Guzzi is the winner: made in Italy, shaft drive, rare on the road, great sound (non stock), brembo brakes, traction control, air cooled, easy maintenance, huge tank, clunky and perfectly imperfect.

My vote would be the V7. It has longevity as a result of engineering integrity, which gives it more legitimacy in my eyes, than being a style throwback for fashion reasons. The engine configuration means you can access the cylinder heads easily without taking the tank off and lends itself to air even cooling (unlike in line Vs), adding to the simplicity. It also means there's space for a huge 21 litre fuel tank and there's no chain maintenance due to the shaft drive. The bench(ish) seat means all day comfort for a wide range of heights. It has really been thought through as a useable and versatile tool, which will last a lifetime. That to me is real quality.

I think we motorcyclists are lucky to have so many great bikes to choose from in the modern classic category.
    Non of them are
bad bikes and a broad band of price points too. In a way it reminds me of the 70’s, what a great choice we had back then too.
Luved the vid Dave. I haven’t had the pleasure of riding the BSA or the Guzzi but I’d be happy to own any of the motorcycles in todays evaluation.

Currently own a 1989 Moto Guzzi Mille GT 1000 cc that I have had for 20 years. Once took me 120 miles on one cylinder at highway speed when one spark plug wire crapped out on a Sunday morning with no shops open. At almost 70 years old it has gotten too heavy to maneuver in and out of situations. Purchased a 2013 Moto Guzzi V7 Stone at more than 100 pounds less wet weight. Absolutely love it. Will stay with Moto Guzzi for the rest of my riding life. I have owned BMW, Laverda, Ducati, Moto Morini, Triumph, BSA, Zundapp, Indian, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Cagiva and loved them all for different reasons, but the fact that I can physically handle the weight of a bike that will cruise (illegally) at 85-90 mph for as long as I need, looks good, is reliable and affordable and unique, why shop anywhere else?- -Mike Battle

I have to disagree with you Dave when you say the Bonneville is not significantly more powerful than the Interceptor or BSA. The T100 puts out around 65hp which is pretty much the same as the Guzzi but it puts out 80nm of torque which is sinificantly more than the Guzzi. For me the Bonneville is in a completely different league to the RE or BSA and to be honest I was massively dissapointed in the BSA it was so poorly finished and just looked cobbled together but each to their own.

    Excellent video as always mate.
I’m starting to think the term ‘modern classic’ is too broad now.. the four you discussed are clearly reminiscent of 60’s bikes (my preference too) but bikes like the z900rs are harking back to the 70’s and even bikes like Yamaha’s XSR900GP which looks like a late 80’s GP bike.. Triumph’s new 400’s really muddy the waters having elements of all three eras.. round headlight and tank 60’s, monoshock and alloy wheels 70’s and upside down forks 80’s…
The four you compared are the 60’s and for me that’s the sweet spot with these bikes.. I agree on the BSA but as a T129 owner I have a soft spot for the Triumph and I do like the Guzzi too.

Guzzi is more agile, has better lights and shaft drive - so for me a bit better for everyday use in the city. l also like the Triumph and Enfield range for the same reasons....Aesthetics are the first emotion we experience when cupping our hands around our eye's peering through a Motorcycle showroom window and getting the first sight of our object of desire...As it happens this is exactly what happened to me when first seeing the 850 Guzzi.....l didn't camp outside the showroom but bought it next morning! .... .Greetings from España

I was looking for a bike to ride to work last year, as my (hot) 2003 Road King is not great in traffic. Enfields rust & the BSAs aren't available in Australia yet, so it was a choice between the T100 & the V7.
After taking both of them for a ride, I must say that the Bonnie is a nice bike but the only "retro" thing about it is the name. It is a thoroughly modern bike in old clothes. I walked away kind of disappointed.
Then I went for a ride on a V7 Special. There's nothing "retro" about the V7 either, it is authentic, tracing it's lineage back to the late '70s. It is air-cooled, has spokes, twin shocks & easy servicing (thanks to it's shaft drive & screw/lock nut valve adjustment) It feels like the bikes I rode in my youth but behaves a little better to invisible things like ABS & fuel injection. Basically, it ticked all the boxes, so I had no choice but to take it home.
Eight months later, the only time I have sat on my Harley is to look at the Guzzi & the only time I have sat in my car was to move it to make it easier to get the Guzzi out.
I still plan to buy a T100 but only to drag a sidecar. That little Italian has won my heart.
*EDIT - I fully intend to buy a BSA Gold Star as soon as they are for sale in Australia for one simple reason. They are powered by the same engine as my all-time favourite bike, BMW's F650 Dakar. That makes them worth the asking price as far as I'm concerned, regardless of what the rest of the bike is like.
Thanks for an interesting video, by the way!

It’s amazing just how honest and authentic the V7 is…..it’s not trying to be something it’s not….what you see is what you get…”take me or leave me” it says. And yes that Rotax single in the Gold Star is well proven 👍🏻

BSA wins 🏆 👏 for me also.
Love the Motto Guzzi and Triumph but the BSA is so beautiful and that single makes music.

I love them all and there's the problem. It's very difficult to judge a single against a twin there two different animals I've tried the Interceptor and the GoldStar and chose the latter because i personally loved its looks, its character and the fact its a big thumper. As for the other two I'd love either of them but there bigger engines and a bigger price especially the Triumph. You pays your money etc.

Well it all depends I think, on a first note… your comparison between the bikes on bhp goes all wrong… The T 100 has about 64bhp.
In reality you should compare the V7 special with the others too because that’s the most classic looking of the V7 line…
The BSA and RE aren’t in the same league as the Triumph and V7 , not the same power nor the fit and finish.
I can’t speak for the price over in the UK but in Scandinavia the V7 special is more expensive than a T100 …. anyway like your review but like to hear right facts too🤣
Have a nice day and keep the videos coming 👍

My Sportster is the real deal,so is the MG 750. Shaft drive much better than a chain drive. Cheaper and cleaner. I believe it has hydraulic valve adjustment. You can also get a gear drive to eliminate the chain drive. If l had one I would go back to carburetors. EFI makes modern motorcycles run hot as Hades to pass pollution controls standards.MG750 is a much better bike.

BSA have added the 4 year warranty in an attempt to boost sales i think, this bike is going to be a one hit wonder, just my opinion. That new Himmy looks awful, old one was a much better rugged style, new one looks just like any other modern bike. Love that Guzzi.

If I was buying a Himalayan I would choose an original model pre registered for a bargain price . The new model has lost the plot with all the tech & fly by wire throttle , this is just more non essential tech to cause issues ,in the middle of nowhere . Not good for a bike that gets used for adventure in third world countries . I agree with you about the BSA Goldstar ,that’s the one I would pick ,as I have always had a soft spot for singles & it’s priced more realistically than the fake modern Bonnies, which lack the elegance of the proper original Triumph Bonnies . The Guzzi is the type of bike you choose with your heart & not your head ,like most things Italian . The RE Interceptor is the one I would choose if I wanted a classic looking parallel twin. The Triumph wouldn’t even get a look in. 👍

Agree with you about the Goldstar, and it has a very strong point that's seldom mentioned : the Rotax .engine. I can see out my bedroom window here my 2001 BMW F650 Gs with the same 650cc single cylinder Rotax engine. For those who don't know Rotax has made aviation engines for decades. Enough said.

    i thought 100 percent guzzi,, just shows how you cannot feel what other people feel ,, so i was wrong o dear ,,,, i do not own a guzzi but have ridden them a long time ago , which leads me on to say that moto guzzi's are still made in the original factory and follow closely the older models - which makes them the most authentic modern classic bikes but this is not true because they were always this way ;;;;;

Did I hear you right? You passed judgement on the T100 and haven't ridden one? Better gearbox and suspension, more power and better quality feel than the rest, maybe bar the Guzzi if you can live with the clunky 'box and rocking at the lights, oh and that awful clock.

I just think the rear end of the Gold star is awful. The. Light should be on the mudguard with the No. plate below. I think RE miss a trick not doing a GT with straight bars. I don’t like the interceptor tank.

A thought provoking video or just an excuse for me to "get out of my pram"? The term "Modern Classic", surely an Oxymoron, refers to a style of motorcycle built between 1955 and 1965, an 'old look' with 'modern' parts. The T100, and the BSA are deliberately made to a style that will grab a market share of old men looking for their youth. The BSA is the worst offender with the T100 a close second. The Enfield is well made for it's price, but spoiled by having skimpy mudguards, spoke wheels with ( dangerous) tubed tyres and poorly positioned footrests. The Moto Guzzi V7 stone is almost unchanged since it was first launched back in the sixties. It is not a 'modern classic'. Moto Guzzi have just kept on making and gradually improving them. Air cooled, HO, two valve twin with shaft drive. Disc brakes, alloy wheels and ABS for safety, Fuel injection and can bus electronics with all round LED lights for economy. I have a V7 because I can get on its low flat seat with my old legs and worn out hips. It's well made and a joy to ride and quirky enough to not be 'run of the mill'. It shakes and vibrates and takes ten miles to warm up the gearbox enough to make neutral accessible. They say it will feel much better when it has 10000 on the clock. So far with 2700 miles it gets better every time I ride it. Perfect? No. A fenda extenda on the front helped but the rear end gets proper filthy. MUDGUARDS , I say, we needs better mudguards.
