Costello was 90% of the act!. Abbott was lucky to find this guy...I never understood the gratuitous cruelty-slapping Costello around, etc. Humor was different then...but even as a kid, watching this in the 1950s, I never liked Abbott.

Bud was often kind of mean to Lou in their performances, but he could also show surprising moments of sentiment for him (in "Africa Screams" for instance, in a scene where he thinks Lou's been eaten by a lion, and starts crying and carrying on hysterically about it). I think he really liked Lou, but just took him for granted somewhat (kind of like some friends and family members in real life). Interestingly, their real-life relationship was the complete opposite of their comedy act, with Lou often treating Bud in a nasty and cold-hearted way, and Bud sadly tollerating it. But Bud was actually a very gentle and nice man in reality.

You're right! I hadn't noticed that before. Also:When Frankenstein is climbing the stairs, just before he and Dracula catch up to Lou Costello's character, he trips on the next to the top stair!
This movie is so morbid in some places, and yet so hilarious in other places, that it's what I call one of the most perfectly-balanced Horror Comedies I've ever seen in my life! And:As far as Abbott and Costello goes, Abbott would've been nothing without Costello! Lou Costello was the perfect funny man for Bud Abbott's much more straight-faced seriousness! They were such a great Comedy Team! There'll never be another Two-Man Comedy Team, like these two.
      Ever!

@@curbozerboomer1773Agreed! Bud Abbott wouldn't have made it in the Acting Business, without Lou Costello. Never in a Billion Years and more, would he have made it! It truly did look like Bud Abbott could be rather cruel to Lou Costello, and it wasn't just once or twice. At times, Bud Abbott didn't seem to know "What side his Bread was buttered on". In other words, he didn't seem to appreciate the very fact, that Lou Costello stayed with him all those years, and put up with his attitude, which was horrible, at times!

Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein is up there with The Honeymooners or 2001: A Space Odyssey as one of those things I've seen a million take-offs on but never the thing itself (Courage The Cowardly Dog and Scooby Doo, obviously, come to mind, but also Drake & Josh, who were as much Abbott & Costello as they were Felix and Oscar). This is my first time watching any part of it and I can absolutely see why: it's really, really funny! The bit of him comparing his hand to the monster's had me howling! XD
