What Is Orbital Action?

With a few notable exceptions, most manufacturers have taken their time adding orbital action to cordless reciprocating saws. Everyone wants their saws to cut quickly-so you might wonder if it’s really that big of a deal. The orbital action setting introduces an elliptical motion to the standard back and forth sawing on a reciprocating saw. This more aggressive action removes more material when cutting through wood. With a more aggressive cut, however, comes additional vibration. With the increased chatter, you should avoid using this mode when cutting metal or PVC with a Sawzall.

I bought my dad a Porter Cable reciprocating saw with orbital action about 30 years ago and it blew away the Milwaukee Sawzalls I had used at that point! This was the first time I noticed a reciprocating saw with this feature. The tool has gotten some extreme use over the years and is still running strong today!

I had a rockwell tiger saw with orbital action back in the early 1980s. The two speed switch on low was what a Milwaukee sawzall would on high. The tiger saw on high could easily remove blade teeth and get red hot. It was unstoppable for me.

Hi. Enjoyed your video. Maybe you can help this newcomer. I bought the Milwaukee 6538-21. I now know about the orbital action. There is a lever that says Shoe release lever. I unlocked it and figured the Shoe would be able to come forward and then backwards. It does not seem to release by pulling it out away from the Quik-Lok blade clamp that holds blade. How can I move shoe after I unlock it? Thank you Sir. Mike i.

Why don't all these saws have that straight-orbital switch? I bought a high end Dewalt DSC 380 and was blown away I couldn't make a straight cut, making the saw unsuitable for cutting metal as you stated.

Milwaukee Sawzall M18 CSX. No one knows what the error means when the diode lights up 4 or 6 times, and the machine only starts up for a short time?
