- In Japan, I had the honor to commentate an Alpha 3 exhibition between the best current Ryu versus vs Daigo, who is known to be RYU in general. Who wins here?! Will 25 years of playing the game able to beat the beast?

Daigo is 42 years old, has not played A3 seriously since the last national tournament in 2000 (23 years ago)
Yet he looses a close set 10-7 to someone who has grinded the game ever since in a mirror?
That should not happen, that is really impressive.
Good stuff.
Edit: Random fact, D44.BAS who is commentating with Justin is the only player to ever beat Daigo Umehara in a Alpha3 tournament (national A3 team tournament in 1999) during it's competative cycle (before it became a legacy game in 1999 when 3rd Strike supplanted it)
Absolutely shows the power of transferable skills, which help your starting aptitude in approaching a game you may have not played in forever, or even brand new games.
3S wasn't really the game that replaced A3 at the time. CvS2 kinda took that title. 3S was always sort of its own thing with its own community.
I would also bear in mind that most of the people playing A3 all this time are used to a V-ISM-centric environment.
So it's still mad impressive that Daigo could hang like this, but this isn't really the version of A3 that Igari's been grinding all this time.
Daigo also had Masumi (one of the top Sak/Ryu players) training with him for several weeks before this, so he didn't go in totally cold.
@@KyokujiFGC That's sorta not true, sorta an over simplification, let me educate you abit.
TLDR: CvS2 didn't come out until mid 2001 and if you go by attendance then it's Super Turbo that reigns surpreme between 2000-2003, read the rest for a detailed explanaiton.
Between 1991 and 1999, the company that hosted all of the japanese arcade national tournaments was a magazine called Gamest. The magazine was cancelled in September 1999 and the last tournament they did was the national team tournament in A3 in early 1999.
At this point the japanese tournament scene was all but dead, as it was entirely built opon Gamest tournaments, so everyone had to start from scratch and start building up their own tournaments again and at this point 3S comes out, something everyone even including Matt McMuscles & Maximillian does not consider when talking about why 3S didn't sell well
All the comunities splinter off in the greater Tokyo area.
D44.BAS's local arcade becomes the hub for A3 tournaments until CVS2 hits..
Nuki & Tokido's local arcade becomes the hub for 3S tournaments until CVS2 hits (and continues to hold 3S tournaments)
Daigo retires the first time, as there is no more tournaments and he does not like 3S but his arcade would be the hub for Guilty Gear X from 2000 onwards.
But the first community to thrive here is the Super Turbo community, as they had a headstart (their game had been dead since 1994) and in 2000 they hold their first edition of X-Mania that would spawn simular tournaments in 3S (COOP Cup) & A3 (can't remember what BAS called it) but the big gathering tournament between 2000 and 2003 is X-Mania (so it's kinda accurate to say the biggest Capcom title during this time is Super Turbo)
Around this time the Japan vs USA 5on5 is held in 2000 where all the main game is chosen to be 3rd Strike, Not A3, Not ST, Not CVS1.
The Japan tournament scene goes dark from here until 2003 when Tougeki SBO revives it again.
@@dyBBelyBTASTIC CvS2 came out in 2001, but Alpha 3 was still at EVO until 2002. Most of A3's core playerbase went to CvS2, which is why I mentioned it as replacing A3 moreso than 3S 'cause 3S was mostly a totally different group of players outside of the OGs who played every game.
@@KyokujiFGC You are correct.
The only notable A3 player (in the US) who would go on to play S3 was Alex Valle (who played quite alot of 2nd Impact in the 90's and was, really good at it) but he would not pick up the game again until 2004.
And the only notable A3 player (in Japan) to make the switch from A2~A3 to S3 was Onuki.
This is so amazing, I heard Alpha 3 is daigos favorite game, love to see him play
I know he plays Alpha 3 on Fightcade
@@Imozart0341I i don't think that he plays on fightcade
I thought that Alpha 2 is his favorite game?
That was insane. It does go to show you, although Igari took this set, Daigo was able to come in playing at a high level because of all of his varied experiences across fighting games, including his solid ground game! Now if his match ups were not filtered then of course it wouldn't have been so revealing of a match.
🎉yeah, Daigo would have gotten wrecked if it was v ism and any character. So the limits here made for a much much better match
@@CS.AtheistChannel.VoteBidenAOCDaigo was a V-ISM Akuma player, man. I don't think there was anyone better than him at this game.
"The Road" is Ryu's best theme. Even the Game Boy Advance port had a bangin' remix.
Facts! It's so underrated!
I honestly hate A3's OST. However I would be lying if I didn't agree with you
The gba version has a guitar shred like part that honestly should have been in the original
@@HeeroExE ryu always has the best themes bro in all stf games
You know what's the best moment in the video? It's 13:00 where Justin says "that was OD!" with that joyous look on his face. Don't ever lose that my man!
I would watch Justin Wong react to anything he likes, really. Such a lovable person
Justin Wong is truly loveable.
I met Justin once...well I say met...what happened was I was chilling with some friends at an after evo event/house party waiting to use the bathroom and Justin walked out.
I was like "hey you're..." but I had a brain fart and couldn't think of his name for a sec, and anyway he just walked by really fast like I wasn't even there anyway.
I had to piss so bad I didn't follow.
When I got into the bathroom somebody had taken the most fowl shit I ever encountered in my life.
I don't mean like they didn't flush or anything...but the small was god awful.
I swear it gave my nose nerve damage for the rest of that night and could like...still smell that smell long after.
I hurried up to took my piss then rushed to see I could Justin...but he went to an upstairs part of the house that was "invite only" and they had two big guys at the bottom of the stairs to make sure nobody uninvited could enter.
Anyway I stuck around for an hour or so hoping to see him again...but I never did.
Idk for sure that it was Wong that did the deed in the bathroom...but if he did I think he might have some kind of intestinal issues or something.
Thank you Justin! 🙏
A match we wanted see for a long time, Daigo in Alpha 3 against some of the best Alpha 3 JP players, in this case the actual best Ryu.
My favorite street fighter. Awesome content Justin, thanks. I'd love to see more alpha 3!
25:30 this moment perfectly sums up the essence of Daigo
Truth
i watch this and i want to cry. daigo is a god
Daigo said "tsk, man listen..."
Any one hit and they were both dead. A good gamble taking the last move for a guaranteed win. Its was either a throw or counter
Why does this never work when I do it lol.
now THAT's what i call great content! tyvm mr.wong
WOW Justin and the boss of CvS2?! This was amazing to watch, more of these please!
The context paints Daigo as Ken between the two, in that with some short training, keeps up with the guy who trains all the time
This is why Alpha 3 is the greatest sf game in the series! That match up was insane!
Damn dude this was a treat of a match to watch the skill level here was insane alpha 3 is my favorite and this was just mwuh chefs kiss ty for this video
Justin this was a treat my guy. Much appreciated 🙏🏿💯✊🏿🔥
That was good. Keep em coming
It's because of stuff like this I wish that EVO was able to extend another day or at least dedicate a whole day to classic games on the main stage.
I have never seen those air combos from recovery’s. That was god like. That was master class in some alpha 3 ryu gameplay.
That's one of the highest level Alpha 3 matches I've seen. Both players made some mistakes but also lots of good reactions and mix-ups.
It's pure muscle memory daigos got it in his blood very impressive
Crazy to see both commentators, JWong and BAS, have competed against Daigo in highly-contested/close matches in tournaments.
i could watch ten straight hours of justin wong commentary lol, would love to see a 3S set
hey Justin i wanna see you in future tournaments but as a commentator ! so cool it would be right ! who wants Justin as commentator ? ido
Fireball motion and select for the fake hadouken is how I used to remember it on the Playstation and you can do it all the time
Justin bro you should tell some back story about the other player, I know Daigo of course but the other dude who playing like God I don't know him, it would be nice to have little bit back story, and this is the best content you providing so keep up the good work
Amazing video :)
LETS GO JUSTIN
:00-_- 😅😊
LET TIME RUN OUT
There's always something about watching 20+ year old games at a high level
Great matches👏👏. Would love to see Justin vs Daigo on CvS2😁.
🎉 love this one. This is gonna be my Sunday play
that's some quality content my men!!!
Thats dope how daigo tatsus over the fireballs to build meter.
Thank you so much for this!
Excellent match!
This is so lit 🔥
25:20 was so sick
Best commentary i’ve heard in years. Serious ,nice not to hear fake hype
Amazing when the commentators actually have played the game at a high level eh? In the US we would have had to include a female in the mix to remain inclusive.. It's ok if she never really played the game because we need representation.. Garbage
@@robertmanes9333 I have literally never seen a female commentator at an FCG tournament, but ok schizo.
Alpha 3? Legendary players? No V-ism? I'm in!
TBH I can only see this kind of match in Japan. The execution and timing is just unbelievable! Unlike DSP, he trashes talk about this game a lot and he will never be good at anything, but only complains about "the game dropped my inputs!". DAIGO and DSP is the definition of the legend and the scrub.
The matches are beautiful to watch when the players are so good.
Maybe now some people understand why I shake my head at people treating Punk and Idom like SF royalty for playing one game well
Daigo is my age, nice to know! Great content Justin!
Same age as me, good to see others my age into such awesome games!
Man that was sick
I always forget you can block mid-air in this game (unless you pick X-ism). This match was intense, ggs.
Alpha 3 music is underrated compared to the other SF's.
man what a good set
Alpha 3 has some of the best music ever! I love those songs
That buffer was beautiful 12:53
Daigo: I was just playing relax to get more rounds to play, if else it will ends immediately XD...always a legend, haha
there's a new Ryu in the block.
Jwong: daigo is like slowing killing him...
LoL 😂
Dang it, Justin... I didn't need to know that I'm even older than Daigo!!😤 😭
I shall remember this as *The Ryu War...*
OMFG the way Daigo mixed him in that first match! IWOULD HAVE THROWN DOWN MY STICKS AND SAID, "MAN, THE GAME IS FUCKING CHEATING!!!" AIN'T NO WAY!!
Taunts are once per round, with the exception of Dan who can taunt all day long.
A-ism Only? that's right up my alley!!!
Are Daigo and Justin just on each other's speed dial
Oof. I know there's zero chance I won't be infatuated with this video. I main Ryu proudly though, and I dunno how awesome it's going to be to see how much I suck.
My God.....seeing them execute everything with perfection. I haven't even been born yet.
I just saw a video where u were spamming an 8y/o LMAO hell!🔥
It is a bit funny to hear when BAS forgets some words in english, however he is trying his best. Good job
I love how it was A-Ism only. The way this game should be played
7:38 what have i said earlier ! when a chance comes to you to deal huge damage and you already won the first round go for the big combo !
2:01 that is gnarly it looks, by all accounts it should be a cross up. and is not. beautifully brutal. 2:35 Ryu in white Gi almost could have done standing roundhouse there. 3:16 damn that was pretty. 5:22 that stuff.
It’s like riding a bike….. u won’t forget how to do it….
Muscle memory is a hell of a thing
have you guys played scramble mode in SFXTK or at least in Mugen ? imagine this mode in for ex SF6 or KOF15 or even earlier games ! i m not talking about dramatic mode in SFA2 and 3 cause you can play just against 1 opponent every match with CPU or a human partner which is not fair lol !
What is scramble mode?
Everytime they throw a fireball i can hear Luke say " HaDoKeN " mockingly xp
if anyone doubts the reactions of 40+ year old folks, just go watch some table tennis veterans on the pro level. it's wild. sure they aren't the dominant players, but there are plenty of people who love their craft enough to stay sharp through their late 30's early 40's.
Daigo reacts with super since SF2. That goes for more than a decade before SF4 or 5.
God i never heard so many "hadoukens" in my life
great match! but for me it was a W for Daigo. The guy was grinding forever and Daigo hasn't played A3 for how long? I wonder how many sets could Igari won against Daigo on SFV or SF6! BUT I'M SURE THAT he would not take 7 games from Daigo...
@justinwong why no cc's in this i feel like if they would have used cc's it would have been alot more exciting
there should be an x-ism only alpha3 contest.
Who is daigo in this match ? White or grey ?
25:30 Casually walk in to shoryu, Ken would be jealous.
The takisu is blockable or chip damage
meanwhile daigos giving wong the side eye for coaching for free
25:30 that was the single most disrespectful thing I've seen. The man walked up on him and violated him....
Daigo Umehara sounds like the final villain in a Shonen Manga. Lol
Hey, Justin Wong. You should play the Arcade version of the original Dead or Alive in a future video.
justin the best hype man xD
Igari fights like Ken.
Is Daigo using hitbox or Arcade stick for this old game?
Realised he is playing on arcade machine, so it's using atick🤣 wonder if he got the choice, which will he choose? 🤔
Just asking where does Justin play all this fighting games or what App or website anyone
I think he uses fightcade but not 100% sure
Daigo impressive. I hope he is with us a few more years. He is very old man
Bro, he's like 40. Come on.
@@nzeusman8215Probably older than you, not as old as Daigo.
Niiiiiicccccccceeeeee
Valle is the reason they are playing Ryu.
Daigo pulling a str8 Mayweather style in these matches
Alpha 3 Aism only ?
I wonder what matchups he banned/allowed
In his stream, he said he doesn't want to play against Dhalsim.
Alpha 3 really does seem much more interesting without V-ism huh 🤔
WHEN U FINISH AN OPONENT WITH THE START BUTTOM.
Daigo is all about fundamentals
Justin will you play mk9??
25:30 S Rank
🔥🔥🔥
Can someone tell me why they don't consistently do air recoveries? Wouldn't it be better to recover instead of constantly getting juggled in the air? Or did they just forget sometimes?
Could get punished, too risky.
Ryu can keep air punching you if you keep flipping out.
Also the other guy was doing crouch cancels which makes the other person unable to recover (if im not mistaken, someone smarter than me confirm)
i miss sf in 2d :(
25:30 goes so hard
Daigo Will always Be in my heart the best street fighter.
