  • After having the deck rip off the bow, Colin posts on Facebook to warn other lagoon owners of what happened, and a few trolls come out of the woodwork which leaves Colin frustrated as he goes on a rant...
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. We found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are now sailing across the Pacific Ocean!!

@@ParlayRevival You should really ignore that handful of idiots. You are showing how crappy these Lagoon cats are built. Hope they learn from this the hard way. What's your opinion on the way Island Spirit constructs their cats, they completely exclude balsa and only use high density foam as core material.

@@ParlayRevival I'm sure that there are sellers that aren't happy with your videos just like when you exposed the problems with the bulkheads. How many Euros did Lagoon saved? What else did they do or not do??? Do your thing and stay true to yourself...that is what matter!

People without knowledge compensate with attitude. Colin is doing the right thing. Simultaneously, there’s no reason to bash on Lagoon any more than the other production boat builders. They all make shortcuts and they all pick cheaper materials. Parlay has racked up a lot of offshore miles. That will show the weaknesses. Pick any other standard production cruising boat, of “average price level”, and you’ll see similar things happening. The price point matters more than durability.
As for balsa, it has some really nice properties, but I’d only use it with vacuum moulding, preferably injection, which seals it up and fills voids. Wood on a boat will get wet, sooner or later. Then it rots. Why have it? Wooden bulkheads are also problems waiting to happen. On our cat, there are no wooden structural elements. All is foam cored fiberglass. Also zero innerliner. I can easily get to every nook and cranny for inspection or repair. Our cat is also reasonably light (40 foot, about 5 tonnes empty and 7 tonnes including all liveaboard stuff) and can take a serious beating, but it’s not a standard production boat.
That’s the crux. The customers are telling the builders what they should build: Maximum comfort and bling for minimum cash. The majority of customers are marina queens, so that works just fine. The boats that get serious use will challenge that envelope and break. The builders have plenty of skills and knowledge to build way better boats, but the customers just don’t want that. Then they have lost their rights to complain. If we buy a closet at IKEA, we know it’s very cheap and probably not very robust, but it’s great value and just what we wanted. If you complain, you’re an idiot.
This is where Colin comes in as an extremely useful help for the boat customers who go further. He’s frustrated sometimes, of course, but he doesn’t whine. He just figures out what needs to be done and then just gets that done. No matter how much suffering it contains. In the meantime his boat is getting better every day. That’s the only right attitude. So, are the various boats on the market well built? Most of them: Hell no! Were they better 50 years ago? Absolutely not! Have a look at the criminally poorly built Pierson that Sailing Uma has. Does that deserve condemnation? Yes, certainly! However, put the blame where it belongs: The customers!
As for credentials, I’ve been sailing for over 50 years, some of it on professional racing multihulls, designed and built some boats and live on a cat too.

Absolutely. Seeing you Dave Lee and Expedition Evans fixing the inexcusable Benetau Group/Lagoon mistakes, turning them into good boats has helped not only people with the problems that were being swept under the carpet but making us sailors better informed. When I was looking at the Hunter I bought, I wanted to avoid a wood core (knowing I'd pay more for a newer boat) and how everything was connected. When I inspected the bilges I looked to see how the frame was attached to the hull. Solidly glass gussets everywhere. I checked what I could of the bulkheads, and looked at the 'furniture' for any signs anything was moving. Solid. And last year when I sailed 7500 nM on a Seawind 1260, because of what I learned watching you guys, I inspected every mm of that boat before we left Vietnam and regularly across the Pacific. I spotted a slight misalignment in the doors... And then saw there was some clothing stuck in it. All good. The Parlay crew, Dave Lee the Panama boat yard guys! and the Evans have educated all of us and raised the standards.

The Nazis were demonically possessed and there was no internal force that could stop them. Only the Positive Health Radiation Paradigm shift can technologically and Sociologically heal the Earth in 60 days. And Jesus spoke: Water Fueled cars and Human decency Socialism and there will be Heaven on Earth. Included in that is the Dharma Divine Christ Quantum Shift, the Greatest Quantum Shift ever known in Human History for Humanities sake it is only a 60 day challenge. everyone with a older lagoon knows exactly what you are talking about with the front bow problem, its just bad construction and planning....keep giving the Lagoon community the information they need as some people wont be aware of this....

I appreciate your help by sharing your experience. I truly enjoyed your ability to do trouble shooting. I do not own a boat (I hope that was right). I have enjoyed your CZcams. Even though I do not sail. I enjoy that you take time to share your trip with your friends. I enjoyed seeing Glenn on boat. I look forward to seeing more of your experience with sail and you trouble shooting a problem that may arise. Be safe and have for me. Ree

Forget about the trolls, they will always be there. I appreciate all your technical tips and any other tip you have for us that have not been where you have been. Perhaps the ones that appreciate your tips are not as vocal as the trolls, but don't think we are not there. I am amazed and impressed by your persistency and dedication to get the boat back alive again, where most of us would have simply walked away.
Keep it going and keep it coming, we appreciate it.

Hi Colin, during my circumnavigation on my 2013 Lagoon450, I circumnavigated the NZ north island and made it across to Picton on the South Island. After much research and discussion with local sailors I decided to tour the South Island by campervan. You are accurately describing the harsh conditions around the South Island. The beatings I took on several occasions circumnavigating the north island was enough to teach me the limits of my boat and crew ( total of 2 including captain) . Watching you coping with the latest bow deck and saildrive failures I get the feeling that going around the South Island may be more than it can handle in spite of the amazing work you and Jamie have done and are doing. A small tip about changing saildrives and correcting the forward / reverse control. I found it easier to turn the gear lever on the saildrive 180 degrees and moving the shifting cable to the other side than making the change on the control station. Either way works as you have proven.
My 450 was a very tired girl by the time I completed my circumnavigation. Looking back, I now know she could not have handled the South Island and she was only three years old when I was in NZ. Just my 50 cents. All the best of success in whatever you decide going forward.

I've watched your posts for some time and enjoy them very much,
One thing I do know when you fix a problem it stays fixed so when you sort out the bow problem and the water ingress you won't get the problem ever again, I suppose you'd better check the opposite hull for the same problem,
Best wishes to all who sail on Parlay 👍👍👍
