  • On is a Swiss running shoe company that is the brainchild of Olivier Bernhard, a six-time Ironman champion and former professional triathlete. In just 11 years, the upstart company went from zero to a valuation over $7 billion. This is the story about how a two time world champion and his friends landed Roger Federer to help create one of the fastest growing shoe companies in the world.

I have multiple On shoes and as a competitive runner I’d say there are better options. Sure they look nice on feet but their image overall surrounds the ability to wear shoes for athletic purposes and combine them with everyday lifestyle.
That being said, On created the On Athletics Club about a year ago based in Colorado. This group is coached by the famous and long known runner Dathan Ritzenhein. The OAC is a profesional running team that recruited top collegiate male runners and got a solid team together. Their womens team is a mix of post collegiate and recent grads. They ran fast times and qualified their top athletes to the Olympics this past year.
They make On shoes very marketable by running fast intervals in training with shoes like the On Cloudflow and their carbon fiber racing shoe the On Cloudboom Echo. Not to mention their clothing, expensive as well. Great company though.

I bought their product for the first time ~ in 2014. No one knew this company back then. It was nothing to write home about. Interesting idea but mostly it was the looks. To my surprise, however, they really took off. At first, I saw mostly people in Switzerland wearing ON - this is a special thing with the Swiss, they are conditioned to buy Swiss made (or at least there needs to be Swiss-something) even if it is not something special -- not a bad thing IMO. Then I gradually started seeing ON shoes in Germany, California, Austria, and The Netherlands -- mostly upper-class people. Nowadays, more and more people use them casually, not for technical purposes. This is mostly attributed to the relatively slick design of the upper part of the shoe. Minimalist and clean, not cheesy apart from the "engineered in Switzerland" bs. The latter is necessary as the shoes are not "Swiss made" but mostly made in China instead. The midsole is still funny to me -- it is clear they want to move away from the "clouds" gimmick and are trying to figure out ways to evolve the design, but they still rely on the holes. My point is that this is a Patagonia-type semi-fashion brand for people that justify spending a lot of money based on some technical promises. ON might be yet another gimmicky brand but, boy is it an amazing lesson in marketing. It is the textbook example of how the Swiss industry works -- aim at the premium product in order to be able to charge that 25% Swiss premium.

I’ve bought the cloudmonster, as a rookie runner I bought wrong trainers (Nike renew) plus I didn’t know I was flat footed, the store attendant didn’t seem to have a clue either! Anyway I suffered ankle injury only 8 days into my running….off for 10days. Disheartening.
Someone recommended me these, and my goodness the difference! I’m no longer “slapping the ground” but I feel like I’m flying 😍 My ankle is absolutely fine, not even a twinge of pain.
    Worth it!

Definitely the best looking pair of sneakers I’ve ever owned. I also love that they didn’t need to be laced and I could easily step into them. The soles started to feel really firm on each foot strike recently, though. I only got about 70 miles of running, but many more of walking (all on my treadmill) on that pair before retiring them. I just bought a pair of Hoka Bondi 8’s. They’re much uglier than my Ons and they squeak when I walk in them (I don’t notice it while running because it feels like it’s the back end of the insole that squeaks and I usually strike my mid or fore-foot when running)
I’m excited to wear my retired Ons casually this summer even though I won’t run in that pair again. I’d like to try another pair of On running shoes, I just want to be sure they have some with a softer ride.
I wish all running stores had treadmills- it makes all the difference when choosing a new pair of running shoes. I’ve ended up with so many pairs I’ve hated because the only test drive option was bouncing and awkwardly walking around the store, that and relying on gimmicky foot tests from the sales people. Just let me run in them for two minutes and I’ll feel confident about my purchase!

I had a pair of the Clouds and noticed the same thing. Just bought a pair of cloudsurfers about a week ago and they are insanely comfy! There's a nice bit of rocker in the sole that makes them a joy to run in, and the way the sole has a flat base (as opposed to ridges around the bubbles) will potentially give them a bit more longevity.

All credit to the guy, it’s a great success, with some wise decisions and a good team behind him. But as far as I can tell, they’re a success story mainly because of ‘look’. Whilst some brands have earned their reputation for product excellence and innovation first, and then some years down the road have become fashionable with the general consumer, (Arc’teryx, Oakley etc), these have jumped through that first step much, much more quickly. I live in the home of European trail running, Chamonix, and watched these being worn by more and more people, but nearly all of them are just wandering around town, grabbing a coffee or having a beer. Same when I visited London a few weeks ago. Loads of people wearing them in SW London (wealthy London for those who don’t know), but almost none running in them. They look cool with their funky sole, and mesh upper, and they’re comfy (I’ve tried a pair), but their sales seem to mainly come from fashion users not runners. Trail runners in these parts use Hoka, Inov-8 and Salomon. But as I said, credit to him and the team, I’d love to list on the NYSE after just a decade.
