What the Internet did to The Backrooms

- The Backrooms, a trend that, a few months ago, was all over the internet. However, as time has gone on and the whole Backrooms trend has seen itself out the backdoor. It seems that a certain sentiment has been brewing online, a sentiment that I agree with. You see, back in the day, the backrooms was simple. It was an endless, spooky scary yellow room. As time went on though, the backrooms, it morphed from something simple into a full on SCP Foundation Rip off. From stupid entities, levels and lore, to being polluted by trends seen on youtube kids. I really hated the SCP community for a number of reasons, and when the Backrooms basically became a direct clone, *that's when I really just fucking grudged my feelings* against *_brainless morons of that magnitude_* . The fact they turned a good concept into a *shadow of the bullshit SCP community* is beyond my power to process their brainlessness. It's as if they are under control of a *hivemind* : where they _all do the same thing_ , seemingly under one individual's control.

Tbf, when Kane created his version, he never expected it to be popular. This is just his interpretation. Not the actual canon
I remember when the backrooms used to be this cool niche thing that only a few thousand people on 4chan knew about, everything to do with it was near perfect. Then it became over exposed and became the crap it is today.
Bruv those were the days. There were maybe 3 images max floating around of that familiar yellow emptiness and people dredging up childhood memories about getting lost in places like it.
And then reddit got their hands on it-
The original 4chan post that the concept of the Backrooms originates from did imply the existence of a “monster”, but it never mentioned that there’s multiple of them.
Finally. I'm not the only person who remembers that detail.
It also only implied that there was a monster, never did it go into any details which made it scarier
@@outrageousholidayoh-2178 Yeah, it only implied there was one, never said there was one directly

Honestly this is kind of inevitable.
When something gets popular, it’s bound to not remain in its original form.
I honestly love the different levels and entities, because not only do the levels make the Backrooms feel even more unending, but the entities always put you on edge.
yeah, but when there are 9,223,372,036,854,775,999 levels, THEN you realise something's up
Entities that serve mac and cheese and give you balloons and run theme park rides dont make me feel on edge. They make me feel like I'm at yet another overpriced overhyped intellectually bankrupt theme park that bratty kids demand their moms take them to. Yeah, some of the levels are pretty cool and creative, like the one where you're in complete darkness with no hope of getting a good look at anything, but a fucking food court is some literal out-of-this-world cringe. Save that shit for Minecraft ffs
I would love one entity or two AT MOST just to make a wanderer constantly on edge, but when theres about 20+ entities that only appear in certain levels that constantly jumpscare you its not scary and is pure brainrot
Story: Punishment.
Once upon a time lankybox were uploading a cringe video until they got sent into the backrooms. They started recording and screaming that they got sent into the backrooms. The entities noticed this and remembered they have a special place for cringe people they like to call it "Backroom Ruiners". They sent lankybox into this place where they got stabbed, fell. In eternity. The end.
Part 2: The endless agony.
This time This cringe person didn't know the backrooms. They're name was "Topper guild" but the entities knew this cringe person and had a special place for them just like Lankybox. Topper guild was the new experiment for this thing called "Endless Agony" They got stabbed, shot, and all other executions were did to him. Blocks fell on him the entities were excited to call this an place now. And now Topper guild didn't die from the Endless agony but realized he couldn't die. The end.
Part 3: It is not my fault..
This one game called "Poppy Playtime" kept getting used to be in the backrooms even tho they are not related.. Yet they came through the backrooms the backrooms entities realized it is not their fault so the entities goes to the poppy playtime characters and let them watch the videos about them.. Until the creator of these videos came and replaced poppy playtime. Until then they have been missing. Information was not dOnE until then.. We will wait.

It's still crazy how quickly this concept got torn apart by the internet, this is a concept that should've been done better considering how easy it is to understand the three major staples that make the backrooms.
The downfall of the backrooms was ultimately it getting popular. With any community to ever exists, if the fanbase grows the toxic side will grow with it. Thus when Kane’s video went viral, it was inevitable that the fanbase wasn’t going to stay chill for long.
The backrooms is still good.

@@lavalamp329why does that sound like a gay porn title
Backrooms was the first ever fandom that i got into before it hit mainstream media. The reason I loved it so much was unlike most horror scenes reliance on intimidating entities. It was almost exclusively based on the mental stress and anguish of being trapped in liminal spaces. There were a few entities but they primarily just there to make you feel unsafe. The true threats were always the immense toll on sanity and willpower which the loss of either often lead to starvation or dehydration. Once it hit the mainstream that seemed to change. (The video that got it mainstream by kane pixels was outstanding i do not fault him whatsoever it was only a matter of time before it happened.) Initially it just shifted to a hyperfixation on backrooms entities which made it feel more like an scp clone. This was shown by many of the new found footages and many of the fan games where all of the only threats were exclusively the entitites and no longer the actual liminal spaces themselves. That was what initially sparked my disassociation with the backrooms. It only grew further and further once content farmers started milking it and completely shifting the image from what it was to other fandom copy pastes and cringy ocs/low effort crossovers. Ultimately this happens everytime a niche thing hits the limelight but it never makes it less sad to see. If you still enjoy it or are making some of the things i gripe about, you are fine because you alone are not the problem whatsoever, it is just destined to happen every time something like this comes around
Yeah I found it back in 2019, like quite a bit before the mainstream internet found it.
There were actually a lot of entities in the backrooms before, in fact there is a whole wiki on every single level, including levels that are on the edge of being canon, and a lot of entities most exclusive to a specific room but I get that you could have not known about the wiki because it is widely unknown but it really good and even has stories from the backrooms about survivors.
I do agree with how the addition and focus given to the entities sort of ruined the main idea (even tho, as you said, Kane Pixel's series deserves quite some merit on its own, which I like as well). But if you still wanna check out a backrooms-related/inspired product that sort of holds true to the original focus on liminal spaces, there's a game called Subliminal coming out sometime this year which (among a couple other things) puts quite the detail on its environments.
@klevifjolla8095 that seems interesting, will definitely check it out.
@@MrTrooper It's 50/50. The game itself is a puzzle game (puzzles take place in the liminal spaces) but there's the entities element too (which makes sense due to the inspiration from what many consider"the backrooms").

I do have to agree with you. I genuinely never liked the inclusion of entities of any kind in the backrooms. For me, those just deviate the from the core experience, which are liminal spaces.
However, I do have to admit that I quite enjoy and love the different levels of the backrooms. I personally love the thought of exploring various spaces with a certain theme to them. For me liminal
spaces were never that scary. To me, they are just very... nostalgic and almost comforting in a weird way.
I did also wanna add, you could also take a psychological horror spin on the levels. Basically each level could represent an individual's further psychological degradation as their own mind tries to perceive and imagine anything but the monotone yellow of the original backrooms. Nobody is stopping you from making something like this, because just like the SCP foundation, The Backrooms don't have a definitive canon.

However,
They certainly shouldn't be easily survivable.
coming back after 2 months it is still horrible, both my shorts feed and my tiktok feed is clogged with "what if [certain person] enters the backrooms"
honestly, the idea of levels is pretty cool if done correctly, and entities could be half-good in isolated cases. what i dislike is the "almond water" and other shitty objects, it just feels like its an SCP clone at this point; same with the "colonies and bases" thing.
the kid content about the backrooms is absolutely horrible. some games about the backrooms can be fun, and its clear their creators put some effort into them, but the majority of them are just "uuuu backroom a lot of entities very scary aaahh"
the wikidot backrooms is way better than the fandom one, it has much more good content, but still has major flaws like i specified earlier (the object thing, knock-off SCP foundation "M.E.G.", a lot of useless and bad entities, and literally garbage levels which just seem better because they dont have grammar mistakes)

I really loved the backrooms but then people just messed it up. Mainly by adding too many monsters and too many things.
I loved the possibility of encountering some things in the backrooms but with so many entities it kind of ruined it.
The original point was about you being *alone* in something that feels familiar.
I love the idea of warnings of an encounter that could make you think you saw something when you didn’t.
But adding threats just ruined it because now you can encounter anything instead of the idea of possibly encountering something.
What do you think of partygoers
@@DiamondWorldCZcams I don’t really know because I’m mixed on them but if we want to keep them then I think they should only be encountered on the floor they are from (I heard every floor has basically the same entities at this point) and they are a regular threat but having them move in groups could make them harder to find if you do find them you are done.
But if we want it to be just like the original idea of the backrooms then it’s best to just keep the floor and get rid of the partygoers all together or at least make them a rare threat on that floor.
@@MrTrooper Ya, for entities there are many other entities that I would love to see represented mostly for their own floor (Like the game master I think his name was) that would mess with you or some other entity that would help you but no one’s made anything that reflects the other types of entities only the ones that kill the people.
Plus with the recognizable entities getting spread out to basically every level made the floors not so different mainly the lore made me fall out of it but many things play into it. Didn’t ruin it but giving a basic concept too much could make it boring or just tiring. Like fnaf for instance, though that series is still popular despite the spaghetti lore.

I’m actually writing something akin to it in this story universe I’m writing. It has some inspiration from Kane Pixel’s experiments and Percy Jackson’s labyrinth, and it forms when a tear in the fabric of space in time occurs, and reality compensates by attempting to mimic its surroundings though failing to do so perfectly. This leads to strange shifting architectural patterns and doppelgängers that inhabit it.

As an entity i left the Backrooms bc of lanky bOx 😢
The whole point of liminal spaces was how uncomfortable they are in their familiarity yet uncanniness. Then the appeal of the backrooms was the horror in being stuck with no way out in one of them until the isolation drives you mad and you starve to death with no one to ever help or find you. It's so sad it got morphed into whatever bargain bin SCP it became cause the original concept was actually so appealing.
I miss the old Backrooms
i honestly somewhat like the addition of some of the monsters/entity,but i think some are irrelevant while some can be good additions. the original forum however said that you were not alone and if you heard it, you heard it. another thing are the levels, i think it just should only have like 9 levels and not an infinite amount and not including negative levels and sub levels.
I would like to make you aware of the fact that before kane made his backrooms vid there were already multiple levels, entities/monsters and even factions in the backrooms lore which is still pretty ridiculous.
Unfortunately, this is how things tend to go when it comes to channels like LankyBox. The thing gets popular, it has its 2 days of fame, and then the content farms pounce on it. Soon enough, it’s now essential to have it during a CZcams kids video. Then it dies out after a few months, and the cycle repeats again with a new popular thing. This is the circle of life on CZcams.
The backrooms is proof we all have been on the internet too long.
i really hope backrooms was just the way it was, the empty image of a yellow infinite maze, the idea of colonies is dumb, the main focus of backrooms is isolation. no entities, no people, just your own nightmares existing as illusions.
People adding random shit like entities and levels was gonna happen eventually, unless the Backrokns didn't become famous at all.

Bro dissed EddieVR so bad😂😂
also no he isnt a kids channel neither are the boys
the way scps and backrooms get massacred is why i understand gatekeepers

What about level 94
I completely agree with the monsters taking away from the psychological horror aspect. I personally think the backrooms are infinitely scarier with isolation and knowing that your biggest threat from another being is a human who has gone insane grom being in your situation for longer. There's fear in knowing you'll probably feel yourself die of dehydration, but also a tinge of fear in your final human interaction being with someone who has lost their marbles. Given that there's no food or water also better guarantees that the crazy person will be a violent cannibal too.
Levels and entities in the backrooms range from really good and creative to “take the right slide…OR ELSE😱😱😱💀💀💀🐍🐍🐍🤓
i never felt like the name fit with the visual (the classic yellow picture.)
it never felt like a back room to me. more like this... impossible spot. i dont know, man.
Liminal space
I remember seeing someone asking "What's the backrooms?" and the first reply being "It's a meme."
That made me pretty sad ngl
Epic thing: *exists*
Internet: *you will suffer a thousand deaths of lives.......* ok give me THE MONEY
I kind of think they could keep the levels, but just remove the entities that could kill you just want that could drain your sanity
I was a fan of the backrooms before analogue horror hit it and it really pissed me off on how many details they got wrong and how people just went along with it, you know the big black tangly wire creature, like the freaking mascot of the series? it doesn't exist, like it's never mentioned in the original backrooms lore, (there aren't even entities on level 0) and they got some of the different levels way off. there were only 3 levels origanaly and that could've been it, but the internet had to screw it up.
And this is why allowing for multiple interpretations is important. Instead of an ongoing war over oh backrooms with monsters backrooms without and whatever just let two interpretations exist. There can be people making content on the entity based with all the levels and then the psychological ones can be right next to them
Also letting the content of pandering, soulless people that don’t care about whatever they’re making a video on ruin whatever for you is one of the dumbest things you can do. If that ruins it for you and you stop making actually good content and just abandon it that means those people win. They get to dictate what happens to it then. “Oh rip backrooms, it’s now just huggy wuggy sonic exe slender man shit now” you don’t have to let it be that.
Overall I’m tired of seeing videos of “oh the internet ruined the backrooms” just cus people can’t allow for multiple versions of something exist. If you separate interpretations and don’t let it be bound by one kind of cannon it just makes it so you can have both and it can just be more fun.
May be “wrong” but that’s what I think
I don't understand your point about the SCP foundation, because the main thing about the universe (atleast before the current sleep inducing lovecraftian lore) is about an organization cataloging in formal documents and hiding stuff that defies the normality, and while horror is a huge thing in SCP, it isn't the rule, which honestly makes it more believable.
i like the multiple levels because it give off the sense of escape,a false sense if you say. hope tricking the individual that they can see their love ones again then boom a new level and they break down crying.but that is my opinion
The editing has been especially insane lately
in my (definitely not biased by being part of the fandom) opinion, not all of the new levels and stuff are that bad. Some people enjoy the original version, but others enjoy the expanded lore. The fun part of it is that you can make your own levels, groups, and creatures. I built a Roblox model of level 52 for fun and a bunch of entity #68 roleplayers showed up and now they have their own lore. Was fun to watch.
(Entity 68 fr looks like Dream had an emo phase its pretty funny)
I wanna make a good backrooms game now. One that is truly infinite. There is no levels. Just empty space. And that entity hallucination idea? I am so taking that and crediting you for it. No multiplayer. No ending. Just walking around endlessly, and as you move around' the screen looks worse and worse. You go insane. Basically just a good game with an extreme sense of dread the entire time.
Good luck on your journey brother

11:30 There is a Backrooms game on Steam with that idea and it's pretty good. It's called The Complex: Found Footage and it's free.
I bet some film company is gonna try to make a backrooms movie, if there isn't one already.
A24 films
it will either flop or make 100,000 dollars in box office or be a absolute banger
I really loved the concept of being isolated in the backrooms, then people started making up levels and I didn’t really mind it, until more people made it into a survival aspect with entities, almond water, and other people in the backrooms as civilizations. It took away the whole feeling of being alone and the liminal space idea with things like levels that weren’t giving you a feeling of nostalgia and isolation, they where just weird out of this world concepts. Not only that but the absurd amount of levels and attaching it to an experiment ran by an organization. By that point I lost all interest cause it was transformed into something different than what it was originally meant to be and ruined it.
and the levels aren't even liminal spaces, they're just random places in the world that don't even give off the vibe that you'd get from the Backrooms
Lankybox with Backrooms entities: "Get back to wooork! i said, get back to work blud! when did i say you could stop working?"
Add a reply to this comment if you remember being invested into the Backrooms concept in or before Mid 2021

youtube kids : *sees a new trend*
youtube kids : i will farm you
I miss when it was just a yellow room with nothing else
Yea but that gets boring quick, instead of a creepypasta it’s just a concept to be lost forever and forgotten
I really liked an older version of it that I dont remember where I found. Basically there were 3 levels (yellow rooms level 0, concrete rooms level 1, and industrial rooms level 2 if I remember correctly) which were an allegory for moving on from something. Where the first level had no threats and you could leave but be brought back later, or go through the hellish next two levels and finally move on never to be brought back. I believe it was a youtubers adaptation of it, but I dont remember their name.
A24 is making a film.
People will scream in a cinema.
Yep! Everyone’s gonna love it! 😀
It went from psychological horror & liminality to OMG YOU GUYS POPY PLAYTIME AND AMOGUS AND GIGACHAD (!GONE WRONG!)
My guy you need to mature 💀Calling all of the backrooms games out there shitty cash grabs just 'cause they got a little more than yellow rooms is mad childish on your end
You know theres more than just the yellow thing its called level 0 and thete are more levels.
The mario kart music that doesnt go past this one part is driving ME insane
I remember when there was like only 5 popular backrooms videos and one of them was filmed in gta 5 where a police officer got trapped in the backrooms while investigating a house of a missing person, now i cant find it because when i look up „backrooms“ i am greeted with pure brainrot
at least we still have the wiki...
As a former member of the backrooms fandom, i can confirm that it IS like an scp rip off
Backrooms then: You just noclip into empty rooms with nothing for eternity causing you to go insane and eventually die
Backrooms now: after you beat level 59996470, you get to battle the spiderman elsa entity and advance to the chungus level where you can escape if you go down the right soyjak slide.
I don’t like backrooms now at all, but the og backrooms just seems like a boring concept to be lost forever, personally I think they can keep the levels and like 3 entities but that’s it
I remember I asked one of my friends what would he do if he was in the backrooms and he shoot himself(not literally) but he showed it to me as an action. What I would do if I was there I would just stay quiet and try to find a way out
where the hell do you find a gun in the backrooms
@@user-xq8qs7iv7v it could be in his pocket
I got a lankybox ad while watching this and I had a meltdown
I remember the first monster of the backrooms, the human himself going crazy by wandering in a endless ambient
Videos like these are pretty much another reason WHY Kidd Video will never be released on DVD(legal & licensing issues aside).
legends say hes still outside of freddy fazbears pizzeria
i think the wiki's concept of multiple levels is pretty cool, it just adds to the feeling that you're hopelessly lost
but overflowing them with entities is a bad idea imo. sure, there can be some, but it works best if there's only a few.
