      These timestamps 🪨 rock!
Talking about rocks... Princey, I empathize! My Rottie helper dog, Teddy will be turning 3 in May. If he wouldn't've been able to...erm...🚀by himself, I swear I'd be so sad for him...all pent up. 😬
      {I still need to do more screening for genetic disease traits & x-ray his hips & elbows to check if OFA Good or Excellent. Any lower, and I won't breed him.}
FYI, I really appreciate your care for your Princey boy's well-being, Joel!
My dog is SO intense, however, I honestly don't think it would be a good idea for him to have even one breeding ... I don't know if he would be able to focus as well on his work with me... It's a possibility it could become his new obsession, at which point I'd need to think deeply about whether or not to leave him intact.
I just want to do what's best for his ultimate happiness.
I'm guessing every Helper dog is different, so any decision would be case by case.
      All the very best!

I’m the guy who documented and started the ball rolling that took down the Waimanalo Puppy Mill on Oahu. I’ve seen war zones and natural disasters…the suffering by those dogs was the worse thing I have ever experienced and am still trying to digest all these years later. Having said this, after a year in Mexico, I can say with confidence, the Thai Street (soi) dogs, over here in SE Asia, are some of the most resilient pups on the planet. So lucky to have these roll models by our sides. Mucho mahalo for sharing such valuable insights and tools‼️🤙🏼

Former Girl Scout here. In my opinion and experience, you hit the nail on the head. While all the Boy Scouts in my area were learning to make fires, build shelters, tie knots, and do community service, my troop was selling cookies, making friendship bracelets, and get this: taking manners classes. I lost my faith in the organization early on and quit as soon as my parents would let me. Not saying this was everyone’s experience, but I’ve always been bitter I didn’t get to learn the same skills as Boy Scouts did.

I can relate, when I was deployed to the middle east I was seriously less stressed out because I was just trying to survive. No paying bills, relationship stuff extra. My dog, a GSD /chow mix (not the one you met , Joel) was a Mexican street dog before he was rescued. He was featured on “The Dodo” and I was smitten. They actually updated his video to include me for his post-adoption follow up.
He had to be rehabbed for about a year and a half for anxiety and still has residual issues . He’s my special boy that needs a little extra care but he’s a very good boy. It took a lot of efforts by the rescuers to get him to a place where he could be around people and not want to react and bite . I have to use “do not pet” leashes and things with him as he still will not strangers pet him but he’s very affectionate and sweet and loves to be loved on and I’m more than happy to give that to him:)

when i was in girl scouts not only did we sell cookies but we also had to work towards badges, go camping, learn basic life skills like how to cook and make a fire, we also did arts and crafts, and we had organized trips to caves, museums, factories, and even themeparks. we also had to make food from around the world. we also had to complete other requirements for earning your gold wings and one of them included robotics. what i got out of it was that just because i am a girl doesnt mean that i cant do non typical girl things. a huge issue is that girl scouts are not taken as serious as boy scouts are.

IME these activities really empowered girls, especially those whose parents didn't have the ability to enroll them in sports, music, or other activities beyond their financial means.

Where I live in San Miguel de Allende, there's a rescue that brings dogs to Canada and the US. Sadly, there are not enough fosters in the area to care for them before they can get them to their new homes. 24 dogs, many that were adoptable, were euthanized by the animal control this past week because there weren't foster homes to care for them. We just rescued a puppy a month ago that would have died if not from being put down, from the parvo that got all 14 puppies that were there at the time. He came down with parvo after we had already brought him home. We were able to get him care, and he survived. There aren't many street dogs in this city - Either their adopted or they no longer live.

We live in Mexico in the country and we are going to have to figure something out because we have had to deal with so many street dogs showing up here at all ages and all levels of health. We just had a little girl show up a few days ago who was on death's door. She is the fourth street dog we have taken in, and we have taken care of many others and rehoused them, the dogs are not going to stop coming so we are going to have to figure something out. They truly are the sweetest dogs though. It is like they are grateful for the help. Ironically, while Mexican street dogs were showing up here, our Doberman was stolen which was very upsetting.

Regarding rescue dogs - Some shelters will let you "foster" a dog for a few days or weeks so that you can see if the dog is compatible with you and your lifestyle. If you want to rescue a dog I suggest doing that, specially if you have other dogs to make sure they can get along.

I did GS for a few years, my mom was the leader for my troop. We did a tour of historical sites here that were on the Underground Railroad. We volunteered at Nursing Homes to play board games or read to or do crafts with people that didn't have family visiting. We went on nature walks with a guy who showed us all the plants and birds in the area. We raised butterflies from caterpillars and learned about that. There was a camp during the summer where we did canoeing, archery, built fires, pitched tents and did our own cooking (with supervision.) So a lot of troop activities, then there's a book with tons of different badges you can earn for doing various things like sports, learning things, reading, volunteering in the community. Some troops do a lot, some suck.

We have been fostering dogs from TJ for about 10 months or so. Two of them had been hit by cars, one lost an eye and the other lost the use of his left leg but can run and jump like a dog possessed. The first couple of months were very challenging but over time with lots of walks, some training and play, they turn out to be very good dogs. Two have been adopted but Stevie, the dog with the leg issue has been with me for six months with no prospects in sight. That's ok though, it's very satisfying to know these injured dogs have a much better life than what they had in TJ.

They have scouts come from all over the world. Girl scouts probably have similar opportunities. They learn leadership self confidence independence outside their families. They earn badges that help them explore different avenues they may proceed towards further secondary education more in depth than school. They learn citizenship to be community minded. Scouts broadens their exposure to the world outside family and school.

Almost all Mexican dogs are permitted to live just like outdoor cats in North America. They tend to stay within a block or 2 of home, but nothing is stopping them from getting together with their friends for a day at the beach. Most do have loving homes. Generally they are not allowed inside, but the homes usually have some sort of a courtyard. It is the roof dogs and fighting dogs that need to be rescued, not the street dogs.

It depends on the troop leaders. I remember as a kid when my mom took us to a mechanic and we learned how to change tires and they made an air bag explode for us. I'm sure there was more but that's all that stands out 15+ years later. 😅 She says selling cookies teaches money management. But I think GS definitely has less to offer now than they used to. Plus, I think a lot of parents just use it as a way for a cheap babysitter now and don't contribute.

WAS stopped again, for my mom.. finished finally----🎉 awww, joel, i loved the---> "i love babies now", not just the waiting for them to grow up, part... i have sons that all had gone through the baby stage, with their kids, into the growth stages, and the changes in learning about each stage had an impact, though they may not be aware of it (us mom's, see this, though)...they were in awe of them, and then: in what they were capable of❤... learning all the stages, causes you to appreciate baby's first new life, deeper, if you open yourself up for each new moment--- which you did and have, over the years😊... say, you made me think of puppyhood and pups becoming adults...and--us training our kids for THEIR adult years--- PERHAPS with a home, perhaps with babies... also--- you both did a very nice "finishing" to the video, with the quiet time... and--- as to the camera, say, no, you didn't look old, but, i did think you looked a bit tired (i was a bit worried, but you sounded great!) ... now, i realized it IS the camera...*i am 70----🙃 i think we can appreciate GOOD lighting in our elder years, hee hee.. THAT is what you noticed here, but, you still looked good🎖... god bless, to you and the family ❤🙏

I think the lessons that both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts want to convey is a sense of community spirit ..

    Hi Joel,
I am interested in doing your Beckman Coaching Program.
However, since I'm only 15 years old, I don't have an email, and am unable to use someone else's email address.
I have quite a lot of experience with aggressive and fearful dogs. I take on the dogs that know one else will, or can't. But I'm always looking to be a better dog trainer.
Is there anyway I could do it eg. logging into a website, ie anyway that's not through zoom sessions or email? If not, I totally understand, but if you could, that would be awesome.
    Thanks

Congratulations on 500K subscribers! We did have a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel..she was the sweetest girl, never met a person or dog that she did not like. The breed does tend to have heart issues and ours passed at 10 yrs old. Throughout the years we have a had a few different breeds, Rough Collie, Labrador, Australian Shepherd, Sheltie and a Chow Chow. While our Cavalier was pretty sweet, if I had to take say a crawling baby and leave the baby alone with one of the dogs that I have had believe it or not, hands down it would have been the Chow. We got her before our kids came along, and when they did come along she was like Mom #2, always watchful, always good with the kids. Now of course I would never leave a baby alone with any dog...but our Chow just had such a good temperament. We had one incident where I had taken her to Petsmart with me, she was sitting by my side while I was looking at fish. All of a sudden a young boy got away from his parents and basically threw himself at my dog...giving her a "bear hug" She was so good, just looked up at me surprised. Needless to say I gave the boy a little lecture about that you can't do that to a dog that you don't know. My husband wanted another Chow after she passed, but by then I had heard so many bad stories about the breed that I didn't want to take the chance. She was a fantastic dog, she was everything you would ever want in a dog. I'm thinking that maybe the street dogs don't have some of the neurotic tendencies is that they are exposed to a lot of different things...people, noises, cars, bikes, other dogs ect. while I think sometimes we don't expose our dogs early enough to some of these things...

stray dogs are from long bloodline of strays where genetically they have become hardwired to constantly look for food, and also be smart enough to figure out how to get it (and this goes as far as begging people for food, using crosswalks, being able to observe something and learn behaviour from that). If they do not have the smarts, their genetic bloodline comes to an end and that line of strays no longer exist. You can't just dump any dog in the wild and expect it to be able to survive, it hasn't got the family history of being a wild survivor. When you rescue a stray dog from a long history of strays, even as a puppy, they will always have those stray dog instincts

I think a good topic would be not how to pick a rescue but how to pick a puppy. Cesar has his own opinion on how to do this in one of his books. Im interested to hear yours! He said something to the effect of choosing the most shy dog because the one that comes to you is often too confident and dominant and will be hard to train because hes a front of the pack dog. That shy dog will often be more of a follower middle of the pack or back of the pack dog

THANK YOU for the girl scout thing. I got into an argument with an American on it because to me, as a Eurepean, it seemed like such a weird, uncanny concept to force your girls to go from door into awkward situations with grumpy grown adults just for money that they don't even get to keep. It's just exploited child labour? If you want to raise money, make waffles at a school festival or do a stage play, or something interactive like that, that was my opinion. I was then called slurs, being told I'd probably be the grumpy adult at the front door, and for some reason I was also racist(?). Taught me a valuable lesson: NEVER try to have a normal discussion with an American. So yea, I agree with Eric here, be careful Joel. Ze Americans will for yuu.

The strength of the family unit here (vs the disrespect that it receives in the US) is something that supports a vibrant and friendly culture. That being said, it is not perfect and has its downsides, but I would choose living here any day of the week over the US.

I lived in small Mexico towns close to where you were for 2 years and rescued an adult street dog and brought him back with me to UK. I have to disagree with you - yes, the dogs roam around free but 99% of them will get sick, get hit by a car, or even worse get chained in heat by a local to a tree etc etc... yes, dogs here and US develop anxiety as they are almost too protected from the real world since they are puppies - I still have to say nothing is worse or more heartbreaking than witnessing dogs' hard lives out in Mexico.

Love the podcast! I have a question for you. I go to my local dog park pretty often (I know it’s a risk, but no incidents yet), and one thing I see frequently is parents bringing their young kids with them. I’ve seen toddlers wander into the middle of a bunch of strange dogs, and I’m always thinking, “if a fight breaks out, this kid is not going to survive.” Do you think parents should bring their kids to dog parks? And at what age?

Girl Scout cookies are only available for a short time once a year and are the biggest fundraiser for the troops. The girls learn to interact with people when selling their cookies and hopefully gain some confidence in themselves. The money from the sales help the troops do activities such as camping, hiking, field trips to various museums and other cultural experiences, crafts, etc. Girl Scout leaders get training and resources from the Girl Scout Council to help with troop activities. Each troop is different with regard to the range of activities but the purpose is to enrich and empower girls with varied experiences as they progress, with skills that can help them in life.
