9 Weird Dog Behaviors Explained

- In this video, we will talk about 9 strange things dogs do and explain the meaning behind them.
Why dogs sniff before they poop
For dogs, pooping and peeing are effective methods of communication. Dogs mark their territory by eliminating waste and your dog’s chosen potty spot sends other dogs a message about where they’ve been and what they’ve been doing. It can also inform other dogs if there is an incoming threat.
Why dogs dig their bed or floor
A dog’s wild ancestors scratched at piles of leaves, dirt and pine needles to create a comfortable mound of bedding to rest. Many domesticated dogs still retain this behavior; By scratching or digging the floor or their bed, your pup may actually be trying to create a snug nest to sleep.
Bed-scratching is also a territorial behavior. Dogs have glands in their paws that leave a distinctive scent on bedding or other objects they scratch.
bed-scratching is also part of canine maternal instinct. If your female dog is getting ready to have her puppies, her bed-scratching behavior will suddenly increase. She’s making a nest for the arrival of her new pups to keep them warm and safe.
Why dogs carry stick on walks
Dogs like to carry sticks on walks and back home due to their instinctual desire to retrieve things.
As hunting animals, dogs were traditionally bred to ‘retrieve’ their catch and deliver them to their owner.
Dogs also like sticks because sticks feel like bones to a dog, and chewing them is satisfying.
Why dogs pee when excited or submissive
Many dog owners mistake submissive and excitement urination as a house-training problem when they are actually involuntary behavioral issues.
During times of high excitement, your puppy may dribble or squirt small amounts of urine.
Dogs also urinate in an attempt to communicate a submissive status to a person or animal.
Likewise, if your dog is scared, shocked, suspicious, or anxious about their surroundings or the individuals around, they may urinate in response to convey that they are not a threat
Why dogs lick paws
Dogs typically lick their paws as a part of self-grooming.
But if your dog licks their paws too much, or begins licking suddenly and only on one paw, inspect the tops and bottoms of the feet, the nail beds and toenails. Look for foreign objects, bruises, cuts, swelling, bleeding, redness, crusting, scabs, broken nails. Your dog may have irritated their paw by stepping on something sharp, walking on a hot sidewalk.
Excessive paw-licking could also due to food allergies or parasite infections.
Why dogs sigh
Dogs may sigh to signal contentment after a rewarding action. Like when they have had their playtime, or when they’ve eaten their favorite meal.
Dogs also sigh to signal the exhaustion of their efforts when they are disappointed. Like when they’ve begged for food throughout dinnertime without a payoff.
Why dogs eat poop
When a mother gives birth to her puppies, a mother will eat the puppy’s feces to keep their new home clean.
Eating fecal droppings is also a way of obtaining key nutrients.
While we may view poop as dangerous, it’s not as scary as we think. Healthy poop often contains harmless bacteria, water, and some undigested food. Some dogs find horse manure and goose droppings particularly appealing. This is because the manure of herbivores is full of enzymes and partially digested protein, which can be beneficial for a dog’s digestive system.
If your dog is eating poop, there might be some nutrients missing from their diet. Sometimes switching to a healthier dog food diet is the best way to fix a stool eating problem.
Some dogs may also start to eat their own poop because of environmental stress or anxiety.
Why dogs run away
Dogs may run away because they love nothing more than being active, sniffing around and exploring.
Dogs also run in an attempt to answer nature’s call, like searching for a mate or chase a prey.
Of course, many dogs are spooked by sudden loud noises like fireworks, thunderstorms and they run away to get away to protect themselves.
Why dogs throw up
A dog may throw up simply because he’s eaten something disagreeable or gobbled down too much food, too fast. Dogs may also throw up because of food allergies, a sudden change in their diet, ingestion of too much fatty or buttery food, or even motion sickness due to riding in a car.
But vomiting can also indicate something far more serious. Your dog may have swallowed a toxic substance, or may be suffering from a condition that requires immediate medical attention.
Frequent or chronic vomiting can be a sign of a more serious condition. If your dog’s vomiting is not an isolated incident, a vet visit is necessary.
Why dogs shake their toys
Dogs’ wild ancestors, wolves, would grab a prey in their mouth and shake aggressively from side-to-side until it was dead.
When your dog shakes their toy, they mimic the action wolves use to kill small prey. But make no mistake! This doesn’t mean your pup is aggressive! - Jak na to + styl

that kind of thing really puts life in perspective. Do that thing you want, right now, because you'll never know when another opportunity will arise.
I feel bad for you, I think about it too sometimes, maybe tell you a little story to cheer u up,
Im 76, 4 years ago a little dog, Benji type of dog adopted me, actually I didnt want a dog, but she jumped right into my Dune Buggy and said lets go, so the vet said shes around 9 month old, so when people ask how old the dog is, I always say we are having a race who finishes first,
Life is life, and you just hang in there,
"Dogs in a pooping position are vulnerable"
Well we have something in common
My wife was vulnerable when i caught her on the pee pad.
Thats why I always take an M4A1 to the bathroom
My dog got mad at me Friday night when I got drunk and went pee pee on his pad
@@gilpima6599 ah i never thought of that solution
Actually, during a training exercise in Germany, I had my back against a tree, dropping a bomb when the opposing force attacked. While holding the position I was unable to change, I picked up my rifle, fired blanks and using MILES gear scored a hit. Most of all, the linear assault parted ways to my flanks like I was Moses parting the red sea and a couple of them starting laughing so hard they were combat ineffective. Just goes to show how a single motivated soldier and help break up a company sized assault. I should have gotten some time of award.
The failure to make the poop facts #2 was a tragic oversight. Also, dogs tend to look at their owners when they're pooping to communicate that they want you to look out for them while they're most vulnerable. That's also why dogs often stand watch by the bathroom while their owners are preoccupied
Good to know.
I just commented on that 😆
Great to know.

Really? Source material, please.
my pup adds the vicious growl to his toy shaking. I think he wants the birds and squirrels that taunt him to know he's going easy on them, lol

Lmao I’ve always wondered why my dog only poops in my neighbors yard where there’s tons of dog poop, he’s just talking to the homies 😂
Your neighbours yard is literally twitter.... full of shit
@@Tanrilhorn 👏
you rlly shouldn't let your dog poo in another person's yard..
@@channelchannelchannelyourself I don’t leave it there lol I pick it up and throw it in my own trash
@@channelchannelchannelyourself Where should dogs poop then? On the sidewalk? The grass is more comfortable on paws compared to the hard sidewalk so going in the grass will be the first choice for any pup. Plus owners can't really control where their dog is pooping while on walks. As long as dog owners are responsible and pick it up then there shouldn't be any issues.
No idea why this popped up on my CZcams list but I'm glad it did. Thanks for the video.
@Dzhay Dzhee lol

I thought the exact same thing 😂
More like it pooped up

My dog who was a female used to poop only in the bushes...she would look around and poop when no one's watching....Such a civilised dog she was
My current dog also do it and have been since his first walk - often we get quit funny remarks when they see me or my wife "standing guard" by a hedge/bush with a dog-head sticking out.
But honest, it's just a matter of positive reinforcement and every dog will do it.
I hope you cleaned it up.
My dog only poops in the woods. I don't know who taught him that.
@@runedanmark Yes it was since her first walk itself!
I never potty trained her. She learned it from her mother whom I adopted when she was pregnant.

This was wonderful! We've had a golden retriever for a year now (from age 8 wks), so it was fantastic to see the reason for some of the behaviors we've witnessed. Thank you!
My beagle mable is almost 15 years old and is doing just fine. Love the video. I wanted to share that I love my dog! I wish she could meet all of the dogs in this video.

This is absolutely fascinating thanks for the video mate
These informations are very precious. I have been wondering why my dogs are doing these. Now my questions are answered.
If I am not feeling well, fritz would sit on me and won’t let me move until I get better, once I feel better he gets off. Lol
This is quite helpful!
Thank you! 💕🐾
This is so helpful, thanks for this video.
None of my dogs ate poop.. but then again i never caged them or locked them up. They have access to everything and every place in our house. And yes my bed is their bed. We are a pack
My dog did that once (that I saw) but I had no idea why it did that. I read that sometimes it's to replenish intestinal bacteria if they need it.
I wish I could trust my 6 year old Airedale to “share “ my space freely but he has been on a suicide mission from day one. He eats EVERYTHING. I mean in seconds, when it hits his mouth it is GONE! I have caught him with dish towels particularly down , my scarf 🧣, socks! Some of those I was not able to wrestle away and if it doesn’t show up in a few days it is a trip to the vet! When dislodging item ( in times I catch him)😂🤣 it looks like some sort of magician scarf trick! Anyway he is like a fuzzy Hoover . I do keep a clean house also but he can reach all the way on my kitchen counters and tables! Nothing is sacred!
@@tonyakeldsen1782 you should get one of those sprays that discourage that kind of behavior! Will probably save you a lot of money lol
@@MrXACR will look that up, thank you!
How sweet. My dogs can’t have access to own whole house because we have a rabbit, and two birds in the basement, and they can’t figure out hard wood stairs.
friend got a mini schnauzer, it shakes its stuffed animal hard then stares me down.....yup i'm next lmao
My schnauzer actually caught a squirrel once, shook it and sent it flying about 10 feet into the air.
When my puppy does that he's taunting me trying to get me to chase him for it.
They were breed

Thank you for giving info about it. Interesting.
I'm new to the dog world, this video is brilliant! Thank you.
8:34 My old dog would sometimes escape and go on adventure, there was even an article about him in my local newspaper once, about how he dug holes in a few gardens and "played around" with some female dogs, almost 5 km away from where I live, and nobody was able to catch him or lure him.
But he would always come back home in the evening.

When I took my late dog Lilly, to group puppy training, the trainer told us when our puppy was aggressive, to hold them down, put a slight weight on them, and loosely hold their neck with our hands until they sigh. This was supposed to mean they submit. Idk if that was legit but it worked very well and Lilly stopped her aggressive feet attacking behavior. She was a good girl.
yup my trainer has told me that too
The first 2 weeks of my puppy he was way out of control. I did this one night I lay on top and held him quiet for a few minutes. I did this maybe twice and he’s been the ideal pup ever since.

My chihuahua will fake sneeze to get your attention and will give a quick bark if she feels I'm not listening. Usually means she wants something especially treats.
My dog flaps his ears until I look 🤣
@Alpha Centauri Lol yes they do
My dog loves to tip over her empty water bowl, sometimes with a bark, then look at you or pretend she didn't do it. She has a few around the house so when she is bonding with another family member she doesn't have to go too far to replenish herself especially since she's a senior.
My dog sneezes when he’s mad or if I’m taking too long to do what I said (walk)

Re dogs and sticks.
It has always bewildered me that most dogs, normally an intelligent animal, can not figure out how to bring the retrieved stick back through an open gateway or doorway. I'm always yelling, " turn it vertically mate"!
Dogs also vomit to wash their insides. We had a dog who sometimes ate grass and immediately threw up. We were really confused why it did that but that's what our vet said, the dog is just kind of resetting it's stomache from time to time.

My dog is obsessed with blankets. The softer the better and he loves to burrow in them. He’s not a dog that is ever cold either, in fact he’d rather be out in the cold. He LOVES snow
Maybe he has a bit of A underground animal in him. Quite a few of them. Although there are some dogs that have been trained to hunt underground.

Dogs eyes, and their expressions, are absolutely fascinating! I am particularly fond of….. canine side eye 👀🐕🦺🐾🦴!
Logical and reasonable explanation ! Boom
I had a dog as a kid. But forgot what it was like. They literally come to check up on you. I moved back in with family who had a dog I was mostly a cat person. But if I didn't get up in the morning sometimes he would come and bang on my door to wake me up and is always exited to see me. Like 100% better than humans. Im usually pretty grumpy and hate hugs and being touched from ptsd but dogs and cats have helped me get over my fear of physical contact.

I wish you covered yawning. Other than when a dog is very tired, they yawn because they are stressed. Usually they are communicating that they are displeased with something, like not getting what they want or being told to do or not do something. It is probably the most important behaviour to observe as communication. Also some dogs mark territory with poop with the instinct to do so like urinating. On walks, my beagle Jasper always backs up against a tree, poll, or bush. He tries to go 8 to over 20 times in a 40 min walk. 3 on while traveling away from home, and the rest are the last 3rd of the way home. After 3 poops there is nothing left, but sometimes he eventually he forces diarrhea. It is an instinct that I am unable to rain out of him. FYI you can easily train a dog to close the door when they come in. My channel has a video of both my previous beagle and current, opening the partially closed door to come in and then closing it. Even when I am upstairs, I do not need to let Jasper in nor do I have to go close the door.
Out of the 20 or so dogs I have had since I was a kid, not one of them liked to carry a stick. As for excessive licking of the paws (especially if it is just one paw), it could also be an anxiety disorder or boredom

Our late dog never roamed far from home - but if we walked without a leash and got separated she'd just go home (Giving me a heart attack in the process). Sure she may have visited a neighbor on occasion or paid a visit to the small herd of cows on the field behind my parents house when she was outside in the yard alone.
No they are not my parents' cows, they belong to a family living a couple houses down the street. But the dog just loved sniffing around looking for mice, cats, birds etc. on the field. It was far more enticing to her than roaming the neighborhood.
One thing that I'd love to see covered (If it hasn't already been in another video) is why dogs LOVE to
case and be chased.
Our lil guy just loves this and it's a daily routine.
When he goes outside into our back yard to do his business or just to do the mandatory squirrel security check, if I go out with him, then it's GAME ON! When he's finished with his original purpose, he'll stop, look up at me, then pounce down (front end down, rear end up) tail wagging fast, indicated it's chase time.
First, he wants me to chase him as I do, he does the quick 180 degree turn and zooms right past or through me. LOL
Then I run away and he chases me, barking wildly (in a playful way).
Then, I'll say to him, "I'm gonna get you! I'M GONNA GET YOU" and this is where the fun starts.
He'll zoom back and forth, then come up to me, get up on his hind legs and start boxing me.
Of course, I box back, but he always wins. LOL
When he's done with all this, he'll zoom back to the house with me chasing behind him.
He keeps looking back to assure I'm chasing and then runs into his little door.
When inside the house, he'll look through the glass door and as I come to the door, he zooms off again, into the livingroom, where, it is customary that he gets treats and hugs. LOL
This lil guy is the cutest, most amazing doggie that we have ever had. He's not really a dog, actually.
He's a tiny, short person with a fur coat. I dare anyone to tell him differently. 👍👍😅😂🤣👍👍
My German Shepherd is the same way and we play the exact same way as you do with your pup!! ❤❤
I once tried to suddenly jumpscare my hon-sister's dog. She gave the biggest sigh as if she was sick of me visiting. But I love that she feels the need to stick around me when I visit though I'm not her owner.

My Kangal/Doberman mix too..
Mine used to love sticks but know when I throw him one he mainly wants to piss on it. He's less of a playful dog in his old age
Our black lab likes to playfully gnaw on our arms when we come home from work. I feel he is just saying I missed you and it’s sort of like a hug. Anyone else have a dog that does this? Never seen this before until we got this one. He is a really good dog.
CV59, our golden retriever loves to lick our hands, arms, and especially our ears and face (if available). He has always been a licker, though. That is how we picked him out from his litter at 5 wks old (we didn't bring him home until 8 wks - no worries).
Our yellow lab does exact same thing CV59. She mouths our forearm and holds it but never puts much pressure.
