I found this really really intresting..my partner come home today talking about this big bee he saw and it had a red bottom or red ring at his bottom..so I thought i would reasearch what bee it was & this video is so helpful,i also love bumble bees,i will always try & help them as best as I can, they are forever getting caught in my green house & it's hot in there,so I have to keep an eye on it,as soon as one goes in I'm in after it,especially if I see it is getting stressed..

Found this after a quick search, what a great and clear presentation, thanks Andy. I have a series of 6 x 2" drain holes a couple of meters apart along a low retaining wall. In the past we've seen the cat wait by them for rodents and I've seen the odd rodent scurry in. This year, we've had very regular bee activity in at least three of them. The weather looks promising this weekend so I'm going to stick a camera by the most active one. Just been out for a look and I saw a small Buff-tailed strolling along the top of the wall, but meanwhile I think I saw a White-tailed or maybe Garden. But the other day I defo saw a red tailed Early. So, I'll get to the point. Do they mix and match like this, I seem to have 3 of the 8 already (or my eye-sight's rubbish!)

Many thanks for this . I have added it to my school website and FB page as I love to get the kids to identify bumblebees this time of year.
    Happy eco teacher!

Badgers have dug out three bumblebee nests on the side of our lane last week. So sad. They had been enjoying the lavender in our garden until this happened.

Another great and useful video! Is there someone I can contact to help me identify a potential bumblebee?

Hi. I have a bees nest somewhere around my roof it makes a droning loud enough to have me sleeping in the other room. Massive tree next to my house so I would imagine they are tree bumbles bees. I tried to look in the loft couldn't hear or see anything but look out the window and there are always a few dancing around outside as if they are not invited to the party. Most people would probably be able to sleep with the noise but I was diagnosed with gad so I find it impossible and highly irritating. We have just had new roofs put on and all the cavity insulation sucked out the wall. I asked the builders they said its a council issue , I asked the council they said its environmental , I asked environmental they said local beekeepers issue but didn't give me a contact number then didn't reply to me when I sarcastically replied to them about not knowing a beekeeper. I think the local council thinks beekeepers are like french onion sellers , one on the end of every road. This council are the worst of the worst. I don't wish to harm the bees but I don't want to be part of the hive either. Its right where I sleep I don't want a beehive hairdo. My landlord never ever answers his phone so I am in a quandary. Is the queen likely to hibernate elsewhere? If so will she be back next year? And why would she move if shes living in such lovely accommodation , my place is rent free. Does the queen simply have a breeding period then have to have a break from the situation so moves elsewhere. Grateful if you can give me a head up thank. Steve

Hi Steve, thank you for getting in touch about having a Tree bumblebee nest in your house. It is quite common for them to end up in inconvenient locations that don't quite suit their human landlords! And they can cause quite a bit of noise especially at night. But if you are happy to leave the nest where it is and not disturb them, then that is the best thing for them as they will carry out their lifecycle and in a couple of months usually by mid-July most of the colony will have died off, leaving the 'new queens' who will go off in search of somewhere cosy underground to hibernate over winter. This doesn't mean that they will return next year, but if you can find the entrance then you can block it up in the autumn, once you are sure that all nest activity has ceased.

I hope this helps! :) Emily
