I've heard this many times but i honestly doubt the Arabs caused it mainly because Without the Romans in the West the Germanic Kingdoms had to slowly rebuild and relearn stuff from the Romans and Improve or invent new things sure it's centuries after the fall of Rome but Rebuilding takes time around the time of the Crusades the Europeans were in a much better position compared to Dark Age/ Early Medieval Europe after many Years of improvement

And yes Europe was in the dark ages during Muslim expansion but even the term "Dark Ages" is quite an not really a useful term since the period marks an era numbering nearly a thousand years. I'm not sure how we were considered third world countries? Europe was still pretty strong during the period such as Reconquista, Crusades, and managed to repel the Mongols which the Muslims didn't manage to do and it actual caused the end of the Islamic Golden Age when the Mongols destroyed Baghdad.

I find it bewildering that "history fans" will drool at the thought of the Roman empire and everything they did, yet criticize these caliphates for doing virtually nothing different, if not maybe even a little better to its citizens. I don't get how people will hear that 1/3 of Rome were literal slaves, yet lob stones at these Caliphates who, albeit weren't perfect, were much more likely to grant rights to its conquered subjects than the stories that come from the Romans.

The problem are the Wahabits, who came into existence in the 19th century. The Abbasids in the middle ages were actually advanced for their time, but probably did not had such a strict approach to Islam. they were faithful, but much more tolerant.

I’m so lucky o had a chance to visit Iraq in 1985 before all the craziness because the war with Iran didn’t really interfere with our trip…people at the checkpoints were always accommodating and polite and we went from north to south everywhere.
When we reached the Malwiya Tower in Samarra though, I was very afraid to climb up because after few steps, I realised the wind was so strong, it could have blown me off those stairs easily. There was no exterior rail on it…
My husband and our driver went up more than half way on the spiralling tower but then they climbed down prevented also by the wind to reach the top…

Amazingly enough street food was always fresh and yummy tasting and clean and plentiful, nothing would have made one think there was a war going on, there was absolutely no shortages of food and the markets and food stores were always full.
Roasted chicken rotisserie style and humus and shawarma and warm flat bread and super sweet tea served in small glasses were everywhere, what was harder to find was fresh hot coffee and any kind of soup.
In Baghdad we went to a Yugoslavian restaurant near the Yugoslavian Embassy (or Consulate - cannot remember exactly) to eat some soup or cevapcici for a more European tasting meal, including pork meat steak sometimes.
So you were brave enough to visit Iraq when Saddam Hussein ruled? It's a wonder tourism was permitted.
