  • Finally got out to my 1st paid shoot with my new Nikon D780 and lenses. Very disappointed with the Nikon 50mm F1.4G lens!
70% of the images were "soft" so it's being replaced with a Sigma 50mm F1.4 ART lens as we speak.
Also my initial thoughts on the D780 for my Pro. work (It's really nice to have a proper camera again after the "toy" Sony A7iii)

Apparently at 1.4 both the 50 & 85 are the same I have the 85mm 1.8 and it’s gorgeous can’t really tell the difference bokeh is superb and 2/3rds the price

Really? I was thinking about buying the 50mm 1.4 as well but I currently just purchased an 85mm 1.8 . I guess there’s no need?

Just paid £170 for a good second hand one, its not an amazing 50mm but still better than my previous.

I had the 50/1.4G for awhile recently used mostly on the D750, then on the D780. The lens I had was fine after AFFT and when stopped down to @ 2.8. To expect good wide open performance from a $300 lens is asking a bit much. I too shoot mostly people and very rarely shoot wide open. The 50/1.4G for me was acceptable by f/2 and sharp at f/2.8, so good enough IMO. The rendering and general IQ and bokeh was what bothered me the most and motivated me to spend the $ for the 58/1.4G. For me the 58 is nirvana, dreamy and strange wide open, sharp and predictable stopped down, one of my all time fav portrait lenses ever and I've been shooting Nikon since the FE came out!
Point being, the 50/1.4G is IMO cheap and very usable starting @ f/2, but the 58/1.4G lens is stellar and worth the money.
Allen, thank you so much for these videos. I value your opinion and appreciate your efforts.
    cheers

Thanks for that and I'm always looking for other people's view. I may well get the 58mm and try it. Ken Roberts reckons its a poser's lens and no better than the 50 1.4g. Nikon needed an expensive 50mm so came up with this as a pro lens but HE says little difference. I've always found its up to the individual to try it as we're all different and see things differently. Thanks Allen

And to add that DXO ranks the 58 1.4g Bottom!! Of the list of sigma and Nikon 50mm lenses. ??

Which 50mm do you use on Z body finally? Thanks.

So - the 50mm F1.8S lens is the best of the Z primes I have - (24. 35 and 50) The others are very ordinary and even the 50 is only good - not excellent. My favourite focal length (for weddings) is 35 so end up using the FTZ with my Sigma 35F1.4Art lens which is very good. However for those really special shots I use the Sigma 40mm F1.4Art on the FTZ - it's huge, heavy and a bit slow but wonderful images. I'm hanging out for the promised Nikon 35F1.2 S lens which I hope won't just be about sharpness - I'd get the 50F1.2S but 50 isn't my favourite focal length.
