Protecting Allied critical undersea infrastructure

  • Undersea infrastructure such as cables and pipelines carry the vast amount of our Internet data, help us make trillions of dollars of financial transactions and transport 60 per cent of our oil and gas, so protecting such infrastructure is crucial to the well-being of our societies and to our security.
NATO has stepped up the protection of undersea infrastructure. For instance, it has increased the number of air and sea patrols in the Baltic Sea. NATO has also created an undersea infrastructure coordination cell designed to map risks and coordinate efforts between Allies, partner countries and national industries; and it has joined efforts with the European Union (EU) to improve the resilience of this critical infrastructure, through a NATO-EU dedicated task force.

I find it an interesting topic but i don't feel like this told me very much. Maybe we could have a longer piece that goes more in depth?

NATO has such an opportunity for more long form content with the resources at their disposal. Just look at the smarter every day submarine series, people love learning about their military and it can be done without compromising OPSEC

We need almost constant surveillance with lots of undersea drones on this critical infrastructure.
See that, slightly disturbed sand, next to that pipeline? Thats a remotely detonated mine! The drones need to be able to detect anything like an improvised explosive device, nearby.
Too, I can imagine us having 100's of smart mines, buried in the seafloor in the Taiwan Straights, ready to repel an invasion from China by sinking any ships. (Oops. Maybe I shouldn't have said that. 😲.)

Increasing national activities for these might be a good start. NATO is as good as its members, it is not a silver bullet that automatically wins without active input.
Sabotage like the balticconnector case is difficult to prevent since it can be done outside the territorial waters of any member countries and non-trivial to respond to since it can be made to look like an accident. Plausible deniability is the name of the game in these kinds of hybrid warfare incidents.

If you are interested to see how important (yeah, usually spamming people say this, haha) in youtube Jay Foreman has made a funny but interesting video about undersea cables. It is called "Internet Vs Ocean: the essential wires we never think about".
