They saw something in each other early on - and whatever bond they had initially grew, and grew even more after Freddie confided in her that he was bisexual - or gay -whichever you choose to call it..but in the end, he chose men over women. But, Mary was always there for him; and he was always there for her.

@ronald ferguson I resent your saying this. I'm a baby boomer, I am not homophobic, and I don't condemn Freddie's sexual preferences and finally I'm realistic. I have no illusions of their so-called 'romantic' relationship as time went on; but I DO believe they had a very special bond that evolved over time.
If you can't see the love that they still had for each other by looking - really looking at every single photo they share from 1984 to the time of his death - if you can't see their mutual admiration for each other - you are very blind.
Even people who have been closest to Freddie witnessed the bond I'm speaking, and I think it's you who can't come to terms with the kind of relationship they had throughout their lives. Mary was Freddie's rock - he felt safe with her. I'm not foolish enough to believe that there was any kind of physical relationship - but for me - the kind of love/bond they shared IS romantic - it's love at its highest level - but you probably haven't felt that for another person.
I don’t think people realise how much this lady was there for Freddie. They first met in 1969 and knew each other for 22 years. In his final moments before he passed Mary was there by his side holding his hands to ensure he wasn’t alone 🥲💙
She was his soul mate.....love is more than sex....she was his true love....true love has nothing to do with sex

She also was with him before he got famous, or rich. Plus, living in that house is literally a hell. Have you seen it? Expenses to mantain it apart, she got to transform it into a prison fortress because fans would trespass (there are videos on YT of fans filming inside the garden after crawling on the wall), write on the walls, try to spy and constantly film around the house. Now imagine how funny it must be to live like that just to keep a promise, with people always trying to invade your home or film inside. If she wanted only the money, she would've sold the house and went somewhere else.
Instead, she kept living in that house, forced to transform it into a fortress. Not really the easier choice, if all she wanted was just the money.

The fact they still wanted one another in their lives after Freddie came out says so much about the kind of relationship they had, right until the end.
What makes her so special is that homosexuality was much less accepted by society 30-40 years ago. She was heartbroken, and society would have wanted her to hate him. But she loved him so much as a human being, no matter what type of relationship they had.

Freddie left the house to her; it belonged to her and her children. Jim was HIV positive as was at least one other of the men living in the home. At that time it was a death sentence. Do you really think he wanted her to let three men, two of whom he expected would be very ill and probably die soon, remain with her and her family? She gave them 3 months.. more than most people would have given. Leave her alone. Freddie loved her and wanted to provide for her. It was her home to do with as she ... and I bet he... wanted. They chatted a little bit - and Brian was shy too but he thought she was so pretty that he got the nerve to ask her for a date. He said in an interview, that Mary was very guarded, and was careful who she got close to and the most they did was peck each other on the cheek with a kiss.
So when Freddie started asking about her (over & over again); Brian told him they were basically just good friends; and stepped aside so Freddie could ask her out!

I believe that Love of My Life was written for her as Freddie didn't want her to leave him and they continued to love each other unconditionally. Many people think that the song doesn't make sense if Freddie left Mary, but I think Mary was going to leave Freddie as she seemed happy that he could finally be free to be himself.

The song was written about his love of Mary and how he felt when their relationship ended...i.e. their courtship ended. She never stopped loving him though and he never stopped loving her.

What I admire so much about Mary is how she could put her own feelings aside to appreciate and love that Freddie could be one with himself. I wonder if I could be that good of a person when being dumped. My focus would be on my pain and it would most likely override seeing his pleasure about finding himself. Philip Halpenny please get your facts straight before you levy such harsh and false accusations which are inaccurate and for reasons unknown to me, still believed over 2 decades later by so many. Do your research, dear. Per Peter Freestone, the same PA you state in your comments as being kicked out with Hutton were not kicked out by Mary. In fact, it was Mr Beach, Freddie’s executor, who advised them all they had to vacate the main house and move to the Mews in order for the will to be probate and any of them to receive their inheritance. Instead of taking words from a book of a man who divulged many private things of a man who was extremely private or reading others perpetuated lies, do research yourself and you’ll find Mary had nothing to do with them having to leave GL. I know this fact because I was standing next to said, PA, Peter Freestone, when someone was telling him how horrible Mary was for “kicking them out” and all he did was politely say to her, “No, no, no, you’re wrong”, until she finally stopped speaking and he set the record straight about the probate. I had heard this was the reason but it was nice to hear it from Peter’s mouth directly, after all, he was there, we were not. I think he can be a trusted source of what really happened.

Came here after watching the movie. Their love story is heart breaking, they love each other so bad , yet they can not be with each other as lovers or partners. What a lovely woman she is and I assume Freddie knew that too, she was a godsend... to take my hat down to her, tbh I’d not know how’d I’ve reacted in her shoes... she’s justified the existence of true love in my view. Loving someone for what it is now and what will they become in the time ahead of us, experience life together, learning to solve problems, growing together and changing together. Not giving up on each other... live and let our loved ones live. Being part of it and sharing it... “in good and bad, in better and worse”
