I had a new Cappuccino in ‘95. One of the official imports. Great fun in the real world. You could drive flat out more or less everywhere.
Not a car if you’re the sort that worries about his macho image. But if you enjoy driving, it’s a great little car.
Only kept it for a year, but still have very fond memories of it.
ah i want one, and im just 16. here in germany they are quite expensive but cheap ones come up on the market every now end then, maybe i will be able to snatch one as a first car and then just hope i can daily it haha.
It's a very silly car, and I cannot recommend them ;)

@@happi6969 I can fully understand, but be careful what you are wishing for. Only 50 cars have officially come to Germany as part of the deal that Suzuki GB had made with Japan. Because of its rarity spare parts, when needed, can be difficult to get and very expensive. It is now a collector's car, and not the best one for every day use.
@HJPorschen um actually that not true, I can get pretty much anything I want for mine from Japan and mine is the more rare version, ea21r. Drive mine daily, super reliable, have my bigger 4x4 for long trips.
@@TurnMaster I had my Cappo from 1997 until 2001, when I still lived in the UK, and my car was one of the official UK imports. Suzuki GB was not very supportive; for them it was just a burden. Already in 2000 they quoted about £4000 (!) for a set of new seals for the roof panels! That was too much for me. I am glad to hear that you can manage to keep your car alive. These cute little cars deserve it.

The car I won on gran turismo and ended up being very annoyed! Until I tried it out 😍 what a car.
After couple Exige v6 and 1.8 sports performance with roof scoop. I’ve had 3/4 Cappu since c.99 and they almost equal fun to Lotus in pint sized proportions. And last one was rotting to core. Seriously a dog to look at. Euro look rat look would not look as rough . And I loved it. Used to be 3999 and now more 11999 with bitty ones 5999-7999. Maybe 4K find an ok so so not too bad bargain one. Has the fun gone at 12k cannot be sure . My last bought and sold under £1800 in last 24 months. It was just so entertaining. Nice to drive. Tight even. Plain fun. But the Worst condition car within a 25 mile radius.
Had our Cappo about seven years now....paid a bit over the odds for it (I think) and had to spend a bit more on welding ! Love this little car though, only goes out on dry sunny days but it just puts a smile on your face every time you drive it ( if you can find a decent road). Maybe, one day it will be worth something but, until then we'll just carry on enjoying it 😀
This is gonna sound odd, but I've got to say: the drive-past noise the Cappucino makes is incredibly pleasant. Tyre, wind, and, yes, that hint of engine noise is just delightful.

Had one, good engine, torqier than you'd think. Around 45 MPG, fun while it lasted. Probably the only car I've known that loves rust more than an mx5..
JDM cars need a proper undersealing when they come to the UK and face our salty roads. UK destined Japanese built cars serve better.

Love 'em. I worked for a Suzuki dealer when these brilliant things were on sale. We sold several and I've wanted one ever since. Great fun ant completely silly. Wonderful.

There's a mechanic that works in a shop within walking distance of me here in Florida that has one of these. I've seen him driving around in it and it put a big smile on my face just watching!

Got one and love it. The later model ones have 17% more torque and alloy block and a timing chain, the old ones have a belt.

So glad you reviewed the Cappuccino before they all rusted out in the UK.
I've had mine since 2010 and it's an incredible car with some modification, surprising many more expensive cars on a mountain pass or B-road.
I have fitted a G13b engine from the Suzuki Swift GTI and have plans to build it up to over 200kw with a Garret turbo. It would be a lot of fun.
But right now I'm torn whether to sell up instead and step into a newer 986/7 Boxster S or Cayman for the same money I'd spend on the Cappuccino modifications.
I have to say, aside from finding affordable clothes that fit one of the greatest issues with being 6'3" and *ahem* 'solidly' built is that cars like this simply aren't doable for me. It's a great shame, because I quite like them.
Ah I hear your pain, also 6'3" and "generously" built. I had a 1966 MG Midget when a lot more svelte and even more recently a Mazda MX5 NB but in the end I had to pray at the alter of Porsche and now Have a 981 Boxster S.
I will see your 6 ft 3 and raise it to my 6 ft 5" 17 stone self 😀

Nice one, had the pleasure of driving one when they were new, wondered what happened to them.
I found out about Cappuccino back when I was 5 after my aunt bought me some car magazines from her stint in Japan. I admit I wasn't too enamoured by Cappuccino back then, I thought it was a dumpy girly looking thing.
Now at 29, I appreciate Cappuccino greatly in the same way I genuinely appreciate S660 and AutoZam AZ-1. Unique, quirky small fun machine.
Would love to see a JayEmm review of the AZ-1!

Very cool little thing. I wish you could get your hands on a Daihatsu Copen, in my eyes one of the prettiest Kei-cars ever.
Always liked the look of the Cappuccino, just well designed and huge fun in a tiny package
There are some pretty cool little kei cars. All kinds of unique little things with boosted 660cc engines 😅 quite fun to mod and still have money left over 😀
Had the Daihatsu Copen kei car 2nd Gen which had the larger 4 cylinder 1.3 litre. Owned for 6 years and 100,000 miles. Loved every second. Looked like a mini Audi TT but had a folding hard top like a SLK. Fantastic economy, bomb proof engine (Toyota mostly), the most feelsome hydraulic steering and FUN,FUN,FUN! Had the chassis rigidity of a jelly! Got an Ariel Atom next which I still own. Simon Saunders (founder of Ariel) said I was the 3rd Copen owner to then buy an Atom.
Was it fun even with FWD ?
Yes absolutely. RWD is not the be all and end all. Just see reviews of many of the Honda Type R’s or Integras as well as Renault Clio or Megane sports. The key thing with kei cars are their lightness. Immediately so agile and responsive. Then tyres,brakes and pads last ages.
There's a guy in the UK who has done the Hayabusa swap; he's got it up to 380HP. Maybe have a look for him and get it on the channel (after taking out a huge life insurance policy first!).

Fun little car
I had one as my first car in 2020, still have it but looking to get rid at the moment. Really fantastic little cars for learning about driving as it's so chuckable and such a neutral chassis. Sadly got into a knock earlier this year and the lack of parts availability has kept me from getting it back on the road, and I just want it out of my hair... But really an awesome little nugget, highly recommend giving one a go if you ever have the chance!!
What type of damage has your car sustained?
@@byronmills5952 Mostly bodywork. The structure is mostly unaffected, but the front subframe took a beating and it's the lack of availability thereof that is holding me back from putting it back on the road
That's unfortunate for the poor Cappuccino but I'm glad you're okay. Also, I didn't expect to see some of the FailRace crew in the comments nor did I realise you had a Cappuccino for some time.

On the British small car tax dodge, its worth remembering old British cars were only taxed on engine bore, not cc. Hence pre-60s British cars tended to have long-stroke, low revving lumps.
Had a drive in one of these about 15 years ago, what a hoot! Great to see one featured. Also, love the shirt - where is it from??

My then gf had one, we'd go out and park in the multi story all night and not pay a penny as it fitted under the barrier. It was a uk silver car and wanted to rot as none of them have any rust proofing. Good leg room surprisingly and I'm over 6'. I liked the gearbox too. Had air-conditioning which was useful as it was always full of condensation!

In a similar vein, would love to see you feature a Fiat Barchetta. Still thinking of getting one to replace my ubiquitous Z4 but don’t want it to disintegrate as I look on 😉. Challenge to find one that drives as it should and isn’t just a pile of rust for c £5 to £7k
i wonder if the 98hp turbo kit suzuki motorsport sells was supposed to come with the car.The graph they show for that kit and the stock car seems to end at what looks like 8500rpm and 7000 rpm respectively.
Can you get hold of a Honda Beat? I remember having a Ferrari 328 GTS and people pulling out on it occasionally after looking - they just looked over the top of it - I had forgotten about this issue until you mentioned it. with the Cappucino. What a fun car though and something narrow much more fun than a wide supercar on B roads.
I feel like just doubling the whp in the Cappuccino would just turn it into a heart attack machine. XD
There was one of these at the Mt Cotton hillclimb in QLD Australia that was warmed and was very competitive for not a lot of money.
Peter, I live local and hope to do Mt Cotton soon too. It's just garage at the moment fixing some oil leak issues.

4/5 years ago you could find a reasonable project one for around £2k so people are already making a few quid on em.
So nearly bought one from a Suzuki dealer customer who had already seen the way the market was going and was squirreling a few away.
I had also been interested in the Cappucino until I realised how expensive those cute little cups are.

The second coolest Kei after Autozam AZ-1. £7000 is reasonably cheap for a minter. Early cars have model designation EA11R, later ones EA21R (from late 1994). EA21 had chain driven cams, aluminium wishbone suspension, VVT with 108Nm (versus 90 for EA11R) and the option of a 3 speed auto - although this now is worth half the price of a manual. I've seen a Cappuccino with a NA EFI 12a rotary in Shibuya, Tokyo.
9:10 - yep, I daily drove a bright yellow Honda Beat for about 10 years. So many people just don't see you - on one occasion a taxi driver just reversed into me at an intersection.

I worked at the import docks when these where new. They are a lot of fun. I remember they had a warning not to put them through a car wash because the aluminum panels may dent! I think they where about 12k new.
You can also get the wheels to leave the ground on a hump with a little commitment.

@@happi6969 prices have increased in Japan as well. They suffer the same rust issues as the UK ones if bought from the North. Japanese owners are also generally less likely to maintain the cars than UK owners. Buying one from Japan should be done cautiously but good ones can be found. There is still a cult following there. 👍
K-cars also started as the 3 wheelers (like an Ape 50).

Bad first and second gear synchros? Sounds like the '67 MGB I had, or the 101 series Alfas I also had. As for cramped seating, an MGA will give the same feeling. These look like fun on backroads, they would work well in New Hampshire where I am.

When they were officially available in the UK, they were £14.5k.
I currently own a capp and I've owned a beat in the states and I have to say that the cap is a lot better on highways but the beat is definitely more fun on the twisties, the beat is geared way too low for American roads

To correct, there’s no such a rule that limit the output of k cars to 64bhp, but this is a gentleman’s agreement like the 280hp rule (the legal output limit for Kei was scrapped in 1960). However like the 280 rule the manufacturer merely put 64bhp on sticker, and some are more than that. In addition there’re k cars more than 64bhp, such as the Caterham 7 160/170 which has 84hp. Caterham doesn’t need to care as it’s not a member of Kei manufacturer’s association and doesn’t sell in volume.

Comments re gearbox spot on, double clutching was the best way for 2nd.
I did however find the engine very free revving and I am sure to the red line. It’s not modern sports car quick but certainly kept up with warm hatches in the early 2000’s
The mod of choice at the time was to swap out the eco to give an extra 20bhp

A friend recently bought a silver one of these (I'm told 20% were silver and the.rest were red).
I've bit yet seen it in the metal but when photographed next to her Abarth 595 it looks so tiny.
I remember the Cappuccino being in sale in the UK and for a Kei sports car they look so much more practical than say an AZ-1.
Controversial I know considering some of the cars to come out of Japan but I think the Kei cars are some of the most interesting.
The AZ-1 is more practical than the Cappu. I know I'm the only one in the world to say this, but it's true. The amount of stuff you can haul in that thing is crazy.
@@Gravengaard I've not had the good fortune to see one close up but when I've seen reviews they look extremely cramped with very little cargo area and a spare wheel behind the seat. The AZ-1 is incredibly cool though having a mod engine and Gul wing doors.
@@markonmotoring well, first thing I did was to remove the spare wheel. Then you can easily fit two overhead trolleys on the rear shelf. Remove the passenger seat (4 bolts - 2 minute operation) and you have a van. I've hauled 4 tyres and 4 rims separately in the cabin 😀

@@Gravengaard as a Cappuccino owner, removing all those things would also provide the same, if not a larger amount of room.
I fit 3 cases of beer behind the seats and a full rack of fishing rods on the passenger seat with the roof off. Hadn't even touched the boot, but if you take the spare wheel out there is oodles of room!

The UK deciding on a similar structure today. We have the F - car (fat), L- large, G - Gargantuan, M - Minging. Thankfully, there are more two ton cars, with none less than a ton these days. Thank god the environment isn’t affected by cars getting larger, less economical and kept for less time. It’s great Boris and his back-hand-buddies keep encouraging buying more and more useless sh1t as the idiots way out of all our environmental problems.
The insurance group in the UK is on the old group system is 13 one below a 205 1.9 GTi and Saxon vts which was 14 ... That is stupid

I have a Smart Roadster I’ve been thinking about offering for a review. It’s a fun car that’s much better with a bit of tweaking than the internet would have you believe. The owners groups are very friendly and helpful as well.

They are fantastic cars. But would sooner have a Smart Roadster. With a roof you can open and shut at 80mph
