The top two leading English goal scorers of all time (Kane and Rooney) are of direct Irish descent and both qualified to play for Ireland. Same with Maguire, Rice, Grealish, Phillips, and Bellingham. My point is the world is very multicultural now and players frequently are eligible for multiple nations. Ultimately, it’s up to those individuals to make the best choices for themselves in each situation. Nationality, ethnicity, and race are quickly blurring in a way that they haven’t for most of human history. What it means to be English, German, French, etc is quickly changing as migration and multiculturalism literally change the faces of nations. You can either fight it or accept it but it’s happening very quickly.

It should be who you are a citizen of. How many people are born somewhere but a citizen somewhere else? But limits so that someone can’t go changing nationality willy nilly. You need to be an actual citizen of that country. But it’s a bit grey for UK citizens because a player can go different ways to who they represent in football.

Despite being born in England, Williams is a proper Welsh name.
This is a similar case to Giggs. Each person feels a different level of attachment towards any certain aspect of their heritage.
My personal opinion is that all the home nations federations should be amalgamated into a uk team.
This will make the chances of "us" winning a major trophy much greater, and also create unity as a nation rather than devolution.

National identity and national representation in sport is nuanced. There's no hard and fast rule for what makes someone identify as one nationality over another. Let's not dance around the most obvious thing, which is that if you aren't good enough to play for England, there's a very good chance you will be good enough for the other home nations. Put genuine allegiance to one side; would you rather play twice for one national team or 100 times for a less favoured one, where you can carve out a significant international career. This obviously plays an important role for the likes of Ireland/Scotland/Wales. If Matty Cash was good enough for England, do you think he'd have eventually played for Poland? Course not.

I’m reading lots of comments about players supposedly not being “English”, “French”, “German” etc. What you’re really saying is those players are of African and Turkish ethnic and genetic origin. OK, let’s play that game then. Messi isn’t a South American using that logic. His roots are in Italy. Same for Cavani from Uruguay. Kane, Rooney, and Maguire are all of direct Irish descent. So they aren’t “English” by that logic too. Quite a few of you on here either don’t know the differences between nationality, ethnicity, and race or are just bigots basically saying that only white people can be Europeans.

On the other hand, England will pick players not even born in any of the home nations. I can only think of one player who played for Wales who wasn't even born in these islands. Pat Van Den Hauwe. How many have England had? Off the top of my head, we have Terry Butcher, Raheem Sterling, John Barnes, Luther Blissett and Owen Hargreaves (you could argue Matt Le Tissier as well, but I won't). So, the hypocrisy is pretty monumental given the number of English-born players that England have to choose from.
