That's pretty amusing how you wrote that. With that said, Falco would probably be less like a babysitter or a calm mentor and more like a Dutch uncle. Whenever they do something well, he showers them with praise. Whenever they screw up, he berates them hard not to be a jerk but to toughen them up and make sure they do better next time.

The saddest part is that Nintendo can't seem to look past the fact that Starfox was mostly used as a tech Demo IP. Whenever something new like a brand new computer chip, or a gimmick of a console (like the WiiU) comes up, they bring up Starfox to test those out. Nintendo is so stuck in this line of thinking with Starfox that they're unable to see the true potential of the series.

Game development isn't just a case of "let's make a game". There has to be direction and purpose. But what is frustrating is that when the series seems to do poorly or hit a snag, we basically just get another remake of Star Fox.
SF2 was cancelled and we got 64. Command was highly disliked, so we got 64DS and Star Fox Zero. But then Zero did poorly.

If they were to bring him back, they can improve on this better.
Like while he resolves to avoid being like Andross, maybe he starts seeing temptations and stuff that shows him Andross's point of view. Ultimately in the end he begins to waver and must either choose to reaffirm his resolve to avoid being Andross(maybe even becoming a "GOOD" version of him, as in using his tech and knowledge but show restraint and using all of this for the good of the system) or becoming him.

The saddest thing about the aftermath of this game is that it ruined Krystal as a Starfox character. She was awesome in Starfox Adventures and Assault. But because of this game, she won't be anything related to a playable character in Super Smash Bros unless Sakurai decides to stop making her an assist trophy. And based on the direction Nintendo has gone with Starfox in regard to Zero and Starlink, we're probably not going to see her ever again unless they come up with a good story for a game that includes her. And no, a Starfox Command 2 is not what we need.

      @EclipseHedgehog Před 3 lety +8

@ComixAndCartoonPro From what I heard; Japan HATES Krystal. So of course Nintendo's going to listen to them first and foremost. It's also ironic because Krystal wasn't intended to be in starfox in the first place ala the dinosaur planet development story. and with starfox zero and starlink recycling the AWFUL art style (bell shaped head, smol body, everyone having head gears and scouters, thanks God they didn't confirm the stupid robot leg theory) I'd rather not see her butchered again with an ugly pink jumpsuit. Not saying she's sexy, but i'm sure Nintendo knows full well she's a sexual icon.
The merc team of space fighters are in an endless loop with wolf and andross. So I'm pretty sure Star fox is retired for another decade if not entirely until they find a solution or other way to reinvent the wheel and fix what wasn't broken. Assault so far is the best story in the entire saga bar none because it had high stakes and took chances, AND it didn't rely on andross.
Starlink had almost everything i wanted in a sequel; customizing ships, freely exploring a galaxy, going to and from planets, switching characters, racing and bounty hunting, its all there. My next guess would be try to go down a mass effect route. Have fox and co. talk with each other in dialogue tree's. the better you build a relationship with your team the less they'll ask for help, the better power ups you get, etc.

Dude, you and I have the same mind set when it comes to Star Fox. I hate how Command completely derailed the series. It was damn near impossible to continue the story with all of those terrible endings. The game treated on of my favourite characters Krystal like crap, and because of Command, we'll probably never get a proper sequel to Assault. Nintendo now wants to keep retelling the 64 story, and because Krystal wasn't created in Japan, it might be unlikely we'll see her again. :/
There was a point during the games before Command I was a hardcore Star Fox fan. I used to make videos, draw pictures, and play games like Adventures and Assault over and over again. All of these years of not getting a real new game has just burnt me out. Star Fox is just another game series to me now, but I'll always have a fondness for the old games and "previous continuity ".
If we actually get a true sequel to Assault, I will lose my freakin' mind. I will actually become a big Star Fox fan again if that happens. At least sell a remake or remastered Assault to get people back into that timeline again before making a new game. This is what fans want, Nintendo. Not another rehash of 64.

He begins taking things too far and Pepper tries to stop him but Shears gets the jump on him and imprisons him along with anybody else that Shears thought would get in his way. Including Bill. Having gotten word of what’s happened, Fay, one of Bill’s squad’s best fighters, escapes and seeks help from Star Fox, consisting of Fox, Falco, Krystal, Miyu, Peppy, Rob, and Slippy. Another thing I noticed just now, that problem Command has of old but well-known bosses just suddenly returning from the dead because, reasons. I've noticed that happening a lot in Nintendo Bosses in general. Not just with Andross, Andrew, and Pigma, but with a lot of Nintendo Bosses such as these.
-Mario: Bowser refusing to stay down after multiple defeats. Although it was questionable whether or not he was killed most times, it was undeniable in New Super Mario Bros where he gets skeletonized in Lava, only to conveniently be brought back by Bowser Jr.
-Kirby: Multiple foes in the series such as Galacta Knight, Dark Meta Knight, Magolor, Marx, etc, after being actually seen blown up or disintegrated or something, they return in a later game completely alive and well, like nothing happened. And they don't even explain why, just "Oh hey I'm back, wassup"?
-Metroid: Ridley after numerous deaths refuses to stay down, returning in various ways such as a cyborg, a Phazon-enhanced cyborg, a clone, an X-Parasite mimic, etc. Also Mother Brain and Kraid as well. Phantoon is questionable since he is a ghostly alien and probably was already dead, but if he does, he also just refuses to stay down.
-Legend of Zelda: Ganon has been clearly killed multiple times and he never stays dead, although the reason for him is understandable since he is an immortal being of darkness.
-Kid Icarus: Medusa also refused to stay down after multiple deaths, although the reason being was explained that Hades, who is the god of the Underworld, kept bringing her back to life.
Nintendo really does not like having dead bosses stay dead, or having completely new villains take their place. And kinda like in Command, at times they just come back, and hardly do anything with them aside from just a fan favorite returning.

Ganon was canonically killed off three times. In the Fallen Hero timeline, at the end of the first Zelda game. Zelda 2's enemies hunt down Link purely because if they sprinkle his blood on Ganon's ashes, he'll be revived. In the Child Timeline he was truly killed at the end of Twilight Princess. The Ganon in Four Swords Adventures is actually a reincarnation of the original one. In the Adult Timeline, he was strongly implied to have died in Wind Waker (turned to stone along with the Master Sword impaled in his head) yeah, no. He's dead forever in that timeline. BoTW, we don't know yet.
Ridley only truly finally died in Super Metroid. In the timeline, any game after Super has a clone of Ridley with the original's memories (how the Space Pirates have his memories I'll never know)
Bowser I only have one possible piece of evidence: Yoshi's Island DS. Remember the whole Star Children thing? (I have some things that I'll write about this tomorrow since I'm hella tired rn) Bowser is one of them. I have a suspiscion that Bowser's Star Child status is what let's him survive almost anything. NSMBDS, the Koopa Troopas have all kinds of black magic, as said in the manual for SMB on the NES. Bowser Jr could've easily found a way to revive his father.

I think the absolute worst thing about the multiple endings is that none of them followed any sort of logical progression from your choices. It's like, "Do you want to fight the Anglars on Katina or Fichina?"
    "Uh...Katina?"
    "Cool. Slippy gets married."
"Wait what? Then what about Fichina?"
    "Krystal becomes a bounty hunter."
    "WHY?!"
It actually made GETTING those endings harder because you had to actively remember the branching paths and couldn't just intuit which direction the story was going at the time you made the choice.
Oddly enough, I like the Kursed ending in theory, but the way it happened was just silly. I always felt Krystal was a blank, understated piece of cardboard who, at the end of Adventures, just had a meltdown and got pissy with Fox for saving her, and making her into a sort of anti-hero would've at least been something for her character beyond just "girlfriend lulz," but the way they led up to it did not make any sense at all, especially since it made Fox a ridiculous chauvinist to get to that point.

I'm pretty much on the same boat as SF Command is such garbage of a game, from it's god awful story with 9 mostly bad endings, gameplay that's been downgraded from Star Fox Assault, and the writing to be so awful and stupid and uniting for the characters, mainly Fox and Krystal. The the hell did you do to them Nintendo? I love those two as a couple and team mates. It's suck that there hasn't been a continuations for SF Assault (my favorite SF game too) and been getting not 1 but 2 HD remaster remake and reimagining. But seeing how Star Fox ending up in StarLink Battle for Atlas, I have to assume either Nintendo is trying to reimagine SF Adventure's story from it's very controversial opinion, which I enjoy the game as it has potential as a Star Fox game but got executed poorly as it feels like Disney's Atlantis the Lost Empire (most underrated Disney film in my opinion).
How could Nintendo work up on that? Well since we know Krystal is an Assist Trophy (and not playable, shame on you Nintendo I want to play as her in Smash), she hasn't been forgotten. Take inspiration from Star Wars Battlefront 2 (the original not the EA version), by having vehicles and on-foot segments, melee and range weapons, multiple characters to be playable like Fox, Krystal, and Slippy (much like the Halo games, namely Halos 3 and 5, probably ODST too) that you can choice (like with Starlink Battle for Atlas), a sense of scale, and changes in the story like not having Krystal not captured for the rest of the game and hints of Andross's return. Though funny enough I did do a pitch idea of a future Star Fox game on my channel 5 years ago and part it makes me feel embarrassed today.
Anyway back on track with Command, the only good thing I can give it is it has a nice soundtrack (wished it was remastered) and the variety of different ships.

I really enjoyed Star Fox Assault when I played it in high school because it was a fun game with a cool, engaging storyline. It tried to move beyond the SF64 storyline, and it made Wolf more than just Fox's rival. Although Wolf was still not a saint in that game, it showed that Wolf was smart enough to recognize that he had to put his dispute with Fox aside to survive the Aparoid invasion. That was great. A new game could've revealed why, for example, Wolf kicked Pigma out of Star Wolf or why he has a grudge against (and respect toward) Fox and his dad.
I couldn't have seen it at the time, but, looking back, SF Assault was basically the swan song for this series. There're so many new directions that they could take this series' gameplay and storytelling, but nope. Ever since that game, Star Fox has been remakes, re-releases, and reboots of games from the 1990s. They have no new ideas left for this series, it seems.

I honestly feel like one of the main issues is that characters in this game aren't treated as characters. They're plot devices.
Krystal hardly acts like Krystal. Fox saved her and the planet she lived on, let her join them on grand adventures in space, and then she leaves them, to join a team of criminals, who have several times tried to kill fox and his friends because Fox "didn't want her to be in harm's way". THAT, is disgusting and seriously disrespectful to Krystal's original character and doesn't make sense whatsoever.
And Wolf's team.... What the heck. They did the rival trope so badly, it hurt my soul. Wolf went from a dangerous and formidable opponent to, "Hey Fox I stole ya girl!.... Let's work together!"
Honestly, you could replace this cast entirely in that game, give it a new name, and no one would even recognize them as Star Fox characters.
And the character designs.... God they're butt ugly. Fox in space, a freaking FAN MADE WEBSERIES has characters that suit Star Fox way better!
I feel like this game is the Shadow the hedgehog of the Star Fox series which is just painful. These are good characters! The world has so much potential for storytelling. But now, Nintendo probably thinks the game failed because it tried to flesh out the characters and lore and not because, this game just had terrible writing.
I hope I'm wrong though. I hope they try again with decent writers who love the series.... And that they bring back those two gals from Star Fox 2. :) They were pretty awesome.

Four years late, but to be honest, Star Fox Command was _supposed_ to be the start of an entirely different franchise, with their own original characters. The Execs felt that it would not sell well, so they basically told the creators to slap the star fox characters and their backstories into the game... Which made it an even BIGGER failure instead.
The reason Command failed was because of how they tacked the personalities of those cancelled characters onto the Star Fox characters. Add in the fact that the Nintendo DS was reaching the end of it's shelf-life, and nobody was going to really going to buy a mediocre game that ruined their beloved characters.

I don't think that going back to the 64 timeline is off the table. Star Fox Zero was described as a "re imagining" that exists alongside 64, which doesn't necessarily mean they're deleting the canon of the GameCube titles. I was under the impression that Zero was just it's own thing.
Besides, Zero flopped. So I wouldn't put money on starting a new storyline off of that anyways. They could still retcon Command and pick up where Assault left off.

The fucking massive age difference doesn't help either, Krystal was said to be 16 in Adventures & has a one year timeskip to Assault which should've made her 17 but she was mysteriously aged up more which makes no sense canon wise, while Panther evaded capture by the Cornerian military for decades which would put him closer to his late thirties.
The age gap between Krystal, Panther & even Fox is ick & this is coming from someone who was downvoted on Reddit by the WolFox community for the 9 year age gap was disgusting (another user somehow pointed out that Wolf is of Peppy's Generation which would make it even nastier considering Wolf says in Zero that he hadn't had this much fun since he fought Fox's father.)
Now I am going to vomit thinking about it.

We went from a creepy floating head(Andross) & scary Cybermen/Borg-like bug robots(Aparoids) to generic, boring, forgettable fish people(the Anglars). Wow, they can't even come up with a creative villain anymore, hence why they keep going back to using Andross.

Literally they could have had them be this this faction that formed on Aquas after the Lylat wars and Aparoid invasion. They form do to a lack of confidence in the Cornerian army as well as hiding the fact that they knew about the aparoids for years and done nothing. This could have Slippy and Amanda have conflicting emotions on the matter as Aquas is his home. Literally that is enough to make them more interesting

There's this fangame called Star Fox: Event Horizon that uses the Freespace 2 engine. It reimagines all the known Star Fox games so far in gameplay and story, so the Command's story might be overhauled. It even has the original voice actors of Krystal and Wolf onto the project.

0:30 - You never insulted me, I agree with you, I hate the story myself, and this game doesn't deserve to be called canon. I mean look at the mess it made in the fandom. Plus it just feels more like some cheap fanfiction because of the developers careless handling of the characters. Top thing I hated about the game above all was Fox and Krystal getting separated, and Krystal childishly joining Star Wolf just to get back at Fox all because he cared for her safety. Two wrongs never make a right, and what Krystal did does not sound like her at all. Plus I hate her supposed fanboys who see her as their girlfriend(and bash Fox because to them he gets in the way of their crushes for her) for making it worse than it already is.
I'm glad I was incapable of owning a DS at the time, because if I did buy it before looking up about the plot I would have been crushed. And it was sad enough when I read more elements about it over time and put all the pieces of the puzzle together throughout the fandom. Almost felt tempted to buy it for cheap on the Wii U virtual console, but decided it wasn't worth the money.

Bison was maybe supposed to die to Akuma in SF2 but it is explained in the later games (such as the Alpha trilogy) that he can come back thanks to his Pyscho Power as long as his very soul doesn't get destroyed, which didn't happen in the SF2 tournament because Akuma wasn't able to. Ryu *MAYBE* did kill him for good in SF5 thanks to the Power of Nothingness, that's not 100% sure but it is kinda implied especially when you know that he doesn't appear nor even get mentionned in SF3 (which takes place after SF5).
When Bison comes back, it makes sense. But Andrew and Pigma got brought back for absolutely no reason and that is another spitting in the face of Assault.

    • @galten7361
      @galten7361 Před 10 měsíci

Bison was already confirmed to be alive and ruling Shadoloo in SF3 just that he's in hiding. And Andrew was never confirmed to die since once the Anglars are in the plot the conflict with the Venom remnants is just dropped and Pigma is just a floating cube monster.

I will admit the ending of Krystal becoming Kursed is bad, but I would like to see Kursed return not in the way the ending portrayed her, but rather like she got possessed or is mind controlled. I mean look at Shadow Queen Peach and Puppet Zelda, even possessed Amy, granted she's only in the cartoon, but people still like the concept it is a very interesting one where one of your friends and/or love is turned evil due to actions beyond their control and I think Kursed really fits that.

I hated that it wasn't a traditional star fox game at first, but after getting over that, I learned to like the map navigation and short mission gameplay. The stories were crazy stupid though. Its like they just got brand new star fox (BAD) fanfic writers in the office and gave the plot control to them.

Great essay here. StarFox Command is basically the Sonic 06 and Shadow The Hedgehog of the franchise. It tries way too hard to be dark and edgy and plays like a really stupid soap opera.
On another note, can kind of see Andrew surviving Assault as we only see his ship taken down. I can accept him surviving, but not what this game's use of him.
