Informative video, but you forgot to mention one of the hidden bolts. I found it the hard way, and it is the bolt next to the sump filter for the oil return pipe. :-)

Ian i forgot to say the Bandit MK1 i went to look at, it was a dog mate it needed so much doing to it, if it wasn't broken, cracked or dented it wasn't worth mentioning, im putting my time and effort into my Bandit i have now, done a service put my wheel decals on and my bar raisers, we are just planning a little tour around the country in June hooray....
I Feel your pain, I've been trying to buy a van with the same problems, let me know how planning goes for the tour!
My dad and I were able to watch this take apart the bandit and get it going in the right direction. Thanks we would have busted out the chisel. Luckily we watched your video by chance before taking the motor down.

Great show Ian, we all like Bill...wasn't easy to find the right issue ie part 6, on the You Tube listing but well worth the effort. Do like a load of nuts, bolts and bits to remember where they came from...I have an Alan...either write stuff down or get an Alan. Informative and well produced...nice one, deserves a huge audience...

I have a 99 mk1 600 which has a oil leak so need top end gaskets but mainly the gearbox from N 1st 2nd is horrible even worse when down shifting ......... I think this is out of my skill range . WILL BE RELTING ON YOUR VIDEOS FOR ALL MY ENGINE STUFF .........Super appreciate the time took to do this
Hey Dan, sorry about the slow reply. Have you fixed the problems? the 600s are a little different to a 1200 but are fairly close, it's worth getting a workshop manual 👍
I have still yet to undertake the challenge little daunted having to do head and bottom gasket. It's the timing that is worrying me

Been thinking of getting an Abba stand now that I have a GSXS without a centerstand like my Bandit 1200. Then I can use the stand to rebuild the Bandit like you are doing. Just a thought. Might be a fun project. Not sure what I will do with the Bandit as it had been a great bike.
I’ve recently got a new pair that are like sunglasses, with my old ones on it was like looking frosted glass! I do like the ABBA Skylift, I’ve just taken my turbo Bandit off it and I’m going to put the Hayabusa project on it so I can remove the wheels for powder coating and still move it around the garage

Im starting a Bandit O'clock marathon. I've all ready hit likes on the all about a yr ago. Now I'm taking notes and making a outline on the project at hand and Series part #. I have 50,500 on the odometer on my 98, but I change oil frequently. But she is do for a good make over , and I con get a spot at my pals shop.

I just changed the oil and put a couple hundred miles on her. Had to wait for the frost to melt. Not sure yet what all I'm going to do, but I would like to start out with one of those lifts !

Hi Dave, glad the video helped, yes a couple of sneaky bolts around the engine that stop it coming apart.
Wow fair bit to it just gotta remember how it all goes back together hahaha
And it now safe to say I'm not worried about a little wine just at the moment haha

I'm lucky if I forget how to put it back together I can watch the video back to see how it came apart 😉 I don't think I'll ever sell this bandit so worth getting it sorted so it lasts for may years to come.
That's the only problem with the bandit not worth trying to sell after all you done won't get the money back lol and probably won't be worth loads till another 20 years so many of them about still lol

The 3rd gear is the loudest,but just until 4K rpm.The 4th gear is not soo bad!Please answer me this question:this gears can make a bigger problem? Hi István, thank you for the kind comment. The gears make noise because of pitting and wear, you could leave it and get no problems for another 71,000km or they could go wrong in 1,000km you just can't tell when/if they will go wrong, I will keep this bike forever so want to make sure it will last 100%. Hi, friend. I have the same bandit and some kind of ticking began in the engine area after warming up. with what can be connected?! valve? tensioner?
I have a 2002 Bandit 1200, and I am thinking of rebuilding the engine. Is there any particular manual / publication that will help me walk through the process. My typical experience is rebuilding smaller size engines, but looking forward to the challenge. Also, are parts till available for this engine? Any advise you can provide will be greatly appreciated. I plan to watch you video to see what I can learn. Thanks... John P

May be you know what is wrong with my friends bike. Suzuki bandit 600cc 2003 reg year. can start it ride it litle but but if u go faster rpm go crazy and it’s shut off after couple seconds and it’s impossible to drive .
I have a Bandit 1200 07 with only 42000 km and I always change the engine oil every 6 or 7 months because I don't use it much. I went to change the oil recently and, for the first time, some bronze-colored filings appeared. I thought of the worst problems. So I removed the oil filter and opened it to check the amount of filings that were inside it and, to my surprise, there were no filings at all!!
How can there be filings in the oil and not in the filter? Any explanation for this problem?

I have an issue with my 1200 bandit it wont change gear, when setting off it will not change up to second or above but if i get up to some speed it will, but then it wont change down, i did have a gear crunch moment entering into a bend rather fast, but i was fine after just started few weeks later, i don't want to strip it unless i know i have too, been looking for answers for a while now
I have a gsf 600 gear box whining at 1st gear and whining get lower by each gear up shift what was the problem with youra ? Gear box bearings ? Pleaz i need your help
Fantastic video. I've just bought a 2000 Bandit 12 with 47,000 miles on it and I'm hoping she's still got lots of life in her. Didn't do any compression tests or anything. All I know is the engine started and sounded okay to my amateur ears! I'll definitely check out motorcyclespareparts.eu when I need pieces. Do you think it'll make a good buy? Only paid 700 Pound from an older man and i'm willing to put some time and money into it. Thanks and happy new year!

Great videos! Helping me a lot as I'm rebuilding a bandit and this is my first time rebuilding a motor. I made a rookie mistake of not keeping track of the bolts as I took them out. Do you know of any diagrams that have bolt locations? The ones I seem to have trouble matching up came from the crank case.
Hi John, good to hear you are getting stuck in, only thing I can think of is a parts diagram but when the bolts are just placed in they should all sit with the same gap if that makes any sense. All the best Shroomy
In my experience Japanese motorcycles have the crankcase bolts and their positions numbered
I'm like # 666, I waited until you split the crankcases to tell you that (ha yes I know you filmed this years ago just didn't want to give you any bad karma lol)
Just for the record bandits are just about bullet proof. 120,000 miles and just a spun rod bearing. I'll be sure to test the con rod stretch but if it's all ok it will go back together with factory parts.
I've given a few bandits a good thrashing on track and down the drag strip and they have always been great for me. WOW 120,000 miles, mine is only halfway there!

Thanks so much for the video! Do you have any advice to lock the clutch in order to unscrew it? Without the special Suzuki tool of course...(and I cannot put it in any gear, I think the gear selection axis is broken and I need to access it)

I have a 1996 bandit 600. I bought it wrecked, got it all prettied up again. When I ride it, it runs and drives perfect but occasionally after accelerating It does what feels like insane engine braking the bike will basically stop itself . Engine never cuts out but does feel sluggish like your dragging a car behind it when it happens. Any idea what that could be?!?!?!
I’ve checked the wheel bearing and changed the brake rotors to make sure those weren’t dragging. I’ve got almost nothing in the bike but I’m determined it will live. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Hi Blair, thanks for the question. It’s always hard to answer a question like this without experiencing it yourself but the first thing I would look at is the side stand and switch. If the side stand is loose it could be coming away from the switch that will kill the ignition and then going back in place to make the ignition live again and the bike seem to run as normal. Hope this make sense and hope you find the problem. Ian
Greeting! I watch your videos often and I think you’re doing a great job. I have a problem and I need your advice. I own a 2002 Bandita 1200, 67000 km. Fifth gear is problematic. I wonder if it is a problem that the engine vibrates very strongly after 4000 RPM. The engine goes like a rocket, pulls hands from shoulders, but those vibrations ... horror! Gostaria de saber se ai no seu país o preço dos dois rolamentos da transmisao da Bandit 1200 segue os códigos 09262-25051 e 09267-25011 tem o valor de 228,00 dólares e fazendo a conversão para a moeda brasileira dá um valor 1.290,00 reais . Eu acho que aqui no Brasil deve ser nem caro.

O preço dos dois rolamentos é de cerca de £ 180! Não tenho certeza se você tem uma loja de rolamentos como nós fazemos na Inglaterra, onde você pode pegar o rolamento antigo e eles irão combiná-lo com um novo e normalmente sai muito mais barato. Espero que você encontre um produto mais barato

I have 2000 Bandit 1200 and it's been sitting whole winter outside leaned on the kickstand . once i fired it up it idle but when shifted into a gear it stalls , so i decided to bypass the kickstand switch by connecting the two wires together after that it won't fire up , the crank shaft spins when starting also backfires . I checked ignition coils it shows 40ohm , manual says 2-4ohm.(i have power to everything else though) . any thoughts ? thanks again
Hi Sparkovi4, I would reconnect the side stand switch and see if it will start again. if it does start again I would make sure your clutch isn't stuck, I've had this before when you put it in gear the bike stalls and you try 2 or 3 times and then it becomes free and works fine after that. hope you get it sorted. @@Classicmotorbikes I ve tried to start it up with the kickstand switch reconnected but it would not fire up. One of the terminals on the neutral/sidestands diode changed in color(I suspected it to be faulty)I tested it for continuity and there's only continuity with
The terminals 2(red)/1, 2(red)/3
In the manual it said check for continuity terminals 1/2 an then 2/3 . Did I do it the right way?

i got 80k km on my 06 1200, i had problems with clutch sag, turned out to be clutch hydraulic fluid, lucky for now i managed with fluid change...will keep this info handy when it happens again, never had clutch replacement from new, and i think it will be coming soon if not later...its gone 50,000 miles already!

Much thanks for that video. It will help me a lot when dismantling my Bandit 600 engine. However i got problem with the last two bolts: ibb.co/sJ57Xj7 Screw number 2 on photo seems to be unboltable, but screw number 1 doesn't want to come out. I can't unscrew bolt number 2 because the socket wrench doesn't want to enter and the screw wouldn't have enough space to come out. You don't say anything about it in the video, how did you deal with it? I was stuck in this moment.
Hi Jakub, glad you find the video useful. To get bolt 2 out you will have to remove bolt 1, if you are having problems removing bolt 1 make sure bolt 2 has not been undone so bolt 1 can be removed, also bolt 1 is very tight and needs some force to undo it but be careful not to damage the hex in the bolt, when you have removed bolt 1 you should be able to remove bolt 2 just fine. hope this helps and I hope you get the bolts out ok.
