Do Covid-19 Vaccines Cause Multiple Sclerosis? {Neurologist Reviews Observational Evidence)

  • In this video, I review an excellent observational study of people with radiologically isolated syndrome (people who have multiple sclerosis lesions on MRI but no symptoms who are at risk of developing clinical multiple sclerosis). Do people with RIS who received covid-19 vaccines have an increased risk of MS?

    I was diagnosed with MS in 2002 (not long after a flu shot) and for 20+ years my biggest problem was a numb left foot, meaning I could still drive a car and get around with relative ease. Then I got the COVID shots and within days, my RIGHT foot went numb. And now I’m noticing problems with my hands. If I could go back in time, I would NEVER have gotten the COVID shots.

      Thats correct. Any foreign body can cause one’s immune system (one who has autoimmune conditions) to get confused. Any cold, bacterial/viral event; they can all cause a flare up. Even getting a tattoo, or piercing, or anything like that! This vaccine cannot cause MS (its not live), and i am NOT anti vax at all, but when i was 15 i had immunoglobulin anaemia (low immune system) and I received a live vaccine (gardasil), which im sure accelerated the onset of my MS! About 2 to 3 weeks after my third vaccine, I remember getting this sharp stabbing pain in my spine. I didn't think much of it as I thought maybe I was just sitting funny (I don't have the best posture). About two weeks after that I ended up in emergency because my legs went numb but it was that intense numbness that hurts. I was in so much pain that I could barely walk. My balance was out of whack because I had zero spatial awareness of my legs and feet. It was about 5 months after this that I got an MRI done and they found a lesion on my spine and two on my brain. The following month I got a lumbar puncture which confirmed banded proteins. 4-5 months after that I was officially diagnosed with MS. On the positive side, I have not had covid or at least have never had symptoms.

    I was diagnosed "preliminarily" 3 weeks after a C19 infection, 2 weeks after C19 I had severe ON which I now have permanent left eye blindness from. (waited 3 months to confirm MRI changes for definitive diagnosis) My white blood cell count was very low at the time - lower than on immunosuppressive drugs now (vumerity). Prior to my infection I had never experienced any MS symptoms as far as I am aware. * I suppose I will never know but I wonder if C19 allowed EBV to resurface (as many of the symptoms seemed similar) - perhaps a dual infection? Perhaps because of the stress on my immune system some form of molecular mimicry occurred with either EBV / C19 / both(?). The fact my immune system was shot at the time of my first blood test (also 3 weeks after infection so I imagine it may have been even worse /lower) leads me to think there may be a slim causal relation. I suppose I will never know for sure though... and indeed it seems MS takes hold years prior to symptom onset.

    • @Elem70
      @Elem70 Před 11 měsíci

      Yes, years (or decades) prior to symptom onset. I’ve made a similar comment above but if anything the vaccines and/or infections are alerting you to the disease. An MS diagnosis requires several things, including space and time between lesions. So you likely already had years (or decades) of asymptomatic disease activity prior to symptom onset

    Thks Dr! Great content!
    I think it is so important that both science and general people pay attention to the correlations between the onset of MS during the pandemia.
    During the pandemia many hospitals around the world attended neurological
    emergencies due to Covid infection.
    So it is a fact that SarsCov-2 has biological potential to get in the CNS with possible risks of neural inflammation.
    Anyone being diagnosed during the pandemic course should talk to their doctors about it, because many neurologists also participate in scientific researches.
    The virus could be the trigger or the cause of it, and maybe in some cases of CIS , the infection could be related to a neurological reaction to the virus for that occasion- when the immune system gets confused with the virus activity.
    Time will bring more answers.
    * I always try to watch your videos because I learn a lot from them! 😍

It wasn't until they did a spine MRI that they found the first lesion so I always advise people to insist on that, especially if your syptoms are in the hands and feet, or you have Lhermittes sign. If you take a hot shower or bath do your symptoms get worse? Also a very good indicator. But basically I just had yearly check ups (as I technically had CIS) and when they found lesions - boom diagnosis.

    What is strange for me is that I had my first relapse right when the covid 19 pandemic started (then we didn't know what it was yet) my whole body went numb, both legs, stomach, arm, a year later the same thing happened to me only that I I also had double images and only last year after optic neuritis I was diagnosed with MS. Does anyone have any experience and know that there may be a connection, I also never had the typical clinical picture of the covid virus while my family did. Suggestion for videos. Can you dive into epidemiological evidence? I’m no expert like you, but I think the key to solving MS is in studying it’s unusual distribution. For example, why is it relatively common in Key West Florida while a few miles away in the Bahamas it is rare. Why when it is supposedly related to latitude is the rate higher in Minnesota than Alaska? Why is some county in Ohio the commonest place for MS in the country? I think way too much emphasis is placed on genetics. I can’t change that. but it seems like every time doctors think about identifying environmental factors, they just dismiss it and say it is unknown. Well yeah if you want 100% proof it will remain unknown. It seems like we often hear that MS is a combination of genetics and some unknown environmental factor. That sounds great until you realize that is the answer for just about every disease out there, including cancer, Alzheimer’s, you name it. It’s basically a medical punt.

    Pre-COVID very healthy. No medical history at all. Months after experiencing COVID I was hit with optic neuritis May 2023 at 49 1/2 years of age. This has permanently diminished vision in my left eye. Worried that this condemns me to a future with MS.
