This guy is assuming every girl will have a husband to marry is very bold. Let’s be honest some of these women might end up alone and they need a back up plan. It is very bold to tell them that there will be a husband waiting for them. Also, as somebody who was in private school, her whole life. Most of those students don’t want to be there. They are only out of private Catholic school because their parents are paying for it. Watch them drop the religion as soon as they start making their own money.

He was actually promoting motherhood's virtues, and encouraging healthy masculinity, ...not trampling on women's roles in society. Pretty sure 100 years ago it was commonplace for a man to work, bring home enough salary to support his household, and the children would always have a parent present to raise and influence them. Then again, the workforce was practically halved, so wages were that much higher, ...whereas nowadays, the one unfortunate backfiring of the women's rights movement is that the workplace is flooded and both parents must work just to get by, and the kids are left to be raised by strangers. Which option would you prefer? I would take the one where one of us could stay home with the kids and comfortably manage, but that's just me I guess...

I grew up in Atchison. I graduated from Benedictine. Harrisons speach was right in line with the community and the school. Family values. Great job!
I resent his speech because my mother had to work really hard for us to have a good life and for me to achieve my professional aspirations. She used to run her business and our household in the best way possible. She is and has always been a devout Catholic, but she has always believed that work is part of everyone's life (making ends meet is so expensive nowadays). The fact that when he thinks of women, he comes up with only two main career paths (homemaker and mother) speaks volumes about how little he thinks of women when it comes to overall societal development.
He's not the sharpest knife in the drawer so I would just consider the source..

I don’t know, run the calculations: the cost to commute, the opportunity cost away from the kids, the cost for day-care, etc . You might find that extra income isn’t worth it.

"Traditional values" or old-fashioned values are just that, old-fashioned. You will find these dynamics still exist in poorer countries or third-world countries, because they make sense just as they used to make sense to us. The man would be the bread winner, the wife would be the home maker, and children would help around the farm or help with required chores/tasks/etc. For better or for worse, and like it or not, this dynamic no longer exists in our modern society. Women now have the freedom to pursue their education and be working professionals and more and more they are electing to not have children. This can only last so long and only go so far, as procreation is the only way to continue society, but we aren't anywhere close to that point yet. I believe women should have every right to pursue their dreams in any capacity, whether that be in a traditional household as a homemaker or as a working professional, or anything in between that. Anyone who desires for this to change, or for us to regress to older traditional values, well, keep wishing. You were born at the wrong time and in the wrong place. Maybe you can go live in a Kenya or something if you're having trouble finding a woman who wants to be a 1960s housewife.

Old Fashioned Family Values - Hardly. We had common ground 'e pluribus unum' when we accepted the fact that we are all created equal, that 'we' (as a nation state/republic) would not foster any religion over another or over agnosticism or atheism and would allow and foster the right to speak and publish whatever we might choose. God, (Catholic, Jew, Muslim, Hindu, etc. etc. etc - long list of gods) does not exist in the constitution of the United States of America. Good thing, too, lest we wind up like Ireland or the Middle East,.
Cherry picking his speech to defend him isn't intellectually honest anymore than those doing the same to distance themselves from his speech to college graduates. He chose to distinguish as between female graduates and male graduates. He chose to suggest that the females might well be better served serving his male counterparts bearing and rearing their offspring.
"Traditional Family Values?" How far back you going with this? Read a little more History, dig a little deeper and discover that humanities 'traditional' family values were as much situational as not e.g. When our kind were nomadic hunter gatherers, Mom simply couldn't stay home with the kids and unplanned pregnancies were likely aborted lest they impair the safety of the group.
When our species settled and farmed, every birth was more likely seen as another pair of hands and a strong back and 'traditionally' large families became the norm.
When the Luddites lost to industry and industry improved the yield of 'family' and corporate farms, the demand for hands declined while demand for tractors increased and the production of each changed accordingly.

He doesn't tell the graduating class to help solve these housing and economic issues so mothers can continue to raise their children. I think he was more directing it towards where women will find greater fulfillment. It's definitely found more in the family than in work and careers. Unless you would think differently, are you here to destroy the image and value of family in someone's life. Is not family more important in life than just working, actually having people to carry things on after you pass away? To leave something behind for those that you love. Everyone is taking this speech out of context like today's society always does. Twisting this honest and stand-up respectable man's words into something that paints him as a villain, even almost demonizing him. He has the views of a conservative, one of faith and rooted into being a family man more than a career man. Do you think he wouldn't have gone over this speech beforehand even involving his wife in it. He was speaking on behalf of his wife from the point where as a married place most of their devotion and values. Faith and family, if you don't have either of those then you are lost and living a sad and unfulfilling life. Everyone needs a Savior and the only true living God, the Lord Jesus Christ can do that. He can save anyone as long as they surrender everything to Him which is not a negative decision to make. We are all sinners and living in a fallen world. Harrison is a man following Christ and is a great example and role model of being the leader of his family including in their faith. We are all called to pick up our own crosses and carry our sufferings and burdens, actually embracing them instead of ignoring or rejecting the big elephant in the room. Everyone needs a relationship with their Creator, God the Father who is, who was, and who will always be. All things came into being and exist because of the Father. So if someone decides to speak the Truth, like Harrison. He doesn't care about pleasing the culture or society in general. He is glorifying God which He puts first in His life clearly. He praises God and glorifies Him by being a father to his children and a husband to his wife. People need to wake up and stop following these ideologies and people leading in the wrong intent and spirit. Following that path of sin and the world leads only to destruction, decay, and eventually death. Not just the death of the body but the second death too of the spirit. It was a very good speech. I watched the whole thing. Which part did he advocate for using people as punching bags? Also, what "most women" think is far from all that matters.
What he did say is that most women in the audience would succeed in their career but the most meaning will be found in their family. So, I agree. If you value money and career over family, you have seriously skewed priorities. And despite what anyone says, "homemaker" is an extremely important, influential, and challenging job that should be highly esteemed instead of denigrated as "oppressive" to women.

I have met Butker at church in Kansas City. He’s a humble and decent guy. All that he said is that there is no comparison to being a mom and homemaker. It is certainly superior then getting a degree so you can go work for Bill Gates or Elon Musk.

A commencement speech should be about their academic achievements and letting them know that what they choose to do with their lives is ok. It's not the place for politics or personal beliefs. It's not the place...even at a Catholic college. It was tone deaf.

As a Catholic millennial woman, I’ve personally noticed that there's a significant movement among young Catholics, ranging from 18 to 37 years old, toward traditional practices such as the Latin Mass, and more conservative values. This younger cohort is noticeably more conservative than the generations that came before, particularly compared to the "boomer" generation within the Church. Many students at this college seem to resonate with these traditional views, and I personally found Harrison’s recent speech on this topic to be profoundly truthful, addressing essential issues for women and the Church and our role in modern society. I personally know 15 young Catholic women ages under 25 who hold college degrees are now married and full time homemakers, many young Catholic are embracing this lifestyle now. Young people are embracing the beauty and flocking to the Latin Mass Parishes making a huge comeback to Traditional authentic Catholicism.
Traditional Catholicism, to me, represents the true essence of our faith. Pope Benedict XVI once said, "An authentic interpretation of the Bible must always be in harmony with the faith of the Catholic Church." This aligns with the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which states, "The Church's tradition faithfully reflects the teachings of Christ and His Apostles" (CCC 78). Sadly, not everyone understands or respects these traditional practices, and it's disheartening to see traditional Catholics face criticism for their beliefs. Harrison is speaking behalf on all the Catholics who embrace authentic Catholicism. He is sharing traditional Catholic values to a traditional Catholic audience of young Catholics who are embracing traditional values. I see nothing wrong with his views, his speech was him speaking to the choir. There is nothing wrong with a Catholic sharing Catholic values with a Catholic audience. This speech was for a niche school not for the entire world to hear, it just got so much publicity because he is a celebrity in the NFL world.
In addition to spiritual and other educational pursuits, many young Catholics, myself included, aspire to embrace traditional family roles. I hold a graduate degree Masters and although I’m educated, my dream is to become a mother one day. Despite personal challenges like infertility in my marriage, my dream is to become a stay-at-home mother. C.S.
