How Long Does it Take Skincare Products to Work? | Skincare with @Susan Yara

  • A big mistake I see people make with their skincare routines is they give up on products way too soon. You need to give them time to work before you decide whether a product is for you or not. That’s why I put together these guidelines on how long different types of products take to work from cleanser, treatments & serums, moisturizers, and more.

    You should definitely do a video on how to use products when you work night shift. What about on days you transition from days to nights (like for nurses you work three days a week so what about the days where you go from sleeping days to sleeping at night). When should you use what like retinol and vit c and oils. What about if you exercise too, like how does it change if you work out in the morning versus night. Should you cleanse if you know you're just going to shower in another hour or so?

    • @alexandrakey7207
      @alexandrakey7207 Před 4 lety +29

      Yes! Us nurses need some serious skincare help right now. The maskne is REAL. add hormonal acne, extra stress, wearing masks for up to 13 hours, and sweating.... I’m seriously struggling.

      @jamahlandrelaigo8288 Před 4 lety +14

      Omg this has been the question I have been wanting an answer to! I work at night and I sleep during the day, so that confuses me if it’s okay to use my night time products at night while at work and use my daytime products when I sleep during the day, or the other way around. I’m really hoping we get an answer on this, I currently use my night time products during the day before I sleep because for me that’s my “night”. 😩

    • @Dr__Feelgood
      @Dr__Feelgood Před 4 lety +4

      You shouldn't actually be shifting to sleeping at night on your days off. That is not good sleep hygiene but I understand that's better said than done for parents of young children, especially for the mothers who usually take the bulk of the child-rearing.

    I have learned that to see results in skin for texture, acne, things like that ,you need to work from the inside too. You can buy all the products in the world, your diet effects how your skin looks too. Not saying you have to be strict, but cutting back on some bad things like sugar, alcohol,etc...and increasing water intake, fruits ,veggies and other healthy changes or additions make a world of difference.

    First of all, I wish you well in your career and with Naturium! I am glad that you're back in business as usual. Remember Oprah said it wasn't her triumphs that made her who she is; it's her failures that built and strengthened her to what she is now.
    I have been using tretinoin (Rx retinoid) and benzoyl peroxide since I was 14 or 15 (34 now), way before I even found out retinoids are being used for wrinkles lol, but I was told by my dermatologist even back then that my skin would become horrid for 2 to 3 months before becoming smooth. And sure enough, the worsening did happen but I knew it was going to improve and that it was essential to NOT STOP during this stage because it was actually the sign that it was working. She didn't even tell me about possibly decreasing the frequency and buffering with a moisturizer (I'm a guy and was a teenager, I had none lol) and none of that BS that I think will just prolong the agony. And after 3 months, my friends and classmates started complimenting my skin and wondering what I was using when I didn't even notice any difference. THAT is the pot of gold at the end of the arduous journey. So this thinking has stayed with me since then and so I have never had the immediate expectations most people who've never dealt with severe acne have with skincare products for treatment.

    I love she talks about adjusting to products. I tell all of my clients that it takes at least 6-8 weeks to allow the skin to begin purging. Our skin changes every 28 days and it has a difficult time the older you get or if you are not treating it well. Foundation, sun and bad skin care.
    When a product begins to works it pushes all of the junk out of your skin from the deepest layers. You may actually think it’s causing you to break out more in the beginning but it’s the skin doing it’s job, filtering and purging out the system.
    Always give your products time to work. Skin care should be simple like water to your body all it needs is antioxidants and you should see slight changes immediately. Especially if your able to get a facial from a master esthetician. She can jump start your skins health.
    Just another perspective.

    In my late 20s I started getting melasma and really bad hormonal acne (the really painful kind), and although the acne has been manageable for the past 10 months or so, I had all the scars and hyperpigmentation to show for! I have spent thousands of $$ on different products and while some somewhat helped, I had never seen a DRASTIC change.... until I started using Naturium! And HOLY CRAP I’m seriously hooked!!! I have been using the Naturium face wash, Vitamin C super serum plus and retinol cream 2.5% for about 10 days now and have already seen MAJOR improvement in my skin tone and texture!! I haven’t been this excited and confident in my skin in a long time!! I just received the Niacinamide Serum and Hyaluronic Acid Essence in the mail today and am so excited to add them to my routine!!!!! 10000% recommend!!!

    I love this video! Question: how does pH factor into skincare. Many specialist say that there is little research about ph levels and efficacy?

    • @ciaochau2873
      @ciaochau2873 Před 4 lety +3

      PH plays important role in the body. Every part of your body will have different pH values which align the role of that part. For example, stomach has pH about 2-3 to digest food and act as a barrier to fight against pathogen/ bacteria that we consume from outside environment. Same with the skin. The facial skin has pH around 5.5 (other part of your skin will have slightly different pH values). On the skin, it’s an ecosystem. You will also have good and bad microbiomes living in there. PH is one of the factors ensure the ratio if bad and good microbes is balanced. So if pH changes and other factors on your skin change, it could switch the equilibrium to more preferable for this species and less preferable for the others. Doesn’t matter which one is good or bad, what your body wants is a balance ratio, the increase in growth of any species will not be ideal! That’s only in term of the skin. In term of the skin care products, everything will works best at its designed pH. There are so many ingredients in a skincare products working based on the pH of environment. Surfactant is a great example. You can find surfactants in every skincare products such as makeup remover (oil, micelle, balm), cleansers, shampoo, conditioner, body cleanser, even toner, cream, serum. I believe I can find at least 1 surfactant in any skincare products. Also preservatives, and active ingredients such as acids. All of these ingredients will have their own pH values. If the pH environment is different (only about less or more than 1-2pH values), they will work differently from what they are expected to. They could be less effective and even causes irritation, burning, sensitivity because their chemical structures changes. I don’t know why many specialists said little research about this topic because this is huge! I can easily find many books, research, literature papers from my uni library talking about this topic. Also as this topic is not a “wow” brand new topic, most the cosmetic brands nowadays when they formulate the products, they have already tested if the pH of the products aligned with the specification values. Those values should be quite close to the skin, not more than 7. And also our skin has the ability to adjust its pH go back to the ideal one which is 5.5. Therefore, most the products are formulated and used at the predictive ranges to ensure they work at the best conditions.

    • @foreversarah
      @foreversarah Před 4 lety

      PH is important from a formulation standpoint. Some actives become unstable, or inactive, outside of a certain PH range. So products with good formulation will take that into consideration and create a PH level within their product to create stability with the active ingredient.

    I started off using the Granactive Retinoid 2% from The Ordinary. I wasn't really seeing results. Then I switched to Retinol 0,5% in Squalane and when I first started I was using it under serums, moisturizer and even when I switched to using it only under moisturizer, I still felt that I was diluting it too much. So, I started using it on its own two nights in a row and I went through the acclimation period immediately, I experienced dryness and even peeling around my eyebrows and sides of my face but I started seeing results sooner. Now I've run out and I can't buy the Ordinary where I am without paying at least triple the normal price for it. So I bought the La Roche Posay Retinol after two months without any retinol products in my skincare routine and I am super excited to try it

    When you’re prescribed a retinoid (ex. tretinoin) for a specific purpose (ex. fighting acne), are you still getting other benefits that that product can provide (ex. anti-aging)? Or would you need to use a different type/formulation of retinol/retinoid to see anti-aging benefits?

    Susan could you please do a video talking about how we're supposed to choose skincare products when the weather changes? I've seen most people use different products during summer and winter but it's a struggle when choosing different products specially when a certain product has been working for you previously.

  • @EmersonSanPedro
    @EmersonSanPedro Před 4 lety +1

    All of the things that she point out are so true. I've been using Tretinoin for 4 months now. The first 2 months is the worst for me. Purging, pimples, dull, dry, blackheads started to get so noticeable and the ugly stage. After about 3 months my skin started to calm down. I can use it now every night. Biggest advise is to be patient and step back when your skin trying to tell you something while on tretinoin. Also niacinamide and colloidal Oatmeal on skincare did help my skin a lot during the treatment as well as tamanu oil.

    this was such an informational video! never really thought about this topic before so I really enjoyed it. I have a question - what gives the naturium's vitamin C serum the yellow color? And can we tell that it's oxidized if it turns into a darker brown color like what you said in the video? Thanks Susan!

    • @iMattCi89
      @iMattCi89 Před 4 lety +2

      I think it's from the gold that encapsulates the vitamin c complex. Once it penetrates past the stratum corneum, the encapsulation dissolves over time so its efficacy and absorption is better since there's less time exposed to oxygen for it to oxidize, and your skin isn't overwhelmed by so much vitamin c at once so there's less reaction. That's the theory I think.

    How do you use chemical exfoliants with retinoids and which products should you use? I’m a teenager with dry/acne-prone skin. I’ve got salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and Differin on my shelf (and I’m considering purchasing the Paula’s choice AHA/BHA exfoliant), but I’m too scared to use them all at once because o don’t understand how to layer them or which products cooperate with each other properly.

At first i thought it was just getting worse before it was going to get better but after over a month of my skin continuing to get worse ive given up. Should i have stuck with it a few more weeks or was i right to give up on it?
