I have a small trick to help overcome that initial bump a lot of us experience when overcoming complacency. I call it "No Option." When you find it hard to do that thing you want or need to do, imagine a worst case scenario of you not doing that thing. Once you have the worst case scenario, tell yourself that "this is not an option" and immediately do it. I've been doing it for a couple of months now and it has been a lot easier to get things done. Give it a try!
I love all this advice but what I love even more is that you started out acknowledging that some people will have different barriers/obstacles to action and that's okay! So much "live your best life" advice is given in the tone of "all those things stopping you are just excuses!!" Which is so tone-deaf to anyone with differing life circumstances that it just sours the whole concept. I like how you said "there's nothing wrong with you" because little things like that really do make the difference.
SAME! I totally have ADHD too and pretty sure Struth does also hehe. We need that motivation like pain to get things done to get that dopamine to our brains. I relate so hard to all his videos!
Me too!! I am constantly looking up ways to “hack” my ADHD mindset… but this was the only thing that has truly made sense to me! I wish you all the best luck on your new goals ❤️❤️
The fact that you make the disclaimer about your capacity and that we might not all be able to do this is so self-aware and just shows how much you understand how human beings work. Thank you so much for your content.
I actually avoided watching this video for ages because I KNEW it would be about me and I didn't want to deal... It wasn't as bad as I thought. It was helpful. Thank you.
Really good steps to overcome complacency. Sometimes you just need to take small steps. I decided to sell my art online and dedicated a few days to setting up my online store. It's taken my way longer than I expected to list everything but love how it's turned out. I also started a CZcams channel to motivate me to make more art.
Having watched (and hugely enjoyed) many of your videos it seems you are almost always addressing ADHD without ever mentioning it. At first I was wondering why, but I now see that by not using medical terms you are giving a chance for everyone with related or overlapping issues (anxiety, procrastination, self-sabotage...) an equal chance at receiving the message fully regardless of their condition. Props to you.
I’m terrified of regret, and I’ve found that imagined deathbed regrets are so helpful in getting me to get crackin on being confident, taking leaps, and truly expressing my wants and desires
It was interesting doing the thought experiment while listening to you. I have a chronic illness and I found that my pain actually lessened, because I can literally Not Do It. And I am already taking the steps - they just happen to be tiny. Turns out I'm not really complacent about many things at all, I constantly strive to do it all, big and small, I just have to practice a lot of acceptance over the fact that I often Can't. But it did give me perspective on some unnecessary fears holding me back, which I think this really helped me let go of. Thank you for that! 😊
I really appreciate your disclaimer. I love your attitude in general. It's healing and constructive compared to all of the toxic positivity I feel bombarded by. I was homeless a few years ago after escaping domestic violence and I'll never see anything about "potential" the same again. I don't feel judged when I watch your videos, just inspired. Thank you
Well done brother, at 45 I STILL suffer from complacency, however, there is another side of being comfortable. It is not always so bad. Took my wife 10 YEARS to get married after we got engaged :) You're all good
After having a wedding i can say it’s overrated! A year of planning for a few hours that go by way too fast! That being said try to make the planning part fun and memorable!
The Cup List is similar to the Eisenhower decision matrix. If you don't make a plan for non urgent but important items, they can become urgent and important. Or, if you don't do them, stuff blows up. Yes, tackle urgent and important things. But you have to actually plan and do the important but non urgent stuff. Your channel is great! Thank you!
after finding this channel, I've realized I've led a long path of doing what I thought I should be doing and making people "proud" instead of going for the path I truly desired. This video has helped in giving me the motivation to stop being complacent in my life and actually move towards whats fulfilling for me, not what makes me comfortable. thanks
Loved this video. Thanks for giving actionable steps. Didn't feel like I was "advised". This is what I would like productivity videos to be like. Hope all your dreams come true for real!
Currently binging all of your videos in a “time to get most of my sh*t together before I’m 30 so I can thank myself” spiral. Maybe I’ll meander back to this video in 5 years for an update lol - good stuff man.
I just noticed how homey your videos feel, a lot of youtubers have them sitting in their room which is still pretty intimate and has a similar effect, but here it looks like a place where you would sit and talk with a person, coupled with your personality and style, makes a very pleasant viewing experience.
okay but this channel is something else entirely. i can't stop watching, taking notes, laughing and crying all at the same time bc of how relatable and kind and inspiring you are. you're a genius, man.. thanks so much
I needed this! I’ve recently resigned from a job I’ve been at for 11 years, it was definitely the easy road but I feel like it would be a hard and boring life if I stayed. This has inspired me to stop being complacent about more things in my life. So thanks for sharing :)
Your videos genuinely make me so happy. You have such an impact on people, I really hope you never stop being you and never stop uploading Thank you for such awesome videos
i'm going through a rough patch for a couple of years and have never given up on myself, until april when i got quite sick and my happy balance fell to hell. So honestly i've been slacking off even when circumstances were a bit stable. Thank you for sharing your learnings, i'm working to implement them gradually and successfully. 💛
As a girl named Jessi who is definitely living in her cave of comfort: Thank you :D I only found your channel a week or so ago when Sydney went into lockdown again, but your advice is already helping me get my shit together mentally. Next step: crawling toward the light of that rugged wilderness, and sprinting 20 miles to my new cave :D Cheers~~
Everything in life is hard, finding your soulmate and working on that relationship is hard, divorce is also hard, being alone is hard being successful is hard, not having what you've always wished for is hard. We just need to pick wisely and think long term
Your videos are so organized, it makes me wanna write all the topics and act like a student. And honestly, I've learnt so much so far. Seriously, this is now my youtube fav.
I really appreciate that little disclaimer, as someone with chronic health conditions and a shitty life, it can be disheartening to receive advice from someone with a more privileged perspective. "Just backpack around the world/ find a guru/ just hop in your private jet and spend a weekend in Paris with your imaginary boyfriend/ just hang out with the friends and family you don't have/ just get therapy even if you can't afford it/ just leave the house even though you're crippled with anxiety" Thanks Karen...
Your videos are genuinely such a source of inspiration bro, keep up the good work and do some different style videos (maybe a fred durst one because why not)
As someone who has always struggled with motivation I can confirm doing them feels better than not, 2 years ago I took on turning a truck into a home with all the comforts, I moved in 8 months ago and thought I was almost finished, ha, nope. I'm glad I didn't really grasp how much work it truly was going to be but even now I procrastinate but I always manage to get another job done that makes my life a little better, if you get overwhelmed, just stop and do something else for a while. Its not a sprint even though every boss every tells you it is.
Firstly, I'm so glad your mom's recovering. I hope she gets more strength than ever before. All the best for your wedding if it hasn't happened yet. Even more best for your marriage. I'm I'm a little late to the party. Thanks for your post. These talks are always so inspiring. I hope to stop doubting myself and get to doing things. The greatest challenge i face is self doubt. What i do know is once i start something i give it everything i have. You're cool people. Thanks a many bunch.
I made some steps today to start the process of developing new heirloom tomato varieties. This is likely an 8 year process or so, but I’ll be growing tomatoes anyway, might as well start this experiment. I see myself as a seed saver/protector and developer and new and wonderful heirloom tomato varieties.
Man you have no idea how much you help me. Whenever I'm stuck I'm like, yeah for sure there's a Struthless video for this. Plus you're exciting to watch and I laugh in the process. thank YOU
I love your disclaimer. A lot of people will talk about what people should do or what they did and how to do it, but generalise, and then as a result, if there are exceptions, like illness or children, or whatever, since it's not mentioned, we feel like we're the not normal one. I've wondered if I was using those things as an excuse to myself. Your disclaimer is a nice remainder that it's normal, not all things will apply to all people, and it's just nice to hear, you know.
@@krisellee2606 Hahah true. It was 1am when I was aimlessly browsing youtube instead of sleeping. So the starting minutes of this kicked my butt into realizing I was stupid and should sleep.
When we have an injury to heal from if we let our need for comfort control us while feeling complacent then it can make our healing time so much longer there is a danger of giving up. What a wonderful idea to include your mom in wedding plans! I feel inspired when hearing about the good attitudes a lot of young people have towards the older generation too while feeling thankful my daughters and a girl friend to one of my sons who is a welder who is so encouraging of me to not feel complacent while only ever seeking comfort for myself while she instead could be feeling resentful when assuming that I am trying to compete her whenever I put on a less tasty dinner for them because I am not even going to try and compete with 2 good cooks instead of only me. She complimented me on being able to be well organized in a smaller kitchen. I feel so lucky.
I cant tell you how much your videos help me to organise my life. just finished high school and I don't know what to do with myself but watching your videos helps a lot.
Yooooooooooooooooo... "The cup list" sounds revolutionary. Because the bucket list would be the "ideal" life, but the cup list would be a BETTER life :O Like holy shit I am making one rn... tnx!
Oh man- my wedding got canceled because of the quarantine and I was relieved as well- looking to plan something very simple for the second go around especially considering the money we lost from planning the first one
The Cup List is highly relatable. We just moved into a new apartment so the tasks I'm being complacent about just tripled. I made my own Cup list (I'm calling it Offline Awesomeness) and tackling #1 right now. Time to put away these books! Thanks Struthless
I don’t want to speak too soon but this hit a good spot. I can be very complacent. But when you said “life is short and you want the experience” that’s a reason for me to take action sooner than later….
Aaahhh this video is SO GOOD!! I’ve been watching authors give “writing motivation” talks fruitlessly and I enthusiastically all week hoping to find the inspiration to get back to my novel, when this video was actually what I really needed. Thank you so much as always, Struthless-you are so clear-eyed and full of helpful tools for putting your good advice into action!
I love the visual representations they make everything that much easier to understand for me, I love your channel every video has inspired and related to me. I’ve always struggled to take action in my life and you’ve helped more than you know. I also love your vibe and lighthearted energy, you make the videos truly enjoyable to watch. Thank youuuu🥺🥰
I sort of stumbled upon this method through trial and error myself. What I find helps is actually scheduling things - not "I'll do this on Sunday" but instead I open my calendar and drop the to-do things into a definite time (remember to give tasks 3 times longer than you think it will take). When I get that notification pop up, it's a lot harder to swipe it away when it's already sitting there than thinking "yeah, I'll do it later today" and catching yourself 34 videos deep on youtube with your hand stuck in a Pringles tube. You have that hesitation from swiping it away because you know you'll be failing your past self who already made the time investment to write it out and schedule it.
i love this channel! recently found myself watching informative yet fun and entertaining vids from time to time whenever i start to feel lost and this channel always understands my feelings and guides me to a certain mindset that is helpful for me. thank you
The first video I watched from you is probably the one when you made a video instead of doing drugs. I’m so happy to see you thriving, you seem genuinely so happy and excited for what’s to come. This content is one of the best on youtube. As an artist I’m so lost at the moment if I picked the right career path and all of your self-help tricks have made such a difference for me comparing to all of the others. It’s super relatable. The pressure I feel is significantly smaller after I watch one of your videos and implement the actions you suggest. Journaling is so important, just putting your thoughts on a paper is half of it. I feel like I’m not so lost anymore and even thought I have such vague goals, I know that I will find my way and that everybody has their tempo. Wish you the best and thank you. You are doing something very meaningful and important! ❤️
dude you are brilliant. seriously every video you put out is so thoughtful and concrete and simple. thank you so much for everything you do, subscribing to your channel is one of the best decisions I've made in years
thank you for giving advice that relates to the average human experience instead of making every one of your viewers feel as if they're underperforming. It's crazy to me that up until this point i haven't found someone explain the step-by-step process of self improvement in a way that doesn't make me feel like i'm not trying hard enough, even when it feels like i'm doing everything i can.
That's probably the best advices you can hear on youtube ever. Thank you so much for your videos! The way you deliver and present such sour topics is amazing!
Literally have no idea why this channel randomly popped up in my feed, but for once I salute the algorithm. Love this channel and I’m a subscriber now!!
I don’t know whether you would find this fact boring or not (maybe you already know), but the videos you make help people far beyond English speaking countries. Big thanks from Russia. You really give me a lot of things to think through and helpful advices that came exactly on time of need Please have a nice day and all the best wishes with wedding! Sincerely, Eve
I don´t think I´ve ever seen anyone creating videos like you do. How you explain everything from your own experience, how you always break it down in specific points/parts/steps, how you always incorporate journaling and motivate us to do the same (cuz it really is on of the best tools seeing your thoughts/feelings in front of you on a piece of paper, and then analyzing them). I am just amazed by your videos. They lift me up, makes me feel motivated and most importatntly they make me feel not alone with these kind of problems. And the fact that with these 10 minutes you literally give us a toolkit for our brain, which is really useful I think. So yeah, basically thank you so so much for being here and sharing your life advices :)
mannn i really love the format of your videos, it always comes with how to actually concretely apply your advice and not just letting us do the work without a direction in mind. most times there are just advice floating around and we sometimes end up in an information overload bc we sometimes don't have a directive on how to apply it. Thanks a lot, i'm glad i discovered you at one of my lowest points in my life. Cheers :)

When you find it hard to do that thing you want or need to do, imagine a worst case scenario of you not doing that thing. Once you have the worst case scenario, tell yourself that "this is not an option" and immediately do it. I've been doing it for a couple of months now and it has been a lot easier to get things done. Give it a try!
Honestly, If you wrote a self help book I’d live by it
He has, it's on preorder
@@lawrencewallace4462 What's it called and where can it be pre ordered from?
I love all this advice but what I love even more is that you started out acknowledging that some people will have different barriers/obstacles to action and that's okay! So much "live your best life" advice is given in the tone of "all those things stopping you are just excuses!!" Which is so tone-deaf to anyone with differing life circumstances that it just sours the whole concept. I like how you said "there's nothing wrong with you" because little things like that really do make the difference.
Ahah, as someone with ADHD I’m constantly looking for tutorials on life, this is in my top 3 and I’ve been seeking life tutorials for almost a decade!
czcams.com/video/n8FcUGrD0-s/video.html
yesss literally
I wish you all the best luck on your new goals ❤️❤️
umm, what does it feel to have an adhd?
I've been so complacent here lately that it's actually making me anxious. This video came at the right time.
This channel was an awful lot of help to me during quarantine being an artist and all
czcams.com/video/n8FcUGrD0-s/video.html
This is basically free therapy, thanks man.
Struthless: "I'm not your dad"
Thomas Frank: *shuffles legal papers menacingly*
You are like the older brother everbody needs.Honest and real people are rare these days.
I'm glad you're mom is doing well!
Took my wife 10 YEARS to get married after we got engaged :)
You're all good
Most relevant topic in today’s time.Appreciate your knowledge and techniques to tackle it.
After having a wedding i can say it’s overrated! A year of planning for a few hours that go by way too fast! That being said try to make the planning part fun and memorable!
I hear what you're saying, but after 10 years of being married I still think of those couple of hours of pure joy very often.
Your videos are so down to earth and helpful. Thank you so much 😊
his self-help videos are the only ones i can watch without feeling drained. truly a great guy doing great things.
Currently binging all of your videos in a “time to get most of my sh*t together before I’m 30 so I can thank myself” spiral. Maybe I’ll meander back to this video in 5 years for an update lol - good stuff man.
I just want to thank you for your videos; they seem to come up in my feed when I need them the most. You rock!
You have such an impact on people, I really hope you never stop being you and never stop uploading
Thank you for such awesome videos
How is this channel free. The amount of effort, information and value that goes into every single video!!!
The business book HAHAH
i'm going through a rough patch for a couple of years and have never given up on myself, until april when i got quite sick and my happy balance fell to hell.
Everything in life is hard, finding your soulmate and working on that relationship is hard, divorce is also hard, being alone is hard
being successful is hard, not having what you've always wished for is hard. We just need to pick wisely and think long term
Just wanna put it out there that your channel gives me hope around these bad times. It's a breath of fresh air watching your videos.
"Just backpack around the world/ find a guru/ just hop in your private jet and spend a weekend in Paris with your imaginary boyfriend/ just hang out with the friends and family you don't have/ just get therapy even if you can't afford it/ just leave the house even though you're crippled with anxiety"
Thanks Karen...
Your videos are genuinely such a source of inspiration bro, keep up the good work and do some different style videos (maybe a fred durst one because why not)
your disclaimers telling me the there is nothing wrong with me is so comforting bless you
As someone who has always struggled with motivation I can confirm doing them feels better than not, 2 years ago I took on turning a truck into a home with all the comforts, I moved in 8 months ago and thought I was almost finished, ha, nope. I'm glad I didn't really grasp how much work it truly was going to be but even now I procrastinate but I always manage to get another job done that makes my life a little better, if you get overwhelmed, just stop and do something else for a while. Its not a sprint even though every boss every tells you it is.
man your kid would be so lucky to have you for a father
Your videos are amazing, I love how I'm over here taking notes, excited about it hahahaha
Same. So much value in his storytelling.
I’ve just moved to a new country alone, and you’ve been a lifesaver during this period dude.
I want to go to this coffee shop haha
japan's got you covered
czcams.com/video/n8FcUGrD0-s/video.html
I've been getting all comfortable since the last 3 months and tbh its completely killing my creativity.
This video made me feel much more than any TED talk I've ever watched. Thank you.
So good as always! I will probably listen to this one 25 more times.
Awesome video! I’m gonna finish watching it later.
I innitially thought of replying with wtf, but realized I was about to do the same thing😦
@@krisellee2606 Hahah true. It was 1am when I was aimlessly browsing youtube instead of sleeping. So the starting minutes of this kicked my butt into realizing I was stupid and should sleep.
The only thing I’d like to add is: make your bed in the morning (honestly makes or breaks my day, kinda like the one minute rule thing)
That's such a sweet compliment :)
I cant tell you how much your videos help me to organise my life. just finished high school and I don't know what to do with myself but watching your videos helps a lot.
Yooooooooooooooooo... "The cup list" sounds revolutionary. Because the bucket list would be the "ideal" life, but the cup list would be a BETTER life :O
Like holy shit I am making one rn... tnx!
Oh man- my wedding got canceled because of the quarantine and I was relieved as well- looking to plan something very simple for the second go around especially considering the money we lost from planning the first one
You are contributing SO much to other people’s lives man. Including my own.
The Cup List is highly relatable. We just moved into a new apartment so the tasks I'm being complacent about just tripled. I made my own Cup list (I'm calling it Offline Awesomeness) and tackling #1 right now. Time to put away these books! Thanks Struthless
I need a bigger cup!!!!
Or am I missing the point ;-)
Yes.
I'll start with a teaspoon.
All the best everbodypeeps.
Great videos man!
I don’t want to speak too soon but this hit a good spot. I can be very complacent. But when you said “life is short and you want the experience” that’s a reason for me to take action sooner than later….
Hope your month has been filled with much action and kicking goals, my friend :)
I really appreciate the frequent uploads! They way you talk about this stuff is extremely relatable.
Advice I would give to my unsuccessful future self: get a ballon :')
Somehow I can see you accidentally saying "I'm not your dad" to your kids once you have them lol
I think you just uncovered the cognitive dissonance in my life and why it feels so... distressing. Cheers mate.
No, it's the depression.
Discovering struthless last week was the best thing happened to me. I just love his videos so much. Thank you for being .
Man, you're so helpful and you always come right on time, God bless you!
This channel deserves way more recognition. I can't explain how helpful and inspiring are his insights to me !!!
You really give me a lot of things to think through and helpful advices that came exactly on time of need
Please have a nice day and all the best wishes with wedding!
Dude I am loving all of these educational videos. That font video was SO good and I feel like you really do your research. Much appreciated!
mannn i really love the format of your videos, it always comes with how to actually concretely apply your advice and not just letting us do the work without a direction in mind. most times there are just advice floating around and we sometimes end up in an information overload bc we sometimes don't have a directive on how to apply it.
Thanks a lot, i'm glad i discovered you at one of my lowest points in my life. Cheers :)
My day starts with watching one of your videos i haven't seen before and then throttling through life. Grateful for you!
