers for to justify owning all of them.

      whats the difference between a shoe for running, training, basketball, and soccer?

    • @joshuaychung
      @joshuaychung Před 2 lety +3

      @@cv9541 I'm not sure if this was a serious question, but
      The running shoes have specialized heels and toes to aid you in running. There are a ton of differences between the manufacturers and models to fit your running style. When I'm standing in them, I feel like I'm slightly leaning forward. (My opinion.)
      The trainers are the general weight lifting / exercise shoes. Generally the heels and the toes are at the same height so you're much more balanced.
      The basketball shoes have the higher ankle supports.
      The soccer cleats have the studs (i.e. the spikes) so you get better traction on the soccer field.
      General walking shoes look more like the trainers, but they're more stylish I guess? I like whatever goes well with my jeans.

    I love my trainers, I literally wear them to death - till they are falling apart. Then I buy another beautiful pair and the circle continues. One pair usually lasts me on average 3 years. They are the most comfortable and versatile shoes ever IMO. Most fashion I care little for, but trainers I would miss dearly if they weren't available anymore.

    One sad truth about shoe manufactuing in Asia:
    US brand companies outsourcing labor in Southeast Asia and China where labor costs can be bought cheap. Then the local manufacturing firm will reduce the costs to profit from the contract between the US brand companies. Thus, results to non-compliance to labor standards such as minimum wage, social benefits and security of tenure.
