2019 Proton Persona (Pt.2) Test Drive: Genting Hillclimb - The CVT versus the Mountain

  • Although the Persona has some new features that make it a better value for money package, we still need to check it out in terms of ride and handling.
    With the new CVT tuning which effectively lowers the overall gearing, the rubber band effect has reduced, but at the cost of better fuel consumption. What about the power to climb mountains then?

      nabill arif the tyres should be thrown away immediately if any owner gets the car. It is simply one of the worst junk tyres, lowest of the lowest. Harsh compound, absolutely rubbish grip on wet, and super loud noise on virtually any surface. Why Proton choose to fit this lousy tyres on their cars and let it to be shown in front of so many car reviewers’ camera is really beyond me, it do more harm than good to Proton’s image.
      Ps : on an interesting note, the new Myvi is even louder than the Persona / Iriz under full acceleration.

    • @YSKhongDriving
      @YSKhongDriving  Před 5 lety +20

      The option to change to new tyres or different tyres has always been there, and there are some who do exactly that. As said before, cost is a big factor for cars in this price range, so the car makers try to strike a balance between cost and performance. The naied truth is that most people don't really know or care about performance of the tyres. And usually car makers look at the tyres amdeasure noise level at speeds below 100 kph, and also benchmark cabin noise against other cars in the same class, then decide where in the pie chart they want to be or are at. Cost per unit plays a huge part. A RM100 variance per unit can be worth quite a bit if you make 200,000 a year.

    Hello Ivan. I've been following your reviews and I think u do great reviews of cars. I'm also a car enthusiast having owned a number of performance cars including the RS265 which was a blast to drive everytime on challenging roads like Genting with its sublime handling.
    While i like to see your reviews of performance oriented cars on your Genting runs, i think for other more normal non performance oriented cars, it would be better to review these cars on roads usually these cars are used for. Most people buy a Persona or any non performance oriented cars not for enjoying a run on the twisties. So it would be good if u have a variety of road reviews other than just Genting runs.
    Don't get me wrong. I like Genting, Ulu Yam etc runs but only with performance cars.
    Anyway, keep up the good reviews.

      @@YSKhongDriving but you know persona is undersquare 1.6 while saga is square 1.3 engine right? (bore x stroke) Although different cc and hp, square engine perform a lot better.. • @YSKhongDriving
      @YSKhongDriving  Před 5 lety +14

      Whilst you are right about over square and undersquare, there is no substitute for CC. The 1.3 has to work harder. Buying a smaller engine and putting a stroker kit does not make that much sense, and also it voids warranty. Besides, the Persona has so many things that are better in quality than the Saga - which explains the price differences.

      Stabilisers do reduce body roll: however some body roll is always necessary for handling reasons. The point is whether any part actually improve handling. Comprehensive testing is required by qualified drivers and the amount of control can be quantified: many people go by the size, but material also matters. So it depends on who is making them and what claims they are making. Reputation counts. I have seen some that work and some that work so so only.

      @@YSKhongDriving If Proton wants to avoid the headaches faced by Honda, Hyundai, Ford and many other carmakers with GDI engines, dual injection should be the system in their future engines (or more like Geely's engines). I can only hope X70's T-GDI engine is doing good in years to come.

      It all boils down to cost. Because people are prepared to pay more for some brands, it encourages those makers to spend more on better technology. Anyway, people seem to accept the enw X70 is better quality, so they are prepared to pay more, but we also note the buyer profile for theX70 is quite different from the traditional Proton buyer.
