There would be no Blade if Darkman had not come first. :D
Well, my favourite superhero project is Daredevil (mainly Season 3) which is also 18 rated and is brilliant
I mean, you mentioned it in the beginning. For me it is Todd McFarlane's Spawn, though i am referring to the Animated movie/limited series, not the live action one. And so if you want to check out spawn, do yourself a favour. Go for the animated one :D
Not a superhero movie, but another Snipes movie, Demolition Man is my favorite schlock.
My favorite Blade movie was the second one, it has the best easy kill after an entire one man vs an army fight scenes. My favorite Super Hero movie is a tie between Batman Year One, Batman Under the Red Hood and The Dark Knight.
It takes a lot of unabashed shlock to sell a line like "some motherfuckers are always trying to ice skate uphill." Bravo, Blade đ
That's one of my all time fav one-liner in modern cinema.
Great line.
The line,is very reminiscent of Harry Callahan's final classic riposte in 'Magnum Force' (1973) : 'A man got to know his limitations' ! đ
On the commentary track for the film, the director said he heard Wesley snipes say that on the phone during takes & had to add it. Whoâs flying about saying that ? What a wonderful movie đ
bruh i think a lot of ppl think he says "ice skate a BILL". lol up hill makes WAY more sense
I like to think Blade realized he'd forgot to cut Quinn's arm off after setting him on fire so he went to the hospital to take care of it. lmao
Love this idea.
Canon
Head Canon now
The moment at the end of the movie, Blade isn't asking Karen for a better serum to explode vampires but rather a better serum to control his bloodthirst since the one he has been using is not working as effectively anymore.
This. Glad someone else corrected this if Daniel misunderstood it.
Don't they also keep refining the blood serum? I remember Blade using an inhaled version in 3
"Some motherfuckers are always trying to ice-skate uphill"
that quote lives rent free in my head :P
I love the intro to Blade.
At first, it comes off as the intro to a horror film where Heatseeker is the character who only serves to be killed off at the beginning of the film to establish the threat of the monster. The guy we are introduced to finds himself having fun at a club until it starts showering blood. The vampires then show their fangs, and he finds he has been taken into the wolvesâ den, surrounded by vampires. You get that he's screwed. Then, he looks up at Blade and the tone completely changes. The other vampires look at Blade with fear as they back away.
The setup has now completely flipped. It turns out the monsters' monster has showed up with the vampires, not the guy introduced, being the unfortunate victims who get killed off at the beginning of the film. Blade then proceeds to show off the threat he is by mowing through the vampires. It goes from horror to action in a few minutes.
It is a prime example of successfully performing a subverted expectation scene.
I honestly think the art of schlock is just as important as 'high-minded' artsy cinema. There's something special about some really good schlock that can't be matched by anything else
My favorite Blade trivia fact is about when Quinn's actor broke his arm on set and went to the ER still in full burn victim makeup scaring the hell out of the nurses
Iâm SO HAPPY to see âBladeâ getting love here. đ€đ»đ€đ When this movie came out, there was nothing like it. Absolutely awesome. Aside from a couple corny fx shots, itâs just as fun to watch today as it was 25 years ago!
I remember when it came out, we tought that from now on, every movie is going to be this cool :D
Blade and The Matrix formed the basis of the 00s action movie style I think.
I am SO GLAD you covered this absolute masterpiece of a superhero film!! I noticed you skipped over the "what the f*ck" mouthing by Blade when Frost's two halves reconnect, which I feel deserves more recognition in general tbh. It's my favourite moment in the entire film, and the entire film is my favourite vampire film.
I love Blade, but I don't know that it's better than Near Dark for vampire antics. And maybe it's too much a product of its time to get love now, but I love The Lost Boys.
23:07 The idea đĄ behind EDTA was that it was intended to be an anticoagulant in humans. But, in vampire physiology it causes a violent explosion.
Blade trilogy was among my favourites since childhood đ
Stephen Dorff has that true blade connection. Not only is he an awesome antagonist, but he's also in True Detective S3 with Mahershala Ali, the next gen Blade
22:23 As someone who is pale enough to be a vampire, can confirm that SPF 50 is what I use to keep from bursting into flame in the sun
To be fair to Deacon Frost, he's named after his comic version who is a way more "Classic Dracula" vampire. Which is interesting, because he's not actually a classic vampire. He was a scientist that mistakenly turned himself into a vampire and because of it he gained unusual vampire abilities, but unlike Morbius he isn't a "science vampire" but a magical vampire just created through scientific means of experimenting with vampire blood.
I love they actually filmed an ending where Blade meets Morbius but then realized they didn't have the rights. You'd think they'd figure that out before actually filming it. You can still find it online.
The great thespian Udo Kier plays the Pure Blood leader. He has roles in all kinds of weird, freaky, wacky, kooky, abnormal and quirky horror movies of the last 50+ years. He was in a couple of Warholâs movies, Johnny Mnemonic, and Barb Wire to name a few.
36:41 Karen developed a cure. Thereâs a scene đŹ in the movie where she flips the bird to Frost because she cured herself.
Yep. During the conversation, she even tells Frost to go ahead and bite her, and she will just cure herself again.
I love Stephen Dorff's acting here because he ever so subtlety gives Frost a bit of humanity. When Karen mentions the cure, you can see a slight look of wonder on Frost's face as if he's thinking "could there actually be a cure to all this?"
I love when Karen got under his skin when she tells him he is a mistake, a virus, a sexually transmitted disease.
Savage!
I unapologetically love all three of the Blade movies. Yes please review the others!
I played the first and second blade movies so much when I was a teenager. Theyâre so good and goofy in a good way.
I can't express how perfect the timing of this video is because I just rewatched Blade last night on a whim.
Always great to see Blade getting some love. I definitely prefer Blade II but the first is still a classic. Snipesâ portrayal is iconic.
I watched this film for the first time with my housemates at uni with some drinks, sat on the floor of one of someone's bedroom. I honestly think that was the best viewing experience for this film (we actually watched all of them over a couple of nights)
This video is amazing. I saw Blade 3 times opening weekend (yeah, Iâm old) and seeing someone else express this much affection for it is awesome. Thanks so much Daniel! And please Blade 2 and 3 which are as widely divergent in quality as 2 sequels could be, while both still being pretty enjoyable.
i read this..... i saw blade 3.... me: oof the worst blade... times.....me: thank god.
When Blade orders Karen to "Make me a better serum," he's not talking about her vamp-asploding sauce. He wants her to improve the blood replacement serum that he has been using.
Great review but a few corrections
Karen was attempting to create a cure and the blue drug was a failed attempt. Just before Whistler and her were attacked Karen created a cure for those who were turned but not born. The cure Blade rejected at the end was for him specifically.
Blade's thirst comes up in all 3 movies. She does make him a better drug for his thirst. It comes up in 2.
I would like a review of 2 and 3. This review was a lot of fun.
Right. And that's what he means at the end as well: to make him a better serum for his thirst, because the old one is not working that well anymore.
Fun fact. Back when Blade was made, SPF 50 was a scifi tech level.
50+ ratings are possible only thanks to nanotechnology. It was the first commercial use of the tech. Maybe second? The other was a lining on the inside of ketchup bottles to make it slide out.
I love that he so flippantly killed his mother but spared that one guy whose kicks he respacted. Truly a man of principle.
Blade was the best superhero movie ever. Loved watching this as a kid.
Blade is definitely one of my favorite comic movies. I am surprised you didn't mention the shoulder dislocation scenes. Karen has her shoulder reset, little whimper. Blade has his shoulder reset, blood curdling scream.
I think the serum Blade wants Karen to improve is his blood substitute serum not the vampire-blood-balloon one.
I first saw Blade at a drive-end. It was the second of a double feature and I was young and kept falling asleep, but I remember the movie being so good we would keep going back for like two more weekends to watch it. Good times. Experience a drive-end if you have not people. Not sure they are still around.
One of my favorite superhero, hell, action flicks out there. The soundtrack is dope, mood, setting, and character are portrayed flawlessly.
I love Blade so much. Its one of my favorite vampire movies.
The blade trilogy remains in my top ten favorite superhero franchises, even with the third being a bit more comedy than anything. Fantastic
Love this
youre not my mom, i lick what i want
31:05 Those âbat skeletonsâ are the Spirits of the Twelve from the prophecy of Lamargra. The lighting is supposed be supernatural energy energizing the Vampiric spirits of the Pureblood Vampires so that they literally separates the spirits from their vampire hosts.
I interpretated the ice skating line as trying to rise above one's station such as ascending to god level. Excellent film, excellent breakdown
Yes more blade these movies donât get enough recognition
My favorite line is when blade throws his sword and Deacon goes "nice shot" lol
I always thought the ice skating line refrenced Frost's namesake đ 10/10 movie. Blade I and II and
The Mummy I and II were my fave from this era. That and The Mask of Zorro
Grew up watching Blade on VHS.
It's a classic hero/villain film.
He's not asking her to make a better "make vampires explode" serum. He's asking her to make a better "stop me from needing to drink blood" serum. That's why his bloodthirst never comes up again in the series.
Love hearing your take. We're around the same age and this movie has always held great nostalgia for me. I'd love to hear your take on 2 and 3 as well!
I love seeing that Blade is getting the love and recognition it deserves! Also love that you have a vampire sigil tattoo, is that Drake's (Dracula's)? đ
Holt crap Iâm old. I remember going to see this movie in a drive in with my parents back in the day. Itâs freaking awesome. The second one is even better. I highly recommend checking it out.
Can you please do more movie/ show reviews like this? It was both deep and funny. Well done.
My favourite comic book superhero! So glad to see you covering blade on the channel because Wesley Snipes absolutely killed the role đ€
Best opening scene EVER!
I did NOT think I needed a nearly 40-minute review of the movie "Blade" to start my day, but alas, I did. Thank you, sir. I eagerly await part 2.
"People die when they are killed" is one of the most memed lines in anime and on the internet in general. It sounds like the most useless nonsense to say, but in context it made perfect sense.
You had me at Blade!
Love it! Blade and The Crow were big teenage favourites of mine.
I think it's in the comics that Blade was self aware in the womb.
The Crow, Robocop, Demolition man. i liked these movies quite a bit as a little boy.
I enjoy this format a lot!!
Bladed let Queen live so he can follow his trail to Frost. He knows he is Frost minion and he will lead him to the big bad vampire.
It's like letting a drug dealer give you his source.
And at the end when they talk about the serum, they aren't talking about the vampire explosion weapon.
Karen tells him that she can cure vampirism (recent bites at least), if he takes the serum she develop he will lose his bloodthirst but also all other vampire habilities.
Bladed tells her that isn't good enough.
The soundtrack for Blade 1 and 2 remains in my playlists till this day.
Your added heatseeker's 'gaaaaaw's legimitely got funnier the longer the bit went on đđđ
Good to see Blade getting some love. Really took a nose dive by number three, but this one is still just a great ride from start to finish.
This was fun! Please do Blade 2 as well! I loved the first two and hated the third but feel free to do that one too lol.
My dude! I freaking love your videos on writing and world building. But this might be one of my favorites. You can see how much fun you're having. Awesome!
The early 00s shlock movies were seriously underappreciated for their time. Not only was Blade retrospectively a masterpiece, but so was Daredevil and monster movies like Van Helsing and the Underworld Series. Like the Mummy, they all kicked ass and were a great time despite their flaws. The genre of gritty badassery that didn't take itself too seriously is one that shaped me and I still hold on to my DVD collections to rewatch on a yearly basis.
I was raised on these movies and have rarely ever been able to find someone my age (24) who has actually seen them but they are definitely where my love for super campy/stylised high impact violence in movies comes from
You got the like from me when you said, "a concept we're all FAMILIAR with."
This was indeed a masterpiece and (If I'm not mistaken) saved Marvel from going bankrupt! I pray that the new version in the coming years does it not only Justice but gives some kind of homage to the original.
Blade is a classic. Blade II is also really great
Haven't seen this in a couple decades + , but it was awesome back in the day. Think i'll have to give it a rewatch.
Hi Daniel,
Blade is definitely a rollicking romp! For another Wesley Snipes "Popcorn Schlock" flick, you definitely need to check out "Demolition Man"
Iâm so depressed today and your uploads make my day. Thanks Daniel
1. Blade uses people and vampires as bait which is why he lets Quin live. 2. Karen made herself a cure. part of her process was making the bloat dart compound. 3. at the end blade is implying that he wants her to make him a better serum to cure his hunger. 4. you'll meet people later on that were cured by Karen's cure. 5. Blade had Swagger, the sauce, and the Rizz that set him apart. T'challa had it in Civil war and then they slightly drew it back for Black Panther. because it was less about his revenge and more about killmongers. damn that rule of cool
If you look closely, when La Magra/Frost is getting all swole from the EDTA injections...blink and you miss it but yeah, those all get swole too. Nice detail.
Because of the large amounts of wind, I thought it took place in Chicago. I would have never guessed New Orleans. Regardless, I will always be a die hard Blade fan. Wesley Snipes chef's kiss. I adored all 3 films, corniness and all. I will be interested to see what they do bringing it back. They have a tall bill to fill as far as I am concerned. I would love to see the Blade reboot open the door for Midnight Son's and those affiliated.
The Quinn/Blade conflict is epic, just sayin'. And no one can put Whistler in a corner.
The interesting thing about Deacon Frost having the most 90s name ever, he was created in the 70s.
Ok I never noticed the body at the factory, thatâs awesome.
Still love the movie, some of the effects obviously donât hold up but the acting is pretty solid throughout. The action is fun and the soundtrack is fucking awesome with a awesome mix of hip hop and electric music which gets even better to the sequel where they just straight up made collaborations/features.
Using Heatseeker's "AaaAAHh" noise to bleep swear words is an A1 bit, just *chef's kiss*
If you havenât watched it yet, please check out The Crow with the late Brandon Lee. This one slaps in the same vane as Blade. I personally like the crow better, but still really like the first Blade.
Oh man, as the age range that was also at the prime age for this era. You're damn right this and SPAWN are masterpieces of their intended genre.
This was my FAVORITE movie as a kid. I saw it when I was 10 and we had it on VHS. Still love this movie it definitely holds up
I watch this every so-many years. It's just great.
The opening vampire massacre is like if the âNo Russianâ mission in CoD was the tutorial
Daniel, he doesn't want the explodey serum perfected, he wants the can't-believe-it's-not-blood serum perfected. so he can go back down to a workable dose
Fantastic series, I binge it every other year! My Chrome feed is still full of Ryan's-abs workout routines.
Ah, 1998 Blade, such a masterpiece đ€
Loved blade, it came out in the Uk like 5 days after my 18th birthday, and was rated 18 here, so I my first use of my new powers bestowed upon me by my 18th level up was to go see this movie, alone. Like a dork. And I loved it đ
I did not see this coming! A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one! The first Blade movie is a classic for me. It's not great by any means, but does it's own thing so right I just notice myself watching this movie every time it comes from tv!
I think the line 'Some Motherfuckers are always trying to ice skate uphill' refers to how far Deacon is willing to go for power. Being immortal and living like a king just isn't good enough for some people, they have to be like Gods too!
I love that you gave this film attention, loved your critique as well. Please do more of these! They're fangtastic.
Sharp review my man! Really a cut above the rest!
I was expecting a cutting remark
*sage nod* I expect this kind of rapier wit in Daniel's comments.
@@iainyoung8057 Good point, but it's a double-edged sword because they're usually just edgy.
cannot believe it took me 30 years to watch this masterpiece.
I love your videos like this since it reminds me of the episode of Parks and Recreation where Andy is trying to explain and reenact movies haha
I haven't seen this movie before but it seems so ridiculously great that I must watch it
Blade is one of my favourite movies! So glad you decided to talk about it because a lot of people don't know it. Wesley Snipes as Blade is the definition of cool. The blood rave is iconic.
Blade 2 is my favorite of the trilogy, merely for the fact that it was the first one I'd seen, but also because it has Luke Goss, Ron Pearlman, Norman Reedus, and Tony Curran in it. It was also the first film I'd seen directed by Guillermo del Toro. The whole trilogy is a massive guilty pleasure, for me. It was super easy to get into it, having grown up on things like Tim Burton's Batman and The Crow. I was very much into darker toned media as a preteen/teen.
Funny that you bring up the point about how they ought to be concerned about a source of food once their primary source goes extinct, the movie Daybreakers focuses on this exact topic.
Some Mister Falcon's are always trying to ice-skate uphill!
great review!
Did you just see this for the first time!! Hell yeah, the sound track was FIRE too! Really hope they dont shit the bed with the new Disney series, cuz I LOVE BLADE!! That movie is SO BAD ASS! Loved that you mentioned Matrix, cause Blade, Fight Club & Matrix all came out within a year of each other and these movies left a huge imprint on my 17 year old head canon for what movies should be like, especially matrix and fight club. Not to mention the latter 2 totally blew my mind and matrix becoming a blue print for action cinematography, and Fight club to some degree fot psychological thrillers. Seriously cant think of any other movies that have exploded my brains the way those movies did...maybe Memento...
this nevver showed up on my notification wtf. love me some vampires and the blade series is a vivid childhood memory.
Love the movie reviews! Hope you make more, especially for classics!
I dressed up as him for Halloween once when I was a kid. He has always been one of my favourite superheroes, especially when the vampire dies it looks epic, but really great video Goblin
Didnât expect a blade review for my post work watch this evening, thank you kind sir.
