- I've been using this Roam Adventure Co. Rambler prototype roof top tent for 4 months now and in this video I share with you my thoughts on the tent, show you some of the features and discuss the pros and cons of a hard-shell vs. a soft-shell roof top tent.

Fyi for the past seven months or so I have pulled up your content and have bought and started building my version yes you are a strong influence. and thanks very much for you desire to do video. so much more to say. but much gratitude.
Hi Brad, I went for a hard shell because of you đ and I do love it, it is a V shape model 55 wide from another company. . With the V shape, the ladder is further back due to the window position so it clears the door. It was the main reason I went with that model. I did purchase double shoe bag from Thule/Tapui and it comes with a pole so super easy to attach to the rack or ladder thanks again for the great info's
Just bought a 2016 JKU in Rhino Gray, 3.5â lift on 35âs!!! Whaaaat! Now I get to follow your channel instead of just casually watch! Lol
So nice to see more options for RTTs today that it was 6 to 7 years ago when I bought mine I bought a James Baroud grand rapid XXL model. If you're the type of sleeper who likes to keep your elbows out and not parallel to your sides, then the JB tent works great when you have a partner to sleep with. This size tent sticks out on the sides and covers the entire Rhino Rack platform but having two people sleep inside is butter for me. Mounting an awning was not a problem either. I have the Eezi Awn Bat Manta on my JKUR.
The Roam tent appears to be a bit taller and also have the window shades to keep the sun out which are nice features. Although if you're in the market for a hardshell RTT, consider the JB. I love mine. The JB also has a solar powered fan at the roof which is near silent to vent out or bring in air which is great in the colder climates when the isothermic accessory is added.
I used it at the Burning Man festival last year and never felt hot despite the blazing sun cooking the roof not to mention having corner mesh windows also to create an almost complete 360 window experience. The other design feature I like about the JB is that the roof is recessed towards the rear so I keep a pair of maxtraxs up there without sticking above grade as well as a camp table thatsits over the rear tire when being used. Still can't fit into most indoor garages due to the lift kit and all but hey....it's overland glamping.
Now, if they can sell a shoe rack or something on the outside would be great. Still figuring that part out.
This guy is the Mr. Rogers of the off-roading world. Really like the thorough and informative videos and the family-friendly format. Cheers.
You are absolutely right!!! love his videos!!!!
Brad is the best, right?
Hello Brad... wanted to say Thank you for all the work you do to make your channel professional and informative! I just ordered a Roam Vagabond XL and used the TrailRecon discount and got $99.99 off the price! I am super excited to get out there with my wife in our 2017 JKUR and explore and use our new Roam RTT. Have a great rest of the summer and keep the content coming!!! Cheers! Paul
Thanks, Brad. I think you sold me on a clam shell if I decide to go RTT. That one looks particularly well made.
Been waiting for this for a while now
Love the content as always, but im a confirmed Fold out tent fan. I like the extra awning it gives you and I have the annex to create a separate room.
Ill be using it a lot this year, as I work Security at large events such as music festivals, motor racing events etc
I do like the ease of setup with the hard shell though, thats definitely a bonus
This is what I would want! Thanks for the video!
Glad you got some good time in it now and can give a great opinon been looking forward to this on
Great video!! I have a Smittybilt RTT and its great! I've always wondered about the hard-shell kind! Not having to deal with the cover seems like a huge plus!
CONGRATS...!!!! đđŒđ
Awesome stuff. I own a Jeep cause of your content. I accidentally found your channel and got the bug... So Thanks!!!
So great to hear you are enjoying the content! Thank you!
@@TrailRecon I spent a day watching your videos. The stuff you all can do is great. I live in the Ozark Mountains and have discovered some neat places to trail. I would not have discovered that passion if it wasn't for you and your content.
This is dope
Nice! Iâm about to buy a Jeep, and it was TrailReconâs video adventure along CA highway 395 that did it for me. My favorite area of the country.
I've been following for a few years and I love how far this ride has come Brad! Thanks for the great content!
Thanks for being a long time subscriber, appreciate the support!!
super informative, very inspirational with great views and footage.
Awesome review. Def jealous of that set up and break down time.
Suggestion. I have a hard shell roof top tent and the addition of a 270 awning will give you the extra enclosure you miss when combined with the detachable panels that are available. My set up is a Fox Wing Eco 2.1 by Oztent. It too opens and closes in a matter of seconds. The combination of the hard shell and the awning system makes for a pretty complete and flexible system. I've been very pleased with this set up. Dutch
Great Vid Brad. Iâm still holding on to my ground tent, but I sure like the sleekness.
Thanks Brad, if I hadnt bought a Tepui a few months ago, that one would be first on my list! I would be happy support ROAM for sure, a great company for sure !
I have a similar tent from a other producer (looks the same) Im super happy with it, and it fits the JK perfectly. No problems so far after a year of use, and I have spend a lot of nights up there.
Awesome decals u got there sir! More power to you.
Great video Brad! Back here in aus I have seen a number of people putting a piece of elastic around the middle of the tent to solve the need to tuck all the fabric in when you pack tent up. When the tent is set up the struts should be strong enough to keep the elastic stretched out.
Thanks for these videos!
Man your Jeep is Sick! Just Sick! Man wow you totally nailed it. Itâs not to much or just over done and the tent just makes it all the better. Very very well done man!!! Just found your channel liked and subbed!!!
The best roof-top tent i have seen so far. fuss free!
Again thank you for the video. I am a new subscriber, love watching these kind of videos and tagging along on the adventures.
Awesome and welcome to the channel!
Omg I love this Brad!!
Right on!
Does roam adv. co still makes these? I can't find it on their website!
Great review. Iâm looking into a hard shell, particularly âikamperâ. It looks as though your able to keep your bedding inside as well & have the awning, additional room add on as well. Shoe holder too đđ». Keep up the great work đ
We just got the iKamper and it is AWESOME! King-sized bed and it opens and closes just as easily as Brad's... I agonized for a few years waiting for the right rooftop set up, and I am super happy with our purchase. Brad's review, with his soft shell experience and cons of his current set-up just confirmed we made the right choice.
just bought my ikamper 4 man.... dont have it yet, gets installed Saturday but i have researched a ton. ikamper has some real tangible benefits
Never realize something like this existed. Just started exploring buying a jeep. Thank you for the video. I may start to like camping outdoors.
Folded up it looks a lot better than the other rooftop tents. Once itâs up I think itâs ugly. I like how fast and easy it goes up though. For the kind of camping you do ( overlanding) itâs worth it.
I watch all of your video's man and i got to tell you i love this video you did about the roof top tent the way you describe everything in such great detail it really shows us fan's what its really like its like we are there doing the walk around with you it's just so great i watched your video about your upgrades on the inside of your jeep about the vector bar i orderd that and i have that comming for my jeep and now im definitely going to get this same roof top tent its the perfect one for me so thank you so much for doing what you do and ill be looking forward to your next videos of your trip im warren Brumfield from ohio i hope you have a great day and have fun on your trips
Another great review
awesome going to buy one now
Great review. want to get one now.
Fantastic honest review! Pros and cons....love it.
Appreciate it!
Awesome video Brad
Another great review! Thanks!!
Thank you!
Great vid Brad!! And congrats on the Gladiator!!!
Thank you!
Very good tent Brad and for sure you have a lot of experience about that. Great video and thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Hi Brad, thank you for this video. I am on the fence about buying a regular tent or top roof. We are 2+1 family, so I need to look for another alternative. Very informative as always, and congratulations for great collaboration with the top tent company.
Love your channel. Great content!
Thank you so much!
You have by far one of the best looking jeeps on the internet.
WOW! Thank you!
Really good video work.
First time watching one of your videos! Thanks for creating it! I noticed a Yaesu mike :) 73s
Thanks for the review Definitely appreciate the effort you put in to making the videos. Especially when you are probably thinking about the GLADIATOR!!
Not gonna lie, the Gladiator is heavy on my mind... so much to do!
Tent looks pretty good I wouldn't mind having one of those except for my Smittybilt was only $657 I could buy almost four of them the cover was my biggest problem at first but now but I'm used to doing it it only takes me a few minutes and it really doesn't get that dirty on the inside
I think ursa minor really has tue best design, very pricey, but how cool going from inside your jeep to the tent. I also like that one side of it stays hardside
I like the hard top option! But we are adopting 2 young children and need room for 4. I am going to explore this more! Thanks for posting it
This is perfect for 1 person honestly.
Just wanted to say thanks dude đ€đŸ because of your videos I have been turning my Jeep into a nasty overland vehicle. Iâm also broke.... my wifeâs pissed.... but when she kicks me out the RTT works well. Keep up the vids !!
LOL! Youâre welcome... fingers crossed you arenât homeless soon!
Great video thank you!
Thank you!
Thanks for the videos ! Very informative and helpful. One question on the hard top. Do they have zip up covers from bottom for screen so you can have a bit more privacy but still have half screen open. I have a truck tent that My husband and I use and works well. I love the inner zip screen covers that zip from the bottom. Great privacy but still have air flow!!
Looks good!
I love your videos
That is dope !
Great video. Love the hard shell. Too small for me and the wife + dog.
I like the hard shell. I think that's the option I want to put on top of the rail system for my Dakota.
Iâd like to get my hands on one. I just started to save up some cash. For the time being I just use a regular camping tent and a Remington 870. Seems to do the trick for now.
I used a standard ground tent for many years. RTTâs are great, but not required to get out and have some awesome adventures.
Mad views awesome track
It's probably important to remember that you're 6ft up in the air when getting out of bed in the morning.
Thank you Brad, very cool!
Nice very cool!!!!
I want the rooftop tent that Marco has!đ
Matthew Hatton Freespirit Recreation
I love my ursa minor. You should look into getting one.
Nice reviewđ. I have my concerns of taking such a heavy load on top for fear of gravity issues on the trails. How do you see it, please advise. Presently, I make do with a ground tent with its pros and cons.
Fantastic share! Might I please tap your knowledge and experience regarding the Jeep and tires. Since our 2017 Jeep Sahara also sees everyday use we would like to switch over to better tires without lifting the Jeep. What is the largest size tires that you feel would handle reasonable off-road demands and provide a smooth and quiet ride on pavement without us modifying our Jeep? Many Thanks!
Good review, thank you. But have you ever considered giving the Ursa Minor J30 top a try? If you do can you review it for us?
Nice rig
Brad, Only another several thousand dollars and you could get a Ursa Minor pop top to enter from inside. Oh yah, the graphics, well maybe for the gladiator? Don't forget the soft ice cream machine, lvol. Have fun. Happy trails!!!
Hey Brad, awesome video. Can you still remove the 2 front panels of the freedom top with this tent? I want to get a rooftop tent thats super quick to open and close, but am also very fond of the removing the freedom panels in front. Thx.
Do you have a video on the set up? As far as the brackets you used to mount onto your rhino rack pioneer? Thank you
When is the Hardshell Roof Top Tent going to be available? Looks awesome!
Looks great, BUT, with any collapsible tent, if it rains and you put it away wet, you better bring it back out ASAP!!! to dry out or MOLD can happen. You ever have any problems with this? Id guess not being on the west coast. Were on the east coast. Much different weather out here...
Cool video.
Very niceđ
Like to see your overland Jeep Gladiator video with your new camper shell on it. You have that yet? Wondering how that will work with the camper shell and tent on top etc
Nice!
Nice roof top, it would be interesting to see your group checkout the earthquake damage near ground zero and make it through some crevices.
Nice!!
High, closed looks this roof-tent much better than the other ones. Kindly Fiete
Hey Brad nice video.
? Do they fit on 2 doors. Also my 2 door has a barracade roof rack ( currently on for transport of my kayaks) I'm looking to go out to alaska and this hard shell would make my trip an adventure & less expensive, making stops on several campsite for down time on my way there.
Thanks.
Great stuff man,
Subscribed!!!
Nice review and demo ... is there any way that this tent could work with an awning that is also attached to the roof? Can you have both? Thanks!
My $10 pup tent served me well for many years, then I moved up to a four man tent for the space. That has been nice but I am tired of sleeping on the ground, now after 40 years of it. So if I could find a roof top tent that fits on my beloved TJ, that may be the ticket. I would hate having to upgrade to a new JL so I can fit a roof top tent. But It would be sooo nice! :-)
I was running a smittybilt overlander on my yj with no issues.
How about a model that you can enter and exit by the skylight....and open and close awnings from the inside
Nice video! I canât seem to find this exact tent on Roam. ? Do you think this rooftop tent will fit on top of a FJ ?
Thankyou,
Marisa
Have you checked out the ikamper tent? It seems like an interesting cross between the traditional soft and hard shell rooftop tents.
I like this
Awesome tent but how does the flat roof deal with rain and snow?
Does not appear that this tent is still being made. I cannot find it the Roam website
What roof rack/mounts are you using?, I just bought this tent and noticed that on my jku the rain gutter doesn't go all the way to the back, need guidance
Setup is sweet
I purchased the IKamper Skycamp and that is also a hardshell but very large as it too overlapse and sleeps 4 adults.
Loved the video on the ROAM hard-shell tent prototype. Too bad ROAM doesnât sell or make anything like it. Itâs been a couple years, so I guess ROAM decided to stay with the soft-material options that have the long set-up and break-down times and all the other shortcomings you mentioned.
Iâve a hardshell Tentbox classic and a fold out Tentbox lite. Honestly, I think the time thing only is an objection if youâre constantly in a state of rushing. My Lite (folding one) takes less than 3 minutes, and my classic under 1.
If my life were to be so busy that 2 minutes extra constantly makes that much of a difference then Iâd start taking diazepam again.
Great review!
Off topic question: whatâs the O.D. dimension of the jeepâs driver-tire to passenger-tire? TIA đđ»
When is this product actually coming out? I donât see it on their website
Awesome
The awning issue. It would be really cool if one side had a pull out awning like the old projector screens. It could be all self contained in the hard shell.
The link you provided does not have the tent for sale? Has it been removed?
