Allow me to explain the joys of a good Spice Bag. The Spice Bag was invented in the Sunflower Chinese Takeaway in Templeogue, a south city suburb of Dublin. (note it is never ever ever called spice packet). Chicken balls (chicken in batter) are deep fried first, then in a wok you fry up some onions, sliced bell peppers and hot chilli pepper, add the chicken balls (or chicken strips etc.) and then the chips. Next you add the 'secret' spices which is basically Chinese Five Spice (star anise, sichuan pepper, cloves, cinnamon and fennel) with maybe some ginger powder or one or two additions. The chips, veg, spices and chicken are tossed in a wok until completely coated and then transferred to a bag or box. For it to work you need good quality properly crispy chips and good quality chicken and your lips should tingle and get a little numb from both the chilli and of course from the Sichuan pepper. The heat is a crucial part of the experience. most spice bags fall down on the chicken or on the chips. you don't need dipping sauces but they are an optional extra. I haven't tried San Sab but I can attest to the quality of the original one from Sunflower.
It certainly wasn't invented in dublin you prawn
@@andymccreight3175 Google it. It was. The Carlow story is wrong
@@andymccreight3175
The Irish version was you NUGGET.
I like it with crispy chicken instead of the chicken balls. Curry sauce on the side levels it up imo. Sichuan pepper isnt used much in the five spice powder mix in ireland from what I have seen. It's usually made with black or white The mix in the takeaways is mostly five spice powder, sugar, salt and msg. Some add chilli powder and garlic powder. As of its origin I dont know. I remember some Chinese take away in the late 90s doing 'chinese chips' at lunchtimes for school kids that were a pretty similar product.
@@FerrisFlyer that makes sense, there likely was simpler versions around. Good to have clarity on the spicing, I was going more off my sense of taste. It does seem that Sunflower was first to call it a spicebag. A lot of research has gone into the origin but maybe more is needed.
When you go to a place with A1 first rate food, you get staff that don't have to be defensive, they're actually proud of the food they're selling so you end up getting the best customer service alongside the great food.
Time to bring this masterpiece to the States!!! Thanks my Irish brothers and sisters!!!
The food in Ireland just looks amazing
Won't get better food in any other country and I've been around the world.
@TheNewRelegion lol where do you go, Santa ponsa?
Pity about the poxy fuckin prices.
"Like regular packet, it is also very moreish" - haha, killed me!
That was actually a stroke of comedy genius!
The cashier / young lady at the till was stellar. But the other lady I mean even before you said she was treating you like family I was oh my god this woman has beautiful welcoming skills. This and the Irish pizza video have made me give your channel a way more serious glance. Your growing on me lad. Hahahahaa.
Lovely lady
Everywhere in Ireland has a spice bag now it's one of the best takeaways 😋😘
So good!
Nothing better then a spice bag on your way home after a few beers. 💚🤍🧡🍺🍺🍺can't beat it
Splendid! Enjoy the show immensely, Cheers🍻 from across the pond in Michigan USA.
I love the onions and peppers in spicebags...yum
Spice bag is a collaboration between irish food and Asian it's absolutely delicious and probably fast becoming Irelands number one
Ireland supplied chips, Asia supplied the good stuff!
@Ffinity it's called a irish spice bag get it not just chips
@@Irish780 No, what the Irish added was just chips!
Drove down tonight from Belfast to try this and can say this place is spectacular !!! The chips the chicken the onions the flavour!!! Unbelievable and well worth the trip !!! The staff are simply amazing !!! So welcoming!!
You drove from Belfast for a bag of chips
*FACEPALM*
Fuck Sake John
Was it soggy? It looks amazing but the chips look oily/soggy
Now that’s commitment :)
The Irish have to be the most genuine, warm and friendly race of people in the world.
Irish people are a nationality, not a race.
@Laurence O'Connor Rubbish. It’s enriching the city. Where do you think a Spice Bag came from?
@@IcarianX excuse me we are ancient race of people, a genealogists could easily identify a person as irish
@@markthemill sounds like you don't know the difference between race, ethnicity and nationality.
@@IcarianX race is physical, you can tell us by our genes
What a class review and I love how well received this teams positive and friendly attitude was at the start. Proud of this very Irish but clearly very worldly experience in our capital, I have to try it some time!
Just discovered this channel a little while ago and enjoyed it. To see the creator visiting my city though! Awesome!
First time I ever heard an Irish person call Guinness "the brown stuff"! When it's called " the black stuff".
I`m a Dub and even i never heard Guinness called `the brown stuff`.!
And there was me thinking it was red!
Arthur’s scutter ;)
Glad you tried it, but the inner irish in me quakes with rage when you call it a "packet" XD good vid tho!
🤣🤣🤣 sorry I know its a bag now
It was only a matter of time before matt got on the spice packets😂😂
SPICE BAG, SPICE BAG !
In my opinion a spice bag from a traditional Chinese is nicer it gives more spice and the curry sauce is a lot nicer
Have had some lovely ones from the Chinese, the one in Blackrock across from that pub chain place is nice.
And sometimes they ask spice with chicken, or spice bag with chicken and veg. It has to be with the veg, the little red chillies amongst the onions, peppers etc I'd eat the veg and chips on its own. I've wondered how they cook the veg because it's crispy yet cooked.
Very true, I worked in a Thai restaurant and we copied the Chinese to make a Thai version years ago and now it’s everywhere, but it’s actually a bit different in San sab, it’s much sweeter and spicy then the Chinese. The best one around is lemon tree for Chinese and San sab for Thai
Also a few companies make the spices in sachets you can buy in the shops… sometimes it’s fun to make your own spice bag at home
Will have to pop in when I'm over in Ireland next year.
brilliant review 🤣 absolutely loving your videos 🔥
Is it just me or did the video edit make it look like Matt was cornering that lady coming out of the toilet shouting he wanted a spice packet!😆
Thanks for the reviews around Dublin it nice to find these hidden gems would love to see u come west I love to see you do some more Irish chippers ere there is some class places home made chips home made vinegars all that type of stuff also munch box’s Are class 👍
Great content - Thank you 👍👍
My mouth is watering watching him eat a irish spice bag, I love them 😂❤
Love your food reviews.
SPICE BAG!!!!!! They are unreal!
Great fun show!! 😃
Matt and his foodgasms!
Should try a spice box next , it's the same flavours but has pork ribs, chicken balls , wings , chips and crispy chicken served in a pizza box .
We tend to call that a 'munchie box' though ain't gonna care too much about nomenclature, if the grub be good
Big time fan love your content bro 👍
Their very popular here in Dublin. Spice bag can't go wrong
I love these! The only complaint I have is that he doesn't find a comfy table to lay it all out and enjoy himself properly! Ha. To each, his own! 😁
Just tried this because of your recommendation. Didn’t disappoint!!
You have to try a Off The Wall at Cinelli’s in Dublin 🙌
We have spice bags in london but nowhere near as good as that!
Typical Brit, you were told countless times it's called a spice bag but refused to be corrected. Love the show! 🤣
Nothing like the homeland 🇮🇪good job lads
We are coming back soon 🙌🏻
@@FoodReviewClubUK good man yourself
Is it legal in England
I tried a spice bag in Stoke. Was nothing like that though fella!
Spice bags originally from Ireland with chiense spices
That looks like food straight out of heaven. They should introduce the spice bag to The States. I’m sure many Americans will love it.
Nice 1 matt I know where I'm going tonight, nice 1 pal
Great to see you at lunch
Have not tried a spice bag in Drummer but will go next time I home there 👍
Knew what they were doing with the title 🤣
what do you do with your left overs? ;)
Brilliant review.
Thanks Johnny
Excellent video's thank you. I'm kinda disappointed that the restaurant's know you're coming. I presumed they were 'off the cuff' visits. I thought that was the whole point?
How did they know???
They probably need permission on film on the premises.
I got that family vibe
Check out chicken hut In limerick, apparently they have the original KFC chicken recipe, for reasons I can't remember...
So Chopsuey (stirfry veggies) mixed with McDonalds fries and chicken nuggets and topped with spicy curry sauce.
if that was your, um, takeaway, i weep
I need to find an excuse to visit city centre and try that place. I saw the video on Summer Inn in the city and made a comment regarding Foo Lok in Dublin 15 being one of the best ( local chinese in same ownership for 30+ years)
Since then, Summer Inn have taken over a shop that's about the same 4 minute walk away, and I'm honestly unable to say which is better. I'll still tend towards Foo Lok as the portions are larger for the same price, but both are really good with special requests like ' very very much extra spicy' and 'extra veg' ( obviously i know will pay a little more)
The San Sab looks to differ a bit, those red bell peppers are usually green bell peppers anywhere i've had it, and it looked like a much lower amount of chicken, but when talking about a bag of food at 8.50€ , gotta love value
Food looks good, but it does seem ironic that there is an 'Eat Healthy' sign behind Matt!
Sign really has no place at any take away ever lol
Just caught vids. I am from Dublin, but you are great fun. You would be right at home in Ireland.
Thank you so much!
So when your in England And your in a chipper/chippy do you ask for a packed of chips or bag of chips , cause it sounds wrong calling it a packed
No he asked for a packet.
Xian Street Food do the best spice bag hands down!
if was said about 4 years ago .. maybe, but that chain had simply plummeted in quality : (
Best spice bag is from the roundabout Chinese in walkinstown
The mandem tried a spicebag. Shits all over salt and pepper UK stuff if prepped well. You need to try a spicebag with a good satay (peanut based) sauce. Food of the gods.
Couldn't resist it could you. Had to get a dig in 😂
Satay is my favourite!!! I eat it with everything! Best with chicken and fried noodles. Can’t go wrong!!!
Should review forrest banks spice bags.
In arkansas we have walking taco in a bag
salt and pepper chips have you not been to the north west ???
Subs are starting to take off
Ive
Noticed last few week 🚀
You guys are making me hungry with those fries and chicken. We don't have spice bags here. But, you can order a version of it in any Chinese joint here in US if you ask for it.
One thing I'll say, if a place only sticks to serving what is on the menu,, it's likely to not be worth re-visiting. ( yes i know that asking for something silly is not applicable)
He reminds me of Smithy from Gavin and Stacy.
Spice bag never a spice packet. Chans in Santry is pretty amazing. They do a chicken balls version which is amazing.
Coke Zero always make me laugh
Tastes exactly regular coke
@@AlainnCorcaighno it doesn’t lol
LOVE
Looks lovely 🍷⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍👍👍👍👍
Bag, packet…same thing 😂
Looks good
Great place Dublin
Amazing!
Welcome to Ireland mate we love our food the Irish are the Indians of flavour in Europe 😂
Anyone know how many times Matt said the word ‘packet’😂
He likes a bit of sniff he does
@@shredz3327 A bitta Harry me owl China
It got annoying after the 80th time! SPICE BAG FFS!
Doesn't look like the last spice bag I had, doesn't look like it had the same effect either 🤷♂️🤣
Ur videos are deadly 👍👍👍👊
Big up ❤️
Why is Connor MC Gregor not there Screaming and yelling at the people and dissing everyone
He is a representative of Irish friendliness or the Gipsy King himself AS well
Lovely people great good 💯❤☘😁👌🏻
Like regular packet 😂
Come to Liverpool guys! Nightcrawler Pizza on Slater street is a must
"Thought you meant heroin' 🤣 Great review, and food did look good - but surely will only be frozen chips and frozen chicken pieces from Asian supermarket with fresh veg and flavouring? Does it deserve such a high score?
Not at all actually. They pride themselves on daily fresh produce prepped in store!
It doesnt really work with real chips. The blandness of the frozen chips helps carry the flavour of the wok and salt ad pepper mix with out overpowering. The chicken is made in house there as well I believe. It's a solid junkfood dish imo. Unique flavours.
Great work 👏
A food version of ste howson
Had this here all around Glasgow and Scotland for about ten years. It's called a Salt & Chili Munchie Box here, because it comes in a pizza box rather than a bag.
We have the Munchie box. It's just a bigger version. And it's been around for more than 10 years
Lol😅 no it's different much different I tasted your munch box in Scotland
Some parts of Ireland (like where I am in Cork City) also have the Munchie Box that comes in the pizza box. Artery-clogging goodness.....
So it is just Salt and Pepper Chicken & Chips? Have I got that right?
Nope it's way better and way more ingredients
@@dkinclonberne What other ingredients are used apart from regular salt and pepper chinese seasoning? Onion, Spring Onion, Pepper, Chilli and chinese 5 spice seasoning...
Going straight to the comments to see all the Irish saying spice BAG not packet! 😅😅😅😅
Nice 👌👌👌👌👌👌
Wasn’t the type of spice bag I thought you meant 😂
Please go best kebab sligo town you will love it i want to see your rate
Its just salt and pepper chips and chicken pieces in a bag right? sounds bangin though
It's the stirfried veg and the mix of spices, sugar and MSG that really makes it though. It's not just salt pepper and chicken.
It's also chillie flakes shredded chicken it's beautiful and family cheep .
Only let down is its gotten all soggy from steam, defeats the purpose of crispy chicken a d chips. As so I've heard its meant to be.
That little side look at 6:59 says it all ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Try Pablo Picantes Mexican burritos and do beshoffs brothers in howth before yeah leave mate be shame not to
Like regular packet 😂😂😂
spice bags are the dogs bollix … wash it down with a cold beer 🍺
I love packet
I thought you meant Heroin 😂😂😂
So it's salt n pepper chicken and chips in a bag then
CHILLI AND CURRY WATER
So basically salt and pepper chips
