Do These Paints "Spark Joy?" Reviewing ALL Kristy Rice Paintcrush Supplies!!!

  • Update: Kristy reached out to me to say that I must have received a brush with a varnish defect and to say if anyone receives a defective product all they have to do is email her at hello@kristyrice.com for a replacement. She also said that the packaging on the watercolor tin was old and the pigment info is on the new boxes. The pigment info on the box is a list of pigments with no indication of what pigments are in each color.
Today we are taking a look at all of the Paintcrush art supplies designed by fellow CZcamsr Kristy Rice. These products were sent to me for review. (affiliate links used)
    Kristy Rice Watercolors: amzn.to/3RSZHH5
    Water pot: amzn.to/3NWGDGK
    Brush set 1: amzn.to/3SaPJSN
    Brush set 2: amzn.to/3Hwt91b
    White pen: amzn.to/48KiRpI
    Black pen: amzn.to/47s0epw
    Empty palettes:
    24 pans ($21) -

    kristyrice.com/products/the-r...
    kristyrice.com/products/the-r...
    12 pan ($16) - kristyrice.com/products/the-r...
    48 pan ($26) - kristyrice.com/products/the-r...
These products are fun and whimsical. The packaging is beautiful and inspiring. The brushes all have encouraging sayings printed on them to help users get over the fear of painting. These supplies are just plain fun and Kristy's Charming CZcams personality can guide you through using them as well. I think if you are buying these products you are doing so because you are a fan of Kristy and want to support the work she does, also the tins and brushes are so pretty. I also must note that while I will be honest in this review I must consider that Kristy is an independent artist designing these products herself without the buying power of a large company behind her so her prices will be higher than other comparable products which in my opinion is fair because it is not stock white label products although she has hired out the manufacturing.
    The brushes:
These were a dream to use, the printing on the barrels was crisp and perfect. The colors are unique and beautiful and most importantly they were easy to use and handled like a dream. I had the paint on one brush crack but other than that they were excellent and well priced. The travel brush is excellent, the size is great, it's beautiful and fairly priced.
    The watercolors:
The tin is gorgeous, the edges are finished and not sharp and the color selection was unexpected, quirky yet very usable. I find using another artist's color palette to be a fun way to break out of a rut (which it did for me, thanks Kristy!) The paint itself is not what I would call professional quality, it is very similar to the budget Meeden and Arteza half pans but I will say most of the colors were unique so if you have those other sets and love them and want more you will like them. I think the majority of the cost for these paints is in the custom-printed tin.. There is no pigment info available for this set but it says that it is "dye boosted" meaning a mix of pigments and dyes for color saturation. The box claims a lightfast rating of 7 on all colors except the flourencents but without knowing the pigment info and seeing the pastel shades I would take that with a grain of salt. I would recommend these for fun, but not longevity. That said if you just want the tin Kristy does offer 24 half-pan empty tins with her designs but they are out of stock at the moment.
    The silicone paint pot:
I always use 2 jars when painting so I love the idea of this. It is compact, works weak, and can easily be stored away for travel. I have never seen a silicone-divided dish before, it is unique and I think that factors into the price. It is light in color and stains. It is also light in weight and would be good for hiking out to paint.
    The coloring book:
I had no trouble painting in this coloring book with Kristie's paints. I would rate the paper as cardstock more than watercolor paper but as long as you are gentle with the paper it will be fine. The pages are thick and printed on one side. I bet it would work well for most art media too.
Bottom line: These products are made for "FUN" art, to inspire you to paint and take the fear out of it and bring in the joy, and for that, I think they do a wonderful job.

Wow, I was not expecting a passionate response to this video review. Let me clarify a few things.
First, the word professional as it applies to watercolor paint, your view might be different and that is OK but I review all paints against the same standard, and what you are getting here is an unbiased review. To me, a Professional paint has ASTM lightfastness ratings, or lightfastness tests done by an independent entity. Not all professional watercolors are lightfast but they will tell us if they are so we as artists can make the best choices for our needs. For instance, if you are painting something to hang on a wall your needs are different than painting something to be reproduced. Professional paints have pigment code that corresponds with the individual colors. Kristy now has a list of pigment codes on the package but does not identify what pigments are in what colors, and some codes are not used in professional paint. Also when I consider a paint being professional it is made by the company selling it in most cases. Winsor & Newton makes their own Professional watercolors but outsources the student grade line. Davinci makes their professional watercolors and collabs with art influencers so you know what you are getting, they also make American Journey for Cheap Joes, so it is easy to trace the source and know what you are getting. When products are outsourced to factories in China there is a lot of murkiness. Kristy herself mentioned a language barrier between her and the paint factory in her Instagram stories yesterday. Even with the best intentions these factories can be putting things in the paint you are unaware of. There was also a bit of scaleyness in some colors, I have never seen that in other paints I would call professional. I have evaluated hundreds of paints. I have experience in this. When we are talking about paints made in China a few factories are making all the paint. I can't say for certain who makes her paint but I will say that they feel identical to the Arteza half pans, review here: czcams.com/video/czEqPDzdUZg/video.htmlsi=w_ID-1LZ7n0-21qW (note Arteza rated these as "premium" and I called them out for it too, I am consistent.) These also feel the same as the old Meeden half pans, review here: czcams.com/video/GPpptiurh1U/video.htmlsi=Bk5aWhGUELym9zl7 If you truly want more info about the quality of the paint check those reviews out as well.
In defense of Kristy, she defines the term Professional differently than I do. We have different opinions and that's OK.
Secondly, I liked her products overall, I don't know what everyone is so upset about. If you were mad, did you watch the whole review? And have you ever watched any of my previous reviews? I have been accused of being mean, hateful, and jealous in the comments. I do not believe that I am any of those things. I am brand agnostic and this was a tough review to do because I like Kristy but I owe it to my viewers to be consistent in my assessment. You may not agree with me but my goal is for you to have the facts before you buy it. I gain nothing (except hopefully the trust of my viewers) by posting something critical. CZcams is full of glowing reviews of every product imaginable. Feel free to watch those.

Wow, I did watch the whole review and I have to say, having watched a great many of your reviews, I come to you for information because you are always transparent and provide an honest opinion, I have found to be spot on when I also try the item being reviewed. These paints are no exception. You provided your honest opinion based on a vast knowledge and use of other watercolor brands and I am not sure why (other than creator loyalty) anyone could be pushing back. Your review was kind and considerate to the fact this was a fellow CZcamsr's product. Sometimes I think people forget it is ok to disagree or have different opinions. Thank you for holding true to your honest reviews. I have never felt, even when you have said a company sent something to you that the review I was seeing had been biased by that. This is something I admire and why I trust your product reviews. I agree with how you see paints qualifying as "professional" grade and also agree it is OK if Kristy sees it differently. Overall I thought you did give a positive review with a caveat about the paints, but never did you say they were awful or that someone shouldn't use them. They have a place and a market and getting them to support the creator who worked so hard producing the palette is a great thing and if you go into the purchase knowing these are not competing with your Legacy professional brands, not only will you not be disappointed, you might just have fun and find joy using them. That is what I took away from your review. I do have these paints, I have tried them, and I think you were fair and honest. Thanks for giving us your honest unbiased opinion, even if it wasn't what some people wanted to hear.

It’s silly all the hate. I watch Kristy heavily, and she is the first to say that she’s not into all the pigment science, paint chemistry, or any of the technical knowledge. She’s into sparking joy, and she’s so good at it. So is Lindsay!

You were kind, respectful, and I felt you hit the points I found to be true in my use of these joyful paints. I prefer daniel smith and Holbein tbh. But for a fun painting to stretch and enjoy, these are great. 😊 people who are mean and defensive tend to be that way in their life and they look for ways to vent. I’m sorry you experienced that. I watched the entire review & have been subbed to Lindsay for at least a decade. She was thorough & polite, even overly kind. She feels an obligation to look out for us when she reviews things because she knows we rely on her (frugal is in the channel name for heaven's sake) opinion.
It seems that the fans of Kristy Rice have some overlap with mental health & do not mean that in a bad way. It seems she has deeply connected to a tender viewer base & Lindsay's review was mistake as some kind of personal attack by an overly defensive fan base.
Lindsay was doing right by her viewers. A lot of us are on tight budgets. I can't believe she even has to defend the definition of professional grade paint. That's just silly. If you hired a professional studio band to record music & instead got 3rd year students you would be rightfully perturbed. If all she could could manage was student grade that's fine as long as you're being transparent about it. Trying to gaslight the entire art community because the maker is "such a nice person" is absurd. If she was so nice she would squash the beef & keep her fans from coming after Lindsay for just doing her job & being honest.
Geesh. I'm sorry Lindsay. You must feel like you're taking crazy pills. It's not you. It's them. This is whole thing is so unnecessary. Maybe a scientist can write a paper on when para-social relationships go wrong 😅
I hope your doing well & this hasn't impacted your mental health too much. A lot of the bad comments were trying to excuse their behavior by saying how much they felt connected to Kristy. Well I feel connected to you as well Lindsay. You never made me feel like I had to be anything but willing to try. You are unpretentious & unafraid to show us when it goes wrong. It made me feel like not giving up on art entirely even though my disability is rapidly taking my hands away. I still try. It won't ever be like it was. But it still feels good to try. Thank you for that. You've been my companion on many lonely endeavors in my art journal & I'm grateful you put yourself out there.
    Hugs ❤❤❤

All this drama and emotion over what is pretty much a standard and not all that harsh art supply review is absurd to the point of being embarassing. Someone judging the quality of a product has nothing whatsoever to do with what a wonderful person fans think the business person behind said product is, niche philosophies on the word "professional" and personal feelings being hurt.
It all comes off very unprofessional.
The general public (not just limited to fans) buys products with certain expectations, especially in comparison to other similarly-priced brands using that same designation. Free-spirited assertions on words and personal associations with products have no place in standardized reviews that are supposed to be as objective as possible and cater to the general public, not doting fans.
Tbh I watch and like both channels but all this impassioned protest hidden behind what frankly seems like toxic positivity as a defense against critique is vaguely off-putting. Reading the comment section on KR's live and attempting to listen to the live myself felt like wandering through a twilight zone disguised in sparkles. Folks would do well separating business from emotion and product from personality, because this whole episode was the most needless and overdramatized hullabaloo ever.

I was going to say that those paints seem like a great gift-but I wouldn’t want to give my money to someone who professes joy and kindness, but can’t handle an honest review, even if it’s for someone else. I was so confused by the comments, did some scrolling, and was appalled to find Kristy in your comments section, not making her own remarks, but responding to replies to someone else’s comment. That just feels slimy to me. I think you, Lindsay, have handled this with grace, but I find Kristy’s behavior shady and uncalled for. If she wanted a promotion, she should’ve paid for one; if she wanted a positive review, she should’ve tweaked her claims about her paints (there’s nothing wrong with having student-grade paints, especially when her whole brand is about having fun and not being afraid to make art). She picked a fight, and while it’s been good of you not to take the bait, I think she’s ultimately alienated a lot of potential customers. I’ve personally been interested in those brushes for a year at least, but I will not be purchasing anything from her brand for the foreseeable future.

@@veryberry39it's because she values people's opinions, and actually people help each other out in her comment sections, too. She never picked a fight, she said Lindsay was honest and she accepted everything that was said, no problems at all. She asked permission to answer those questions or comments that are claiming false accusations against her. She likes honesty and loves that people find joy in painting. If you don't like joy, I will pray for you. Creating should always be joyful, otherwise it's just work. I'm so glad Kristy is here, because she sparked my artistic self back into being, and has for many people. I'm sorry you see her as such a bad person. The problem she, I, and others have are with the haters, who would cancel her, called her a liar, and slander her business because they had a loose ferrul on a brush, or sone other nonsense. @treetreewalton35 Před 6 měsíci +101

Hi Lindsey, thank you so much for your honest review. It's greatly appreciated.
Yesterday when I watched Kristy's live, one thing that stood out to me was Kristy stated that she is her product. She also said that when someone speaks ill of her product, it's speaking ill of her.
Kristy also mentioned that she is against words like professional and its meaning in the art community.
Therefore when ppl called her paints "unprofessional" I think she and her viewers interpreted it as ppl calling her an unprofessional artist. Idk if a lot of her viewers understand that the term "professional" is used in the art community to distinguish artist grade products from craft/ children art supplies.
Many artists/crafters like myself get extremely frustrated when a new unknown product is marketed as professional and doesn't contain certain attributes that hold up to other professional paint. Like not having pigment info, LF rating, ASTM info, etc
Unfortunately today many companies especially on Amazon, all use the same words to describe their art supplies. From kid's craft paints to artists grade paints they all use words like: professional, high-quality, lightfast, washable, watersoluble, highly pigmented.
With that being said shopping for new art supplies can be very confusing for artists, hobbyists and crafters therefore they look towards CZcamsrs for product reviews.
I don't think it is wrong to say that the paints are not professional (artists quality). I also don't see anything wrong with professional artists using unprofessional (student grade) supplies in their work. I do think that is important to be honest when selling products so is not misleading to the consumer.
I think a lot of people got frustrated with Kristy because they felt like she was not being honest when marketing her product. It's not my place to say whether she was or not being honest however being an art supply consumer, I do understand the frustration of the viewers.
I disagree with Kristy when she said that her product is an extension of her brand. People buy her product because of her brand as a CZcams artist. I hope this video opens more of a discussion about how to market and describe art supplies on the market. I wish Kristy the best with her products. I absolutely love her palette design and am looking forward to getting one when they're back in stock.

I always appreciate your thoroughness, Lindsay! I think your review is an honest and fair opinion. When I buy "professional" watercolor paints, I expect the quality and performance of what most call legacy brands. I own several brands of handmade paints, too, and although they are labeled as "professional or artist grade," they just don't perform like professional watercolors. While I haven't tried Kristy's products, I would gladly buy her empty tins, but the colors of her paints just aren't for me. You produced a fair review, so don't let the few rude comments make you second guess your integrity!

    Very fair and honest review
Just my view point: I’m specifically referencing the claim of “professional paints” & would like to state that there is global standard practices which are adhered to when paint manufacturers make marketing claims and labels of their products as professional quality artists grade paints. This is what consumers rely on when purchasing products which claim to be professional grade paints. As a business owner it is important to acknowledge how this will impact consumer behavior. I understand that there are various differential marketing techniques used in business however being transparent with your customers on how this represents your product is a good building block to ensure consumer confidence and brand credibility

College prof here: given the limited funds amateurs or beginners have for painting, ask yourself if it will be more fun looking at a cute tin or painting with luscious, better quality paint. Did you know WN Cotmans are lightfast and made with professional pigments that are not expensive? Rosa Gallery paints cost less than the KR set, and they are actually lightfast, lusciously pigmented, pro grade WC’s.
Paul Rubens comes in an adorable pink tin, and Meilang student paint gives you 24 pans for $16-20, in a cute turquoise tin.
I’ve seen Lindsay’s past reviews of Arteza and Meeden pan WC’s, and she has repeatedly pointed out the many frustrations of working with them, clearly recommending that her viewers avoid them.
Lindsay shows that these KR paints are equivalent in quality to Arteza and Meeden, but critiques the KR paints more gently, because she is being kind hearted about it. I think she’s bending over backwards to avoid being hurtful, when the product is questionably priced and advertised. I’ve just seen the pigment list of the KR paints and they are cheap, non-lightfast pigments common in student or lower quality paint sets.
Labeling obviously student grade paints as “professional,” or saying a watercolor book has “watercolor paper” in it when it doesn’t, and then charging trusting viewers a lot of money for cute packaging, is questionable. A lot of us are tired of inflated or misleading product descriptions. If you feel you want to support KR, go ahead and joyfully do so, but only now are you more correctly informed.
I think Lindsay does a very good job of walking this tight rope of a review, balancing the pluses and minuses. Please do not label her as jealous or unfair.

    • @sanctityjohnson289
      @sanctityjohnson289 Před 6 měsíci +24

Exactly. Labeling these paints professional or professional grade is incredibly misleading, and abusing the term. Someone curating their own set of colors with Daniel Smith, for example, that is professional. To me, professional means that you can sell high quality artwork with these paints and they would last beyond a couple of months when displayed. (I personally will not buy artwork that will fade or isn't light fast. I don't have that kind of disposable income.) Which would include light-fast ratings and pigment information, pigment characteristics etc. Seems odd that there's so much controversy over this when it is pretty clear. I think perhaps the term "professional grade" isn't as protected as it should be. Seems some overly sensitive or unhinged, super fans take things too personally, making inappropriate comments. I hope this will not deter Lindsay to continue to make honest reviews. Because they are few and far between these days, and I trust her evaluation and her in depth knowledge (I find the science and story behind pigments, paints, colors fascinating! And it seems like Lindsay is one of the few that understands the components of paints and pigments, etc. and teaches that in her videos! Read: The Secret Lives of Color by Kassia St Clair)

I am a first-hand eye witness to language barriers ... I truly think there's was a language barrier here. I don't think the Asian language defines professional, the same as we do. For example, Shinhan has a product line that they call professional ...yet their PWC line is what we Americans would deem professional. It's very unfortunate for Kristy, because she could have been led down the wrong path by the developer/manufacturer... they after all were selling HER on an idea, THEY were in for a profit as well. And as she admits, she's not a pigment geek, she may not have cared at the time.

Why I’m so curious about the review is not that I am a fan and offended. It just really didn’t make sense to me personally. I use the pink Paul Ruben’s as my travel kit. I play with Cotman and prima and daeler rowney and a few other student grade brands.
Kristys paints feel way nicer to me. They are creamy like many of my professional sets and they look good. so I was surprised to see the review go the way it did. I actually watch Lindsay far more. I rarely watch Kristy. Love her but prefer Lindsay’s style. But even I am getting rude comments just because I am asking questions. Trying to make sense of it. I watched the review yesterday before the live today from her. I thought you did a fair review and ended up on a good note saying to buy her pretty supplies because they are fun, exactly as her brand says. Clearly they are not professional since they don’t have pigments and other important information must of us care about when it comes to professional watercolor. I even added the cute bucket and paintbrushes to my Amazon cart because of you. What I didn’t expect was the live she did today. I understand her wanting to align her brand for fun and joy, and that she has a different meaning for professional than what we usually think about. That’s fair and I understand but for some of us it’s kind of an important part to trust the paints. Still, I liked the message behind her channel and some of the cute supplies.
Yet the live left me with more questions and a bad taste in my mouth. I know she kept saying it wasn’t about you but comments on the video. I was ready to buy because of your review but the live and her words made me question any future buys from her brand. Either way, great review aside from the weird drama it caused for some unknown reason 😅

The live left me feeling pretty uncomfortable. Despite saying she had no problems with the review, little digs kept popping up. Things like that people should only use Arches paper to review her paints as "I *know* you have Arches" yet not using Arches herself to do her swatches and including what looks like cardstock in with the palette for swatching. The insistence that reviewers should contact her before publishing reviews if there was something they didn't like. That's something you can request if you are paying someone to do a review, it's not normal to demand that of people you don't have a contract with.
The "dye boosted" claim on the packaging was a problem because she says it's not true. Ok, well the paints do look like they have dyes in them but if I take her on her word, that means she signed off on the packaging without checking it properly. Either that or there's been a miscommunication and the paint company did use dyes but Kristy thought they hadn't. It all seems very jumbled and doesn't leave me with any confidence that Kristy actually knows for sure what the ingredients in her paints are. They're lovely colours and I'm sure are fun to paint with but you can't really argue about what is in your paints when everything is so unclear and your own packaging disagrees with you.
I had wanted to buy the palette originally but postage was too high to the UK but now I'm glad I didn't and it wasn't this review that makes me glad I didn't, it was Kristy's live.

@@minkg8178I’m truly sorry if you thought my live was full of any digs towards anyone. Admittedly I have an edgy sense of humor and affect when I’m live and it knowingly rubs some folks the wrong way. While live earlier this week I felt very at ease about half way in because I was primarily with my community and so I relaxed as the session evolved.
It’s also important for me to say this: I mentioned several times in the live after being pushed to what felt like signing my name in blood 😂, that noo, I suppose🤷🏻‍♀️I ultimately don’t know exactly what my manufacturer puts in my paints despite all of the 3rd party testing they’ve done and provided me proof of over the last 2 + years.
My paints are made in another country where regulations and standards are different than ours in the US. I have developed a solid working relationship with my manufacturer that hasn’t been without bumps but I trust them in good faith. I compared all this jovially to “well we don’t know what’s in our food in the US so…!”.
I’ve been continually pressed and pressed for strict, perfect, guaranteed ingredient lists for the last two years by a very small but very loud minority and it honestly is exhausting.
Don’t buy the paints, don’t like me, buy the paints, use them and return them because YES you can do that!! I take the hit so folks don’t get stuck with the product!
So yes in my live I made some jokes that some might consider off putting because I have done all I can to make people comfortable with what I’ve created but when it’s not enough, I throw my hands up and decide to be silly here and there to cope :)
And to the Arches comment… I did call to everyone’s attention that I was using Academy which my audience knows I historically compare favorably to Arches.

Lindsay once again you have demonstrated why I continue to watch your content. I've been following your channel since the early days of your channel. In all that time you've never failed to be objective and to demonstrate integrity, both of which I highly value.
Keep in mind that the complainers have likely just watched this single review and are not familiar with your extensive work and extensive experience working with and reviewing different media.
For your regular viewers this is just another objective review.
For me personally the thing I care about the most is opacity. I'm not a professional painter and don't care about light fastness. I do really care about chalkiness and opacity. For me personally they interfere with my enjoyment of watercolors. You clearly demonstrated the opacity of this product.
The fact that all your water color reviews are consistent in how they address opacity, light fastness and pigment of the product you are reviewing let's me know that I can trust your objectivity.
This is just a blip in the big scheme of things. I'm especially happy that the pressure of reviewing a popular fellow CZcamsr did not change your objectivity one iota.

For a beginner who wants to paint along with Kristy, the colors she chose are exciting, much more interesting than the usual student quality fieldbox of 12. Plus she has so many videos using them that it's worthwhile to many her audience.

And if you’ve never personally try to paint then how would you know that they garnished or that they’re chalky I have them and they are definitely not choky. They’re easy to re-wet and I’m nice and smooth And quite beautiful not to mention they come in a specialised tent with Rosegold holding the half pants in place you have to take all that in when you’re factoring in price. The other brands are huge brands that have a lot of money behind them and can stand to sell at a loss if they wanted tothey also come with plain ordinary colours and plain watercolour tins with no artist, curating the palate specifically and creating colours of their own.

@R4CHEL__ well Arteza is famous for switching factories and formulas (do you remember pencil-gate a couple years ago?) So my older formula may be different to what is sold today. It's like musical chairs with some of the big budget brands on Amazon and the factories they use! That's why I have to caveat my budget supply reviews with "this is the date and price, read most recent reviews if you are buying this year's from now" it's crazy! It could be that factory raised their price and Arteza jumped ship for something cheaper. I have no idea.

If I’m buying a premade palette that’s not from say like Schminke, W&N etc. etc., I wouldn’t be buying it to sell art with. Sketchbook and fun only stuff. But even high quality brands distinguish their paints from professional to student grade - and this would be in my mind the “student”, especially if it’s similar to Arteza.
I appreciate that you mention that and were very thorough and thoughtful of her products in your review.

I also learnt how to tell when people were trying to take that right away from me and the ways they might try to manipulate me into doing what they wanted.

I checked out Becca Hillburn, and appreciated the time she put into her reviews. Thanks for the poster that recommended her, as comments can really help others. We can all learn from each other!
Sadly, I was dismayed by the amount of negativity and the wasted time that the comments generated. It isn't something generally seen in the art world, as artists are more interested int he art than personalities. (Although I could be painting instead of writing this, so mea culpa.) If one reviewed a company's products, they are not lambasted with nasty comments, as that is a faceless organization. It seems as if some respondents are confusing an unfavorable personal opinion to an attack on the "person behind the product". Consumer Reports and similar sites that review products report the pros and the cons. If Lindsay (or any other YT reviewer) incessantly reported "everything is awesome", there would be no point in making the video. Her "job" is to give her honest opinion, pros and cons.
We are indeed fortunate to have too much choice in art supplies!

      Oh gosh, thank you!
It's one thing to support an artist and their art, it's another to be willing to metaphorically die protecting their products. I am grateful to anyone who buys my comics and enjoys them, but I don't expect anyone to tip at windmills on my behalf. My reviews are based on my own struggles finding art supplies I loved and the appreciation I felt towards others who pointed me in a good direction.
I love Lindsay's reviews and feel she can find kindness when I sometimes cannot, and we speak to different audiences, so I love hearing her thoughts!

@@Nattosoup Becca, thanks ever so much for your gracious reply. If one has already formed an opinion prior to using a product based on fondness for the creator, that really is not an objective opinion. If the reason I am buying ANY product is the name behind it, to me that is not valid.

The neutral approach one must take to reviewing any product is for the benefit of all. Personally, I don't buy artist branded products, as I usually can find better quality elsewhere. That was the first watercolor experience I had. I was devastated because the paper pilled on everything I tried to paint. I had no idea. What I was doing, just reading the instructions in the book…. The paint I had was from TJ Max, I’m sure it was probably student grade and not the greatest quality. I think it was Meeden but idk… I actually stopped watching Kristy’s videos because I was discouraged from the experience I had. I haven’t gone back, I didn’t unsubscribe though.

There seems to be some confusion over what is termed "professional" or "artist quality" paint. It is a consensus agreed upon over many years by many people. There's no "disagreement" between Lindsay and Kristy on what professional artist paints are. Lindsay is stating a commonly agreed upon truth in the watercolor community. It refers to pigment quality and concentration, lightfastness, ease of rewetting and several other very concrete qualities. In my mind, this paint is immediately disqualified because it states on the box that it uses dyes in addition to pigments--that means the paintings will not retain their original colors over time. A truly professional artist would not sell paintings that will not last for the consumer.
That said, there is ABSOLUTELY a place for beautiful paints that spark creative joy, that are fun to play with! Of all of the people who paint with watercolor, very few will be put up in galleries or be sold to other people. And if one doesn't care about the legacy of one's paintings--whether great-grandchildren will enjoy them to the same degree--then it simply doesn't matter that they are professional artist quality. In that case, what matters is whether they are fun and easy to use. And it seems to me that these are. The disconnect here has come from the fact that, in general, Kristy's followers are not pigment nerds like Lindsay's followers are. That's not bad--not everyone has the bandwidth for that breadth of knowledge. It's simply a cultural difference. And that is what has led to this misunderstanding. It's a shame they brought their pitchforks to Lindsay's channel. That said, it's generally advised for professionals to refrain from publicly commenting on, or even mentioning, reviews of their work. I understand Rice's feelings and reaction and how hard it probably was to keep that to herself, but in my opinion, she really should have. It's a hard lesson to learn.

Please Note: REVIEWS ARE FOR CONSUMERS. My personal experience with a product or my opinion of that product and it's quality have nothing to do with the creator's feelings.
A few months back, I commented on a few videos concerning this palette. On one of kristy's videos where she talks about her palette, I commented that these paints were white labeled and were NOT professional grade like the description indicates (cheap paint, no pigment info and no lightfast ratings).
I also replied to other comments who were asking questions about the quality of the paint. I was very polite and talked about the white labeling process while giving my opinion. I went back 2 weeks later and my comments and replies were deleted. I was irked, so I check the comments I left on other videos reviewing Kristy's palette and many of them had also deleted my comments. It just felt like any opinion that was not in favor of this product got the comment scrubbed. When I look to reviews for whether or not I want to buy a product, I expect those reviews to be honest and untouched. Why even have reviews if you're going to edit/delete a portion up front. For me, that is lying and makes me weary of creators and companies who practice this. I'm sure Kristy is a lovely person but I did not appreciate being sensored when I said nothing out of pocket, inappropriate, or rude.

I think it's had for many reviewers to be unbiased. Maybe they are afraid if upsetting a CZcamsr that is larger than Tham and worry that there will be backlash from the bigger channels fans or they got the product for free and feel bad giving a poor review and there is the insidious reason that some creators would rather earn affiliate commission than be honest.
Kristy sent me these products with the full understanding that I would be honest, and she was very gracious about the review. I have upset a couple of her fans (their may be more to come) but I feel I was respectful and honest. I will answer any questions I can and leave comments up as long as they are not hateful. Yeah some people take these things personally and i liked your review. I saw the traffic and comments on Kristy's channel first and didn't understand all the comments and message from Kristy on the community tab as if she got a horrible review. I like Kristy and you were the first art CZcamsr I watched when I got back into painting and you both have your own view on painting and art. I love how well rounded and proficient your art skills are with different media. I think your review was good, it was thorough and it was very fair as it gave a review for the people that may or may not like it and why. There has to be the freedom to be honest about products being reviewed and there are not enough honest product reviewers out there. I always watch your product reviews and I usually agree with you, but not always and that's fine. People do have very unhealthy parasocial relationships and people need to remember that their favourite CZcamsrs, Tiktokers and instagrammers can have differences in opinion and that is normal. Your review was kind, it was thorough and it comes from a vast wealth of knowledge and experience with paint medias. CZcamsrs and artists should expect that there will be differing reviews of their products, unless they are expecting paid, less honest reviews. I'm sorry you have had all this hate and you definitely don't deserve it.
I hope people go outside into the world a bit more and spend less time obsessing over things like this. I hope you have a less drama filled week next week.

@@attorneycarissa She did make it sound like everyone was over here badmouthing her when that was not the case at all. So then they run over here to defend her and obviously don't even watch the review because if they did they'd have seen that Lindsay was in no way mean or even overly critical, really.

@@gwenster Oh, I didn't see the angry comments on Margot's review. Will have to take another look. Ugh.I don't see what the big deal is about disclosing the pigments for the individual paints. I don't know of any pro grade paints without pigment info, and heck, most student grade paints have it, too. I had to laugh the other day when she said the info has been on her Amazon listing since shortly after the paints went up for sale. I did finally find it, but it was like trying to find an Easter Egg in a video game. 😆Why not put it on the website instead of hiding it in the customer Q&A section?!

Good and thorough review. I haven't watched her so I will do that. The tins are very pretty. I hope the brush you have is just a fluke that happened and not a problem with others. I think the colors are very pretty, but I'm not ready for professional paints anyway. They'd be nice for someone starting out. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for the review! It's as close as I'll get to any of these supplies as they're not available on Amazon UK. I'm not supposed to be buying any more brushes anyway, so it's fine.

Yeah, she mentioned when these launched that they were professional paints, and I took one look at what she did with them and knew they were not. That said, I like that her take on watercolors is unique and fun.

What makes paints professional quality? And how are hers lacking? They are pretty comparable to my many professional brands. And I’ve seen plenty of professional watercolor painters enjoy them. Without complaints

@@LCLandI recommend that you watch several of Lindsay's reviews including this one. She clearly and objectively stated why she didn't think they were professional paints. There are particular standards that make a paint professional quality. I think the paints are pretty but not something I'd purchase because of the opacity.

@@LCLand They have that grit and grain you see in lower quality watercolors, and no lightfastness information. That doesn't make them less fun to play with, but I would not sell art I made with them. Please don't mistake what I'm saying as me insinuating there is no value here...there is! But they are NOT professional quality, and anyone who has been painting seriously can see it right away.

I’m a subscriber to you both and have watched reviews from you and her as well on different products. Sometimes I don’t agree with someone’s opinion of something and I’m able to realize that opinions are just one person’s viewpoint. That’s why it’s important for folks to do their own personal homework and research and take into consideration all the different thoughts of others. But as always I have the final say on what I personally like and don’t like. And everyone else has that same right. I’m glad people do these reviews and I’d hope that others would realize that it’s not a review if you just gush about it no matter what. Then nobody would go to you for your thoughts (because they’d always be glowing). You both rock Lindsay & Kristy--in your own special way!❤

Lindsay, this review is exactly why i go to your reviews first! You were supportive of the artist, but very honest in your review of the products. That said, Kristy has done beautiful design work in her tins and packaging, i've always loved her coloring books. However, the paint looked so much like the two other brands you showed, and the grittiness was a turn-off. All the coloring books i have that claim to have watercolor paper are either cardstock or some weird textured stuff, so thats nothing new. Thanks for the very useful review

Thank you for your review. I am not a frequenter of your channel, but do occasionally whatch Kristy's. When I am stuck, I go to one of her videos for inspiration. Her style is completely different than mine, but somehow, her infectious positivity always gets me going again.
I have one set of her brushes and they are a go-to set for me. Can't wait to get the other ones.
We all develop a feel for how we want paints to work for us over time. I totally get that. I mostly use WN professional. Ever since I saw the paints she created I have felt this nudge that I NEED to get them and practice with them. My painting is way too ordinary, and I think that her set pushes the boundaries a bit and may help me loosen up. Those were my thoughts as I watched your review. And you may have pushed me over the edge to finally buy them.
I digitize most of my art, so I am not worried about lightfastness. Even if they were not something that is considered 'professional' (who even defined 'professional' anyway?), as long as I am not trying to do endless washes, they will probably work for me.
I loved the samples you painted for this video, btw! They really show the potential in the palette she created!
Thank you so much for your honest review!

A review ,a honest review, has the positive and the negative! You gave a very professional review. I have most of her products the paints are pretty but I do not feel they have the feel of top professional brands. They are fun much like Jane Davenport products!
You gave a very professional, knowledgeable review, I hope you continue the honesty!
