I feel as though they are pretty similar. It usually depends on the specific color as some could vary.

Did you use a regular pencil to start the drawing?
And use the watercolor to draw the basic tones?

I use a charcoal pencil. Sometimes I do a quick wash with a single color over the drawing just to tone the paper but its not necessary.
