Read what other critics had to say: www.rottentomatoes.com/m/last...
In 2003, 30 years after they served together in the Vietnam War, former Navy Corps medic Richard "Doc" Shepherd (Steve Carell) re-unites with Former Marines Sal (Bryan Cranston) and Richard Mueller (Laurence Fishburne) on a different type of mission: to bury Doc's son, a young Marine killed in the Iraq War. Doc decides to forgo a burial at Arlington Cemetery and, with the help of his old buddies, takes the casket on a bittersweet trip up the East Coast to his home in suburban New Hampshire. Along the way, Doc, Sal and Mueller reminisce and come to terms with shared memories of the war that continues to shape their lives. Director Richard Linklater and author Darryl Ponicsan collaborated on the screenplay which follows the trio as they wrestle with the pangs of war both past and present.

I loved the film. You guys didn't like it. No problem. But to stammer on for minutes on end about how you can't completely tell us why pretty much renders this review pointless.

Although not Linklater’s best I thought this film was incredible and perfectly encapsulated my conflicting feelings about war and service men/women. Steve Carrell’s devastatingly beautiful and honest performance here may be his best yet.

May I ask, were you ever in the military?
I only ask cuz someone else, in another comment section of the official trailer, said that you'd have to have been in the military to understand this movie.
I haven't seen it, I also haven't been in the military but I highly doubt that's a true statement!

I was thinking the same thing. It is surprising that professional film critics would not have seen The Last Detail.
On a related note, I recall seeing the late Roger Ebert's review of Four Brothers. He pointed out that it was inspired by the John Wayne western The Sons of Katie Elder. He then remarked that he had never seen it. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. That movie has been shown on TV a gazillion times. How is it possible that Ebert never saw it?

I'm sorry. I don't usually jump in when there is a chorus of disapproval, but I'm shocked. The Last Detail is a seminal film of The New Hollywood Wave, and also an incredibly influential road and buddy movie. Please watch this film both of you. You'll understand why we're so shocked that two critics, not in their twenties, haven't seen it.

I really enjoyed this movie as I do most Linklater movies. It takes a while before you notice anything great about it. The first act goes by without really making you think about or feel anything but it eventually gets going. The emotion builds gradually and at the very end it very knowingly gives you a sweet ending right after threatening to ruin you. Bryan Cranston is amazing to watch, the dialogue is poignant yet never seems staged or forced. these seem like real people and the movie is better off for it. they hint about a dark event that happened in Vietnam several times without really getting into it even when the movie decides to actually confront make the characters confront it directly. It feels a little unsatisfying but i suppose milking the melodrama and laying bare with exposition dumps (like many other writers and directors might choose to do) would be worse. They talk about government, service, war, authority, civic duty and stuff like that a bunch and it's definitely not really that edgy or revelatory as Alonso mentioned but I wouldn't call it safe either (these are Vietnam vets during the Iraq war we're talking about. not Gulf War vets in the Obama or Trump presidency. I think it makes a difference) and i think the greater overarching theme that they're getting at is truth and lies and how that duality interplays with right and wrong in ways we don't always expect it to. I recommend it even if you're not a Linklater completionist

The 70's was the GREATEST decade for movies no matter what genre you choose to talk about and for critics to not have watched an example of why that decade was so great is embarrassing.

The fact this review doesn't get it does not surprise me. In the military, all kinds of men are thrown together who may not have gotten close were it not for that they were in the same shitty place facing the same shit day after day. These three men came to love and trust each other because they had to. The all knew their lives were dependent on someone with whom they wouldn't have been friends...and they all defended each other in spite of their differences. Ask yourself, how many old friends who you haven't seen in years, maybe decades, could come to your door in pain, ask for help, and you would drop everything and go help them. That idea is overtly expressed in the Carrel and Cranston scene in the car when Carrell says he can't believe Cranston has just turned over the keys to the bar to a guy sleeping on the pool table. War binds people. It binds them in ways no other human act can.
They also clearly don't understand foxhole humor.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, having watched it last night. These 2 losers who make money by watching movies and critiquing them as if they know what they are talking about are almost nauseating. They obviously haven't spent a microsecond in uniform and known what it means to be in service with others and bond with them for a lifetime, if they're lucky enough to survive the experience. I agree totally with those commenting noting that these two should have seen The Last Detail if they're going to make comparative analyses like they are between the two movies. And lastly, he lost me at the starting gate with his description of the 3 characters as having all been Marines. 2 Marines and one Navy Corpsman, to be precise. Having been one of the latter at one time in my life I'm fairly cognizant of that not so subtle difference. If he did know that of which he so glibly speaks, he would know full well how sacred the bond is between US Marines and their Navy Corpsmen.

Most people will find it hard to empathize with the characters, especially Sal and Muller. The reviewer used the word "superficial" to describe the film which exactly the attitude that Americans have towards their veterans. They will happily parrot the words "duty", "freedom" and "hero", but in their hearts and minds they really cannot related, and in many ways outright refuse to relate to these deeply troubled individuals. There was nothing wrong with the dialog or performance of the actors, so the lack of emotion is experienced by the film is very much to do with the viewer. The treatment of war veterans is a collective pain that has been repressed by American culture and this review a manifestation of that.
