    First let me say, great show, I think you are one of the best reviewers out there, keep it up! So two caveats that weren't mentioned. One, warranty with the tuner is only good to 36,000 miles. if you have purchased extended warranty and use the tuner, you void your extended warranty. Two, for warranty to stay valid with tuner, it must be installed at a Ford performance shop. Maybe one more caveat, if you purchased the tuner from a third party and not directly from Ford, you will have a hard time getting even a Ford Performance shop to do the install. I purchased one for a great price from Stage3Motorsports and I cant find a Ford Performance shop that will install the tuner. I have an extended warranty, so Im going to wait a bit before I install and will probably end up doing it myself.

    • @JonBecker81
      @JonBecker81 Před rokem +8

      The reason why they tell you to get it installed at a dealer is so they’ll have it on record that the truck is tuned. If you do it yourself there’s a good chance wherever you take your truck to get serviced will never know that the truck is tuned and your warranty will be fine. It’s a risk for sure. I bought my tuner from Levittown Ford and just had my dealer install it. No issues. I’m not too worried about the extended power train warranty. I might even get a different tuner once the factory warranty runs out. 5 star has tuning where you can select between multiple different tunes for different driving scenarios. You can even buy a warranty from them.

    • @66racer
      @66racer Před rokem +2

      @@JonBecker81 there is a counter for when the ECU was flashed, so they can tell that SOMEONE flashed it and I think the miles when it was flashed. Someone I know had a shop do a tune on his f150, gave him some profiles and I guess didn't mention one was an e85 tune, well he ran that one in 91 which killed the engine. He flashed it back but Ford didn't cover it because they saw the flash history.
      I want that tune from Ford but didn't know it kills the extended warranty. Even with stock tune I would like an intercooler for summer towing but want zero chance of Ford telling me I'm SOL.

      @JonBecker81 Před rokem +6

      @@66racer I talked to a service manager at a Ford dealer and he said most of the guys who work on these wouldn’t even know what to look for if one was tuned. Maybe if it blew a head gasket or something then they’d look a little closer. Or Maybe that’s just not saying a lot about the techs working there? I tow a travel trailer with mine with the FP tune. Wolf pup 16 PF. It does fantastic. Merging on the interstate I’ll look down and realize I’m doing 75 in a flash. I also have fox 2.0’s front and back and 32 inch KO2’s. Is basically a level 2 FP ranger with the stock black 18’s and no blue tow hooks. Just the standard fx4 hooks. I didn’t see the purpose in paying for stuff I didn’t want/need.

    It should be noted that the available 3yr / 36000mi warranty that comes with this tune is only applicable when applied/installed by a Ford dealership OR an ASE/Red Seal certified technician....you can DIY the tune yourself as seen but you open yourself up to questions if you rod on the truck afterwards and try to use any existing factory warranty (powertrain)
    Also using 93 octane in stock form greatly pumps the power of the 2.3 vs 87 without a tune....I'm still trying to find performance reviews of using 93 octane stock vs this tune...outside of an improved shift pattern i have not yet been able to find ratings to support a large gain over just using the higher octane

    Impressive gains. 3 things kinda suck about this. First, you need a windows computer which I dont have. Second, you have to run premium fuel, which is around $10 more per fill-up, or $500 more per year. Lastly, it’s $900 which is really on the expensive side for ECU tunes… but at least you dont void the warranty. All in all, I would probably pass on it. One second quicker 0-60 is impressive, but stock, the Ranger is already quick, and I dont really tow often so all that extra cost probably isnt worth it for my use case.

    Not too shabby! I'd definitely rather have the additional power with premium gas over less power on regular. I mean you'll probably be spending more per mile in depreciation for a vehicle like this anyways, so why not make the most out of those miles if you can keep the factory warranty? The only thing that concerns me about this is the K&N filter, as K&N filters are dreadfully bad at actually filtering particulates (I'd suggest watching the Project-Farm video on it), but it's otherwise pretty sweet to see manufacturer-backed tuning options like this.
    As for speed, the newest Colorado with the 310hp/430lb-ft 2.7L i4T will probably be a sleeper truck, but until that releases we can't know for certain. The 6.8s 0-60mph time they gave sounds EXTREMELY conservative because that's how quick the early lower-output 310hp/348lb-ft 2.7T Silverados were...

      Ford released data (As shown on Ford Authority's website) on the 2.3 in the full size bronco that says using 87 octane nets 275hp and 310 ft lbs torque....using 93 octane the engine outputs 300hp and 325 ft lbs of torque.
      I guess then what I'm wondering is that if using this tune in conjunction with 93 octane already would I be looking at then a gain of 25hp and 45 ft lbs of tq....which is nothing to sneeze at ...I really just can't find the comparable #'s

    Here's a real question. Does the tune just change the truck while it is shifted in DRIVE mode or, does it change both DRIVE and SPORT. I have not seen much on if it does in fact change the way the truck drives while shifted into SPORT, before vs after tune.

    • @Xavier1320
      @Xavier1320 Před rokem

      Because of the extra power, torque and throttle calibration Drive feels more like Sport mode. In Sport mode the truck shifts noticeably faster

    Performance is great with tune... reliability is yet to be seen. I have my doubts power increase comes at a cost of engine longevity. This is why Toyota stopped offering the Tundra with available supercharger, which gave it insane performance. Interestingly, that supercharger set up was still reliable... just not up to Toyota standards. Now, if I had a ranger and had the extra weight and accessories as you do, would I do the flash? Absolutely 😅! For 1,000$ and factory warranty backed? Why wouldn't l lol😊. Enjoy.

    Love the review, but the BIG item you forgot is fuel mileage. What was the change?
    Also, if you were concerned about traction, you could have engaged the diff lock for the speed runs.

    • @___Karma__
      @___Karma__ Před rokem +1

      Maybe I'm too traditional or perhaps uninformed on the newer technology, however from my understanding you wouldn't want to lock your diffs unless you are off road at lower speeds. Otherwise you will put extra stress on the drivetrain and most likely break something.

    • @pat8988
      @pat8988 Před rokem +2

      @@___Karma__ It is generally accepted logic not to drive in 4WD, or with the diff locked on dry paved roads. BUT, when driving in a straight line, there is no extra stress on the drive line and it is not harmful to do so for just a quarter mile. All four wheels are traveling at the same speed when driving in a straight line.

    • @billygames7107
      @billygames7107 Před 6 měsíci

      Yes agreed, I would have locked diff and ran 4x4 high just sitting the run and disengage before turning again. Should all be fine and I would also power boost launch. Bet I could hit under 6 seconds if done right all without hurting a thing except Toyotas ego..Baha

    So, update from my comment from two months ago. I live in Oklahoma and couldn't find any dealers that would even attempt to install the tune on my truck. So I got fed up with it all and installed it myself and have no regrets at all. The entire process took about an hour and a half and was very simple to do. I was really wanting the improved shift pattern, for me the power is fine. Everything is improved now, shift pattern, power and acceleration and it tows a trailer much better now as well. I did not install the K&N air filter, Im still using stock. My fuel mileage is still roughly the same maybe just a bit less in city driving. It was such a change it took me a bit to relearn to drive the truck! As far as my extended warranty, something that was mentioned by someone in my comment two months ago resonated with me, in that my dealer probably wouldn't even know I had installed the tune on my truck and I agree with this. I for one highly recommend this tune.
