Toyota GT86 Genting Hill Climb - WHY? Just Because [Test Drive] Part 2 | YS Khong Driving

- The Toyota GT 86 is a great bundle of fun, and there seems to be no age limit as to who can drive it. I had great fun- there's not that much power, but then, power isn't everything, right? Enjoy! The key is perhaps the superb handling, and a point to note is that this is one of the earliest Toyotas to have the combination of Front Macpherson struts and rear double wishbones. This arrangement seems to work very well, and today you also see it in Lexus and the new Camry and C-HR. I won't be surprised if others adopt it. It has always been around, but in the last 2 decades, car makes have not used it, perhaps because they didn't know how to tune it, or more because it adds to the cost of the car. To an average person, it perhaps does not make any difference, but to a car lover, this is handling heaven!
Thank you to my friend Peter Shea for introducing me to this channel. Finally a Malaysian car CZcamsr doing actual driving!
Thank you Wai Leong.
Agreed brada
Siapa selalu bawak manual mesti terasa dia punya feel amik corner...cuma 86 punya body steady je takde membuai...boleh nampak kat video memang feel betul...nice video !!!!
YS. Do you know what i enjoy most from watching your videos? Honestly it is not so much the drivings.. but your patience and professionalism on the road. Kudos!
Thank you Albert!
Never knew about that connection between caster and steering feel! Awesome and informative video
Awesome driving.... the real driver!!!
Love your videos. Really good driver with lots of experience. Clear explanations about gearing and the car itself. Keep up the great job. 👍👌
Welcome to the channel. Please enjoy our videos. And thanks for your comments.
I really enjoy watching you drive and explain everything about the car
Uncle YS killing it. Can also see he’s smiling driving the 86
finally. someone who truly understands vehicle dynamics reviewing for Malaysians. Thank you Sir.
You are most welcome. Car handling and vehicle dynamics are two of my favourite subjects. And thanks for watching.
Bunta driving gt86 =D
subscribed, cause u can drive profesionally, and safely :)
Thank you, and welcome to the channel. Hope to continue providing exciting content.
Subscribed & this is my 1st comment in youtube, hope can sit beside u,haha & learning ur driving skills.😆
Great machine with awesome man.... My god this is dope
Yeah, racun!
What a steal, comes with LSD as well so I can trip during my road trip.
HAHAHAHHAHA
HAAHHAHAHA
can foresee alot of visits to recon dealers for the 86/brz heheh, lovely work Uncle YS!
Free advertising, drat!
Uncle.. while you driving the initial-D song running in my head.. you know the eurobeat stuff haha..
Hahaha. Quite a few have said the same. Thanks!
Uncle ... you’ve just made me fall in love with this car. The only concern I have with the recond units is really the need for experts to help assess if the car is genuinely in good condition, accident free, etc. I wonder if this car will be easy to maintain. A manual transmission is a no brainer and I am even considering driving this to work daily. Thank you for your awesome video. You really have a lot of confidence behind the wheel, judging from the way you speed through those corners.
Yes, you need someone who knows a bit about cars. Need to check certain things like chassis, accident damage, engine, suspension and transmission.
Get well soon uncle YS! Thank you for your amazing video
Thank you Chris.
watching uncle driving manual is a lot of fun 😆😂
Hoping to see you drive an AE86 someday up to Genting
Bro Kong, everyone who watched your video know you are an awesome rally driver and an accomplished racer. How about showing us your drifting skills too as this car was built for this purpose. Cheers...
Hahaha, drifting is another set of skills. As a rally driver, the idea was to put the car sideways to turn because we need to use the rear to steer, but it was always just enough and we have to straighten immediately so as to be fast and not waste time. Drifting is the exact opposite, to hold the car sideways as long as possible. Thus I don't think I will make a good drifter as my training is to drive as fast and as straight as possible.
#rachun 😆
@@YSKhongDriving learnt something today. Tq sir.
I was binge watching you car reviews only to found a 2 part series of my dream car being reviewed and was put to the test on Genting?! Not to mention, with a stick shift!! Omg you've earned a subscribe from sifu ehehe 🤭🙇🏻♂️
Welcome to the channel, Amiruddin!
love that manual transmision
Yes. Agreed!
Subscribed & my 1st comment in youtube, hope got chance sit beside u learning😆😆
snappy snappy ! nice 🌡️👍👌
Yes, very! Thanks.
Masterclass👍
Fun and safely fast when u were alone, but drive them wisely. Subscribing for further entertaining videos Mr. Khong 👌 im Indonesian and might rent car in Malaysia to get to Genting on a trip on February, because of this videos 😅
Hahaha, welcome to our channel. Be careful, though, on the mountain, especially on the downhill stretches.
Real master. Masterful driving
Thats how otai driving just like my dad
YS :leave traction On for fun.
us: leave traction control On for not to die.
Uncle ever consider test driving Nissan GTR?
Uncle, can test drive one of the cars on Fraser Hill climb or downhill one day? Would love to see that, the roads are quite fun to drive.
Hmmm, I did a Porsche drive down that hill before. Maybe I can out that one up.
Minute 8.56 - The standard smile when anyone review the 86
True!
Looks fast enough for normal people. Hope to get 1 in the future.
Correct. There is more than enough power for normal people
very entertaining sir !
I love this car.
Watching this reminds me to the old man from Best Motoring which so popular in the late 90s..
Gan san
Gan san
@@hafizasraf7793 yes he is like gan san.
Uncle you look young driving this car 😁
Hahaha, Optical effect!
When a car can make Uncle Khong smile happily, this car can't be anything bad. Haha!
On a side note, can Uncle Khong do an uphill run with an Alphard or Vellfire? Would be very interesting to see that. Heheh!
Alphard or Vellfire - let's see if I can get hold of one.
It’ll be great if a few seconds can be taken to describe a bit more technical specs or set up of each car that’s being driven - type of tires, wheel sizes, shocks, any lightening done etc, something japanese car videos excel in. Great and respectful driving sir!
Fun? ok. im sold!
Awesome driving and very informative. Thinking of getting one of this recond now...hmm
You won't regret it, I assure you. But only if you like to drive. Those who don't understand will say things like build quality no good, poor sound insulation, and miss the point altogether. This is actually built as an affordable car. Sells for what we pay for a Vios here, in Australia.
If you pick up a pre-owned recond, you can possibly get it under 100k
@@YSKhongDriving Thank you YS. Yes, at about 120k for the recond, it is actually dirt cheap for a 'sports car'. It the fun driving that gets me. Forget about the quality which is secondary to me. I'm in no way near your standard and skill...but hey, an occasional fun spin is all I want. 😁
BTW, I'm a fan of yours. And also not forgetting other greats like Yoong Yin Fah and William Mei.
What was more fun for you to drive sir the Peugeot rcz or 86
Both are nice, one is FWD and the other is RWD. Different behaviour. I enjoy driving both
I wanted to buy this model but since it was so low in sitting position I changed my mind. Daily drive with office attire is not good for me.
But the fun of going to work is double! But I know what you mean. The best car for this is the Avanza.
Make a video to teach Heel and Toe shifting!
Hmmm, ok, will consider. Need a set of lights for the footwell.
yes...please make the video sir...
Tips #1: learn it using a cheap car. Wreck a proton Wira gearbox and clutch the cost is about 4000. Wreck a bmw gearbox and good luck to you.
@@newtonianartist7088 oh yea i will. I gotta get used to a manual first. I once launched my friend's saga so hard because I built up too much rev while getting out of a parking space LOL.
Would love to see that tutorial
Maybe uncle ate too much black thorn durian 🤣
What has Black Thorn got to do with it? LOL. Please explain. So puzzling.
@@YSKhongDriving referring to your changed voice in minit 20 u said
it was the awesome video uncle
Civic used to have double wishbone all round in the EG or EK Civic. That was superb setup.
From EF also have all round double wishbone
So does this mean that uncle can deliver tofus twice, or three times faster than the AE86?
Hahaha, by the time the tofu arrives, it will be soya bean drink
Haha he’s Bunta from initial D
Uncle YS,
whats your opinion, should you get the second hand 86 or cayman....
They are both different cars but I only have budget for one, so which one should i go for?
The 86 will be a more engaging car and cheaper to maintain. Go for the 86. Later you can pick up the Cayman.
Mr Khong, you should try bukit tinggi there, there are some road which is very good for mountain climbing with a lot of cornering. Just for suggestion :)
I actually have another 2 videos featuring the X70 and the Hyundai Tucson on the Bt Tinggi road. The reason I stopped using that road is because it is more risky because of oncoming traffic.
Ya, if you are going for the road, try to be weekdays, traffic usually less. Road to Genting usually tons of traffic😂
The brave old man
Please attribute it to skill rather than bravery.
Double wishbone has more joints and bushes and more maintenance needed? And is it due to awd in certain markets that’s why the rear is using double wishbone as standard to accommodate the rear driveshafts? My guess
The 86 is not available with AWD, so that is not the reason, although you are correct about the ability to accept a drive shaft. It is more costly to make and it has more joints and bushes, but I think the main objective is to provide good handling. Camber remains constant during corners, so tyre grip is consistent.
Uncle shift like its nothing. I only see uncle drive, I cant breath already. hahhaha
Hahaha, at that level everything is instinctive.
Thanks Un Khong - BTW I spy a Proton floor mat on e passenger side - Symbolic or what :D
Probably a free mat.
Btw YS, can u put a camera pointing towards the footwell? We want to see your feet 'dancing' with the pedals
Needs a light too, or else you see nothing. Anyway my feet don't dance so much, other than heel n toe.
Please do a bmw 1 series Genting uphill drive =)
My 86 suspension got sound. Can anyone recommend workshop in KL/PJ that can fix 86?
Alex Wong go look for Tim at SBR Technic
Any car with front "double wishbone suspension" and rear "double wishbone suspension" at Malaysia???
Some of the older cars may have had it. I remember some older Accords had it, but over the course of time, cost considerations saw them disappear. The fact that Toyota are prepared to bring it back means it must be good. Note though that it is only on some of the more expensive models and also on Lexus. The NX 300 has rear wishbones too.
My 04 accord
Altezza, accord euro r.....old civic use them also
well actually the original GT86 engine FA20 is quite different than the EJs
Uncle Ys. Subscribed your channel. You are Malaysia Bunta. Enjoy the car review that actually driving, that show us something else instead of just read out spec.
Thank you. We will try to continue giving you great content.
Can i ask how does it feels like when crossing those speed bump / humps? is the ground clearance sufficient or do we need any additional modifications in order to cross it smoothly?
The car is standard height, and there is no problem with ground clearance.
I hope to see uncle drive Sxe10 toyota altezza manual 6speed and the supra mk4 too😊
I don't know of anyone who would have such cars. Wish I did, though. It would be fun.
This is not a limited edition.
can you compare with s2000?
Let's see - got car, will drive.
Hi compare to the civiv 1.5 turbo prepared you tested , which one is the more fun and the more performant ?
The GT86 is in a class all by itself.
Recommend to add a video record on the speed/rpm meter.
Too many flamers.
Nice
上山?!不,还是下山好玩点...you know what I mean. 🤐
@9:31 uncle, isn't more fun to disable traction control and show us some drift? ;P
Drifting wastes tyres. Not my car, so cannot abuse it, lol
Sir would love to see you drive a fd2r
Cannot get the car.
15:45 what lah 😆
almost bought this car but Malaysia's random road bumps, pot holes and road works just makes it too depressing to drive, plus that interior man for the asking price, Toyota keep shafting customers day in day out.
And you didn't? Oh no!
@@YSKhongDriving nah, the price vs interior comfort value isn't balanced in M'sia, for now I will chill with the M3 2019 :p
I can attest this car with stock tyres on wet road with TC of is like driving on just your rims.
Hahaha. Always invest in a good set of rubbers.
show tail ligh pls
manual still the best transmission learning to increase the driving skill, so I still own my manual livina already 6 years....
Agreed. Need to learn heel n Toe, double declutch
Nice mr.. Admire ur skills a lot
uncle racing with Jay Chow soon?
Who is Jay Chow?
YS Khong Driving - 😂
That roll cage though
Came with the car.
Gti mk6 or this ..what do you think uncle??😄
In terms of fun driving and how it handle at corner
Otai masih berbisa
Uncle Khong, can try Mazda MX5 next time? :D
See if can get one.
Arranged oredy. End July
Uncle should start a school for advance driving
We are thinking of it as part of our activities for our viewers.
Currently in uni, by the time I can afford one I might consider adding a supercharger, if doing so doesn't significantly affect to weight distribution that is
Drive it in standard form first, learn the car first. Then you can do it but start with brakes first
I was expecting some drift scenes...
Sorry, maybe we can do drift next time.
Lol u drive like my dad but in an avanza(my dad) 1.3l with 5 people performs quite like that car
Joking around eh
Some say this car has similar characteristic to bmw e46, is it true?
The handling is definitely not the same. I have driven the E46.
How will you compare between the two? A tuned E46 (with an engine swap) or this 86?
@@YSKhongDriving How will you compare between the two? a tuned E46 (with 1JZ swap) or this 86?
does that roll cage street legal ? JPJ no kacau ?
Came with the car.
@@YSKhongDriving oh ya how can i forgot its from factory. Should no issue just like porsche 911 gt3/gt2 RS factory roll cage install.
What is that proton thing on the left floor.
Hahaha, you are so observant. It's a pouch I use to keep my GoPro cameras safe. The inside us padded so it is ideal for the job. It was a freebie given out at a Proton launch event as a door gift to everybody who attended.
@@YSKhongDriving wow. What a nice door gift. Btw, keep the good and awesome driving skills. Keep fit and stay healthy so that uncle can give us more valuable content and teach us how to drive with proper driving skill especially on a challenging road like uphill, downhill and in rain. Keep up the good work. May God always bless you and your family. Have a good day
Thank you Aiman. I am so happy to hear your good words. Makes it so worth it and meaningful to carry on.
i want buy 86!
Yes! Great car! I enjoyed the drive very much. Fun car.
Is it singapore
No, about 400 km north
ys khong son's car
The redlining sound is basically an eargasm for a car guy lol
Hahaha, I like your description and new word. Eargasm! Fantastic way to describe it!
i like ae86
Between 1984 and 1987, the AE86 was my rally car.
@@YSKhongDriving WOW nice drifting is my fav
Actually the standard wheel is 215, not 205.😂😂😂
Somebody must have upsized it. Didn't have the spec sheet, so relied on visuals.
YS Khong Driving Haha, no problem there. I am actually an owner, that’s why I know the size.
Hahaha. You should know the car better. No need to watch the video, LOL. But thanks for watching anyway. Have you done the Genting run? Be careful, though, stay safe.
YS Khong Driving I try to watch Malaysian you tuber that talks about car as much as possible, support local talent. Did Genting run twice, enjoy every single seconds. 🤣🤣🤣
Toyota GT86 = Subaru BRZ 😂
Flat 4 ? I thought it's boxer
Its horizontally opposed too.
Flat 4 is another term of boxer 4.
So which is better? Mx5 or gt86?
I want both. The GT86 is more raw. The MX is so refined.
which is better, gt86 or fd2r?
For me better pick fd2r because it already got 220hp but if that hp is not enough for u . U can swap K24 and make more hp without any turbo or supercharger while it still cheaper than buying a gt86
Suitable for women? For casual day out.
I think generally women might prefer the automatic, unless she is one who likes manuals. Yes, this is a great car, even as a daily driver. I know a beautiful lady who has a BRZ as a daily driver and loving it.
@@YSKhongDrivinghow about the maintenance?
It's a Toyota. Very easy to maintain.
my neighbour's car...
Hmmm, what house number are you?
