  • When the story of human history comes to a close, death and violence don't get the final word. The love of God does. That love, burning bright in the heart of Fr. Emil Kapaun in the darkness of a POW camp in the Korean war, made him a hero.

    Father Kapaun, thank you. I am a naturalized American and a native South Korean. I am also a Catholic. Father Kapaun didn't only save and serve the men he encountered in Korea. It is because of Father Kapaun that someone like me can even exist. I would not even have been born in 1962 to the still war torn and recovering Korea without the sacrifice of Fr. Kapaun and the American and UN forces service men and women. And my parents would not have been allowed to practice their Catholic faith. I am a CCD teacher to 5th graders at my parish in New York City. Our lesson plan for this coming Sunday is the Sacrament of Holy Orders. I plan to show this video to my 10 year olds as an example of what men who have received Holy Orders do in the service of God.

      I only recently learned of Fr. Kapaun. Two uncles served in the Korean War. One as a combat infantryman. One in the merchant marine. Dad was in Army basic training when orders were cut sending his unit to Korea. The week they were due to ship out, the Armistice ending combat was signed. Not enough people know how horrible it was..or why…and that China’s communists are still a curse upon China and an evil threat to all mankind. Covid wasn’t an accident.
      I live in St. Louis where Fr. Kapaun attended Kenrick seminary. May he pray for all who have suffered for Liberty, and for genuine peace among all. 🇺🇸🇰🇷

    As an Infantry squad leader in the 3rd battalion of the 8th cavalry regiment, I served with Father Kapaun during the battle of Unsan in November 1950 (and was a POW in camp 5 where he was also held). When we ran out of critical supplies and our total defeat by the Chinese army became obvious he volunteered to remain with the wounded while those of us still able to walk tried to make an escape. Most, if not all, that succeeded in leaving the perimeter were either killed or captured. He is a true hero of the Korean War and one of the most honorable men that I have ever met. And by-the-way, I am Baptist.

      Thank you for sharing and BEING a true spirit of the American historical imprint. My Dad was a "Screaming Eagle" in Korea. I thank our Lord that he faired well, except for possibly some PTSD. I was inspired by you, our Greatest Generation", and of course John Wayne, to join the Air Force. I'm glad you "exist" as you wrote..... and that men and women like these lay their lives down to preserve the lives of others. I would hope to be so brave! incidentally my father served in Korea. He claims that because he didn't see combat that doesn't "count" but I beg to differ:).

      AveMaria82100 Not true. According to your Pope they are converting to the church and it is the church that saves not the blood of Jesus Christ.

    • @BrianDempski
      @BrianDempski Před 9 lety +5

      mabellehardie The Vicar of Christ, the Pope, along with the Church Magisterium, were left by Jesus Christ to guide the faithful home to heaven through the sacraments. It is all there in the bible. Through the sacraments we receive grace and are saved; unless we eat, we will die.

    • @mattkennel
      @mattkennel Před 9 lety +3

      mabellehardie Why the dichotomy between the blood of Christ and the Church? That would be like saying that, according to Lutheranism, we aren't saved by the blood of Christ, we are saved by faith alone. It's a misunderstanding. The blood of Christ brings us into the Church. In fact, since the blood and water coming from Christ's side were the place where the Church was born, saying that you can be saved by the blood of Christ but NOT by the Church is like saying that you can hit a home run with a bat, but not with a ball.

      The saints come out of every people, tongue, kindred and nation, and all are brothers and sisters because God is their Father. As to unbelievers, the saints love them unconditionally because God does and because they are made in the Image and Likeness of God. It is precisely because they love sinners and unbelievers that they seek their conversion, just as doctors, nurses, and emergency responders seek to heal the sick and the injured so that they do not die. While it is indeed possible that a patient may refuse treatment and therefore die, or even deliberately kill himself, the medical personnel will do everything in their power to dissuade them from such a course.

    What a saint! Crying so much...how can man be so mindlessly evil? Thank God for men like Father Kapaun, so selflessly good and brave who demonstrate the other side of the coin! Reminds me of what the Chinese communists did to my Trappist brothers in China...a horrifically cruel, slow martyrdom. Communism has shown itself, shows itself, to be the most rancid, doul, terrible, atheist evil. This is what happens in a society where man is the measure of everything, and God - the infinite, the Most Holy - God the Creator is denied.

    Chris, Thank you for sharing this story. And, in all respect Sandy Miller, it DOES have everything to do with Fr.Kapaun being a Catholic priest. His life was inspired to serve God in the Catholic faith by being a priest, by giving up many other things that a secular life could have brought to him. He brought the real Body and Blood of Christ to these men. He answered the call of God and accepted the life he was given in that call. Of course other ministers of faith could do great works of sacrifice and love and they did. But this story is about a Catholic priest, a very specially gifted one.

    I’m almost finishing reading “Kapaun; Priest, Soldier, Korean War Hero” He lived to heal and to radiate hope when only darkness prevailed.

    Father Kapaun rose above the constraints of the human experience, war, countries, religions, and allowed himself to be a vessel of god and catalyst for spiritual evolution, for all to emulate. God bless his soul.

    I'm scratching my head wondering how anyone could thumbs down this video, but there are 164 of those as of today. Father forgive them as they know not what they are doing. Thank you Chris for this beautiful tribute.

    What an inspirational man of God full of Divine courage. The making of the crucifix by the Jewish man is amazing🙏
    Also I read that he used to pray to St. Dismas the good thief on Calvary!
    These martyrs are so inspirational for these totalitarian times we’re living through🙏
    Fr. Kapan pray for our broken world🙏

    This is a beautiful video... I've always found Fr. Kapaun's story to be inspiring, and by the will of God, someday hopefully he will be St. Emil Kaupan.
    One minor nitpick, though... at 1:18, the footage is not of Chinese People's Volunteer Army soldiers or North Korean Korean People's Army soldiers of 1950 vintage, but Soviet Red Army soldiers of not much later than 1942 (the giveaway at least to the date is in the shape of the helmets and the uniform details -- both were radically changed around mid '42 -- the helmet in particular for very obvious reasons, it looked too much like the German model for anyone's comfort...)
