I was organist in 1964 with the National English Pilgrimage led by Archbishop Heenan. I was deputising for Dr Reginald Dixon of Lancaster Cathedral who was ill and unable to travel. The pilgrimage was then held traditionally during Ascension Week. I was also kindly privileged by Canon Lesbordes (Director of Music at Lourdes) to play the organ during the torchlight procession ('Lauda Jerusalem'). The highlight of the week was playing for the Solemn Pontifical High Mass in the Basilica which was celebrated by Archbishop Heenan and English Diocesan Bishops and Clergy. (He hadn't yet received his 'Red Hat'). That was 57 years ago and I remember every detail as clearly as if it were yesterday! Ave. Maria. Gratia plena. Dominus tecum.
Beautiful tears come and go. This procession of all these lights is a place where heaven touch the earth where people come together peace begins to see each other with a little light for someone every day I am thankful for Lourdes every time I see this mother Maria see everybody every great and little child Thank you Lourdes for everything that you gave me

I had the pleasure of going there twice back in the 80's and from what I remember there was a baptism house that people were allowed to take part in to be baptised again before the procession. The one thing that stood out about that was that the water was really cold.... I'm not sure if its still there now because it was over 30 years ago and things change over time.
