    I think our hair care is just as important as skincare! I hope these tips are helpful and help you take a look at your hair care habits. I know a lot of people have been asking for my wavy hair routine, but I’m still trying to work it out. Video coming soon!

      I love, love, love Lilysilk! I have got my scrunchies, pillowcases and hairband from there. I really want to try their clothing too. Their products are such a good quality and also affordable ❤❤❤ you can definitely train your hair to wash it less frequently! Also it really depends on what styling products you use. I have wavy hair, so I use a curly jelly to hold my waves/curls but I just make sure it is not with harsh ingredients. However, your advice on not brushing your hair when wet is totally wrong! Wavy and curly hair MUST be brushed with fingers or wide tooth comb ONLY when wet and preferably with conditioner on. If you brush curly/wavy hair whilst dry, you damage your hair and curls.

    I don’t know if anyone has pointed this out in the comment section but referring to what Susan said about people telling her that they wash their hair everyday because if they don’t they’ll get really greasy! That is because you are stripping your scalp of the oils it has for hydration! Just like skin if you strip too much of it it will over-compensate! (I have oily hair myself and try to leave it alone for tow days) So take advantage of the quarantine to train your hair and start by washing it every other day! It might be greasy at first but then you’ll see that it won’t anymore!

    • @tatyribeiro5288
      @tatyribeiro5288 Před 4 lety +5

      And another importante thing is that your roots take 24h to completely naturally dry !! So if you don’t give it a rest, you are causing a lot of damage to the scalp and not letting it breathe! Trust me on this! You’ll see great improvement

    • @LeahisElToker
      @LeahisElToker Před 4 lety +2

      Me too, I tried not washing for a month because I was told that was the solution and I have also tried every other day to no avail. Some people just have naturally oily roots and need to wash everyday.

      @Gertrud Schmidt yep me too I have done the whole not wash hair or go every other day many times thinking it will change but nope nothing at all helps. I also have fine straight hair so this may just be an issue for people with this hair type.

    • @tatyribeiro5288
      @tatyribeiro5288 Před 3 lety

      Gertrud Schmidt Yeah I understand that, I myself have thin oily hair but its preferable that you’d spray it with dry shampoo for one night than wash every single day. You’re not letting your roots dry, besides compensating for the oil (which I know you’ve already addressed) you’re basically keeping the roots wet constantly, this can cause your roots to “rot” in sort of way and keep you from growing fresh new hair, it needs its oils to grow healthy. Also, check your shampoo, it might be the cause for your oiliness. If the second ingredient is SLS it might be stripping it so it feels the need to compensate, and also the way you wash it

    The best hair tip I've heard is to start brushing from the bottom and work up. It's less damaging than starting at the scalp and it's a lot less painful if your hair is tangled.

    If you are vegan, broke or less bougie, you can also use *satin* pillowcases. Please note, that it is artificial and sati as a fabric does not exist. Satin is made of polyester fabricated to satin. So if the little tag says it is polyester, it is not necessarily cheap crap, satin really is/can be polyester.
    Curly Girls brush their wet hair use a good amount of conditioner to do so, which gives enough slip to not damage the hair. If you have straight and dry hair, try it, as you very evenly distribute the product. But use enough product, start at the tips and comb your way up.

      You were right when you said that satin as a fabric does not exist, but then went on to say that satin is made out of polyester, which is a little bit confusing 🙃 There's also cotton satin on the market, it's just a way the fabric is woven. But it's true polyester satin is not necessarily cheap crap, in fact, I love my polyester satin sleep cap because it locks in the hair's moisture really well overnight. It's also probably way more durable than silk because there are no proteins to be degraded.

    • @Megan.Shines
      @Megan.Shines Před 4 lety +11

      I never ever blow dry and I have a looooot of hair. Some tips for heat-free dry time reduction: gently squeeze out hair with a microfiber towel or an old tshirt (or a regular towel if you're a lazy monster like me, but do as I say not as I do). NEVER rub your hair with the towel. Then put it in a turbie twist type of thing, or a new dry microfiber towel or old tshirt. After some time, take it out to air dry, flipping the part at the roots occasionally to help them dry faster. Touching the damp hair too much can increase frizz, so you have to find the technique and amount that works best for you, but moving and shifting the hair around gently allows for faster more even drying. As does increasing surface area, so I make sure my hair is fanned out across my back as much as possible. There's probably better processes, but this has helped take my dry time from around 24 hours to ~8 hours?

    • @ChristinaMagma
      @ChristinaMagma Před 4 lety +5

      Buy a microfiber towel, you’ll be able to dry your hair down 80% with a good towel, and let it air dry naturally afterwards.

    This is great!! Thank you for covering haircare too. I was just googling “who is the Susan Yara of haircare?” Some other tips: use a t-shirt instead of buying a microfiber towel, don’t use heat (instead use a diffuser and with the cool shot), do NOT use products with sulfates (which strip the oils away) or silicones (which coats your locks and only sulfates can remove), use a clarifying shampoo once a month to remove product buildup, comb through hair (ideally with fingers or a paddle brush) only when conditioner is in it and use a hair mask that has protein AND moisture as those two make up the most important balance to achieve healthy hair.

      You sound like someone following CGM ☺ I tried the method but gave up after seeing what the approved shampoos do to me: i.e. leave my hair greasy 🙁 but I agree with the other points. I have been following everything but the shampoo part

    • @BlackThorndRose
      @BlackThorndRose Před 4 lety +3

      Do you have very curly hair? Because some of these tips are conflicting. But it truly depends on one’s hair type and if they chemically treat it.
      A T-shirt is better than a towel in terms of being gentle on the hair, but if you can afford a quality microfiber cloth/turban, absolutely get one. It will soak up more moisture than anything else, and fast. Using the cool shot on a blow dryer with a diffuser is not really a good idea because it will not dry the hair any faster than normal air drying, so all you’re doing is ruffing up the hair, blowing out the cuticle which can be damaging and causing major frizz. Agreed that sulfates are a definite no, but there’s this stigma around silicones that all of them are bad, but that’s not the case. If you purchase salon grade products, they’re formulated with the correct type(s) of silicone, or even an alternative and don’t contain much of it. However, if your products are from the drugstore, that’s a whole different story. Not only will they contain massive amounts of silicones, but they also have other fillers such as waxes to coat the hair and make it look like it’s healthy even when it’s not. That’s when you really need a clarifying shampoo. But I agree that once or twice a month it’s good to use to remove that product buildup and hard water residue. As far as treatments, that should really be custom to each person’s hair type and what they do to it. Some people won’t need an entire protein treatment, some might get enough hydration from their conditioner and not need a mask, while others might be in need of both, or even some sort of a bond builder like Olaplex.

      @christinapellicane3557 Před 4 lety +1

      Great points! Yes I’m following the CGM (thanks to endless time in quarantine to learn all about it!). I guess my breadcrumb trail was too obvious 😂 I will say, my hair has never been healthier since starting it a couple weeks ago. But of course, not everything I suggested will work for everyone. I think we just need some more great content from Susan, the actual expert. Btw, I was surprised she supported using dry shampoo, even if it’s sparingly. It’s like she just suggested we use rubbing alcohol to remove the oil from our face 😳

      @@christinapellicane3557, I personally wouldn't refer to Susan as a hair expert. Advice such as dry shampoo and not brushing your hair wet was proof of that. She is definitely a skincare expert but not a haircare one. Well done that CGM is working well for you. I just didn't like the itchiness and greasiness of my scalp using low poo...

    First of all, you’re my favorite! Secondly, tip from a hair stylist I follow: don’t wait to use dry shampoo until you need it!!!! You should actually spray it in your hair when you have CLEAN hair. That way it helps to absorb the oil as it forms. If you wait for the oil to form and THEN try to cover it with dry shampoo, it’s too late and it just becomes a mess. Complete game changer. Hope this helps! xo

    I've learned to not wash my hair too often BUT also to not wash it too infrequently!
    I've tried washing my hair for just once a week for a couple of months because I heard that it's better to not wash your hair so often and that the more you wash it, the oilier it'll get or something. BUT I found that I was losing a lot of hair when doing this, and turns out that washing your hair not as frequently can also not be good because your hair follicles can get clogged if there's too much buildup.
    Everyone's hair is different, but I've found what works for me is washing my hair twice a week, or every 3-4 days. When my hair starts feeling dirty and oily, that's when I wash it (and that happens to be at day 3 or 4 for me). Because I wash right when I feel like my hair is dirty, I use less dry shampoo now too. I also only use it on the last day before I wash my hair for emergencies

      Also - ALWAYS brush your hair before washing them, I wash them leaning down in my shower, very gently wash them with little bit of shampoo dissolved in water (use a bottle or something) cause shampoo strips the natural oils of your skin and then it overproduces them which causes oily hair the next day. Then I brush my conditioner in and swear by this technique. Wash it. You can use a towel or a cotton shirt for a couple minutes. I usually shower with it on my head. Never had I have a problem with brushing my hair after the shower since doing this

    Using too much dry shampoo can even lead to hair loss!
    Also as a hairstylist I agree with all the tips.
    Also I have thick coarse curly hair so this is what works for curly hair too! And overprocessed and damaged.
    Don't wash your hair too often (use sulfate free shampoos or cowashes), once a week is optimal, don't brush it, dry it with a microfiber cloth or an old t shirt and be supergentle. If you have to brush it brush it when it's wet with either tangle teaser or Wet brush with loads of conditioner or a thick hair mask. Also use rebonding products, there is olaplex and some more budget options too. And use soft pillowcases. If you are cheap use a super soft cotton shirt over your pillowcase. Also I think this is self explanatory but use conditioners, masks, and leave ins regularely (the ones formulated for your hair type)
    And don't use heat! If you absolutely have to use a heat protectant!
    Use hair products with uv filters if you dye your hair.

    I love, love, love Lilysilk! I have got my scrunchies, pillowcases and hairband from there. I really want to try their clothing too. Their products are such a good quality and affordable ❤❤❤ you can definitely train your hair to wash it less frequently! Also it really depends on what styling products you use. I have wavy hair, so I use a curly jelly to hold my waves/curls but I just make sure it is not with harsh ingredients. Susan's advice on not brushing your hair wet is totally wrong! Wavy and curly hair MUST be brushed with fingers or wide tooth comb ONLY when wet and preferably with conditioner on. If you brush curly/wavy hair whilst dry, you damage your hair and curls.

    What are your thoughts on satin pillowcases/ products? I read that satin can be just as beneficial but cheaper because it's more readily available than silk

  • @alessandrarussell80
    @alessandrarussell80 Před 4 lety

    I already use a silk pillow and have for years. I'm half black and I hate having to wrap my hair every night. But lol. Also with my curls I brush my hair in the shower WHILE WET because brushing dry actually causes more damage to my hair while also ruining the texture of my curls. For my oils I use hempseed oil, raspberry seed oil and neem oil. And I do not touch my hair with a towel especially because I leave some of my conditioner in my hair. While I shampoo my hair once maybe every three weeks, I rinse it probably about five times a week then add product to keep in the moisture. Since I wear it in a "naturally styled" fro, to both dry and style it I literally whip my hair up and down and side to side a few times over probably ten minutes and then I'm good to go for my day.
    Also Susan, if you read this... I wondered if you had a recommendation. When I come out of the shower my hair comes first and I put the product in and then tie it back to moisturize my face. I use a cotton pad and Kiehls Calendula Herbal Extract Toner with a cotton pad to wipe off my face since my hair is so long and the product from my hair gets onto my face. If I don't wipe it off with something I end up breaking out. ( I wash my face at night and my skin is dry, it couldn't handle another wash, and I can only shower during the day or my hair would never dry). Is there another toner you would recommend for doing that? Or may I should just use water instead?

    Kitsch is having a bogofree sale on their site right now. I used to put my hair up in a turban but my hair was pretty thick and long, which only ended up hurting my neck/head. Kitsch has these microfiber scrunchies that absorb the water really fast! I could actually blow out my hair nicely in under 10 minutes after using their microfiber towel scrunchies :)

    My silk pillowcase and scrunchies keep my blowouts nice for awhile, I love them

  • @Megan.Shines
    @Megan.Shines Před 4 lety

    I have relatively long, relatively thick hair. If I just shampoo and condition and then leave it completely alone while it air dries and don't touch it at all, its about a 2b. Since I do play with my hair a lot, finger combing constantly throughout the day, it is basically straight. 24" long and 4.25" circumference ponytail. I do a loose braid and then tuck it up into a silk bonnet to sleep. I almost never use heat tools or use dry shampoo. I rarely brush (maybe a few times a month) and I don't own a comb.
    I got a balayage in my hair a few years back and having blonde parts of my hair for the first time in my life meant I had to learn how to tone for upkeep (since I'm much too frugal of a person to go to the salon for it on a regular basis. I went with a balayage specifically because I didn't need to go to the salon frequently for upkeep). Turns out, toning (and glossing) are super easy and low risk at home. I went to Sally's and got a huge thing of Ion level 10 developer and some tubes of Ion bright white demi in a few different shades ( snow cap which is sort of grey, lilac/lavender, and spring blossom which is pink) and just followed the instructions included, mixing some of each shade each time. When my balayage was still fresh, I did it probably every 6 weeks or so. Now that the balayage is mostly gone and only the bottom 25% of my hair is lighter, I tone/gloss less often and sometimes I use just clear demi and sometimes I use the toning demis.
    Also, I can testify that yes, your hair definitely adjusts to less washing. I washed my hair every night my entire life until I graduated high school. That summer I started getting interested in hair and started the transition to less frequent washings. At the time I had oily hair and that summer was a rough transition, but over time I was able to increase the time between washings. Now, almost 8 years later, I can go 5 days before my hair looks greasy and needs a wash.I probably in practice wash my hair 2 times a week. I can't imagine ever going back to washing it every time I showered, reducing hair washing has saved me sooo much time every day.
    Also, learning a little about moisture vs. protein for hair care can be so helpful. A couple years back I got into the curly girl method to try to see if I could increase my wave pattern. I eventually gave up because I play with my hair too much and treating like wavy hair and then touching it all throughout the day just leads to frizz and poofiness. But one big thing I learned is that my hair is less porous, so while a protein treatment a few times a year helps strengthen my hair, if I use conditioners with a lot of protein my hair becomes more brittle. And while some people's hair becomes mushy with too much moisture, my hair is best with a fair amount of it.

    Hi Susan, have you tried Josh Wood London hair products? Elle Macpherson raves about him in her Welleco site. Josh colours Elle's hair. I'm not quite there yet. However, I do like his Everything Mask, Shade Shot in smokey brunette to cool down red tones. I'm cool brunette with no red. Mix 50/50 with the mask. I also need to try his gloss products.
    What hairbrush do you use? Mason Pearson pure bristle is great and I know it's expensive but I believe it has improved my hair quality by bringing blood to the scalp (by brushing gently) x
