I prefer to hear the opinion of a professional photographer that makes his living by taking pictures so i can understand his point of view than hearing a ''pro'' youtuber that he makes his living with clicks and likes and who don't use gear day in day out working. Regrettably very few professional photographers make content for you tube which, is dominated from channels that they just reviewing gear...
Looking forward for your next video...

I'm a relatively new photographer and after a while I started falling into a deep hole of losing creativity and becoming completely focused on gear and technicalities. I hated it. All I can say is that your channel has singlehandedly been responsible for getting me out of that and I thank you infinitely for it.

Your videos are a refreshing change from the CZcams "experts" ... it's great to hear from someone who is in the trenches day in and day out and making a living doing it. Well done! I bought my first Nikon F in 1974 and worked professionally in photography and design for years. Now retired after a different career, I'm primarily a landscape shooter and am amazed by the Z cameras and S lenses. I'm now in the process of transitioning from my F mounts (some back to 1974) to S mounts. I find your candid and straight up comments are exceedingly helpful in my transition decisions. Thanks!

Nikon 58 1.4G, the Nikon105 1.4e, the Nikon 28 1.4e- Nikon's luxury prime holy trinity. Now for my budget trinity, the Nikon 50mm 1.2 AIs, the 85 1.4 AIs, and the 35 1.4 AIs fitted on Nikon Df.

That 58mm is a magic lens. I did a shoot today for an interview, mostly indoors in a café, with my brand new Z7, this lens and the 24-70S. I offered my client to choose what she needed among 85 pics (25 shot with 58 and 60 shot with 24-70s)., and she mostly selected the pics shot with the 58mm: 17 shot with 58 and 4 shot with 24-70s. This has been a recurring pattern. I also confirm your finding that the 58mm shines on the Z, which is relief as I had to give it a +14 correction with the D850. I might still some day purchase the 50mm f/1.8s due to the enthusiastic reviews and the desire to benefit from all the advantages of native mount, but I will NEVER sell my 58mm G.

I started with 35-70mm f/2.8 push/pull lens (sold it) and then switched to all primes 24/58/85mm f/1.4G; these are my goto lens that I keep in the bag unless I need to go wide or telephoto. 58mm is a great lens! I love working with primes lens as they keep you on your toes and thinking. The only zoom I use now is the 14-24mm; and that only comes out when I really need to go really wide.

Brilliant video, loved the content from 3 years ago but what you say still applies today, thanks and just for the record - your delivery is just perfect, nice relaxed style, easy going yet getting the message across beautifully. Why am I viewing a video from 3 years ago, well I am contemplating getting the 58, I guess that you are now on the 50/f1.2 Z lens but for me a s/h 58 looks attractive to use on my DSLR and Z cameras and will give me a very different look than a 50/f1.4 or f1.8.

Your persona is fine. I enjoyed your frankness and freshness.
I own the 58. The character of the images it produces is like nothing else I have ever used. By "character," I mean there is an undefinable quality that makes you feel good when looking at them. There's a creaminess combined with articulation that brings to mind your favorite guitar solo. It's just right...!
That being said, I don't use it as much as I would like, because of the kind of Photography I do. I shoot a lot while hiking, and there are many. many times you simply can't "focus with your feet." There is a tree, or a rock or a cliff edge that prevents you from getting to where you would prefer to stand. Also in cities, it is at once too long and not long enough. I have been looking for a wider option for street work, that also had that beautiful bokeh for some time. I have settled on the new (relatively) Sigma 40mm F1.4, which is hands down the most optically perfect lens I have ever used (with auto-focus). And it has terrific bokeh too, although the 58 has the best. And for the longer street shots I resort to my trusty 70-200 F2.8. If I was doing weddings, engagements or more portraits type stuff, I am with you 100%, and my 58 would be my go to. It just has that "character..." Thanks again for sharing your wisdom with us!

You are to the point and don't embellish on the information you are sharing. Not being a "You-Tuber" but an actual working photographer is exactly why your content is sought after. I think people are tired of "influencers" who have no credibility (I will refrain from naming names, don't watch them anymore anyway) and you and your channel are a breath of fresh air. @flickrchannyuk4396 Před 4 lety +1

Hi Will, I agree that the 58mm 1.4G is a special lens. What I find interesting about it is how the fall off is so dramatic behind the critical point of focus compared to how softness in front of the point of focus. This is opposite to most other lenses I have used before. For shooting portraits and people in small spaces, this has enabled me to achieve greater subject isolation for the same subject to immediate background distance (than with other equivalent lenses).

I think there’s a lot of people that gravitate towards the more modern, tack sharp super clean rendering for lenses. I’ve had the best of the best that canon offers for portrait work and I still prefer my 58mm 1.4 for portrait work. Although, the Canon rf 50mm 1.2 has a nice balance of character and modern lens rendering.

Great video - thanks! Interesting to hear Your views on the Nikkor 58mm 1.4G. I use DX/APS-C cameras, and presently my favorite lens is the (expensive) Nikkor 35mm 1.4G - lovely lens and gives around the same focal length on my cameras.

the opinion we need is from a profesional photographer , not from a youtuber that is trying to make his living from afiliated links , ctr. . When this person that is giving his own personal opinion about his expiriense and is not obligated to any brand for any reason ( ambasador , or geting free stuff , ctr ) he has the luxury to be honest . The truth is not always filed unicorns and rainbows and some things must be sed ( u sould hear my opinion for the tamron g2 lenses dispite what everyone is saying after i spend 2850 to get them for my dslr's and was forced to sel them for 1800 beacose they were imosible to be calibrated corectly ) . keep up the good work !!!! and ignore the haters .

Excellent presentation and your enthusiasm and energy is great. There are only two kind of criticism and we should welcome both of them. Constructive criticism and jealous criticism. Constructive is great because we may learn something. However, the jealous one is even better because you know that you are doing better than the person criticising.

I shot my first event this weekend.(graduation party) I definitely learned alot of stuff that I can do better next time. The client was happy with my photos however I saw all the glaring flaws of my work/technique. I agree with you just about learning your gear really well. The venue was small and thank goodness I brought my 16-35mm. It was hard even with that to get all the groups in photos due to limited space. Unfortunately I didn't have a lot of time with that lens. I just need more experience and shooting time. My 2nd body had the 85mm 1.8... again a lens that I need a lot more practice with. It was a little eye opening experience. I know I can do better, I just need more practice. I'll admit that 100%

Nice introduction to the 58/1.4 Nikon Lense. I am still using my Leica -R Lenses from analog times and i can say. yes , this Lens has similary charakter . But I am missing one , but important capability of this Nikon Lense and that is its extraordinairy performance in low light and night light in a city . This Lense is designed for especialy not only one big light ,but for an environment at night were you have many different smaller lights, like street lights in a city or diffuse lights in a Bar room, for music events on stage with spot lights .....this is where the Nikon 58/1.4 realy shows what its been able to. A great professional Lens of highest Quality. Oh, I almost forgot to mention , : try this lens for Astrofotography...and you will be amased how clear and round the stars are.....

Really nice video with excellent samples. You convinced me to pick up this lens and a z6 to try out after selling my Sony setup which I never loved. I’ve been searching a ton for a 50ish lens with AF that has lots of character. Out of curiosity how does the af compare to the 50 1.8z especially using the new AF firmware?

    Hey William,
Can't really see how somebody can say bad things about you or about this channel when you clearly not a click bait type you-tuber or anything even close to those who just trying to sell equipment and gears. You are one the most honest and authentic you-tuber. You always speak your honest opinion with out being biased. Unfortunately there always will be haters regardless how awesome you or your channel is. Hope you can and you will ignore those pricks and honestly those individuals most likely don't know anything about wedding or even professional photography and I think it's a good reminder how great this channel is.
They have language issue?? Woow!! This is You tube, it's an international media platform where people uploading their stuff from all over the world. It's ok if the language or speech is not like what we see in the 7PM news, that's what people have to realize. Those who can't, just get a f out here and watch the TV or frono.

What has changed with me in regard to internet discussions about various photo equipment is that I want to see images, and not test chart photos or MTF scores and so on. I still believe that the real test of a photographer is not how much money one has spent on equipment, but those who have chosen wisely for the type of photography that one has decided on. With that said, the 58mm f/1.4 G is an excellent choice for pleasing images of subjects. It is never going to win the contest for razor sharp photography, but who cares about that when your final image has that 'wow' factor? The only knock that is undeniable about the 58 is that is overpriced. The second hand market softens the blow for that a bit.

Excellent video. It is a wonderful focal length, but suffers from severe chromatic aberration wide open on the D850 and very difficult to correct in Capture One. From your video, I'm pleased to see that it works well on the Z cameras. Otherwise, the Z 50/1.8 on the Z7 is superb, well corrected and has only a little purple fringing on the edges, easy to remove in post. Thanks for the review.

  • @takaharu
    @takaharu Před 5 lety +2

Marvellous insight, thanks. With the 50mm 1.4 there seemed to be some quirks compared with the 1.8 so I was skeptical of 1.4 lenses in general. Now, however, I wonder if those issues were unique to the DSLRs and not present in the Z series. The lens blur is much more elegant compared with the "radial" blur, as you mentioned. I was also on the fence about investing in a 24-70 2.8 but hearing about the benefits of the prime lenses makes much more sense, especially as the primes also have much wider apertures so I'm glad I stuck with the primes that I have. Kudos!

Loving the 58 on the Z6. While I still prefer the IQ overall on the D810, the Z6 fixes the autofocus nits of the 58 and makes a good pair. You did a great job with that video and convinced me to buy the Z6 to go with my 58. No regrets. Thx for your work.
