  • One of a leader’s greatest challenges is helping his or her workers to grow into maximum effectiveness. In this interview with Skip Prichard, Cal Turner, Jr., former Dollar General CEO, relates his management philosophy of trusting the instincts of each employee.
“A leader tries to inspire others to figure out what’s the highest and best they can go for, and that gives greater success than the leader himself or herself would define,” Cal says. Done this way, there is a higher degree of performance and accountability when a person sets his or her own high bar.
Under Cal’s leadership, Dollar General grew from 500 to 14,000 stores and annual sales of more than $6 billion annually. His book, “My Father’s Business”, outlines that success.

Please don't pat yourself too firmly on your back if you are NOT paying people a living wage. Shame on you.
