    There are a lot of negative comments on all of these videos. As a server for nearly 15 years, I have never found videos that are as helpful, professional or as insightful as these. I am grateful for the knowledge you guys have shared. Your clear reverence is also a comfort, as this seems to be a common gap amongst many altar servers. We need to realise that we are assisting the priest in bringing Christ closer to the people. This is an honour higher than any other. Thank you to those who made these videos possible and to The Guild of St Tarcisius. A blessed feast day to all altar servers.

      Hi Hugh, it is key to be constructive in our comments. Also, this should be a pathway to the priesthood. We need to show the young men that once they complete their service, that there is a next step ie acolyte etc

      i spent 5 years in the Sem early 50s we were taught well. I get annoyed today when i see servers there for as i see it the show a good server never attracts attention to himself in fact he should hardly be noticed FR Brian Nicholson of the middlesborough diocese used to glide round the altar as if on wheels but never drew attention to himself. i came from a parish which had a great calling to vocations ST ALBANS DENABY MAIN HALLAM

    What an excellent video. I appreciate the pace, which gives a change for adequate observation and analysis of the responsibility of the turipher. I have a question: the video portion of incensing the Gospel does no show if the turipher remains next to the ambo during the reading of the Gospel. Could you clarify what is correct for the turipher, to leave the sanctuary or to remain on the said of the ambo while the Gospel is read?
    Also, another question: the incensing during the. consecration of the Body and Blood of Christ, is the turipher to stand up while swinging the turible or is he to incense while kneeling down?

    This means that a lay server can put incense into the thurible after Sanctus, if I have understood correctly? I have always wondered if I should go to the priest to have him place some insence while Sanctus is sung, or if I should put it myself.

    Thanks! One of the dads at my parish has been trying to get me to lift the thurible chain like the MC does in the video for ages, and now I have seen it.
    Also, I think the priest's swings are interesting. He clinks the chain every time at the entrance, but not at the Offertory...the 2nd is much more in the trad. Dominican style.

    We do need to update this video to have the rubrics better align with tradition. Allow me to focus on the rubrics that follow the Offertory Incensation of the Altar. Part of the problem is that in 2012, we held to the possibility that the Thurifer might be female. It would have been most inappropriate for a female Thurifer to incense the Priest. Since then we have made this assignment strictly for boys.
    Therefore the following are the updated rubrics, which will be present in the Second Edition of the Server Manual:
    The rubrics below are the traditional rubrics of the Roman Rite. However, at any point after being incensed, Deacon may request the thurible back. If so, hand it to him, and he will finish the incensations.
    If a Deacon is present:
    ----------------------------
    Deacon incenses the Priest with three double swings
    Deacon incenses the other Deacon at the Altar with two double swings
    Deacon incenses other clerics in the sanctuary with two double swingsDeacon gives thurible to Thurifer
    Thurifer incenses Deacon with two double swings
    Thurifer incenses MC and Missal Assistant with one double swing each
    Thurifer incenses Altar Server One and Two with one double swing each
    Thurifer incenses group(s) of servers with three double swings - center, his left, his right
    Thurifer incenses group(s) of faithful with three double or single swings - center, his left, his right.
    If NO Deacon is present (or if he delegates the function):
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    MC incenses the Priest with three double swings
    MC incenses any Deacons at the Altar with two double swings
    MC incenses other clerics in the sanctuary with two double swings
    MC gives thurible to Thurifer
    Thurifer incenses MC and Missal Assistant with one double swing each
    Thurifer incenses Altar Server One and Two with one double swing each
    Thurifer incenses group(s) of servers with three double swings - center, his left, his right
    Thurifer incenses group(s) of faithful with three double or single swings - center, his left, his right.
    "...the Priest, because of his sacred ministry, and the people, by reason of their baptismal dignity, may be incensed by the Deacon or by another minister." GIRM, paragraph 75

    @speaks3703 Před 5 lety +1

    There are definitely a few errors here. Setting aside how painfully slowly and gently the thurible is being swung (which I assume is for illustrative purposes only), the method of swinging is incorrect. The deacon or MC (if present) should cense the celebrant (and bishop, if present), but the thurifer (NOT the deacon/MC) should cense everyone else, including the deacon/MC. When censing a group of three or more, as with the group of servers pictured here, they should be incensed with three swings: center, left, right. When censing individuals, the number of swings they receive depends upon their orders and function in the mass. Bishop gets three doubles, celebrant gets three doubles (unless a bishop is present, then only two), etc.

      Hello speaks3703. Yes, we do need to update this video to conform with tradition better. The MC/deacon shouldn't place the chalice on the corporal because the priest-celebrant enjoys the right of placing at the Barukah. To place the chalice inappropriately removes this right.

    • @jonathangeorge9991
      @jonathangeorge9991 Před 5 lety

      That case is acceptable, but it doesn't meet the priest's aim. When the chalice is prematurely placed on the corporal, he now has to move the chalice from the corporal to the edge of the altar (as seen in the video), then replace it after the blessing of the gifts. The best case is to simply place the chalice next to the corporal or in front of the deacon, then allow the celebrant to place it on the corporal. This achieves both aims of avoiding presumption and creating efficiency of movement.

I do not know if there are rubrics in the Ordinary Form, but in the Extraordinary form, when people are incensed, the priest gets 3 double swings, while deacons get 2 double swings, and the people get three single swings.
